GM Choon |
The heavenly fire momentarily blinds everyone not ready for it... which is everyone. When the mini-cataclysm ends only the heartiest of demons are left standing. There are still a good number remaining of various types, but they are universally burnt and PISSED.
If you dive in feel free to choose a few CR 3-5 demon and creatively narrate how you slaughter their collective crispy behind.

Alu demon charges, into braced readied action

Demon At 7HP after DR
The heaven rained fire as his brother in arms channeled divine fury. Just as Godwyn had brought mercy and healing, Drystan brought fire and wrath.
From the fiery ruin came an Alu Demon. It was shapely female humanoid with dark hair, dark eyes, and a pair of small black horns just above her eyes. Small, black, leathery wings protruded from her shoulders, which she used to swoop over the hellknights as it went right for the source of the utter destruction which had decimated the ranks of its otherworldly kin. Godwyn braced himself, putting the end of his halberd in the ground and digging his feet in. The creature flew directly onto the weapon, impaling itself on the spear point. He lifted the halberd up, raising the demon further into the sky, before throwing it off and onto the ground.
Charge Hit: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 9 + 2 = 13
The demon picked itself up from the ground, bleeding profusely. It lashed out at the paladin, thought it failed to connect. Before it could even regain it’s footing...

...Godwyn chopped down at it with the blade of his halberd, splitting the demon’s head in twain. He then turned, readying himself to face any more that might come.

He turned just in time to see a muscular goat-headed demon come charging out of the flames with a sword which burned with unholy energy.
Demon Charge: 1d20 + 11 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 11 + 2 = 20
Godwyn lifted his shield to parry the blow, and...

-5 HP, demon dead. Boiling blood did 7 damage to Godwyn
...and swinging his halberd, lopped the demon’s head off. Boiling blood spurred out, splashing Godwyn. Even through his armor he could feel the flames burn him. Still, he held his ground.
Second CR5 demon killed. Godwyn is at 93/100 HP. He heals 3HP a round, so he will be at full HP in 3 rounds.
Lian Brook |
Lian spies a pair of wounded Schir demons, and cracks her knuckles, "Fire seems to work, so more would be in order!
BURNING ARC!"

Second target: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 1, 4) = 10

Ref save for half, 2nd, dc 24: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
The flames leap from her hands and curve into the first, burning the flesh off it's head before arcing over and piercing the torso of the second, enough to bring it down in it's wounded state.
"Burnt still works, yes?"
loc |
"It appears it is time for me to get creative." Loc will outstretch two hands towards a pile of corpses. He will force the smoke and death rising from the scorched bodies into the form of a humanoid clouded in ash and smoke. Two flames burn where it's eyes should be, flickering as a unseen winds blows at the ash.
Loc wil use a pale crown beckons to create a cinderghost. He will than have the incorporeal creature begin to assist in the defense as he sits back and watches.
Sir Drystan Goldenflame |
Drawing his bastard sword, Drystan feels a new power come over him, a new strength in his arms. He charges forward into the fray.
Since you said to creatively narrate, I take it we don't actually need to roll? I'll be using both of my Sword words. One constant, one takes the the rest of my effort for the moment:
Contempt of Distance: Your movement action can take you to any point in movement range, provided the path is unobstructed and there’s a target to hit at the end of the move. A hero could thus dash straight to a rooftop or balcony without navigating the physical route there. Foes too far away to reach in one round can be pursued over multiple rounds, but they must be attacked once reached. This pursuit can even extend into the air, supporting the hero until they defeat their enemy or choose to disengage, whereupon they land safely at a point below.
Shattering Hand: Commit Effort. Your melee damage rolls and Fray dice are always the maximum possible. You can destroy barriers as thick as five feet of stonework in front of you in one round’s action, smashing them with a blow or as part of your movement action. Magical substances may resist this power. For reference, with auto-maximized damage rolls, my +1 evil-outsider-bane bastard sword does 46 damage per swing against demons.
His initial charge brings him up against a pair of smoldering Schir demons. He cuts one down with his first swing, the next on his second. advancing past their bisected corpses, he is attacked by a badly burned Andrazku. The horned yeti-demon is no match for the paladin either, and falls headless to a single stroke of his blade.
GM Choon |
The Crusaders descend on what's left of the demon force and start taking them apart like the well trained demon butchers they are as Loc provides backup. The Maralictor barks orders and the Hellknights file out of the inner walls. They form a shield wall behind the Crusaders and make double sure things are dead.
As you approach the outer wall the ground starts trembling like an earthquake!
Everyone, Acrobatics DC 15 to keep your feet. Otherwise you are thrown to the ground.
Here it comes! The maralictor shouts. The trembling gets worse and worse until a huge worm with a tri-fold maw full of glistening teeth bursts from the ground! It rises at last thirty feet into the air before crashing through the wall like it was so many toothpicks! Shards of stone and debris go flying!
Anyone near the wall, DC 15 reflex for half of bludgeoning damage: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 6) = 12
The worm disappears into the ground and leaves no trace of its passing. The demons flood through the gaping hole like water from a dam! The Maralictor shouts an infernal battle cry that is echoed by her troops and the battle is joined anew!

