Hrarsk Hghaftig |
Hrarsk pants some more as he moves up the stairs as fast as his limping legs can take him, to stand next to the creature.
Just movement, 30 ft.
GM Jhaeman |
Miklos’ falcata cuts deep into the hulking humanoid’s chest, drawing blood and a cry of pain. But the dark-furred creature still has the wherewithal to swing its morningstar at Hrarsk’s head when the half-orc rushes into the fracas!
Attack of opportunity for moving through threatened square: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
But Hrarsk manages to duck just in time, and the bludgeoning weapon glances off his helmet.
Narciso, Jovan, and Herr Magt Jaegar can still go this round before the enemy.
Narciso 10 |
We face a bugbear; there are probably more about Narciso moves 20 ft east, while drawing his estoc. He will attempt to intimidate the enemy.
Intimidate: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20
Jovan Stonebriar |
Is Jovan now aware of the bugbear next to him?
The fighter swings his axe at the creature.
Melee (great axe), power attack: 1d20 + 11 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 11 - 2 = 13
Damage (S), power attack w/two-handed weapon: 1d12 + 11 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 11 + 6 = 27
The armored fighter clumps up the steps.
Double move (likely provoking AoO from bugbear) and ending turn adjacent to Miklos.
GM Jhaeman |
Jovan rushes up the steps, causing them to creak loudly as they bend under his armored weight. Standing next to Miklos and Hrarsk, the trio have the bugbear cornered! And even better, the glinting steel of Narciso's estoc catches the bugbear's attention. Trapped and wounded, the bugbear feels fear for the first time since it arrived in Magnimar.
The bugbear on the loft is Shaken for two rounds (-2 on attacks, saves, skill checks, and ability checks).
So far, only Herr Magt Jaegar has realised there's a second bugbear hiding in the warehouse (on the far side of the crates opposite the door) and he hasn't said anything yet. :) Since the cat's out of the bag, I'll go ahead put the token on the map, but please don't metagame.
Jovan, you don't have to worry about an AoO. You're not leaving a threatened square and the bugbear on the loft has already taken his AoO anyways.
Narciso, could you put your token where you are--I'm not sure where you plan to end up with your movement. You'll need to stop within 30' of the bugbear on the loft in order for your Demoralize to work.
Herr Magt Jaeger |
Oops, I figured my turn was just catching up.
Bring your best no-neck! Magt charges forward slashing at the goblinoid with his polearm.
horse chopper att: 1d20 + 11 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 11 + 2 = 21, if hits, horse chopper dam: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Not certain if it gets cover from the crates. I can't move my icon on the phone. Please move me 5 squares to the right and one square up.
GM Jhaeman |
As Narciso rushes into the warehouse, he's shocked to see a second bugbear crouching down behind some crates. Fortunately, Herr Magt Jaeger spots the danger and rushes in behind the swordsman. The bloodrager swings his horsechopper in a wide arc and cuts deeply into the bugbear's arm. The bugbear closes the distance to make wielding a reach weapon cumbersome. ”When my master has consumed the flesh of your friends, your innards shall be my reward for faithful service” it says in a calm albeit creepy whisper as it swings its spiked morningstar.
5’ step for the bugbear, then an attack roll on Herr Magt Jaegar.
Bugbear “B” Attack vs. Herr Magt Jaegar: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
But the attack doesn't connect.
Upon the loft, the cornered and badly wounded bugbear swings wildly at Hrarsk!
Bugbear “A” Attack (Shaken) vs. Hrarsk: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Although the morningstar smashes into the half-orc's armor with a resounding thud, the armor keeps its occupant safe.
Narciso 10 |
Narciso raises his estoc above his head swinging it about (Dazzling Display).
Intimidate: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20
How will you do that when your entrails will be spread before me?
GM Jhaeman |
Something suddenly catches the bugbears' attention, and they look to the far end of the loft with adoration and increased confidence. A goblin, wearing little clothing and holding no weapons, has stepped out from behind its hiding place under the table. It looks harmless, but there's a strange gleam in its eyes, and with a flourish of magical energy, begins rapidly blinking in and out of existence!
