Round 1 the little gnome moves up.
Know Nature 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18 to see if he knows what it is.
Round 2
He moves up again and will fire an acid splash at the creature
1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 - 4 = 18 RTA
1d3 ⇒ 2

Mao tries to shake off the mold as he moves towards the creature. He strikes it with his glowing fist.

Mao and Aurus join forces to slice the mushroom up into small pieces for the daily special at the exclusive Blakros Museum Cafe. Lukian desolves anything remaining on the floor in acid, telling everyone what he knows about shriekers and the tastiness of their meat. And Uldar saves the party from any additional ear ringing with a trippy tune.
Unfortunately, Lukian isn't able to slip past the brown mold without getting frostbite.
3d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 6) = 10
Lukian takes 10 points of non-lethal cold damage.
END COMBAT
The party may regroup, heal up, and further explore the room.
Please show me with a line anywhere else that you move in the room. And if you want to look around, roll some perception checks.
Be careful around that brown mold!

Aurus backtracks, takes his wand of CLW out of his backpack, and hands it to Uldar. "Ch-ch-charge p-p-please," he says, teeth chattering from the cold of the mold burst.

You are a paladin/bard, so you have two classes that allow you to activate the wand yourself without any problem at all!!

"Poor Aurus, I wish I brought a blanket. Does anyone have a blanket?"
She then pulls out her pathfinder notebook and writes down 'get blanket'.

”Blankets can also be useful for putting out fires, so make sure there’s one in your travel inventory!”

*facepalm* I keep forgetting about Aurus' new spell list. I'll just say I'm RPing the Int damage :)
Aurus heals himself: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
After Uldar shows Aurus how to use his own wand, Aurus gives a relieved sigh. "I didn't like that," he says a little petulantly. "Why's the brown goop so cold?"
With Uldar's input on how to defeat the mold, Aurus offers to give Lukian a ride on his shoulders if the gnome needs a better vantage point to zap the mold.

As it is on the paladin spell list as well, you’ve been able to activate CLW wands since character creation! ;-)

He will accept the paladin's offer though and get on his shoulders
I have never ridden a paladin or a bard before so I guess, if I have a bucket list I could cross those off, be brings his knees together to guide the half elf where he needs to go :)

![]() |

"Watch the knees," the half-elf says grumpily as he takes a knee to the ear. "And if I hear any gnome songs or comedic retellings about this in the lodge, I'll deny it and you'll be the next one to tussle with a crocodile."

Cloudia's head goes back and forth as she observes the easy banter.
I wish I could be as relaxed as they. Better mold that spiders or snakes though.
She scrambles forward to be with the others as she realizes she has been left behind and looks around.

Lukian gets out his Brown Mold Removal Kit and cleans up the worst of the fungal problems. Meanwhile, the party huddles back up and Aurus heals himself.
Claudia asks Mao to show her that parchment again. Recognizing the language as Osiriani, she's able to read the chicken scratch of the author!
It details that attaching the brain canister to the archway in the drawing is the key to opening something called the Gate of Beyond. It also says that destroying the canister while it is attached to the archway will destroy the Gate.
With all the mysteries about the Gate of Beyond in mind, the party considers that the only part of the basement they have yet to explore is the area to the east of the room they’re in the bottom of the Private Archives map
Lukian and Mao still have considerable damage—you may want to heal that up before we move on. As you continue to explore keep up those perception checks!

”Lukian, can you ray of frost the brown mold, that should kill it!”

![]() |

Aurus stands looking more and more skeptical as the party reads off the "Gate of Beyond" material. "That don't sound too friendly to me," says the half-elf. "And I'm sorry - did you say 'brain canister?' What in the gods' good names is that supposed to be?" He hefts the greatsword. "We'd better make tracks before we find something unpleasant."
Perception check to scan the room as we move out.

Cloudia recharges her spells.
"Why would anyone put a brain in a canister? This is a pretty weird place."

Mao tightens his grip on the trapdoor's handles and pulls with all his might. He grunts as he is unable to open the trapdoor. "It. Won't. Budge." He exhales as he loosens his grip and turns to his comrades. "Could someone please assist me with this trapdoor?"
Strength: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

“Ah, I’ve got a tool for that!”
Uldar takes a weird looking device out of his backpack and flicks a few levers and switches and it becomes a weird pullysystem/crowbar/jack.

