Mutants and Masterminds 3rd Edition Campaign

1 to 50 of 73 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

WELCOME TO THE BOOMTOWN:
Its founders dubbed Emerald City “the City of Destiny,” because for them it was the last stop on the continent’s edge. With nothing but the deep blue sea beyond, a man had no choice but to meet his fate there—whatever it was. Even in the present age of supersonic jets and a shrinking globe, Emerald City remains the last stop for most who journey there, both for reasons joyous and tragic. Now, it’s the heroes’ turn to come face to face with their destiny.

Do you have what it takes? Emerald City needs heroes are you one of those heroes?

We will be using Discord, Roll20 and This Paizo Board.

You don’t need any prior experience in Mutants and Masterminds. I would suggest taking a look at D20 Hero SRD or getting yourself the Deluxe Heroes Handbook.

Here is what I would like from you for your application:

#1) Introduce Yourself:

  • Who are you?

  • What do you enjoy about roleplaying?

  • Who is your Favorite Super Hero and why?

  • Why do you want to play a superhero RPG?

  • What is your Mutants and Masterminds Experience?

  • What is your PBP Experience?

  • What is your Discord ID?

  • #2) Read through Doomed Hero Guide to PBP and Painlords Guide to PBP
Please share something you learned from these two guidebook.

#3) Create a character background, You will be proposing your identity before you received your powers. Tell me about your character. Remember to think about why you are becoming a hero once you receive powers.

Your Hero must be a Hero!

Here is a intro to Emerald City: Emerald City Visitors Guide

Here is a primer for understanding the city a little better: Emerald City Primer

As you create your identity there are some things to think about for your hero check out this document about Team Roles Please let me know what roles you see your hero in: Team Roles

Also Check out this document about: What type of hero are you? What have you studied? Also check out the words that describe your hero please select the ones your hero best identifies with. What Type of Hero Are You?

Types of Characters I am looking for: Heroes who can work together as a part of a team.

Types of Characters I am not looking for: Lone Wolf types of heroes, or Anti Heroes.

Allowed Materials: Hero High Revised, Basic Hero Handbook; Hero Handbook, Hero Deluxe Handbook, Gadgets Guide, Power Profiles, Supernatural Handbook, Cosmic Handbook

Banned Materials: No 3rd Party Materials

As you plan your hero and think of a power set not a full build we will be building our heroes as a group through Discord discussions. Please put your possible Archetypes/Power Sets with in your application though.

Your Power Source will all be a mutation event and you will all have a common origin event.

This recruitment will run for two weeks plus a couple days, Ill be closing recruitment on the 26th. I will have a finalized group by 30th maybe sooner. I will be taking a minimum of 4 heroes but up to 6 heroes for this campaign.

Post you are interested and then post your character once you have it all finished if you have question either DM me or put it in the thread. I’ll try to keep an update every day or so of people who have characters entered and who are interested.

I'm going to hold you to the same standard as I hold myself: I expect you to post as often as is needed, adjusting to the pace of the group, as set by me. I plan to post at least once per day. When you do post, I expect you to push the action/story/RP or leave/pick up RP hooks. If our pacing changes to the point of negatively impacting your ability to keep up, I hope and expect that you will talk to me earlier rather than later. I promise to do the same if our positions are reversed, West coast mornings and nights will be my most active times posting.

To be honest I have only ran one Play by Post so if that is a problem for you I’m just putting it out there right from the beginning.

If you have any questions or if I missed anything please feel free to DM me or ask on this thread

I can be contacted via Discord: Virtuegm55#9872

    Wait, M&M 3E has third-party materials? I didn't know that. XD

    Introduction:
Hello! I'm Rednal, and I enjoy roleplaying because it allows me to work on creative character ideas and have some fun gaming with other people. I enjoy being able to put a bit of myself into a world, more than just moving tokens on a board.

As Superheroes go, I'm not entirely sure I have a favorite... but I suppose if anything, it might be Star Power. Not a famous name, but I appreciate that the creators have taken great care to show the human side of the hero (and the value and importance of their companions and supporters). Good stuff.

As for playing a Superhero RPG, well... I love Pathfinder and it's my main system, but occasionally, I like to play with a different style and level of power. M&M 3E is one of my favorite secondary systems, though I haven't gotten to play as much as I'd like. Playing here would help fix that.

