Round 7 - Oh how time passes. Panache 4/5

Kamari tries to dash into to set up the flank for others, but trips on something--maybe Kort's tools.

Full speed through the construct to set up canny tumble. No penalties with Swashbuckler's Grace, but will it be enough bonuses? Euan says it wasn't.
acrobatics + heroism + panache + reroll on first '5': 1d20 + 24 + 2 + 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 24 + 2 + (5) + (1) = 33

She gets stopped in front of the construct and tries to stab it to redeem herself.

Acrobatics to Avoid AoOs: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (4) + 16 = 20

The Night Swan does her best to try to avoid the construct’s attacks as she squeezes past Kamari and into the room, but she hesitates too much in going for the opening and will likely be punished for it.

Roll20 Map - Tracking Sheet

Major Kort opens the door and steps away. Edelmira moves in drawing the AoO but hitting herself though there is DR (10) and as expected immune to demoralization. Muri lands but a single blow through the cover of the wall and door, but he does full damage. Kamari also draws an AoO but is not attacked as she manages to plant a hit (DR). Elen can’t feint it, and so just misses though she aids the party and provides flank.

With great skill and speed, the claws clack at Edelmira and Kamari leaving deep wounds.

The guardian then expels a cloud of smoke and cinders, filling the small chamber for 1d6 ⇒ 1 round(s). Everyone except Muri and Major Kort take fire damage: 6d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 3, 2, 2, 3) = 15 (reflex DC 20 for half) and you have a 20% miss chance unless you can see through the smoke and fire. Elen’s blind sense pierces the veil enough to tell you where the golem is, but she still has the miss chance.

Muri and Major Kort have a 50% miss chance due to the incendiary cloud but are far enough away that they take no damage.

For your next round, remember the +5 att/dam on your attacks.

Edelmira, even with flank, can’t quite land a blow. Muri plunks three very expensive arrows into the woodwork as he continues to have bad luck with the bow. Kamari however, in flank with everyone, manages a crit which causes the golem to teeter so, and then she follows up with a backhand, and something deep inside the monstrosity goes ping.

The golem, bereft of any structural soundness after the drubbing, can no longer contain the fiery magics that held it together and it explodes in a ball of plasma-y fire! Edelmira, Elen, and Kamari are all caught directly by the blast. Major Kort is also in the radius, but has a +2 to the save for cover.

The party collects the chests, heavy bastards, and the iron box, partly melted from the blast but still intact.

You escape the way you came in, by quaffing potions of gaseous form and floating lightly over the walls. Watching from the darkened arrow slit, you wait for the guards to pass on the wall below and then make your move.

Once past the wall, as the potions begin to fail, you utilize the spider climb still ongoing to climb into the water without making so much as a splash. You float/swim the short distance to the sewer portal, though you needn’t climb in and get all yucky. You can cast the teleportation from here…

Would the caster of the scroll please roll on the teleportation table (link). I presume you teleport to your carriage - something you know rather well and know is in a shed awaiting your return a couple hundred miles away. You are very familiar with your carriage, having spent many days in travel within its friendly confines. However, as the conveyance itself might have moved from where you last saw it over a week ago, I’m treating it as studied carefully for the table.

Do you make it?

In an instant, you find yourselves crammed into your coach, dripping wet from the river and a little shaky from the adrenaline. After a moments silence though, you feel a wave of relief! You’re clean out of Zimar, and you have the Princesses main rival stuffed in a bag of holding. You have done a days work today and that’s for sure!

It’s a little tricky getting out without breaking anything, as your carriage is in a locked shed for its protection. Major Kort manages the lock though and you step out into the night. You’re in a small port town on the edge of the mighty Porthmos river which leads down to Oppara itself. A river barge is a great way to lie low for a few days as you make your way back to civilization - though you might want to give a report before then.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, what do you do first? You expect that Myrma and Virgil are in the nearby hotel awaiting your planned return in a week or two. It’s currently very late at night on Arodus 30, an Oathday.

After a decent meal, The Socratic Major Kort will sort through the loots and items the party liberated, as well as any fun gear upon our main foe.

Female Half-Elf aka Katherine Weaver

In an abundance of caution, Kamari proposes that she or another uses their broach of disguise to make contact with Myrma and Virgil and ensure they are not being surveilled. Perhaps the party takes lodgings in a different place until a barge is ready for departure.

Once those precautions are taken, Kamari happily indulges in some wine and cheese and bread and sweets before joining the others in looking through their amassed items for potential intelligence.

If possible, Kamari will buy another CLW wand before they leave town.