Strength: 1d20 ⇒ 9

Assist, Strength, Aurus: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Assist, Strength, Lukian: 1d20 ⇒ 6
Assist, Any-Tool, Uldar: 1d20 ⇒ 15
The party gathers round the trap door, Mao gets his fingers underneath an edge, Uldar pulls out an expensive Swiss army knife with a thumb jack to pry it up even more, and then Lukian, Aurus, and Cloudia put their backs into it and lift up the trap door!
Revealing...
With the light from Cloudia's spear and Mao's fist, the party sees a circular, 10-foot diameter shaft that drops 40 feet from the archives to the level below. A narrow flight of stone steps spirals down along the shaft’s circumference, coated with slime and mold.
You may attempt to get down these stairs by whatever means you have at hand, including simply walking. Roll an Acrobatics check if you walk, a Climb check if you try to scale the coated with slime slick walls.
As a gentle reminder, some of you still have considerable non-lethal damage from the brown mold…

"Mao, can I have my rope back?"
Uldar uses the anytool fix the rope to the door and drops the other end down the hole.
He also taps his wand of CLW on Mao and Lukian.
CLW Mao: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
CLW Lukian: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
"Everyone good to go?"

![]() |

"Sure."
Is the rope knotted?

![]() |

![]() |

Uldar, I'm assuming you got that tool from a Chronicle, since it's not Core. Pretty handy and cool device, I must say.
Indeed!

![]() |

Cloudia eyes the rope dubiously and even more dubiously at the dangerous pathway down. "Do you think we could put knots in the rope? I'm OK at climbing, but that looks like a pretty long fall."
Her face brightens as she has an idea.
"Perhaps we could take turns being lowered? The last person to go should be someone who is a good climber."

![]() |

"I mean, I ain't no roof runner but I can hold a rope alright," Aurus says, stretching his arms to hold the ropes. "Unless you want me to fight anything down the hole? Kind of a lose-lose for me, I guess."

![]() |

Mao hands over the rope to Uldar and follows him down the hole.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20

![]() |

Uldar creates a nifty belay out of his any-tool, then makes his way down the stairs slowly. Nothing jumps him when he gets to the bottom, and he gives the all-clear. Mao goes next, more sure-footed. Cloudia and Lukian follow, securing themselves with the rope...and Aurus goes last.
The any-tool will need to stay up top with the rope attached. Unless Aurus wants to brave the stairs without support. Frankly, leaving your contraption there as an escape route is probably a good idea anyway.
The shaft deposits you in an alcove at the far end of an antechamber, free of the riotous growths of fungi and mold that choke the shaft and archives above. The simple, clean lines of the basement’s basalt walls give way here to a disturbing, organic style of architecture that makes it seem like you are walking through the gullet of some monstrous behemoth. At the far end of the hall, a large, ornate arch that looks disconcertingly like the beast’s toothed maw stands in the wall, covered by a heavy black curtain with sickly green light from the chamber beyond shining around the edges.
A plain iron box sits on the floor in the middle of the room.

![]() |

The gnome jumps up again on the paladin and kicks his knees on the side of his heads
Let's get down there pony he says looking for a carrot in his bag.

![]() |

"That's odd. Why is that box sitting there in the middle of the room like that? Was it misplaced or something?"

![]() |

"You call me pony again and I'm going bucking bronto on your tiny hide," Aurus says without much malice, climbing down the rope with the gnome hanging on.
Once on the ground, the sickly green light and iron box immediately have Aurus on edge. He edges to the front of the group, sword at the ready, mouth grimly set as he scans the periphery.
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12

![]() |

Cloudia also detects magic on the box, but without spellcraft she knows very little and murmurs, "It's MAGIC. Be careful, please."
She lingers behind the others, one hand on the rope nervously.
"Maybe we should just take it back and let the experts deal with it!"

Cloudia, I have a 3rd level celestial blooded sorcerer in another game, CORE, and he is really fun

![]() |

I expect her to become more fun as time goes on. A sorcerer is pretty pathetic at low level, whether core or classic. But a celestial blooded does not even have the lame attacks they give sorcerers at first level. The wand helps a lot, but she really is a one-trick pony at this time. Even so, I'm having fun anyway with her just being her.