I have extensive PbP experience over multiple years here on Paizo. I know at least one of the games I'm in has been going slowly but steadily since 2014, which I think aptly demonstrates that I'm unlikely to simply vanish two weeks after we start. XD My Discord ID is Rednal#6450.

    PbP Guides:
Painlord said it best when he noted that posts should always try to push the game forward. o wo/ You don't need to pause every paragraph and ask if we, as players, wanna do heroic stuff. I mean, worst case, ask us over Discord. Keep the game going forward and we're usually fine. Don't stop just to see if we're still nodding.

    Character Background:
    Role: Artillery
    Hero Type: Gentle (Minor: Intellectual/Steady)
    Build: Weather Master

Althea is a nurse at the hospital on University Hill (itself a part of the University of Washington, although not quite as popular as the main campus areas in Seattle). Most of the staff consider her to be friendly, if a little on the quiet side. Her strong presence and general awareness of situations ensure that the job tends to get done.

What most of her patients don't realize is that being a nurse isn't her main job. She's far more intelligent than most of her coworkers realize, and the Director of the Hospital (a Professor at the University Branch, as schedules permit) hired her specifically to get her help with medical research and assistance during some of the most complicated treatments, where her immense expertise in medicine and training in applying treatment allow her to regularly overcome formidable threats to the lives of her patients.

Much of her relaxed attitude comes from her confidence that she'll be able to handle situations that come up - supported by the fact that she's allowed to work on essentially her own schedule. That's not something University Hospitals typically go for, but the Director considers it a small price for retaining her help (and the fact that she tends to show up regularly and work as long - or even longer - than other people means there aren't many complaints).

    ----------------

As a Hero, Althea possesses mastery of weather powers. It frustrates her that she has almost no ability to heal other people with her talents - something about the way she manipulates electricity allows her to accelerate her own healing, but she can't apply it to others unless it's some manifestation of a weather effect, such as reforming a person made of ice.

She generally dislikes combat and having to hurt people, but she understands that some people are more like a disease on society and need to be stopped before they'll do further harm.

That said, she refuses to kill unless it would be a mercy for the patient. Her ultimate goal is to save lives - and she doesn't care about matters like the cost of incarcerating a super-criminal.

Her powers mostly fall into two categories: active and passive weather control. The passive effects include things like a small personal atmosphere that protects her from the environment and makes her quite hard to harm by blowing effects away before they can reach her, while her active power includes multiple ways of managing weather and the components thereof. She's particularly skilled with wind, ice, and electricity, but is capable of a variety of creative applications. In the end, however, all of her abilities tie back to control of the weather, and that imposes some limits on what she can and can't do. (She still doesn't understand why she can heal herself by manipulating electricity but not others. It seems to be a specific hiccup in the way her mutation functions.)

This is a great format please try to fill your application out like this. Thanks

    Introduction:

Hey there, my name is Claude AKA GreyDestiny. I enjoy roleplaying because it's taking an active role in a collaborative creative story.

Choosing a favorite superhero is pretty tough (my favorite shifts often). I will go with Moon Knight, though. Specifically in the run where he was written by Jeff Lemire. It was interesting to see a superhero comic try to explore mental disorders, and the run had a fun mystery vibe that ended on a positive tone that I really appreciated. He is a violent hero, which creates some really visceral fight scenes that carry a sense of danger. It's not something that I'd want to emulate in a game like this, but I enjoyed reading it.

I would really enjoy playing in a long-running superhero RPG because I enjoy characterization and plots that have a pay off.

I've been GMing one Mutants and Masterminds 3e game for about two years, and just started running another one. I've played in a couple of one-shots as well, but most of my experience is as a GM.

My PbB experience is pretty limited. I used to run a roleplaying guild on Neopets, and participated on the other open boards. Excited to try it out again after all this time.

    PbP Guides:

Doomed Hero's Guide will be useful for a quick reference as I get up to speed with PbP. Painlord's advice about having hooks and motivations is really useful, and something that I plan to incorporate in my application.

    Character Background:

    Role:Infantry/Psi-Ops
    Hero Type:Clever/Gallant
    Build:

Shawn Allen is a hard working college sophomore attending Emerald City University. He is studying architecture and is a wide receiver on football team (go Sasquatches!). He grew up in Freedom City as child, watching the daring rescues performed not only by the superheroes of the city but also by his father who served on the STAR Squad. His family moved away from Freedom City after his father was seriously injured on duty and settled in Oregon. He briefly considered going to Freedom City for his college educated, but received a scholarship from ECU and decided to attend there. He's a friendly guy who tries not to party too much. It's his goal to make his parents proud as a star football player, though it is beginning to interfere with his grades. He trains hard, always pushing his physical limits.

