Move action: retrieve rope. Standard action, tie it off.

Ian stabs the beast and distracts it while while slashes it repeatedly until it drops to the ground dead. Dadna manages to climb to the top of the pile. She sees a tiefling off to her left and the last beast fighting Anton. Leothar is unable to get up the rubble, his increased weight causing the rubble to tumble down as he tries to step forward. Ardriel can see a figure to his left and what he guesses is the last beast fighting someone.

Anton swings at the beast again and his second swing drops it to the ground.

"Oh...come on!" Dadna exclaimed as she once again failed to make any traction. It was readily apparent that climbing was not her forte.

From Ian's vantage point can he see anything?

Hearing the sound of combat, Ian determines that he needs to find lighter armor or grow wings. Stepping back, he looks at the crumpled bridge trying to plot the best course to climb. Clarity striking him, he draws out the cloud walking scale using its magic. As he begins to rise, he attempts to keep himself near the rubble, so he has a place to land at the top.

"The tiefling might be out of Fireballs for now, but I don't know where they went."

He smashes a piece of bridge rubble out of frustration.
"I couldn't stop them from escaping again with that wand. Have to make a point of grabbing it if we catch them again."

What time is it?
If the Tiefling is a sorcerer, they will need to rest to prepare spells again.

And if a cleric, the recent casting limit will count against their daily spells even if they don't need rest and just prepare spells at midnight or whatever.

So that gives us a window before they can Fireball us again.

"We could try to move our army across the gap in the next few hours, or we could try to hunt down the tiefling while they are low on spells."

”The bridge is broken. Fley is unconscious. We have an invisible foe who might well be listening to us and our plans. Let us fall back, heal our wounds, and figure out the best course of action.” Dadna said as she picked up her gnomish friend.

Watching the chief smash the rubble in frustration, Ian certainly understood. The battle had not gone as planned, the bridge was destroyed, an enemy survived to report of their attempt and Fley was seriously wounded. He didn't know if it was better to continue to press onwards or to regroup. Not sure who to agree with he looked towards where Ardriel waited ready with his bow. "Ardriel, What do you think?"

As he waited for their elder member to share an opinion, he began to release the levitation so he could aid Dadna in getting up the cliffside.

"He didn't go invisible. He teleported. Only way he could have gotten that far away that fast.
Let's heal Fley right here and now, whatever we decide to do next."

Leothar looks at the pile of rubble with some trepidation. He really does not want to try climbing it again.

Arriving back in camp, Dadna felt defeated. Anton had died, the bridge had been destroyed, and it would take a few days to build a ramp. It was proof that in war there would be casualties and that no plan went perfectly. She wanted to have a funeral for the brave Paladin, but the army required their attention. Such formalities would have to wait, all that she could do at the moment was pray for his soul.

To her companions, she said ”That was a disaster. We are fortunate that it did not go even worse. It shows me that we need a way to deal with invisible foes. Does anyone have any ideas?”

Leothar shrugs.
"It didn't go well, but they had a defensive position and were prepared to take out the bridge. We are not a very stealthy group. At least we all came back in one piece."

If pressed on it, he is legitimately completely unaware that this 'Anton' person had ever existed.
I f'n hate being ghosted. And we know nothing bad has happened to the player - they are still posting in other games.

"But our foe did not turn invisible. He teleported.
He and I were both on the rubble of the bridge.
I had him dead to rights. He pulled out a wand, and then just a few seconds later he blasted us with another Fireball from beyond the range of my Darkvision!
If he were moving invisibly down the rubble, he wouldn't have been able to get that far that fast.
Yes, I saw him vanish and so I thought he had gone invisible.
But when he suddenly hit us from so far away just a few seconds later, I realized I was wrong."

"If I had grabbed him... no, he still could have escaped with a wand of teleportation. Our best chance would have been for everyone to hit him hard at once, but the rubble hindered our movement.
I can't sprout wings, sad to say.
Let us all prepare spells to resist fire in the future."

"Granted, other foes might go invisible, and it is good to be able to deal with that."
My suggestion would be someone who can cast Faerie Fire such as a Sacred Servant with the Light subdomain, or Legendary Item spellcasting for Faerie Fire, See Invisibility, and/or Invisibility Purge.

"As to our next steps, even without the bridge, we should be able to move our army across without taking days to build ramps.
We have two scales of Terendelev that possess the power of levitation. Our army is but 100 souls, is it not?
We'll get across to establish a beachhead and then bring the army along."

Each scale can cast Levitate 3/day, with a duration of 19 minutes for each use and a limit of 1900 lbs. Say that is a 200-lb lift (strong wooden platform with railings along the sides) and maybe eight soldiers at a time. Levitate moves 20' per round. If the bridge had been 40' above the riverbed, that is four rounds to move the lift up 40' and down 40'. Add a round for each group to embark and disembark. That is six rounds to move eight soldiers. The whole army in 72 rounds (7.2 minutes). Even if the bridge was somewhat higher, that is still well within our capabilities.

The Scales are a game-changer. If our army were 5,000 strong, then building ramps might make sense, but in this case I don't see why that would be the assumption. 100 people is not that many to move with the Scales.

Shocked from the developments at the bridge, Ian walks along listening to the two wise dwarves speak. As the chief explains how the combat turned on the creature's ability to teleport, Ian chuckles to himself, wishing he could sprout wings. Shaking his head, "Resist fire, see invisible creatures, find enemies that have teleported; My strongest asset is light and it barely penetrates some of the darkness we've found."

Breathing a sigh, "But your right we must continue. I think using the scales is a good idea. Whether we use platforms as elevators going down into the ravine and then up or as floating Ferrys, I think either would work." He points towards the paladin cavalry. "We will need to figure in the weight of the horses." He looks back towards the fallen bridge. "And once were across the ravine they will not be able to retreat."

What time of day is it?
Looking at the troops, he turns and asks Leothar, "Chief, should we have them start building the platforms tonight, or wait until the morning?"

weren't there towers of some sort that may impeed our attack? Were they something we wanted to deal with before we sent the troops over?

"Ah. The horses. Right.
Well, I guess building ramps it is, then."

A heavy horse is between 1,000 and 1,500 lbs by itself, not even counting the platform or barding and tack. I don't think Levitate is going to work after all.

Leothar looks despondent. "I guess we make camp and start in the morning."

With the collapse of the bridge and the defenders driven off or dead, the heroes move back to camp to lick their wounds. When their advisors hear of the developments they begin the plan to build ramps using the rubble for the armies to move over.

Anvenn and Aron move over the riverbed and begin scouting early the next morning while the armies begin the rebuilding effort. Around noon the scouts return to report. Aron says "The curtain walls of the citadel contain 3 armies; dretches, tieflings and cultists. The curtain walls still have some of their defenses on them and moving the armies inside will be more dangerous. Anvenn has more details on that." Anvenn then steps up and says "The citadel was built with 7 towers in the curtain walls containing 1 catapult each. Each is 40 feet high. Luckily only 4 are left and they have some presence on top. Each will need to be destroyed before the armies move to engage the enemy forces inside the curtain wall."

”We can do this…” Dadna said, thoughtfully. ”Are any of the towers accessible with cover enough to get close? If so we should start with that one. The question really is whether we can take them before the alarms are raised on the others.” She knew that when the fortress was made the answer would have been a hard no, but with demons occupying it? There was the chance that they would be lacking enough to let such a situation persist.
