Reputation and factions before this adventure Tolar has only represented Second Seekers Luwazi Elsebo and has 35 reputation with them. He has done a few favors for other factions. Anything you should know about Tolar?
Always a tough questions. I'll just go into lots of details under the theory that that even stuff you don't need to know might be useful to my allies.
Tolar is a heavily muscled Kasatha wearing Vesk Overplate 1 that looks like a walking advertisement for the band Abysshead.
He uses a Tactical Pike and a Screamer, Thunderstrike in combat. Often both at the same time.
Tolar is very young for a Kasatha and early in his Tempering he got into a bar fight and was tossed in the local jail. Luwazi Elsebo met him in his cell, Explained the wonderful adventures the Starfinders partake in, and asked if he would join. Being a bit naive and growing up doing little more then farming he was instantly hooked. The next day he was freed and he swore fealty to Elsebo at once. She humors this as he is an effective though not very bright agent.
Tolar is a Bombard Soldier who is equally proficient in nearly all weapons (Versatile Focus) but often prefers to get up close and personal in combat. (Step Up and Strike, Melee Striker)
Being a bit dim he often travels with either Mr. Noah Namay (Elite Hireling set 2) or Mr. Peabody (Elite Hireling set 1) to assist with his shortcomings.

anything I should know about your character:
The ratfolk (lets be honest, rat is what you're calling him) is short even by ysoki standards at 3 feet tall only if you count the ears. (They count dammit). His beady red eyes peer up at you from behind golden wire glasses that make them look even bigger than they are. Fluffy white fur holds more than a little fluff underneath. What makes him stand out though is that his arms have been transformed into wings, giving him a rather batlike appearance. He still bumps them into things.
Justin didn't plan for a life delving into the universes deeper mysteries. He worked as maintenance and childcare on the Master of Stars* . When most of his family vanished in the scoured stars incident he applied and was rejected three times for a field agent position.
But after getting launched out of an airlock on accident he claims to have met a being who showed him what the universe looks like while standing on the tangent to infinity. Oxygen deprivation loss or not, the new perspective has let him manipulate the fundamental forces of the universe. Mostly to heal or bolster allies. (Mechanically He's a high int moderate wisdom star shaman.)
This mission is personal to Justin. He has family in there. He's going to get them out.
Personal: Devolved Avian. Its why he looks like a giant bat.
Ally Field trainee: Kirkath can pop out of Justins Bag of holding to assist with a skill check at +3 or borrow the rivet gun in there to Supression fire at +5.
Social First contact step in: Justin has spent many hours cataloging wayfinder reports and has an uncanny sense of just when a first contact scenario will go sideways.
Faction: Second seeker.
*these have more overlap than you'd think...

anything I should know about your character:
I'm going to try to squeeze in one more live game with credit going to Reynold this week, so his XP and Fame/Reputation are not set in stone yet until I can confirm the Chronicle. Even if I can't get that game in, I plan to apply credit from my recent GMing of 1-13 to him, which will bring him up to level 5 (I'll update his sheets and subheader at that time, maybe with some fancy new toys from the Armory). I'm also GMing this special for GameDay VII, so I'll RP but take a back seat with respect to decision making, if that's cool with the GM and the group.
Reynold is a charming yet visibly insincere human with the telltale sunburnt skin of an Akitonian. He does his best to get by, but for lower-class Akitonians that invariably means doing things they're not proud of. Reynold served brief stints as a front man for a crime syndicate, a low-ranking officer in the Akitonian infantry, and various other odd jobs before finally booking passage to Absalom Station with the hope of catching his big break. He joined the Starfinder Society during their desperate recruitment phase, seeing it as a chance to establish himself as "legit." Thus far it's the most consistent job he's managed to hold down all his life.
Primary skill is Bluff, primary tactic is get 'em/clever attack combo, no Inspiring Boost, i.e. cannot heal Stamina Damage. Likely boons include: Second Seekers (Luwazi Elsebo) Champion (Faction), First Skirmish (Starship), Elite Hireling Access (Ally; +11 trained Computers, Engineering, and Physical Science), and Scoured Stars Memorial (Social). I also have a Venture-Lieutenant polo shirt for a Promotional Slot boon reroll (@GM, let me know if you want proof of it).
With the Elite Ally slotted, Reynold's starship role modifiers are: Captain (Bluff +15 with Expertise, Diplomacy +12, Intimidate +12, below modifiers for assist), Engineer (Engineering +11), Pilot (Piloting +10), Science Officer (Computers +11), Gunner (gunnery +7).

Final Second Seekers Reputation: 2
Corrected starship modifiers (not listed = no correction): Bluff +16 with expertise, Diplomacy +13, Intimidate +13, Piloting +11, gunnery +8
Stats should be all set now!

