Heather spits a curse at the blue skinned author of the parties troubles and hurls a shock ray at him.

Before the Derro can act again, Jeorik unleashes a second arrow.

Point Blank Shot (with -2 penalty): (1d20+7=20)
Damage: (1d8+1=5)

Survivor's Salvation

The blow from Inigo's mace pushes the flying derro back toward Keliwyn who's able to spear him with his rapier. Momentarily pinned the derro is hit by Istas' spear and another of Jeorik's arrows. Heather's ray blasts into the wall beside the derro.

It's hard to tell in the shifting shadows, but it looks like the derro is picking lint off his robe and throwing it at you. The lint expands as it falls and suddenly there's a foul undead man in your midst, hammering Istas with rotting fists. That's followed quickly by a touch from the derro's wand on Inigo's shoulder. A paralyzing cold starts to spread down Inigo's arm and into his torso. The cleric of Azmodeus also gets a quick whiff of rotting flesh. The nauseating smell spreads quickly to affect those nearest him, Keliwyn and Istas.

Inigo DC 13 Fort save or be paralyzed for 3 rounds. I've assumed Istas and Keliwyn are closest to Inigo. The 3 of you make a DC 13 Fort save or be sickened (-2 to pretty much all rolls) for the three rounds. Jeorik and Heather hanging back for ranged attacks are not affected.

I'll also point out that if the lantern was lifted high, everyone would be able to see adequately.

Round 2.
Battle Map.

Ignore the furnishings shown on the map. A table is in D1-D2 A short bed in F1. A book shelf is in F4. In the shifting light and shadows you glimpse part of another body on the table. It's a human torso and arm. The arm occasionally flails blindly about.

Spot check dc 15:

Spoiler:
Shoanti tatoos on the torso's arm.

The zombie's ponderous blows miss the lithe preistess.

No dice on that one. Istas is probably too caught up in battle anyway.

CrimsonDM wrote:

Istas grits her teeth and snarls in frustration at the derro's tactics. For him to summon yet another walking dead so easily into their midst both perplexes and angers her tremendously.

"Bring down the derro!" she urges her companions, "I'll handle this one!" Before turning her attention to the zombie, she hurls her warclub at the levitating derro.

Ranged attack with hurled club... 1d20+3 = 18 to hit
Damage... 1d6+2 = 7 hp

She then draws her only remaining weapon -- her ceremonial dagger carried by all Pharasmen -- and squares off with the zombie. The blade glints in the dim light, but the priestess takes satisfaction in knowing she'll send yet another animate soul to its final rest in the Boneyard.

Male Elf Rogue 6

Fort 1d20=3

I'll hold off until I see the result of Istas' action.

Survivor's Salvation

Istas' club strikes the derro a glancing blow, drawing a curse from the small blueish one. "Urgathoa take you!"

Keliwyn has yet to post round 2.
Heather's ray staggers the zombie, but it continues to swing at Istas with murderous intent. Inigo flails with his mace, but the derro glides around the blow.

reread the ghoul touch spell description. Since Inigo made his save there is no sickening stench. No sickness penalties for Keliwyn, yet.

Istas moves swiftly to try and eliminate the zombie from the fight. Thankfully, Heather's lightning seems to have weakened it already, but the priestess worries the girl might be better served to direct her power at bringing down the derro before he can summon more walking dead into their midst.

"C'mon!" she snarls like a firepelt cougar, drawing the slow-moving undead into a ponderous swing that she can block with her shield. And then, sensing she has an opening, she presses the attack and rolls around his arm to slash with her Pharasmen dagger.

Attack... 1d20+3 = 17 to hit
Damage with Totem Spirit bonus vs. undead... 1d4+2+2 = 5 hp

Though the blade doesn't bite as deeply as Istas would like, at least her knowledge of anatomy and how to weaken the walking dead proves useful in fighting the zombie.

Male Elf Rogue 6

Round 2 action

Keliwyn spins and weaves, trying to strike at the derro again, but the distraction of the zombie proves too much, and he misses.

Attack 1d20=2+5=7, Damage 1d6=5+1=6

Round 3

Keliwyn slips around the derro, squarely putting Istas between himself and the zombie she is fighting, and refocuses his attack. As he moves, he feints and spins, hoping to thrust his blade into a vital spot.