    -------
The powerset I'm thinking of going with is sort of a Tactile Telekinesis. I want him to have some decent range options, but ones that tax him a bit. He'd mostly fight up close and personal. Leaping into danger, and keeping heavy objects from crushing civilians.

Addendum for Althea (Weather And Hero Work):
What Is Weather and Atmosphere As It Relates To Althea's Powers?

As far as Althea's powers go, 'Weather' seems to be 'anything that is or is associated with relatively common atmospheric effects above the ground'. For example, she can transform herself into wind, lightning, ice, water, or even smoke because those are all things that move through the sky. Underwater is still an atmosphere of sorts despite being liquid instead of gas, so her powers don't shut off when she goes for a swim.

It's suspected that she can also manipulate things like dust and sand (such as from dust storms in the desert) or even fire (from fire tornadoes), though she doesn't seem to rely on such effects very often. Her Weather Body may be Insubstantial 2 instead of Insubstantial 3 based on the exact element she's drawing on.

Most of the time, Althea sticks with wind, ice, and lightning. She's more than smart enough to have thought of other applications for her abilities - but she believes that it's good to have a few surprises in store. After all, it's hard for a villain to plan for what you can do if they don't know the full extent of your abilities.

For that matter, while Althea uses her powers to help people, she doesn't think of beating villains as her main job. She will if she has to, but she thinks protecting innocents is more important. When she focuses entirely on fighting, it's because she believes a villain is too great of a threat and the best way to minimize harm is to stop them, even if it means allowing people she could save to be hurt. This doesn't mean she likes it - only that she believes it's necessary. It is, in effect, an application of triage principles: do what you can to minimize harm to as many as you can, even if it means abandoning some who could be saved. It's a lot harder to get into situations where saving others is impossible when others are supporting you, though, which is why Althea strongly values her relationship with other heroes and will go out of her way to help them even when she doesn't have a personal stake in what's going on.

When she needs to fight, Althea doesn't see herself as breaking her oath as a nurse. In her view, stopping a villain (i.e. one who is threatening harm to innocent people) is something like injecting a patient with a shot or using chemical therapies with unpleasant side effects. In the strictest sense, you are hurting the patient - but only because that's what's necessary to heal them. She pretty much never uses force to stop someone unless they've harmed others, threatened to harm others, or instigated a situation where peaceful solutions simply aren't practical (such as not being in control of themselves because their powers went berserk, requiring a level of force to stop them so they can be turned back to normal).

Althea has a strong code of ethics, but this shouldn't be misunderstood as weakness or being likely to hesitate when action needs to be taken. She simply has standards that are a bit different from most people - and like any good nurse, she'll do just about anything to protect her patient (which, when doing hero work, is society as a whole).

Two applications in can't wait to read some more.

Same. XD I don't think I've played a game with a shared power origin before.

Because I can't get enough of superhero games:

    Introduction:

Who are you? Vrog Skyreaver. If you've spent any time in the PBP forums here in the last 5-6 years, you've probably at least seen one of my posts.

What do you enjoy about roleplaying? Getting a chance to create stories in a way like no other medium.

Who is your Favorite Super Hero and why? Captain America; He is willing to die for his beliefs, and thanks to early 2000's authors, he did quite alot.

Why do you want to play a superhero RPG? I find that nothing tells stories of freedom quite like super powers related stories.

What is your Mutants and Masterminds Experience? I played in a long running 2E campaign, as well as a 3E DC Adventures game.

What is your PBP Experience? My PBP history is extensive on this forum.

What is your Discord ID? Not sure off the top of my head. I can update this evening after I get home.

    PBP Guides:

#2) Read through Doomed Hero Guide to PBP and Painlords Guide to PBP
Please share something you learned from these two guidebook. Not something I learned so much as something I've always believed:
    Doomed Hero wrote:
Thou Shall Not Assume The Actions Of Others.

It can be far to easy a trap for lazy writing to fall into, and it's disrespectful to those you play with.

    Character Background:

Joseph Colins is the "IT Guy" for Quantum Biotech, a small company that specializes in understanding the underlying causes of people gaining super powers, with the eventual goal of allowing people to gain new abilities for a price or lose abilities if they are too uncontrollable or costly for the person having them.