Female Jininese Elf Lvl 14

”Nicely done, Major Kort!” Elen exclaims when suddenly crammed in the carriage with everyone.

~~
Nods to Kamari’s suggestion. ”I can go if no one else would like to go. Maybe someone better at disguise than me? Maybe someone who would like to stretch their legs before getting on a barge?”

Assuming we haven’t already…
”While we’re looting him, and since it will take at least four days to our destination – we should cast Gentle Repose on old Max, here.”

Elen will help sort the treasure.

Muri has no interest in food, only relenting when Underfoot keeps following the others and their desire to see their bellies sated. Given their custodial care of the High Strategos, the halfling only nibbles at the noshes, anxious to see the body delivered, and the intelligence shared. He feels mildly paranoid that Maxillar might suddenly awaken and begin screaming for his release, or that his body is enough to be scryed from afar, and their collective location be determined before they're able to complete their mission.

"Jeevet?" Muri looks expectantly at the carrier of the creepy head.

Female Jininese Elf Lvl 14

"OH, I forgot to mention -- I can update Kathann, or someone, in more detail in a dream, but we can also use Jeevet for the quick stuff."

She produces the creepy head and shoves it into Muri's hands.

"Yes, please. If you would handle that while I sort through this, that would be good. While I doubt we are being pursued, it might be nice to move quickly in case they have a way to track the body. I suggest we keep the body in the portable space both to reduce odors, but also to avoid any unwelcome scrying attempts," The Socratic Major Kort offers.

After divesting the body of things of interest, Kort will examine them and also return them to the dimensional holding area.

Roll20 Map - Tracking Sheet

The party, perhaps Elen or Edelmira first, checks out the inn in a random disguise, giving it the once over and returning with information.

The inn is a simple one, though large for the town. Not too surprising as the town really only exists as a northern port on the river leading to Oppara and a reasonable jumping off spot for Zimar far to the south. The town isn’t much, certainly no magics can be bought here - save a potion or two (though you also have several in the party that no one has claimed). For healing wands you’ll have to wait for Oppara.

You find Myrma and Virgil readily enough, enjoying a late night drink just before turning in (remember it’s very late). Myrma is chatting with a caravan guard from another group, while Virgil remains his mute self looking on, though with a relaxed smile. They don’t seem on alert in any particular way - just casually biding time while their lords and ladies are off.

You stayed here on your way to Zimar, in your disguises, so it should be safe to do so again as if you’re returning from your romp in the countryside.

Do you check in and, after you secure your rooms, loot the dead? Or take some other precaution first?

"In that case, should we check into the hotel before we check the swag? Or should we pretend to be hunters or something else here? I know it's 10pm, but I'm a little uncomfortable just pulling all that loot out in the street."

She uses the pin and her sleeves to change into hunter garb.

Edelmira looks at the bag of holding and shakes her head. ”They will be using all the magic in their disposal to find the bodies and the items upon them. We should be patient until we can do so in a place protected from observance. I am certain the Princess can provide such a place. If she does not, then at least we will be surrounded by guards.”

Apparently overruled in what he wanted to do, Kort waits to see what others do next. After all, he knows that in order for the scrying to work, they would have to have the spell active at the same time as the items are present, and such spells do not last long and take active concentration. The chances of overlap are slim.

Female Half-Elf aka Katherine Weaver

Kamari sips her wine and nibbles on her sweets and stays out of the conversation as she would bring no real knowledge to it.

Nobody is overruling anyone! Just offering a suggestion

Edelmira spies the Major’s displeasure and throws up a hand. ”If we are going to look through what we have now, I would at least suggest we do so prepared for a battle, in case our enemies are alerted and decide to give chase with magicks of their own.”

I think we’re a little hung up and folks are adrift. So I'll move us forward a bit.

The party takes some reasonable precautions and gets a few rooms around a central suite using new disguises (‘cause why not). You make quiet contact with Myrma so she can prepare to move out in the morning on the barge.

You take a chance, quickly, to strip Maxillar, but likely leave his signet ring with the body and stuff it back in the sack, after a gentle repose (I think you guys got an oil or scroll with the other stuff).

Maxillar was well tooled as they say. On his body you find…
Potion Cure Serious Wounds
Potion of Feather Fall
Ovetrian’s Full Plate Armor, +3 rallying
Heavy Steel Shield +3
Lance +2
Battle Axe +2
Amulet of Natural Armor +2
Belt of Physical Might +2 (Str,Dex)
Cloak of Resistance +4
Headband of Inspired Wisdom +2
Ring of Protection +2
Ring of Sustenance
Keys to keep, including the vault and the iron case
Key to the now destroyed golem
Signet ring (which I assume you leave on the body)

The wooden chests were filled with coins of the realm- lucre to be spent on Maxillar’s armies and agents no doubt.