Attack 1d20=10+5=15, 1d6=5+1=6

Survivor's Salvation

The zombie goes down between the combined assault of Heather and Istas. But the derro plucks more dust from his cloak and throws it toward the party. A skeleton clatters into shape above the zombie's remains.

Keliwyn keeps the derro dodging his rapier thrusts, but as Istas whirls to strike the zombie, the derro finds an opening to lunge at Istas' back. The flick of a wand and Istas feels an icy coldness begin to creep into her limbs.

FYI...I think Inigo still has a Round 3 action left.

Also: A Quick Rules Question

Spoiler:

Given her experience with undead, I'm assuming Istas probably knows that fighting a skeleton is best done with a bludgeoning weapon like her club rather than a dagger. Having thrown her club at the derro, is it possible for her to retrieve it? Or, failing that, can she strike at the skeleton with the pommel of her dagger as an improvised bludgeon instead?

Or, if that's not possible, what are the rules for a shield bash? Is Istas considered proficient with shield bashing...either as a result of Shield Proficiency as a cleric or due to her proficiency with the Shoanti klar? Or did we decide to change the klar to a different weapon? I can't remember, but I still have it listed on Istas' profile.

You are quite correct. Inigo missing with his mace was round 2. Sorry, Radavel. Go ahead and post for round 3 and 4.

** spoiler omitted **

You are in C2 or C3; the club is in B1. Seems reasonable that you can travel 15' roundtrip and pick up the club en route. Dagger pommel would be subject to improvised weapon rules (-4 on attack?) for lethal damage, or maybe as a damage bonus to unarmed subdual damage, but that wouldn't help against undead. You could also just channel energy it to death . Shield bash? Got to go check the rules.

Inigo swings his mace with diabolical earnestness against the derro.

Spoiler:
Just finalized my resignation today.

Survivor's Salvation

Round 3 catchup: Inigo's mace catches the derro squarely and smashes it into the wall.

Round 4 Jeorik and Inigo both miss.

The derro, frustrated by its ineffectiveness against the clerics, turns it's attack against Keliwyn, as it plucks another bit of lint from its robe and casts it farther. A goblin zombie expands out of the lint near Heather and Jeorik (D3).

Keliwyn, fort DC 13 save v. paralysis and making a stink

The skeleton slashes with bony claws, but can't penetrate Istas' armour.

I found the shield bash rules. It's treated as a martial weapon that deals bludgeoning damage. Istas would be considered non-proficient with it (despite her experience with the Shoanti klar), because clerics don't receive martial weapon proficiency as a class ability. So, she'd be -4 on attacks with a shield bash...the same as an improvised weapon with her dagger pommel. But no worries. I've got something else in mind for this round.

CrimsonDM wrote:

The priestess sheathes her dagger as she continues to hold back the skeleton. Her hand then clasps her holy symbol instead. "Bless my touch so it may unravel the foul magic animating these bones, my Lady!" Istas prays.

Spontaneously converting her last remaining inflict light wounds into a cure light wounds and then reaching out to touch the skeleton.

Melee touch attack with cure light wounds... 1d20+3 = 12 to hit
Damage from positive energy... 1d8+2 = 7 hp

Male Elf Rogue 6

In case I wasn't clear my previous post, Keliwyn is now at C1, alongside the derro almost opposite Inigo, and back-to-back with Istas.

Keliwyn continues to press the attack. Although the sudden coldness of the derro's touch fades before it can really build, it shakes the elf up enough that his attack becomes half-hearted, and misses.

If Keliwyn can combine his crappy attack with a reach under the flying derro to retrieve Istas' club, he will.

Bill, C1 check. And you can make that reach. I feel sorry for Keliwyn, really, really sorry. ;p

Istas reaches out toward the nascent skeleton and apparently with a mere touch shatters it into fragments.

Nice use of spontaneous clw, Neil. Of course I still have the goblin zombie positioned near Heather and Jeorik. It will act on initiative count 2.

Dramatically leaving her hand outstretched over the skeleton's pile of deanimated bones, the priestess of Pharasma glares up at the derro necromancer once more. "You're next," she tells him.

