Dr Carter will, with some frustration, join the others on the boulders when it is clear that the boulders were not, in fact the hideout of the people we were trying to find.
when it becomes dark he pulls out his wand and calls a small flame to the tip, he then makes a small bowl of rocks to make a fire pit that will obscure the light at a distance, but allow those close to see the light and feel the warmth

When it gets too dark to see, Michael will light a torch.
Once it gets too much later than that, he'll head back to the cart. No sane person would be out this time of night. But then again... these aren't sane people...

"Might just be a bird. Or they might have seen us here. They'll probably be back this time tomorrow night, so we will need to come after then."
He picks up the now sleeping Calvin and carries him back to the cart, with a lit torch stuck in a special loop on his hat.

the planned ambush doesn't result in a success. Eventually, when you come back got the house, goodman is sitting in his study with a drink. He doesn't even say anything unless you come to him.

He falls into his strange trance and awakes the next morning.
He makes a heavy breakfast and prepares to search.

William makes breakfast for everybody, it consists of eggs, tea, and toast, the egg yolks are hard, and the toast is slightly burnt, but the food is perfectly serviceable "perhaps keep an ear out for gossip during the day as well" he says taking a sip of the caffeinated brew

Michael will look around town, as if a tourist would. He causally listens for people talking about odd happenings anywhere. He stops and listens if he hears anything, pretending to be interested in something nearby. This is how he found most of his jobs, and he has mastered the art.

not much is learned from the townsfolk. They don't seem to be worried as a whole.

Drake goes around town and buys a couple of things for combat, entertainment, his expeiments and studies. While he is doing this he listens for any more information on he's targets.
He buys a couple of note books, a few beaker, a book about a headhunter, and a sharping stone.

The doctor first goes to examine the boulders with the light of day to aid him in looking the place over, then he tries for the bar, he spends a rather small amount of coin on maintaining the facade that he's drinking as much as would be standard while he listens in on the usual mummer of the crowd.

"no, it wasn't a door in the traditional sense, I suppose I was unclear earlier, it was made of stone, and didn't appear to act on a hinge, likely there is an external mechanism, a lever or pull chain that actuates the door, which I believe we should search for"

with the doctor's help, they eventually find a small compartment hidden on the other side of the boulder. Inside there is a mesh of a grate covering a small lever. You can barley fit a finger through the grate, and it's too far in to pull with just your fingers.

Probably not the best idea to go into a random hidden tunnel.
Drake walks over to the door and looks down the tunnel.
True it would not be the first thing I have done that goes against my better judgment. I will go first.
He lights a torch and starts descending into the tunnel while casting mage armor.
Drake is surrounded that looks like it is infused with his robes then it fades.