The lockbox is next.

The small, iron case, lightly damaged and cleverly locked, can be opened via a key in Maxillar’s possession or with the Major’s deft fingers. It contains many parchments with various legal documents, letters, and historical records containing perhaps the most dangerous weapon in Maxillar’s arsenal.

Apparently, one of Maxillar Pythareus’s personal duties has been the suppression of unsavory rumors regarding Stavian III and the imperial family. For a time, his work involved quieting talk about Stavian III’s various dalliances and outbursts. The evidence from this era is unfortunate, but not terribly damaging.

The most distressing details of the Stavian line, however, came to light only 7 years ago, when a team of adventurers located and plundered the Adella Necropolis. The burial complex, concealed in the Headwater Gap of the World’s Edge Mountains, held the worldly remains and records of the now‐extinct Adella noble family, who dominated Taldan politics for centuries until their internal squabbles lead to a bitter civil war and violence.

The bloodshed they engendered and their wanton indulgence alienated even their fellow Taldan nobles. Rumors persist to this day of corruption, graft, murder, and even devil worship. In Taldor! Grand Prince Beldam II declared the family be stricken of their noble titles and erased from the nation’s history, and by the dawn of the 46th century, those few Adellas who had not killed each other off were hunted down by rival nobles and put to the sword in a series of bloody duels.

Except one.

Lucretia Adella gave birth to the last Adella in 4497AR - the illegitimate son of nobleman and soon‐to‐be Grand Prince Micheaux I. Micheaux I reluctantly adopted the boy in secret and named him Stavian I, and in the process initiated the modern Stavian line, including former Grand Prince Stavian III… and Princess Eutropia.

The taint of Adella blood remains strong in the public zeitgeist however. With most official records of them gone, the Adellas have become urban legends and cautionary tales, despised and not understood.

You see evidence that Maxillar Pythareus dispatched assassins to eliminate the adventurers as soon as he caught rumor of their discovery, but the very fact that rumors reached his ear meant some of the information they uncovered had been disseminated. For years since, the High Strategos has dispatched only his most trusted personal aides to execute anyone carrying documents these adventurers uncovered - all while serving the Grand Prince Stavian III.

While this revelation doesn’t prove Princess Eutropia unfit to rule by default, it throws enormous suspicion and scandal on a family already under massive scrutiny. The release of this information could do real damage to the Princess and open the field up to every petty lord with a distant claim to the throne.

Linguistics (trained only) check please, for anyone who’s going over the incendiary documents.

It’s now well past 2am. Elen can dream to someone and give a report (let me know who and how much you tell them). Muri can use Jeeves to report to someone else, but with only 25 words it’ll be more limited so at least give me a sense of what you’re trying to convey.

Edelmira takes a look at the documents, though she is a relative novice at such things. ”The line was broken, it seems.” She is not particularly visibly upset by this revelation. In her mind, “legitimacy” is always a work of prestidigitation, and all it would take is a glance behind the curtain to see what actual mechanisms are at work. They are just finally taking a peek. What matters more to her is what this means going forward.

Linguistics: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17

Her interest then falls upon the armor. Truly, a magnificent piece, a masterwork for the ages. She almost feels bad about what she is going to do to it. Almost.

”I think it is safe to say nobody else would be interested in laying claim to this, yes?”

Roll20 Map - Tracking Sheet

I should be clearer, as Edelmira doesn’t seem worried enough. :)

Yes, there is a break in the line of succession, but as she says - no big deal. Happens all the time - though it has been a while.

The additional difficulty here is that the Princess’ descendants were horrible people, and in a place as historically minded as Taldor it will matter. If this became public, people would question Her right to lead, and it would certainly open up the throne to others with weaker claims hereditarily speaking, but families with fewer skeletons in their closets.

It would be severely damaging.

”Wow, that’s a lot of stuff,” Kort remarks as the loot is tallied by the tallyman. ”Now, let me see to that iron box….”

Kort slumps back in his chair, thinking about what Edelmira noted. He wonders if it means what he thinks it means.

You’re saying that the Princess is effectively a member of the Trump family, down the line?

Female Half-Elf aka Katherine Weaver

Kamari takes in the implications of the materials.

"Well, these never need to see the light of day."

In her head the only question is whether to destroy all the evidence now or wait. She figures it's better for the Princess to know the truth though, and she would likely want to see the materials herself.