Joseph chose to work at Quantum Biotech because he is a power otaku. He spends his time at work between service requests scouring powers forums and talking with others about how to gain your own super powers. He even tried to give himself invulnerability by having his cousin hit him in the ribs with a sledge hammer, but it didn't work and he spent several months in the hospital.

Now, however, Jospeh just obsesses over people who have powers: he knows their power set, weaknesses, and maximums better than they probably do. He is the classic nerd: a bit portly with a pocket protector full of screwdrivers and a desire to help his company as much as he can...if only so that he can become their first client when they succeed.

    -------

For his powerset, I was thinking about having him be a Brick (super strength, super durability) or a Paragon (kinda superman like, but on a lesser scale), and taking the armor, infantry, and possibly airborne roles.

    -------

He is High-Spirited and Intellectual, and has studied academics, games, investigation, mechanics, scholar, science, and tactics.

Another great hero this will not be easy to eliminate people.

    Hero Points:0
    Defenses: D:+0 P:+0 F:+0 T:+0 W:+0 KB: -0
    Perception: +0
    Damage Condition:None
    Status Condition:None
    Fatigue Condition:None

Do you guys think this would be to bulky for descriptions at the top of your hero? (The Race and class level tags) I currently have them set so they each have their own line.

First time I'd seen someone link a Paizo based game over on the Ronin forums. I'm over there as 'Doctor Malsyn', which would've been this account's default profile too but... Shenanigans.

I don't have anything solid yet, but I have it in mind to play a different version of a teen hero I ran with Claremont Accademy. She'd essentially be a zombie, who's slowing turning into a skeleton- the only part of her that's technically 'alive' after the Storm hit.

@Watcher: No, that's not too bulky. However, it's fine to just use lines to space them, as follows:

    Hero Points: 0 | Defenses: D:+0 P:+0 F:+0 T:+0 W:+0 KB: -0 | Perception: +0 | Damage Condition: None | Status Condition: None | Fatigue Condition: None

What would you all prefer? Separated by lines or individual lines?

    Writing something to submit, but I can offer a comment as well. I've always been used to posting it as such;

    Hero Name
    Status Normal or -1, fatigued
    HP 1 | LP 1
    --------------

...But I've mostly done this on a forum rather then on Paizo. If I had to choose, the revised look seems cleaner.

This is what im thinking for how combat actions will be done please tell me your thoughts

    Combat Actions

After the description of your actions having all the dice rolls actions broken down along with them

    Example
The bowman pulls his bow and knocks his bladed arrow as he runs to the edge of the rooftop takes aim on Dr. Simian in his hover chair and lets his arrow fly.

    Bowman wrote:
Free Action to draw my bow Move Action to move to the edge of the roof, and Standard Action to fire. Attack Bladed Arrow (+11 (+15 base -4 Power Attack) Attack, DC 24 (DC 20 base, +4 for Power Attack) Toughness). Attack Check w/Bladed Arrow: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26

    Or

The bowman pulls his bow and knocks his Sleep arrow as he runs to the edge of the rooftop takes aim on group of Viper agents and lets his arrow fly.
    Bowman wrote:
Free Action to draw my bow Move Action to move to the edge of the roof, and Standard Action to fire. Attack Area Effect Burst Affliction 6 DC 16 Will Save or Afflicted Level 1 Dazed, Level 2 Stunned Level 3 Asleep

    Rolling for Skills and Powers

    Skill or Powers Name: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (11) + 14 = 25 Any modifier besides standard ranks in power or skill

    Personal Introduction:
*Ahem* Hey there! Despite what it says here, my screename is generally Doctor Malsyn. I tend to respond to Doc, Malsyn, or Mal when I'm posting online with friends. I'm usually here at home watching after my little brothers, so that gives me a bit more free time then I know what to do with. Role-playing helps me use up that time, stretches my creative muscles and helps to use up a far to overactive imagination. Plus, I love hanging out with new folks and weaving together a pretty cool story. Dosn't hurt when you also get to cut downsome imaginary bad guys too.

Regarding favored heroes, I'll be honest and say I've never really had a favorite. I've been watched and read all kinds of material. Teen Titans, Static Shock, Batman TAS/Beyond, The Authority, Green Lantern, etc. I just seem to enjoy the medium as a whole. There's just something awesome about watching people using weird abilities or clever tactics to thwart evil in all it's forms.

