Nuregore's shack is right where the Pathfinders left it. As Xilt steps forward to knock, the door swings open. "As I foresaw, you are back," the troll's familiar voice announces. "Tell me, what have you learned since our last convergence?"

As the Pathfinders share their rumors with her, the troll nods thoughtfully. "This is most helpful," she announces. "Much less danger involved, many fewer branches to search. Only 100 pieces of gold to see your fate - do we have a deal?"

”May the Son of a Shepherd trade in bacon or other assorted productions?”

He’s got five pounds of bacon and another five of chicken, if the troll wants more meat, and vegetables too

"Looks like the party was right."

He turns to Dolph.

"We can handle the payment for now."

"Excellent. Come inside then," Nuregore says with a grin. Once all the Pathfinders are inside, she gathers them in a circle.

“I can tell you something of where you should go,” she continues as she kneels on the ground, draws a long knife from her belt and, with a powerful swipe, slices the blade across her belly. She carefully reaches inside her abdomen and draws forth her glistening internal organs, lifting them to her eye level. She does not respond to the powerful odor that wells forth, and instead studies her intestines intently.

The troll frowns and her eyes narrow. She sets her knife and intestines on the ground, then reaches deeper into her abdomen, finally drawing out her stomach. She palpates it gently as if feeling for something. “The walls are weak and it crumbles easily, the place you seek. A place beneath and below, yet there is much light.” A rumbling groan originates from her stomach, the gurgle startlingly loud. Nuregore raises her eyebrows and looks at the group. “It falls apart. Beware.”

With careful skill, Nuregore shoves her innards back and presses the skin together. Her greenish hide knits together quickly and she stands. “Those are the visions I see. Now, the payment.” Once she has her gold, she gently encourages the Pathfinders back out onto the street.

As the Pathfinders head for the underground tunnels, they are stopped by a patrol of guards in dark leather armor. ”Whoa there friends,” one of them says firmly, ”down that way lies the Halflight Path. Nobody goes there without two things - permission from the Duskwardens, and a clear destination so we don’t have to waste time searching miles of tunnels for your remains. Until you have those things, I’m not sorry to say that you’ll need to stay in the safety of the city.” She firmly meets the Pathfinders’ gazes, obviously set in her orders and position.

The other guards firmly block the path forward, the shortest one helpfully adding, ”The captain’s office is over thataway!”

The Duskwarden's directions take the Pathfinders to the Guildhouse, a squat and solid structure with a placard beard the Duskwardens' insignia of a twisted arch in blue and gold. At the mention of Horus's name, the door guard quickly shepherds them inside and brings them to a small office where a half-elf woman is seated. "Captain Talbren, they said they're from Ilaktya!" The guard shudders slightly as Horus's name leaves his lips and quickly returns to his post.

As Orst explains the situation, Talbren's face remains neutral. "We’re always glad to have competent help around here. Things have definitely seemed more riled up than usual down by the Undercity,” She pauses for a moment. “How can I help, Pathfinders?"

"We have visited one of the Augurs and she mentioned a place where the walls crumble easily and yet there is much light. I know this is cryptic but do you know of any areas of the underground that matches this description? Even if you have a map of the underground that might help."

He pauses for a moment.

"Otherwise we will have to wander a bit and let our fate find us.
Our experience as Murder Hobos Pathfinders means that we have dealt with these sorts of threats on a repeated basis so I am certain we can resolve this issue."

"Also not to worry if our party takes a bad turn. Pathfinder Society will send a team for body recovery. This way you will not be put out."

"We would appreciate your permission to pursue whatever manner of beast it is that has been inflicting damage and taking citizens for the Ankar-Te district. We have a description from and eye witness and have conducted the Augars both of which point us at the halflight Path. If we could consult with your scouts for likely liars and make a map copy of the relevant known passages that would be greatly appreciated. We are bound to attempt to stop the problems in Ankar-Te by Horus Ilaktya and thus by our society."
Orst says honestly and will explain further about the clues if pushed.
"I respect the your position and the reasoning behind the prohibition to not let people wander out into danger. We are not aimless and foolish. We have a task and will file a route with your agency that will cover our planned path. We will carry whatever device you require so that you can divine our location should you so desire should we fail to return as arranged. We do not mean to be a burden; we are hoping to help."

