I'm assuming Xindyra had been able to study the ghoul guardian again, for studied combat.

Rapier vs ugly, cat's grace, heroism, studied combat, inspired: 1d20 + 18 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 18 + 1 = 34Dmg, cat's grace, studied target, inspired: 1d6 + 6 + 2 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 6 + 2 + 3 + 1 = 18

Xindyra unleashes studied strike for 2d6 ⇒ (4, 5) = 9 precision damage, and swift action studies him again.

She steps 5ft back into cover.

Edwin froze uncertain of what to do.

Yukarii's super heated rays stab out, narrowly missing the slavering ghoul. Zendara meanwhile lofted a trio of arrows, the first two looked like they were going to miss but the wind changed and they slammed into the undead, lodging deep into it's chest! Her final arrow went wide.

Xindrya had plenty of time to study the ghoul, and the moment the barrier fell she lunged. Her weapon struck true, transfixing the ghoul's chest and poking out the other side.

Despite being badly damaged, the ghoul was still dangerous and heedless of the damage it tore into Xindrya despite her armour and sorcerous protection. It bit down on her neck and one of it's filthy claws raked her flesh. Her body managed to fight off the first dose of paralytic poison but the second was too much and to her horror her muscles locked up rigid which was excruciating but she couldn't breathe let alone scream!

Yukarii watched in horror as the ghoul tore into Xindrya and realized that something was wrong as Xindrya quit fighting against the thing. That Xindrya was not limp like she was dead was a good thing, but they did not have much time. Knowing that assured damage was the best option just then, and not wanting to hit Xindrya, Yukarii called out a flurry of unerring magical bolts to slam into the undead thing!

Thank you Xindrya.

Edwin's blade thrums with power as he makes an expert thrust, slicing deeply into the Ghoul!

Xindrya was saved thanks to her blur, but she felt the Ghoul's claws pass within in an inch of her skin! She then carefully attacked, landing several good hits. Zendara lofted several arrows which slammed into the Ghoul's neck and finally Yukarii's magic missile was the straw that broke the camel's back.

The ghoul's body suddenly exploded in a malestrom of negative energy, which looked like a wave of blackness resolving into a host of tiny phantasmal mouths that bit poor Xindrya and Edwin horribly as it washed over them!

Then she goes to the standing stones and starts casting Mending on them, trying to mend each nick and scratch separately since she knows there is no spell able to cast on the large stones as a whole... hoping there was enough magic and power left at the site that her small efforts would make a difference.

Up close to the menhirs Zendara finds profane and obscene words and symbols have been chiseled deeply into them and into the cracks a mix of blood and filth has been inlaid.

Kn: Religion DC 20:
The symbols and slogans are related to the cult of Nyarlathotep and several other cosmic horrors known as the Great Old Ones.

Undoing this was a task to which the humble mending cantrip seemed inadequate but with persistence she managed to clean away some of the filth around what she took to be a despoiled symbol of Elodin. With patience she found a tiny flake of stone the size of her pinky fingernail that seemed to match up with the damaged symbol and to her surprise her mending cantrip was enough to affix it. Doing this felt right somehow but her ministrations where interrupted by heavy rain.

Perception DC 18:
It happened so slowly you didn't notice at first but the rain washed away more of the grime and the area around the mended stone looked noticeably different, it was as if the stone had started to heal.

Kn: Arcarna DC 20

Spoiler:
It's not flashy magic, but these stones thrum with power. You believe Zendara's work unblocked the menhir's ability to self repair. It will take a few days but you think all the remaining damage will fade away.

If you roll 30+ on that Arcarna check
Spoiler:
The slow regeneration of the menhirs makes you wonder about their purpose. You know they're important, that they've been built to endure time and the worst the enemy could do to them. With a moment's insight you realise they're small part of something very old, yet far grander than they at first seem. Long before the sundering, Elodin's faithful built a planar machine here, one that was designed to protect and repair Oberon. If you could repair the other stones and discover the key to their use, maybe, just maybe the sundering could be undone.

There are two other despoiled stone circles, one of them you could probably reach after a three hour hike around the rim of the crater. There's enough daylight to get there but it will be after dark by the time you return to camp. The last stone circle is up a tricky climb that likely requires a guide (Mike). Do you want to try the easy to get to stone circle or head back to camp?

You head back to camp and where hailed by Dr Munroe who asked, "How'd it go? We've had a bit of an interesting time while you were away. First Miriam found a diamond the size of my thumbnail, it just looks like a bit of glass but apparently according to Mike it'll be quite valuable when cut. Oh and we had Wyvern buzz the camp, fortunately our archery was enough to make it turn tail."

Mike nodded when Dr Munroe talked about the diamond, "Aye she was really lucky. We won't know till it's been cot on a lapidary machine but a gem of that size if the clarity is good and there's no inclusions is going to go for a thousand gold maybe two."

Sensing that you had other matters on your mind he said, "I'm guessing you'll be wanting a guide for the far coordinates. I had a look, it took longer expected to find the via ferrata. I didn't go up far because it looks like the upper part is damaged. I reckon can get you up there, but it won't be as easy as the others."