Narciso Perception Check w/ -5 distance penalty: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Herr Magt Jaegar Perception Check w/ -5 distance penalty: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
Jovan Perception check w/ -5 distance penalty: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (6) - 3 = 3
Hrarsk Perception Check w/ -5 distance penalty: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (15) - 1 = 14
Miklos Perception Check w/ -5 distance penalty: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
Miklos, Jovan, Herr Magt Jaegar, and Hrarsk can go!
Hrarsk Hghaftig |
Hrarsk's falchion whizzes through the bugbear's clothing, nearly piercing the creature's heart.
Attack (Power Attack): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Confirm critical: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Damage: 2d4 + 6 ⇒ (3, 2) + 6 = 11
Critical Damage: 2d4 + 6 ⇒ (1, 3) + 6 = 10
Jovan Stonebriar |
Seeing the bugbear before him felled, Jovan moves toward the goblin, warning, "You saw how quickly we dispatched the larger one. You will take half the time if you don't tell us where to find the scholar, Estani Sulemi."
Double move
GM Jhaeman |
The goblin says something in a harsh, guttural tongue.
Jovan, you notice that in the northeast corner of the loft are a pile of shredded blankets and old broadsheets. The pile shakes occasionally.
Miklos Therinor |
Miklos hops over the rail and comes up behind the bugbear, blade flashing as he brings it to bear. He readies a parrying defense with hopes he can use a riposte against the creature.
attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 221d8 + 4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 3 = 8acrobatics: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30
Narciso 10 |
Narciso will move up and ready an action to intimidate the "goblin" when it is in range. He will also attempt to identify the creature.
Knowledge Local: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Intimidate: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (11) + 14 = 25
You do not scare us whatever you are!
GM Jhaeman |
Narciso can't figure out what this thing really is, but his sudden intimidating shout does seem to startle it.
Goblin is shaken for 2 rounds
The goblin traces glowing arcane runes in the air, and Jovan feels a hostile intrusion in his mind! The goblin then retreats next to the table.
Jovan, please roll a DC 16 Will saving throw. This is an enchantment (compulsion), emotion, and mind-affecting effect for the purpose of any special modifiers you might have to the roll.
Miklos, Jovan, Hrarsk, and Herr Magt Jaegar can go!
Jovan Stonebriar |
Will (DC 16): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Shaking off the goblin's spell, the Qadiran man strides forward. "You choose to hold your tongue?" he asks rhetorically as he brings his axe down on the creature. "Then you shall soon be parted from it!"
Melee (adamantine great axe (2h) w/power attack: 1d20 + 11 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 11 - 2 = 29
Damage (S): 1d12 + 11 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 11 + 6 = 28
Confirm Crit?: 1d20 + 11 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 11 - 2 = 27
Add Damage if Crit: 1d12 + 11 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 11 + 6 = 29
Jovan Stonebriar |
Jovan curses in his native tongue as the goblin blinks away just as his axe was about to decapitate the fiend. He calls out to his allies, "I will finish this spellcasting vermin! Find Estani! I believe he is up here in the loft, struggling beneath the blankets!"
Hrarsk Hghaftig |
Hrarsk runs as fast as his feeble legs can take him to engage the goblin-like creature.
Only movement (run). Moving in diagonally, so no AoO this time
Miklos Therinor |
Down the stairs, up the stairs...can someone make up my mind, please? Miklos says, with a melodramatic "ugh" as he bounds back up the stairs as quick as he can.
double move up the stairs towards the loft...unsure where the loft can be accessed from though...can someone put me near it please...ty!
Narciso 10 |
Narciso 5 ft steps south. Pulls his grappling hook out that is still attached to the knotted rope and chuck it to catch the upstairs railing.
Grappling Hook: 1d20 + 7 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 7 - 2 = 11
GM Jhaeman |
Miklos races up the stairs, and seconds later Narciso lands a solid hold on the railing with his grappling hook.