Which is exactly why the next natural step for me was to get into Superhero games! I want to live out those stories too, watch them unfold from my own perspective. Drama, triumph, and all. I've as such played the system for a few years now, actually starting with this board before I found the Ronin Forums. Never managed to play a game of it IRL or on a gaming service, but it's something I'd been hoping to do.

As I said, I've done PBP for a few years now. Mostly Pathfinder and M&M, but there have been some other niche games like Savage Worlds, Dragon Age, Star Wars, and other things. I've mostly been a player, but I have run a couple games in my time. Currently, I have an active M&M game on Ronin.

The last point about discord, I'm admittedly hesitant about just giving it out in the open. If you really need me too, I could link to it on here, but that's something I prefer to give via PM.

    The Guides:
I've followed most if not all of this stuff for awhile, at least in spirit if not by numbers. Reading the more in depth thought process of it all was very interesting though, and I found the comments on the 'push and the hook' pretty enlightening.

    Character Writeup:

    Role: P: Infrantry | S: Support
    Hero Type: P: Confident | S: Steady
    Build: Terrifying undead Martial Artist

Ginger Hearthway had always benefited from her family's wealth and status, especially when it came to academics. Enrolled in one of Emerald City's most prestigious private schools, she proudly considered herself top brass among her age group's elite. This would normally make people inclined to see her as some self-entitled ditz who didn't have to work for anything, but that's where she'd love to prove you wrong. Namely by shoving your face in the dirt while wearing a smile that just reeked of smug.

This was because as someone with her confidence and temperment, she was a natural at several martial arts. Particularly Judo, for the feeling of control as she sends someone tumbling into the ground. It's true that she's at a disadvantage due to her size, but she makes up for it by knowing just how to use the diference to her advantage.

On top of the several tournaments she parpiciated and ranked in, she's very sporty and athletic in a way that shows. Blessed with her natural good looks and charm, she's only managed to further refine herself into the bombshell of a woman she was bound to become.

    --------

Or should I saw, would have become. The powers and abilities I'm aiming her for, is that as a stormer she's essentially become an undead zombie. This also comes with the unfortunate fact that over time, she's destined to eventually become a skeleton. Classic undead immunities, and a form of immortality albeit at the cost of her humanity. Combined with her natural talent in martial arts, she's well set for an infantry role.

With her new natural terrifying nature, she could also have some dabbling in a support by cowing enemies with fear using her almost unatural aura of fright. Being the daughter of wealthy socialites, she'd also have assests and status to draw from when the team needs it.

Here she is now, while she still looks mostly pretty!

I would like if you all would find a piece of art for your normal and super hero ID

    I would suggest looking here:
    Phil Cho Art
    Mutants and Masterminds Pinterest

I expect you want us to also to submit character at some point, right? When that's so, what is our Power Level and Power Point distribution?

It will be power level 10 with 150 points.

If I remember right, the plan is to chat with each other on Discord once players are picked, and we can tweak builds there. .....I mean, I did sort of build and iterate Althea a few times until I found something I'm happy with, but still. XD

    Yes that is correct.

Hmmm, got it then. I suppose in that instance if it's truly a requirement:

    Discord:
    Doctor Malsyn #3720

We will also do most out of game discussions on discord as well maybe a tag when it’s your turn on discord

I've already got a basic idea of my build, too. But it's malleable.

These are some of the possible house rules im bouncing around let me know your thoughts

#1. Banned Advantage: Takedown 2 (must use a hero point to access this feat)

#2 Restricted Advantage: You are only allowed 5 total ranks of Luck and no more than 2 ranks of any specific form of Luck

#3 You now gain 3 skill points per 1 PP

#4 Healing power change The Base DC of healing is figured by how injured the target is.

    +1 DC Per Bruise
    +2 DC For Dazed
    +3 DC For Staggered
    +4 DC For Incapacitate
    +5 DC for Dying

Example: The healer is coming up to heal The victim who has 4 bruises and is Dying so the DC to start the healing would be DC 19 with each degree of success removing the subjects worst condition.

#5 The removal of the rule of one combat maneuver per attack. As the rule is currently written, It makes it so you cant team attack and power attack or accurate attack and disarm at the same time which I don't think makes a lot of sense.

#6 Impervious Defense the base attack rank before advantages or other modifiers must be able to penetrate the Impervious Defense

Hmm... only #3 and #6 are relevant to my planned build, and I like them. ^^

...Or maybe #4 applies, given that I'm a nurse. o_O Althea has really good nursing skills, though, so I'm fine with that sort of change.