Wellard? Can you post Heather's round 4 action?

Istas scoops up the warclub, tapping it once against the flagstones as she prepares to attack again. Squeezing past Keliwyn, she urges the elf to aid Heather with the goblin zombie. And once she finds an opening, she moves in against the derro, eyes flashing while bashing away with her club.

Attack... 1d20+3 = 20 to hit

Jeorik's latest arrow hits the derro squarely. His face twists in rage and pain and he unleashes a string of what is probably profanity in an unrecognisable language. He flies up closer to the ceiling and flies through the party, heading for the passage by which you came in.

As he passes Istas' heavy clubhead smashing into his thigh, releasing more profanity.

Vicious, yes, tactical genius no. Everyone gets an AoO on the way out. Neil I took Istas' swing as hers since he acts before her.

Glad that he has already drawn his sword, Jeorik flicks out expertly at the Derro as he moves past.

Clearly, you don't understand the subtle nuances of the fate Pharasma had in store for him. ;-D

Istas retrieves her grandfather's spear from the derro's body, giving it a savage twist as she pulls it free.

"These vile creatures should know better than to put their faith in a goddess as twisted as Urgathoa," she flatly states.

The priestess looks around at her comrades. "Is everyone okay?" she asks, "Any serious injuries? Let's hold up here a moment and assure ourselves we've cleared this area of their complex. Then, we need to head back and check on Darthen."

As she passes Jeorik to check on the room's other exit, she gives him a brief compliment, "Nice work with those arrows."

Survivor's Salvation

Checking this room: The torso and arm on the table bear Shoanti tatoos. The shelves by the door contain some odds and ends, mostly bones and a couple skulls and an iron-bound spellbook.

Vreeg's body wears a closely-woven robe, a hexagonal brass ring, a vial of thick lavender liquid, and a dagger. His wand lies a short distance from the body.

Istas enters the second room. In this room is a large 4 poster bed, a chest with a few clothes cut for a large man, a full length mirror, and a small writing desk and chair.

Inigo warns against touching the iron bound spellbook, "That thing could have a ward on it."

Female Human (Shoanti) Cleric 6

Istas examines the writhing body more closely, her eyes narrowing at the sight of the Shoanti tattooes.

"It would appear our search for Gaekhen's body may take longer than expected," she announces, "This looks like a few pieces of it, but nothing fully intact."

Seeing that the arm continues to flail and grasp about, the priestess clasps her holy symbol and prays for Pharasma's help.

Channel positive energy... 1d6 = 5 hp
I'm assuming the area of effect is large enough to heal the entire party, as well. But Istas will use her active deathwatch ability to ensure Vreeg the derro has fully passed away first, so she doesn't revive him.

Once satisfied that whatever Urgathoan power animating the arm has been driven away, the priestess then gives thanks to the Lady of Bones and continues her exploration.

CrimsonDM wrote:

"This room isn't sized for a derro," Istas calls out, "It seems our necromancer, Rolth, may be a human instead...if you can call anyone experimenting with the bodies of the dead human, of course. He either fled or was already absent before we got here. 'Tis a pity, too. I would've liked nothing more than to send him to the Boneyard for judgement as well. But perhaps someone else is fated to cross paths with him and exact my Lady's vengeance upon him."

Survivor's Salvation

Under the power of the Lady of Graves, the arm ceases its spasmodic motion. The party healing is a nice bonus. The derro was really dead.

Male Human Fighter 3/ Paladin 2

"Thank you," says Jeorik simply and then, taking one last look to make sure there are no remaining enemies in the room, he helps examine the derro. Pulling the brass ring from the derro's finger, Jeorik hands it to Heather for examination. Then he takes a look at the vial of thick lavender liquid wondering, "Is this poison do you think, or something beneficial?"

Survivor's Salvation

After the exertions of combat, the party's sweat lies clammily on their skin. These underground chambers feel cold, not pleasantly cool, for the first time.

Spoiler:
Since I'm sure you'll check. The ring and the wand detect as magical, abjuration and necromancy respectively. Not real strong. (can't remember the magic scale, but we're talking 1st-3rd level spells here) After Istas' channels the torso, it is no longer magical at all.