The goblin, facing two strong warriors, backs up slightly. Once again, it starts tracing arcane runes in the air while staring intently at Jovan with glowing eyes! But it has left an opening in its defenses . . .
The goblin takes a 5' step and then starts to cast a spell, gambling on its blinking to keep it safe instead of a high concentration check. Jovan, you'll get an attack of opportunity here.
Jovan Stonebriar |
"That mistake will be your last!" Jovan declares as he again swings in an effort to separate the creature's head from its neck.
Melee (adamantine great axe (2h) w/power attack: 1d20 + 11 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 11 - 2 = 28
Damage (S): 1d12 + 11 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 11 + 6 = 29
Blink? (1-50 misses, 51-100 hits): 1d100 ⇒ 100
GM Jhaeman |
Jovan doesn't miss this time! He lands a solid blow, cutting deep into the "goblin's" furry skin. Its spell is disrupted, and it drops to all fours, snarling.
Initiative Order: Round 5
Narciso (20)
Goblin (16)
Miklos (14)
Jovan (11)
Hrarsk (9)
Herr Magt Jaeger (7)
Bold may go!
Jovan Stonebriar |
"This is no ordinary goblin!" Jovan cries as he tries to box the creature in and brings his axe to bear
Melee (adamantine great axe (2h) w/power attack: 1d20 + 11 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 11 - 2 = 27
Damage (S): 1d12 + 11 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 11 + 6 = 29
Blink? (1-50 misses, 51-100 hits): 1d100 ⇒ 85
Hrarsk Hghaftig |
Hrarsk slams his falchion into the goblin and hits it again with an extra-powerful lunge.
Attack (PA): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Confirm: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Blink (2=hit): 1d2 ⇒ 2
Damage: 2d4 + 3 ⇒ (4, 1) + 3 = 8
Critical Damage: 2d4 + 3 ⇒ (2, 2) + 3 = 7
GM Jhaeman |
Hrarsk’s falchion cuts to the bone, and the monster’s howl turns into a whimper as it collapses to the ground.
A quick search of the loft reveals a bound and gagged man hidden under a pile of refuse. Although malnourished and weakened from his ordeal, Estani Sulemi is still alive! Tears well in his eyes as he’s freed from his bonds. ”You . . . you must be Pathfinders! I didn’t know if my messages were getting through or not. That . . . that . . . thing was going to eat me! I owe all of you my life! I’ll never forget what you’ve done for me today.”
GM Jhaeman |
Sulemi replies, "Yes . . . yes, I think so. I think it was a creature from another plane called a barghest! I occasionally found reference to them in my research. Apparently, they consume a sentient creature every full moon until they shed their skin like a snake and grow into an even more demonic being! If you hadn't arrived when you did, I would have been killed in a matter of days."
Narciso 10 |
Why you though? If it just needed to eat something, it could have grabbed anyone off the streat or buy a slave. Why did it kidnap you and hold you for a month?
Hrarsk Hghaftig |
Hrarsk encourages everyone who was wounded (including Estani) to line up, and he channels positive energy at them.
2d6 ⇒ (2, 4) = 6
"Funny creature," Hrarsk snorts. "I sure hope Golarion isn't being invaded by those things."
Jovan Stonebriar |
"My assessment was correct, then: no ordinary goblin!" Jovan confirms with a smirk, as he wipes the gore from the blades of his axe.
"The Society will be pleased to know that you are safe." he tells he scholar. "We can escort you to Heidmarch Manor, if you'd like."
GM Jhaeman |
Sulemi nods, and makes it outside with your assistance. In his current condition, you realise walking with him through the summer's heat all the way back to Heidmarch Manor would be inviting further disaster. But a hired hansom cab does the trick, and it's not long before you've returned the historian safely to Sheila Heidmarch. The Venture-Captain is quite pleased with your work, and promises that your contribution to the Society's efforts in Varisia won't soon be forgotten.
And that's our conclusion. Thanks again everyone for playing! I really enjoyed the session. Please see the discussion thread for info on how to get your Chronicle.