#3 is one I've seen used very frequently, I've always thought it was to good benefit.
I could see the argument for #1, but I've never seen the advantage itself prove to be a problem. It's even better when it comes to PBP I think, as it helps to save time in combat.
For #2, the only time I see people with that much luck is when it's literally their power. Most people seem to keep things sensible. Ginger ian't planned as a luck hero though, so I could take it or leave it.
#4 makes an amount of sense to me, I'd be fine with the implenetation.
#5 sounds fun, though it could also leave to some overpowered combos.
Lastly, #6... I've never once seen anyone who liked how Impervious was done completely, but I don't see this version improving things much either.

#5 The original books don't say one way or another about how many maneuvers you can preform per attack. It was the Basic Hero Handbook who said this is one line of the entire book. I think they were trying to limit Power attack and All Out attacks but at the same time they messed up team attacks and all the other cool maneuvers.

I typically don’t use any house rules, but it won’t bother me. The only one that’ll affect my build is the skill rule and it’s too my benefit.

Edit: Missed #6. That’ll benefit my idea for the character, but could also hurt it a little. Oh well!

What are you guys thoughts about this rule from the game master guide

    Knockback
Super-powerful attacks can send opponents flying. A character failing a Damage resistance check by two or more degrees may be knocked back. The distance is based on the rank of the effect and the target’s mass and durability.
Take the Damage rank and subtract the target’s Toughness rank. Subtract the target’s Growth rank (if any). In addition, effects such as a Feature defined as extra weight or density should subtract its rank. Add the Strength modifier of a character with Shrinking (so +2 for a character with Shrinking 8, for example).

    Knockback = Damage - Toughness - modifiers

The target is knocked back that distance value. A result of –5 or less results in no knockback. –4 or –3 means the character falls prone in roughly the same spot (although a knockback distance of a few feet may matter if the character is standing on a ledge, for example). So a knockback result of 5 means the character is knocked back 900 feet! (distance value 5).
The character suffers additional damage equal to the knockback result or the Toughness of any obstacle (such as a wall), whichever is greater. The obstacle suffers damage equal to the original attack(which may damage or break it). If the character breaks through the obstacle, he keeps going the remainder of the knockback distance.
If the obstacle is another character, treat the result as a slam attack (see M&M Hero’s Handbook, page 198) doing damage equal to the original attack to both parties. The character ends up prone and must get back up normally. You can choose to inflict less than your attack’s maximum knockback (just like you can choose to do less than your attack’s maximum damage).

Example: Junkpile strikes Ultramarine with an enormous rusting fist resulting in two degrees of failure on her Damage resistance check. The armored avenger may suffer some knockback. Junkpile’s strike does Damage 16. Ultramarine has Toughness 12 and no other modifiers for size or immovability. So the knockback result is 4, sending Ultramarine flying 500 feet and striking a wall before she skids to a stop. The wall’s Toughness is 8, and it suffers Damage 16 (equal to the original attack). Ultramarine breaks through it and goes the remaining distance. She has to resist Damage 8 (the wall’s Toughness), which she does easily. She’s dazed and prone as Junkpile continues his rampage.
Ultramarine picks herself up, flies back to the scene, and blasts Junkpile with her blue-green laser using the Power Attack maneuver for +2 Damage and scores a critical hit! Her laser does Damage 10 damage, +2 for the Power Attack, +5 for the critical, or 17 total. Junkpile has Toughness 16. He also has Growth 4 for a total knockback modifier of –20 and a result of –3. If the blast dazes Junkpile, it will knock him prone (and drive him back a mere 3 feet (distance value –3) if that’s important). If it weren’t for the critical hit, the knockback result would be –8 and have no effect.

Seems fine to me. It's true that superheroes and super villains often toss each other around with a heavy hit, and I have no problem supporting that kind of game. XD

Would be pretty epic. I've usually seen Knockback done as an actual power- IE, like the one you'd fine in the Strength powers profile. It'd be fine if it was just an innate part of the game though.

    Greetings folks!

I found Virtue's recruitment thread on the Ronin Army boards and decided to dust off my Paizo account so I could apply as this looks like a game, and a GM< who has a long term plan in mind and I am definitely in this for the long haul!