”Let us not be hasty. We have options. We should bring it to Martella and the Princess’s attention, as I think it would be dangerous to presume this situation contained. It was in the Imperialist’s interest to keep the story hidden while Maxillar was a serious contender for the succession as it would sully his own claim, as it depending on the late Stavian’s blessing. But now that Max is out of play, there is little reason not to. Let us not forget that we have every reason to believe this Immaculate Circle has been manipulating the late Maxillar, so anything he knew, they likely knew. In fact, they may have been the ones to tell him.”

She nods to herself as she considers the options.

”With all that in-mind, when a bad story is about break, often the best option is to get ahead of it and mold the narrative. She could go public with it first, already having a plan to deal with it. Paint the Princess as a paragon of integrity who wishes to rectify the mistakes of the past. Alternatively, cast aspersions on the whole thing and portray it as the plot of resentful upstarts. But whatever the play, it will need to be decided by the Princess.”

Female Jininese Elf Lvl 14

If I am getting all this correctly -- Elen will update Lotheed with the details omitting the bit about Stavian III and Eutropia both (evidently) being illegitimate heirs to the throne in addition to being descendants of a family notorious for devil worship etc.. She will however add there there is a small detail which should better better be discussed face to face.

"So, unless someone objects -- here is what I will tell Martella."

Drumpf?

Roll20 Map - Tracking Sheet

Major Kort notices that all the files in the carefully organized box are copies. So either Maxillar destroyed the originals, but kept copies to protect himself against the sometimes volatile Grand Prince Stavian III, or the originals are still out there somewhere.

The party turns in for the night, to rest in anticipation of an early start tomorrow. Elen stays up a little longer to send a lengthy message to Martella Lotheed, outlining the state of Maxillar and how the group managed the attack. Muri, GMPC, will notify Kathann with Jeeves - so she can finish preparations for your arrival in a few days.

In the morning (Arodus 31 a Fireday) you rise early, and leave with the fog and a light drizzle on a river barge headed south to Oppara. Your disguises hold, and no one seems to be the wiser as you wend your way down the river with a few other fine folk traveling on the same boat.

No alarm is raised on the journey, and I expect there are a few back and forth discussions with Martella Lotheed and Kathann Zalar via sending and dreams as you flesh out your initial reports - and perhaps place orders for magics that can be made for you in Oppara. They are both extremely pleased with your work! (Time to check the treasure sheet for anything you might want to keep.)

Kathann will meet you in Oppara to take possession of Maxillar. Their plan is to quickly raise him and begin to put him on trial for his crimes - though such a trial might take some time to prepare of course. No matter what, they hope to keep him out of commission and in prison for a while, maybe even exile him from Taldor if the trial goes their way - and with your collected evidence they are hopeful.

As you get closer to Oppara, the coastal plums are fruiting - so tasty! More boats join you in the wide river as you drift to the great city. Is there anything specific you want to do over the four day journey? Other than eat fresh plums of course.

I have something to add, but I’ll do it in a second post.

Roll20 Map - Tracking Sheet

I have a note that you started this, but can’t find when. So I’ll say this is done today. You get a Sending from Dilys Llewellyn, your high priest at the Cathedral of Stachys, over supper one evening as you travel with confirmation of the following information.

The Advanced Market is completed! A large general store is established and funded - bringing new products and even some luxuries into the community. Stachys even begins to draw aristocrats to the nearby manors and hunting lodges. A few are coming up from as far as Oppara as in times of old, and more from Cassomir. Stachys becomes a hub of growth for the community - and gains the prosperous settlement quality (Economy +1; increase base value by 30%; increase purchase limit by 50%).

On a personal level this event, and the ongoing population explosion, continue to increase your taxes and rents. You are now raking in 190gp per month from the growing community of Stachys, from renting out a portion of your fields to local sharecroppers, and from your own renewed winery, soon to put out its first case (which of course should go to Baroness Voinum for her financial and moral support in getting the winery re-opened). As a reminder, your luxurious living at the Betony Estate, Myrma and Virgil, the carriage maintenance, servants, etc. all add up to around 50-60gp a month.

Edelmira spends her free time doing her usual diligent activities such as exercising and reading, but she focuses mainly on the project of “adjusting” Overtrian’s plate armor to suit her aesthetic and practical needs. Without a forge, and trying to keep to the group’s cover, she satisfies herself for the tome being with light tinkering, sketching, and planning.

She needs to spend a day and 1100 gp to modify the armor, but probably won’t be able to until we are Betony since a boat isn’t exactly ideal for metalworking