Godwyn kept to his feet as the rocks fell around him. Already his wounds were healing and he was sure this would be no different.
Through the breach came an Schir demon, which charged straight at him, holding a halberd of its own.
Schir Charge: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 10 + 2 = 15
Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Godwyn parried the blow, and then...
Hit: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (12) + 15 = 27
Damage: 1d10 + 19 ⇒ (6) + 19 = 25
Hit: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
Damage: 1d10 + 19 ⇒ (9) + 19 = 28
...he nearly bisected it with two blows. Despite its magic protecting it from all things good, there was little it could do against the paladin’s might.
Was at 93 HP. Healed 3, took 6 damage. Down to 90/100
Sir Drystan Goldenflame |
Acrobatics: 1d20 - 4 ⇒ (17) - 4 = 13
Reflex: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30
When the ground trembles, Drystan is caught off guard and crashes to the ground, but that saves him from a greater beating as most of the rubble of the wall flies over his head. As he climbs to his feet, a short, furry humanoid with a flaming sword charges at him.
Attack: 1d20 + 11 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 11 + 2 = 20
As the Brimorak's blow glances off his armor, he laughs.
Attack: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (1) + 15 = 16
Damage: 46
Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26
Damage: 46
The first time he misses, prompting gales of laughter from the demon, but the second time he cuts it nearly in half.
No longer so mirthful, the creature vomits a spray of its own boiling blood at the paladin.
Boiling Blood: 5d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 3, 1, 3) = 15
As Drystan shakes off the scalding fluid, he says
Attack: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (18) + 15 = 33

Before anything else can approach, he swiftly touches the wounded areas, mostly healing the few injuries he'd sustained. Lay on Hands: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 5) = 10
Lian Brook |
Acro for Feet: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Ref for half: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Keeping her feet, and only minorly buffeted by the rocks, Lian tisks the incoming demons.
They really should wait their turn.... Touch of Green Restraint
Lian commits Effort and places her hands on the ground, and in a 50' radius around the hole, plants erupt forth to bind every demon in the area (save to move), though leaving Hellknights and other allies unaffected.
*Karen* |
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (2) + 12 = 14
Karen moves forward with the crusaders to help contain and destroy the demonic attackers.
Reflex Save: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12
Karen in thrown to the ground, Just in time to have a chunk of masonry slam into her.
loc |
acrobatics: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18
Loc will surprisingly stay on his feet as he comes up near the rear. He will take cover behind one of the hell knights in the back as the worm suddenly erupts from the ground. "Well I want one of those."
Loc will cast fly as the demons begin to swarm back in. Before he ascends towards the ceiling he will cast haste, granting it to his party, and the remainder of the spells target to the hell knights.
Ametist |
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26
Reflex: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (3) + 16 = 19
Ametist fights with some minor enemies, but he is really focusing on the giant worm. "I have to try to cath it next time it appears."
GM Choon |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
The demons in general are far too numerous for any two crusaders to handle, of course. But the ones they do handle, oh my. Dead just barely begins to describe their state.
The rest flow around them like a river around a rock until Liam acts! In one great spell hundreds of demons are caught in brand new vines and brambles! As they struggle to get free the ones behind them run over their comrades and the whole things becomes a macabre rolling flood of death via friendly stampeding hoof/claw/foot/tentacle!
The Hellknights advance up to the edge of the green spell and meet the flood head on! The entire scene soon looks like they're the thin edges of a pool holding back a ravenous flood. The Crusaders are now completely surrounded!
Loc's undead horror is also there doing a number on several lesser demons!
Next actions? You may take 2-3 rounds worth if you wish. We aren't in strict combat time right now. More like narrative combat.
And don't forget your fray dice. :)
Lian Brook |
Lian begins chanting and casting, and summons three Aurochs, one after another.
As the demons struggle against the plant binds, some of their weaker ones find their limbs snap and many of the Dretches even killed, and many have flesh flayed off as they try and pull free by the tightening plants.
The moment the third Auroch forms, she sends all three of them charging forward into the mass of demons, aiming to open a hole on their left and give them some breathing room by targeting a band of Brimorak, goat fiends with fire spewing from their weapons.
The beasts crash into the demons and over ranks of bound foes, crushing bound targets outright and killing over a half-dozen Brimorak, though in return attacks of opportunity rip into the hooved battering rams, flaming longswords felling all three.