I don't think the game link has been posted yet so we may get the last players after it is,
Currently we don't seem to have any kind of healing. We already have a (non-healing) Envoy so maybe the Mystic pregen? Our Engineer seems to be a good pilot but the Operative would free him up for other positions.
Assuming we do space combat. I hear it is optional. Tolar fires the guns which is not complicated so I have no preference either way.
Oh and I got clarification from Thurston on how long it lasts so for this adventure Tolar will have a climb speed equal to his regular speed. (35)

The game link was posted on the spreadsheet, which is where players are expected to find it and check in.
I understand about waiting to see if a character is free. I have three characters I'm hoping finish their games in time. Can you please post as that character even if you're not sure, so I can do a little bit of looking over characters?

Justin is a mystic. Star shaman. so not a dedicated healer. In combat healing comes up every rarely, but he can mystic cure people up in a hurry by sacrificing his hitpoints.

Ah. I saw dataphiles and ratfolk and assumed engineer.
Hit point healing comes up rarely. Stamina healing comes up often. At my tables anyway.

The spreadsheet was a lil hard to find. I had to ask people on discord.

Speciest!!!!
Well he IS an engineer. Of the any sufficiently studied magic is science variety.
I've had people adventure with him for multiple games where he threw out magic missiles and hacked everything in sight go "wait.. what?" when they're down to two HP or puking their guts out and they get the mystic cure.
Hit point healing comes up rarely. Stamina healing comes up often. At my tables anyway.
Yeah, but everyone can do that... :)

Well I mean from having 1 or 2 envoys at the table. Closest I came to death, In battle anyway, was when both the soldiers were down, The Technomancer was out of spells, and one of the 2 Envoys killed the BBEG with a pistol.

anything I should know about your character: Grav fancies himself a pretty good pilot (Ace Pilot, +14 total). Ever since he was younger he dreamed about exploring beyond Absalom Station behind the controls of his own starship. The Starfinder Society gave him that chance and he hasn't looked back since.
He joined up with the Exo-Guardians when the Scoured Stars Incident claimed some of the most notable warriors and defenders of the Society. He has since proven to be an absolute terror on the battlefield, covering long distances and charging over difficult terrain (gore+charge attack) and past enemies (mobility) with ease to deliver devastating hits to rearward commanders and casters. Once he's closed in with his target he uses his sheer size and speed, he distracts them granting allies a bonus to shoot the target (coordinated Shot) and also making it harder for other adversaries to shoot him (Close Combat). Once engaged he'll pursue anyone too fearful to stand toe-to-toe with him in combat (step up and strike) and take advantage of their cowardice.
Grix "Grav" Gorrixas |
also, I apologize in advance if despite being a 5 year VC with a level 6 character I seem like a newb, since this is my first PbP game (the onyl way I'll get a chance to *play* the special instead of always running), so I might miss some of the pBp slang and terminology at first, so bear with me!
Spacefarer Redelia |
Understood, Grav. The big difference you will see is how we handle initiative. Rather than each person going in turn, anyone whose turn comes before the next enemy can post in whatever order. It's as if we all delay as needed.
Coul you please include your basic information in your header? Take a look at the other characters to see how to do this. If you need more explicit instructions, let me know.

Are there any boon recommendations for this one? There's that mysterious ship that tried to blow us up over an ice planet...
Captaining Diplomacy +9
Piloting +15
Engineering +18
Computers +19
Gunnin +10
Justin was made to fill in on starship combat, so he can go anywhere. While computers is his highest stat the role is kinda meh unless we have a glut in the gunner market.
Grix "Grav" Gorrixas |
OK, that should be a little better now, let me know if there's anything else you'd want in there. I have a few situational combat feats and bonuses that might be tougher to track in PbP, but I'll try to remind people using the OOC tags.
While he can't make AOOs with his main melee weapon (unwieldy) he still will use his headbutt strike for normal provokes and the step up and strike options. He tries to move and charge to diagonal threatening squares when possible to leave open shots for his allies with ranged weapons and will give them the +1 bonus from coordinated shot (which will work great with our Reynold's Get'em improvisations if we can focus on the same target)
How do we normally handle things like skill checks, attacks, etc in the message board? like in roll20 we'd have a command with a /roll is there anything like that for PbP or do we make our rolls physically and post the results?
Spacefarer Redelia |
{dice=attack}1d20+5{/dice} with the {} replaced with [] will do the following:
attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
The other command you want to know about right away is how to do the blue text for things like a brief out of character comment in gameplay. for that, we use [ooc}text[/ooc} again using ] rather than }.
Spacefarer Redelia |
OK, I need you guys to slot boons. If any of you have the boon First Skirmish from 1-13, On the Trail of History, that boon will provide a bonus in this special. There is starship combat, but it is optional. Not doing any starship combat will impact the boons at the end of the scenario.
Grix "Grav" Gorrixas |
I for one would prefer to do the starship combat if we can, especially if it'll have a unique outcome if we're successful. I'm probably not the *best* pilot by matter of skill bonus, but I do enjoy it the most since I do try to be cognizant of positioning so we can do our best to drill down other ships quickly
Reynold Malkin |
I like the starship combat encounters too. If it ever comes down to a choice, that would get my vote.