Talbren nods. "If you’re on a mission for one of the power brokers here in town, of course. We don’t want to take sides in their squabbles and prefer to help everyone. I have a list here of some vaults where we’ve noticed disturbances or unusual levels of activity. Maybe that will help narrow it down." She searches her desk for a moment before passing the paladin a sheet of parchment.

Based on the information we’ve gathered so far, the following vaults seem most likely to be the source of the problems.

Blighted Well: Spiral stairway cut into rock leading to unknown depth.
Burrower’s Delve: Tunnels carved by unknown creature. Passages very smooth.
Frall’s Wake: Crypt-like. Perpetual low moaning throughout. Source unknown.
Scintillating Halls: Greenish-gray glow to the water. Large crystalline structures.
Scrivener’s Despair: Words written down disappear from pages and reappear on walls.
Shallow Dive: Partially submerged. Waters very clear.
Shining Deep: Numerous luminescent crystals throughout. Several cave-ins.
Sparklegrim Passage: Probable connection to the Darklands. Many disappearances nearby.
Torturer’s Pain: Prone to collapse in places. Unidentified metal devices on walls.
Vexing Grove: Fully-grown maple trees with unusual growths on leaves.

"Any of those look like the one you're after?" the Duskwarden captain asks.

After waiting for other opinions, Orst approaches the Captian and politely states, "We ask for permission to copy maps leading to, between, and from Shining Deep and Scintillating hall. We will try them and return for more information should these prove empty." He continues, "Now we would appreciate any recommendations regarding equipment you suggest. Plus are there any warnings or other things we should know about these areas?"

After her answer, Orst will thank her for her time and move off to make preparations.

"I'll do you one better than that," Talbren says as she stands. A faint grin cracks her serious demeanor as she continues, "I'll take you down myself. Been cooped up in here too long. Besides, what's the point of being the captain if you can't assign yourself some fieldwork every so often? And it would be a chance to see Pathfinders in action. I've heard the stories, but never seen the real deal." She pauses for a moment, then adds, "You are the real deal, are you not?" It is difficult to say whether she is joking or not.

"You want a warning? It's dangerous and you shouldn't go there." Now Talbren is clearly (and unsuccessfully) trying to hide her mirth. "But it can get dark in the vaults, even the lit ones like Shining Deep. And be prepared for trouble - once in a while a creature creeps out of the vaults and onto the Halflight Path, which is where we Duskwardens step in. Who knows what kind of nest you'll be stepping into."

Xilt, we can assume that the Pathfinders left the inn around 9:00 (8:00 wakeup and an hour to prepare spells), then spent about 3 hours meeting with Horus and gathering information. That would make it 12:00 now - just in time for lunch!

"Now then, once you're ready we can depart. I'll meet you by the entrance to the Halflight Path."

As the Pathfinders depart from Kaer Maga down the Halflight Path, Talbren warns them to stay silent during the journey to the vault. "And that includes your... menagerie," she adds. "Don't want to attract any unnecessary attention from anything lurking in the dark."

After several hours of quiet travel through dark tunnels, Talbren raises a hand and stops abruptly. Reaching into her uniform pocket, she withdraws a handful of glowing crystals on leather cords. "These crystals are called halflight charms," she whispers. "Each of you should carry one with you. They provide a bit of light, but that is not their primary function. If you find yourselves in dire straits, clutch the amulet and call for help. The nearest Duskwardens will learn your location and come to assist." She leans closer. "Do not call for us lightly. The disturbance in this vault provides me and my fellow Duskwardens with an opportunity to see the mettle of the Pathfinder Society for ourselves. However, if your life is truly in danger, don't let pride get in the way of good sense. Activate the charm and flee." Any hints of mirth are gone from her face.

Witch's Winter Holiday

I will point out that Sammy's climb speed is 20 ft, meaning he's sneaking at 10 ft. I will also point out that Sammy does not have darkvision.

As the Pathfinders enter the vault, they find themselves in a chamber with smooth walls - except for where part of the ceiling has collapsed, creating a rubble pile that reaches towards the center of the room. Just to the south of this pile, a natural chimney’s low whistling hints at fresh air entering the cavern from somewhere below. A shallow pool southeast of this hole is slowly refreshed by a steady drip of water from above. Tunnels exit the room to the north and southeast, with another passage to the east branching off the northern tunnel.

The walls and ceilings here do not look entirely stable. If disturbed (such as by a loud noise or any sort of digging), they could easily collapse.

Map is up! Lighting is currently dim, meaning anyone without darkvision is unable to see clearly. Three paths to choose from.