    Question #1:
I'm Zen Gypsy, and I have been an avid role player for more years than I care to admit. Cut my teeth on D&D in the 80's and I've continued sporadically throughout my adult life. In the 90's I discovered the Hero System & Champions in particular ... the superhero genre grabbed me. I loved the hell out of that game and still have fond memories of it. M&M is, in many ways, Champions spiritual successor, crunchy but not so much as to be off putting to new players. I have a strong preference for 2E, if only for the slightly more unified Combat Stats, Attack & Defense, rather than Dexterity, Fighting, Dodge & Parry, but I can deal with either system and look forward to running with you all if I get accepted.

Favorite superhero, it depends on my mood, but almost invariably it swings between Superman & Captain America. They are both exemplars of what we should aspire to as mature, responsible human beings. I've heard so many people moan when I mention Superman, but in all honesty, no, it's not a power fantasy for me. Superman, to me, is a character about restraint, humanity and modesty. He has the strength to impose a new world order, but he chooses not to, not out of fear of repercussion, but simply because it wouldn't be the right thing to do. Captain America is similar in many ways, but a little more grounded. In one mix-match Marvel-DCU I ran, WWII Cap served with Johnathon Kent, and the pictures of Pa Kent & Steve Rogers around the house inspired Clark as a youth. Whereas upon being unfrozen, Superman's deeds helped ground Rogers, making him realize there were still old fashioned values and decency left in the world. My brother geeked out when I told him that little piece of head cannon.

As for PbP experience, I moved to Northern Ontario about seven years ago for work, and as such no longer have a table top crew, so I have perused boards and such to scratch the occasional RP urge. As for Discord, I find it useful for keeping in touch with other players to keep OOC threads free of clutter and day to day chat, while allowing you to nudge other players to post, or to clarify THEIR posts. My Discord tag is @Jander-Prime#6244.

    Question #2:
Not the first time I've read either, however it's Painlord's guide that stuck with me in PbP scenarios. Push the fiction, if you want to play a loner, ala Wolverine, fine, but don't brood and expect other players to come to you to inquire as to your sour mood. Make a condescending remark, put forth a plan, announce you're doing it your way, but storm out in a way that Kitty Pryde can follow you and the two you can infiltrate the Hellfire Club from the sewers while the rest of the team tries to talk their way into an invitation.

    Background:
Isaih Jacobs was born on the Red Lake Indian Reservation in Minnesota. During his youth he avoided the cycle of poverty, crime and addiction which afflicted many of the Red Lake band. Instead he concentrated on the weight room and the track, eventually garnering the interest of an accredited coach during a local meet. He then went on to compete in local, state and national events, eventually earning his IAAF status, allowing him to attempt to qualify for Tokyo in 2020.

Now my idea for his mutation is that it radically alters his lifepath, preventing him from attaining his Olympic goals. Causing him to resent them, so yes he may be a little sullen, and reject the idea of a heroic identity, because his powers robbed him of any sort of normal life. However, much like the Thing, unwanted power does not preclude someone from being a stalwart friend and teammate.

His powers will manifest as Insubstantial 3, basically a sentient field of Quantum energy. However, as stated in the Sidebar as a GM option, is he can assume a Corporeal form as a Sustained duration, which requires constant concentration to do so. Secondly, as a Quantum Field he will be absent Stamina & have full Immunity to Fortitude Effects. Offensively he can cause his energy form to discorporate, violent, ie. an Area Damage affect centered on him.

Eventually, through earned PP, he will learn more control over his abilities, but this is my initial concept as he learns to cope with his newfound powers. As for Role I see him adopting the role of Armor, Infantry & Specialist. Armor because he will typically be insubstantial and only be able to be affected by energy effects, so he can take a punch like nobodies business. Infantry because he won't have range on his explosion, just in your face, BOOM! And Specialist because he can phase through walls and infiltrate a villains complex rather easily.

As for what type of hero he is, I'd say Disciplined, as his powers *are* very destructive, and Steady, because he's beginning to grow into them, and overcome his resentment of those powers, trying to use them for good.

The above answers are pretty wordy, but I wanted to get my thoughts up quickly, I can work on a build, or we can discuss it over Discord. Funny thing is, as I started writing this up, I veered significantly from what Virtue & I first discussed, either way, it's an interesting character and I hope to get the opportunity to play him.

Let me know what you think, comments and suggestions welcomed, and I look forward to getting to know you all!

(To elaborate a bit on an earlier comment, I like having more skill points per PP because I think it encourages characters to invest more outside of their tools and powers. If skills are generally representative of who someone is as a person, it's easier to afford a more realistic character... and let's be honest here, how often do high skills present balance issues in this game? XD)

Technology at +20, with Inventor and a few Ranks of Quickness can wreck holy hell! Just sayin' ...

