On the original series, Scotty was often in charge of security, but that might have been more about the color of his shirt :).
That being said, if we don't have a dedicated communications officer, that can easily be something that others spread into. Navigation feels like it splits their discipline a bit. But it seems that a lot of characters in TOS through the movies were jack of all trades to some degree- somethng that works really well with this game.
More than a lot of other games, Star Trek Adventures is great at being rewarding when you take on different skillsets instead of min-maxxing to be the best at one thing. It's much more character focused, so it's far more fun to build your character as a well rounded person and go from there.
If that makes sense.

I don't intend to cut any of you at this time. There is room for all of you in a campaign.
Captain- possibly andorian (Commanding officer)- Insnare
Chief Engineer (Internal Systems)- Johnnyblack
Chief Medical Officer (Sickbay)- WhtKnt
Chief Science Officer (Sensor Operations) - Trscroggs
So that leaves these for us- and a lot of it can be put together (Chekov was Navigator, Tactical, and Security, though maybe not all at once)
Helm
Navigator
Security Oversight
Tactical
Communications
You probably want to keep Engineer separate, since they will often be physically separate.
Science Officer could easily pick up Navigator.
Security Oversight, Tactical, and Communications can all be one officer.
Or Navigator and Tactical could be combined, as they are in TOS.

Looks good to me WhtKnt. I will note that in my past experience, the Medical Officer often felt the most disconnected from what was going on. In order to combat that, I would recommend creating a supporting character that excites you or playing your doctor as someone who really likes to get involved (like McCoy).

Oh, K'Rist likes to get her paws dirty. She was second in her security classes at Starfleet Academy. She grew up a Starfleet brat and helped cure a plague on Fermault VI when she was just an Ensign. And, unfortunately, she lost her best friend and fellow officer during a mission gone terribly wrong. It's not something that she discusses openly, but her records indicate that there was a hostage situation and K'Rist and her friend tried to overcome the captors, succeeding at the cost of her friend's life. Though no blame was slated in the official record (and in fact, K'Rist and her friend (posthumously) received the Karagite Order of Heroism), K'Rist blames herself and is determined that something like this never happens again.
K'Rist is generally an even-tempered individual who takes her Hippocratic Oath very seriously. She is a skilled performer and often sings softly while she works. Though a gentle soul, she can be moved to violence when her patients or innocents are threatened.

Here's my helmsman/XO
Cooper "Coop" Barstow
He should be a lot of fun :)
Nice character sheet! Where did you got it?

I found it when I was building my last home game. The crew was considering going either TOS or MOV era- they ended up TNG era anyway because someone wanted to plat a soong type android.
I like them because they give you room to expand on the background elemnts and put in what your talents do.
The zip file has ship and npc sheets too
here's the link: Star Trek Adventures TOS-era Character Sheet Collection 3.0

Totally cool either way. I've run this game for about a year so I can be flexible.
Regardless, here's what the crew seems to look like (unless GM is picking players to form their playgroup like normal for this board)
Let me know if I missed something

Trscroggs, maybe you would take Sensor Operations and Navigation in your Science Officer? Those Tasks won't overlap too often.
Jokkem, would you be willing to take on Security/Tactical/Communications? That would pretty much be the Tactical station on TNG and Voyager.

Things got a little bit busy here. I was supposed to be off this week but work called with a "please, please, please finish this project early."
I'm assuming you mean by 'take' you mean add them to my main rather than building a supporting character?
I'm assuming that a science officer could use a lot of Reason, but what does a Navigator want?

Here's a support character. An andorian redshirt named Senior Chief Petty Officer Thar Ch'chevet

Looks like we are doing well with characters. Everything so far looks good. It is hard to check your math, so I'm going to trust that everything is kosher.
Once we get to creating profiles, I would just ask that everyone put the rules text for their talents in their character sheets, either in their profile or in a link. Since there is not an online SRD, looking up rules is already pretty unwieldy. Having rules specific to your characters handy will make things easier. I also like to tailor things to fit the characters you want to play, so it is helpful to be able to understand them quickly.
Now we need to pick a ship. If indeed we choose an Excelsior, I think it would almost have to have a mission profile of Technical Testbed. 2285 is the launch date for the Excelsior class, and the Excelsior itself is still testing transwarp drive, which is a complete disaster. I'm open to other points of view, those are just my initial thoughts.
The Excelsior class is a big damn ship, Scale 5. Ships get a number of Talents equal to their Scale. Excelsior gets Improved Impulse Drive and Secondary Reactors. Technical Testbed gives one of:
Advanced Shields
Backup EPS Conduits
High Resolution Sensors
Improved Power Systems
Improved Warp Drive
Then you would have two more.
What is shaping up here storywise is an experimental crew on an experimental ship. That seems to offer lots of opportunity for storytelling.

No, you are good. I'm not in a rush. But I wouldn't try to read the whole book. It is a good system, but a mess of organization. Focus on character creation. Since many of us are learning the system, I'll happily let you make tweaks in your build as necessary if something isn't working.. We can work on getting started on Monday if that works best for people.

I ran my group through the demo adventure in the core book, A Star Beyond the Stars, the 2 encounters in Modiphius’ magazine, and all the TNG era content for the living campaign (from Decision Point to Assessor’s Gambit - we’re supposed to finish Displaced after we can get together again).
I haven’t touched any of the adventures in the hardbacks, the published pdfs that aren’t from the living campaign, or any of the TOS era living campaign adventures