Fray Dice: 1d8 ⇒ 61d8 ⇒ 31d8 ⇒ 1
I will keep repairing the wall, with my Fray dice smashing down anything that moves to attack me. I hope.
Sir Drystan Goldenflame |
Drystan moves through the throngs of vine-wrapped demons like a vengeful whirlwind, slicing through the strongest ones with his demon-bane blade, while sparing the weaker ones little more than an elbow or a stomp of his armored boots.
I'm still using my Sword word, all melee damage and fray ice are maximized. 44 damage twice a turn directed toward the stronger ones (+2 more if I take a Swift to study them, 12 more if I can arrange a flank and get my 2d6 sneak attack in), 8 damage one more time per turn for the weaklings.

Confident that Sir Drystan could handle the demonic champions trapped within, Godwyn fought his way to the center of the fighting. Then, once near the largest cluster of hellknights, he let loose a surge of healing energy. He was there to aid them in this fight, and he intended to keep as many alive as he could.
GM Choon |
Karen seals the breach and the demons inside are quickly slaughtered. Just like last time a rumble begins just a few seconds after the breach is sealed. The creature comes under absolutely withering assault! It's stome-like carapace is cracked, it's stabbed, dropped into a hole, and shot with scalding metal! To get out, you need to successfully escape the grapple or use a light or one-handed weapon to do 30hp of damage vs AC 15. You are also now holding your breath.
Godwyn Blaecwulf |
Swallowed whole, Godwyn felt the world go dark. He was inside the worm! His halberd tumbled away as he went down...and down...and down...he could feel the acid burn him as he landed in it's stomach. He would not survive long in there...
Acid Damage! Slashing Damage!: 5d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 4, 3, 1) + (2) = 20
As he stood up, crying out in pain as he did so, he thought back to his youth. Of how he had learned to use the blade. Of his training as a young nobleman, and then a squire, and finally a paladin. With a force of will, he summoned to him the longsword that he had trained with so long ago...

Swift action lay on hands: 4d6 + 10 ⇒ (6, 6, 6, 2) + 10 = 30

...and with a golden light infusing him, the acid fell away, leaving him whole again. Finally, his halberd and shield reappeared in his hands. Looking over the army, alone but unbowed, he thought to himself:
This is going to be a long day.
*Karen* |
I hate to be the bearer of bad news Godwyn, but you can't use a longsword if you are swallowed whole:
A swallowed creature can try to cut its way free with any light slashing or piercing weapon
Ametist |
I guess we can assume he summoned a short sword?
Ametist can't do much with Godwyn inside of the beast, but he stands ready in case the human managed to come out.
Since the worm is under the earth, Ametist will ready an action to go and try to pull Godwyn up to open air again if he pierces through, using his Earth Word powers.
GM Choon |
Godwin summons a small blade and expertly cuts his way free! Only to find himself underground. Amerist sences the exit and pulls him upward to the surface!
Meanwhile, the demons were not happy that the walls are in tact and they are piling up their dead against them in an attempt at making a ramp of their own bodies!
Lian Brook |
Godwyn, do you require defensive enchantments, or shall I save them for later? Lian asks her front-line companion, as she considers her own other, bigger options besides enchantments and similarly sorcery- she feels even their newfound, likely divine power has limits and doesn't want to waste it where it has only questionable effectiveness.
Ametist |
Also, is the worm dead, or still running around?
Godwyn Blaecwulf |
Shaking the gore off of him, Godwyn shook his head. ”I am unharmed. While I thank you, there are others who could likely use your aid more. Or you can save your power, for we might need it when the demon lords of this host commit themselves to this fight.”
Lian Brook |
Yes. Still, I must contribute somehow... and my magic reserves of other spells are by no means in threat of running low.
Seeing the demons piling on bodies, and naturally how that involves them concentrating on moving them towards a spot, she gestures, chants, and casts a spell on the rising slope of bodies to capture as many demons as possible and restrain them from their actions.

Having seemingly been lost in a trance, the gravity of the situation snaps Zorakir back into reality. His companions were being swarmed by demons and he stood there in a catatonic state.