Congratulations Miriam. That is amazing.

Part of Zendara wants to treasure hunt and see if she can find that kind of treasure, but unfortunately they had more important things to worry about first. Perhaps they could stay and mine for a couple of days after? This save the world stuff was exhausting... but of course, vitally important.

It's okay. We aren't looking for easy. Just want to make sure we can get there. Thanks for guiding us. And sorry we weren't here for the wyvern attack. Hopefully they will stay off. I wonder if the nest is near here and that is why they are so persistent.

Mike replied "There's something about this place that makes animals behave oddly. Maybe it's the sounds of thunder with no obvious origin, or the areas with static electricity that make you feel like you're standing in a storm. Or perhaps that weird pulse of light that rippled across everything a few hours ago. Come to think of it, that was shortly before the Wyverns attacked."

Kn: Arcarna DC 18:
You suspect the pulse of light was some kind of side effect to you breaking the barrier. Presumably this will happen again with the other two standing stones - assuming they have the same setup.

Yukarii looked at the diamond with interest The potential value was very important. She had heard of prayer that could exchange a diamond of this worth for the soul of a deceased person bringing them back from the dead. She wasn't going to speak of this but she did make sure to remember in case it became important at some point.

Hearing of the wyvern's odd behavior Yukarii nodded in agreement with Zendara and said, "Yes, that fits with what I know as well."

By mutual consent everyone decides to rest for the night. Taking no chances, a double watch rota is drawn up and beyond the somewhat eerie night animal sounds and the occasional thunderstrike not much happens for the first few watches. During the darkest hours of the night a spectacular aurora develops, at first a hint of red in the sky developed into enormous ethereal curtains of shifting green with flashes of red. Several meteorites are spotted, one of which seemed to shoot right over your heads leaving a fiery trail. Some minutes after its passage the roll of distant thunder struck from the eastern horizon.

The remainder of the night passed without any further incident. In the morning there was a light frosting of snow but not enough to worry Mike, although he did give the dense steel grey clouds above several hard looks.

"It's going to be cold." he said, "Probably get some more snow, but it won't last round here, it never does. Still best wrap up warm."

Once you were ready to go he lead you towards the via ferrata trail. It was just as he described rather hard to spot until you were right up close. The woven steel wire rope was lightly rusted (it's fine Mike insisanted) which camouflaged it well against the rock. As before the first part of the climb was steep and it just kept on getting steeper. Fortunately you where clipped onto the wire rope by your harness so if you did fall you wouldn't go that far. You'd get some bruises yes, but you'd walk away.

Over the next twenty minutes the climb got steadily steadily harder and the weather got worse and worse, with the winds picking up and a mix of horizontal sleet and hail blasting into your faces. Then to make things worse as you neared the top, the temperature plunged and the water on the wet rocks stated to freeze.

"Ah this is getting unpleasant, and look there a huge boulder has taken out a section of the wire! We shall have to rope up, I'll take point. Step where I step and be very careful." cautioned Mike.

You don't have all that far to go really, but the last bit is by far the hardest - it's steep, it's slick and you're tired from the climb. Please each of you make a DC 18 dex, climb or str roll and one DC 20 reflex save.

Keenly aware of the long drop behind you, everyone follows Mike very carefully. To begin with it's not too bad, but the weather continues to worsen and then as you're climbing up an icy outcropping there's a sudden gust of wind. Edwin and Zendara loose their grips and there's a sudden shoosh-thump! as their fall is arrested by the rope. Fortunately Mike had been regularly clipping the rope to metal eyelets driven into the rock, but even so it was a scary moment.

"All right, don't panic." called Mike down to the pair who were dangling from the rope over a precipice, "We'll haul you up." Inch by inch, Mike was able to haul you up, using the metal eyelet like a pulley. Both Edwin and Zendara were very relieved when they were able to get their feet back on solid if slippery ground.

Just as everyone started to relax, there was a deafening peel of thunder which struck the peak above you. Suddenly a small cascade of rocks came tumbling down. Yukarii, Edwin and Xindrya managed to throw themselves mostly out of harm's way but Mike and Zendara got struck by falling rocks, leaving both of them bruised and bleeding.

The remainder of the climb was cold and painful for the wounded. The weather was getting progressively worse, but at least the ground at the crater rim was flat in a narrow band. You gaze down the ash plane on the other side and marvelled as it was rapidly turning white from the snow.

"I think we'd better keep moving." said Mile, "There's not much in the way of shelter up here. Best do what you came to do and get down to the relative warmth of the crater floor."

So you spent the next half hour picking your way along the crater, with sleet and snow blowing into your eyes. Eventually Edwin spotted the outline of something in the distance, which turned out to be another set of standing stones. Just like before there was a thin shimmering barrier protecting them and curiously the area inside looked to be entirely dry and sheltered.

Perception DC 18:
It's hard to make out any detail before you get closer, but you think the stones have been desecrated just like at the other circle...