Another House rule I've seen is 1 free Social Advantage for each rank of Presence purchased, because of Presence's notorious inefficiency compared to just buying ranks of Intimidation, Manipulation or Bluff. Because with a 3r/PP system, 1 rank of Presence is 2PP, and gives you 1 Intimidation, Manipulation & Persuasion, however, were you to just purchase all three skills, it'd cost you 1 PP, so buying raw Presence you are shorting yourself PP's.

Heh, like I said, I cut my teeth on Champions, numbers, numbers, numbers, crunch, crunch, crunch!

Something I don't think i said in the first post but I would like you all to have non meta human identities that can be fleshed out during the game and can be used as complications. Not a requirement but something I think goes along way in developing and role playing a super hero.

Zen what would be considered social advantages?

It might be difficult for Ginger to live out a 'normal' life, with the way her body has been affected by the Storm. Yet, she's nothing if not bold and brash enough to hold her head high and push on. Even if she needs a bit more perfume then she used to...

I'm not really finding a good picture to represent what I had in mind for her 'hero' attire, as I've been picturing her using mummy-wraps and such to help complete her look. It's been awhile since I'd drawn, but I might try doing that again for her.

Things like: Animal Empathy, Attractive, various Benefits [Wealth, CEO, Military Rank], Connected, Contacts, Fascinate, Inspire, Leadership.

The above all make sense to me for a character with a high Presence.

    *Snickers*

Althea has plenty of non-superhero stuff to work with. Demands on her time from the hospital, the need to do research, and so on. Should I go ahead and update my plans to have 3 skill points/PP, or leave it as-is for now?

I would go ahead with the 3 skills per p/p

I was thinking there are things I do in my home game that I forgot to mention. First we advance in Power Level when it's right in the story not when you get enough PPs. The positive side of that is I am a little more giving with exp.

Second I use a modified first ed rule for villain points. I give each jobber 1 villain point every lieutenant villain gets 2 points and every master villain gets 3. And I create a pool depending on how many heroes we have. These are used as gm fiats when interacting with the villains it limits me from doing things multiple times and giving out the hero points to an extreme. I still do gm fiats to the story that gain you hero points. But there is benefits to you the players you start every "session" with two bonus hero points and you can gain an immediate hero point by giving me two villain points. I'm also as a gm fast and loose with hero points, for heroic actions and good role playing.

Works for me. Althea doesn't have any real weird, villain-dropping stuff (mind control, mucking with time, etc.), so I don't expect you'll need to use fiats against my actions very often. XD

Well they can also just be used if i roll a crap save against you and would lesson the fun of the combat.

Reminds me of Marvel Heroics' Doom Pool system, I can get behind it.

I've never actually seen a group advance in PL on PBP before in spite of how much I've played it, but I can look forward to seeing how you run things.

    Question 1:
Hey my name is Zane. Pretty Avid Role player. Started with 5 e and have now found my intermitent love with Mutants and Masterminds as I love Super heroes and Comic books in general.

Favorite character is easily Marvels Hercules, the Incredible hercules is probably my all time favorite reading material. If I had to pick something more modern Mark Waid's Avengers Kang War was pretty epic, story telling,

PBP experience is very limited I ran a game for a while on Rolegate. But it was a much simpler supers game called Super crew that was just d6s but I'am excited to give Mutants and Masterminds a try.

    Question 2:
I love the always push the narrative example in Painlords guide, As I've seen games get pretty stagnant, for Play by post games, without the GM always moving everyone forward. Also the tips are really good as well post something every day, Rule of Two excetera. The other one Doomed Heroes Guide had some big tips but the biggest take away was make what your posting entertaining to read and make sure you use that spell check.

    [spoiler=Question 3] Leo The Lion
So tell me if this is alright but I want to play a Lion that gets struck by the Silver Storm, and gains Sentience and a higher IQ. Being Raised in captivity Leo has gained a real trust and love for humans that carries on into his transformation and gaining a Higher intelligence. The Character Concept is essentially A Lion Knight with some minor Light spells like a paladin,

The problem is the characters receive their powers before the storm.

Hello, I am interested in the game and have a character idea in the works but I do have a question first. How long after the mutation event will the game start? Are we already going to be heroes or will we start as citizens discovering our abilities?