Tolar, I understand about the different time zone.
If you are just waking up recently, then it might be that if I can get off a post for you guys first thing in the morning here, it will be at a time where you can post in the evening. I'm in Eastern time in the US.
Tolar Buntu |
Actually you seem to match my normal schedule. It is just flipped for now. I'll try to adjust.
Grix "Grav" Gorrixas |
Yeah I'm not sure about the pacing either but for the next few weeks anyways I've got more time at work to check throughout the day. I'm actually having a blast so far since in a normal in person special we'd be so focused on just makign the rolls in the quick 5-10 minutes we're afforded that we don't have much time to really roleplay or get to know each other, so this is pretty great! I just don't want to leave anyone behind either though. I'm sure things will slow down a bit once we get into the combat rounds and everyone needs to act before we move on?
Spacefarer Redelia |
I tend to run really quick tables of the specials. If we've been waiting 24 hours for you to post, I will bot you. In general, I won't use any consumables or limited use items unless it's needed to save a character's life. In specials, I will sometimes bot someone earlier. If everyone but one player has posted and that player will be able to post again right afterwards, I may bot.
If I do bot your character, please feel free to post after me, giving flavor to the action. If you're not going to be able to post for a bit due to stuff going on in real life, please let me know and I'll bot you sooner to keep things moving.
When the group needs to make decisions, I wait until at least half the group (in this case 3 players) post, as long as no one has posted a disagreement.
Grix "Grav" Gorrixas |
ok cool, by "bot" I'm assuming you mean just picking an action for us to do that seems like a normal or beneficial option, same way as if you were running a pregen as a GM to fill in a 4th player.
since Derek Larsen had said days could really be like, 1 or 2 rounds of combat, does that sound normal? given that it's a special I know time can be of the essence in getting better results but I could see that being abused if everyone's on and we run through a combat that would realistically take 30 minutes at the table, but took us 8 hours of intermittent posts, but equaling 5 minutes of tracked time for the Overseer?
I'm totally cool with moving along if we're all on it, but I also don't want to leave anybody behind who's only available for a few posts per day! Either way I'm just happy to be here, so far this has been a ton of fun and I'm looking forward to the rest.
Oh, For things like combat I saw in the slide show PbP primer thing that they use maps dumped into google slides as a way of tracking things in combat, is that true? I think that would bridge the only missing piece of info I needed to wrap my head around of how this differs from roll20
Spacefarer Redelia |
Yep, I'll post a link to the maps soon; it will appear at the top of the page.
By bot, I do mean I'll act for you. I can either make an educated guess what you would do, or you can include instructions for me in your profile.
In terms of speed, that conversion from minutes to days is an average, and some groups go much faster and some go slower, and that's OK, because it all averages out. I'll keep an eye on things and try to make sure that those on different time schedules are not left out.

Rapid Team Extraction Protocol (R-TEP)
In order to help Starfinder agents get out of dangerous situations during mass missions, the Starfinder Society has devised a Rapid Team Extraction Protocol (R-TEP.) The goal for the R-TEP is to allow PCs to “jump forward” if they become stuck on a particular encounter while the rest of the scenario continues to move on.
R-TEP represents an option to opt out of an ongoing encounter using special communication channels to call a specialized transport ship. Activating the R-TEP does not take an action, but the transport doesn’t arrive until 1 round later, which means the PCs must survive for another round before they get out. When the ship arrives, the party is immediately removed from the encounter. Dead and unconscious characters (and any gear in the same square as the character) are also extracted—
and if dying are stabilized. The ongoing mission is aborted, and the Table GM doesn’t report a success to the Overseer GM, but the table may immediately start a new mission.
Admitting defeat and using the Society’s limited resources for extraction is stressful for the PCs, and as a result, each PC at the table must spend 1 Resolve Point when they activate the R-TEP. If a PC does not possess the necessary Resolve Points to afford this option, then another PC at the table must agree to spend an additional Resolve Point to cover them. If the PCs do not have enough RP amongst them to engage the R-TEP, then they must continue with the encounter.
During certain transitions, each table may use the R-TEP without the Resolve Point expenditure, provided that the extraction is declared immediately after the transition. I will inform you of this opportunity if it arises. There also may be a time when PCs across all tables are automatically extracted from their current missions. If this happens, there will not be any RP cost.
Tolar Buntu |
It's worrisome that one of the first things we are told about the mission is that there are multiple plans in place to try and save you if you are near death. I mean, I'm glad to hear those plans are in place but talk about lack of faith...