Perception DC 22:
In the middle of the standing stones you spot the spectral image of a once proud looking man who had his eyes torn out among other painful looking wounds. He seems to be watching you...

Kn: Religion DC 17

Spoiler:
This apparition appears to be a wraith, a powerful one by your estimation.

As Zendara gets closer, she looks around for a good place to shoot from, intending to go with the same plan that they had attempted previously. Especially since she was wounded, she wanted a good place to be able to attack at a distance if there was a similar guardian.

Turns out you have made an extensive study of undead and you know pretty much everything there is to know about Zealot Wraiths - which this is. Once a cleric in life they're now incorporeal, with a touch that curses it's victim to share in their sorrow. You know that a strongly presented holy symbol will keep them at bay, although it won't harm them. They can channel energy as an area effect or through their touch.

So attack from a distance as much as possible? It's trapped in there like the last one, correct?

Yes that sounds like a decent plan and it does appear to be trapped, of course when the barrier is broken it'll come looking for some tasty souls to devour. I hope Edwin is still around, we may need him for the combat.

Zendara will climb to a higher, less accessible position to fire from that has good sightlines for the target area. Sorry for the delay, got distracted!

Xindra prepares for the battle to come casting numerous spells, the air around her begins to crackle faintly and she's surrounded a shimmer of heat.

Zendara climbs up a rocky outcrop which gives her an excellent view of the stone circle. She can see the faint outline of the protective barrier and the guardian spirit within.

I'm going to assume everyone just pounds the barrier down with ranged attacks.
As before the barrier took a beating, deflecting the arrows and a thin tracery of redness in the air grew in strength to a powerful band of red lightning which burst with a deafening roar! The very earth seemed to shiver in response.

A moment passed and the spectral figure within let out a thin piercing wail as it headed towards Edwin, Zendara and Yukarii!

I don't think i can parry unless i have ghost touch weapon, so no parry & reposte this combat.

Palace of Birdsong| Shards of Oberon map | War for the crown maps

Very cautiously, Xindyra moved into attack the wraith. She feels a slight tug as her weapon moves accurately through it, she's pretty sure it did something because it seemed to bleed shadowstuff.

The wraith made a hissing sound that set your teeth on edge, and it lashed out at Xindyra who managed, barely, to dance away.

Touch: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 8 <--- MISS

Yukarii's spell sent a small fusilade of missiles slamming into it, blasting off small puffs of shadowstuff.

Edwin is too complex for me to want to bot, but anyone is welcome to for now.

Zendara sent several arrows flying towards the wraith. The first hit was very accurate passing straight through it's centre of mass, the second went wide. Again the arrow seemed to hurt it, with a gout of shadow spurting out along with the arrow. Most of the speed had gone from the one that hit and it fell undamaged on the floor a few feet away, the one that missed however buried itself up to the fletchings in the grass some distance away.

Prior to battle, Edwin Whiskers, esq., casted some buffs on himself.
I saw no non-magical shields or armor in his inventory, so his header AC values should be it. His touch AC is 20.

He activates his blade to become undead bane, and swift action to make it magical. He expands his defence with mirror image.
Extra Edwins: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

From what i see, his blade has 5 ability points a/day. Edwin has 13 a/day.

From his blade's pool, he activates (Strike: +2 to dmg rolls for 1 minute)
From his own pool from occultist, he enhances his blade with +2, adding ghost touch quality to it.

When the rest of you struck the wraith there was some resistance, perhaps a bit like hitting water. For Edwin however, his blade struck solidly causing significant damage, ripping open a long slash from which a cloud of shadow stuff boiled off!

Xindrya felt a slight tug as her rapier ran the wraith through, she put some force behind the blow so a good portion of her arm went through it. The sensation was like plunging an arm into an ice cold bath.

Burned by the warmth of Xindrya's arm, the wraith tilted it's insubstantial head up to the sky and screamed! A tidal wave of burning blackness exploded out from it, washing over everyone close by.

Realizing that she was the only one with reliable damage against the wraith Yukarii unleashed another flurry of magical missiles at it.

magic missile: 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (4, 2, 1) + 3 = 10

Palace of Birdsong| Shards of Oberon map | War for the crown maps

With a word of power, Yukarii sent another miniature fusillade of missiles slamming into the wraith which detonated resulting in numerous small clouds of shadow stuff.

Edwin's scimitar flashed as it bit deeply into the wraith, causing it to wail with such ferocity that it made your teeth chatter.

No crits against incorporeal targets unless Edwin has some trick I'm not aware of.

Zendara's bow thrummed as a pair of arrows streaked towards the wraith. One hit dead center in the wraith's damaged centre of mass, leaving a trail of shadow stuff behind it as it rapidly fell to the ground. The other arrow was lost in the distance.

Xindrya readied to jab at it once more but there was a sudden gust of wind and the wraith faded away. Moments later there was a powerful peal of thunder as a bolt of lightning struck one of the standing stones, curiously this didn't seem to do any visible damage beyond causing it to glow softly.

Combat over. Same deal as before, the standing stones have been defaced.
