[pbp] Rise of the Runelords - Subplot (Behnin)

Game Master RyanH

There are times, sometimes days in Sandpoint where the party is off doing their own thing. Site seeing, resting, in Arandor's case incessant research. Shortly after the incident with Ameiko's father LonJiku is one of those times. You are sitting in the Rusty Dragon, enjoying a drink and amused by the antics of the drunkards in the bar.

Ameiko approaches you at your table and sits down. She has been quieter, less jovial, since her father was there and she looks a little haggard. Putting on her best smile she leans forward and says, "I saw you run after my father … I see you got the cold shoulder and am very sorry if my arguing with him interfered with your plans in any way. If I can be of any service, or can help I am here and anxious to make amends."

Thank you for your concerns. I have been trying to investigate the disappearance of my father Thorin, as you know. I have reached only dead ends and I believe your father may have some answers. My father was a great king and father. I will not fail in my quest to find out the truth of his disappearance. Anything you can do would be helpful and I would be in your debt.

She is not familiar with the name, but as you talk further, and you clarify the time period involved she states that it is her grandfather that would have had dealings with him, "... he was a good man ...", she notes. She says that she would not likely be able to get any information out of her father, but should would see what she can find out. Again, she apologizes for causing her fathers poor mood.

Excellent, if there is anything i can do to help , let me know.

Where and who is your grandfather? I would be honored to meet with humans hear tales of my father. If need be, I can seek him out

She is saddened to inform you that her grandfather passed away many years ago. Her dad is in charge of the estate. She does have some memorabilia of his, and he was master of the Kaijitsu manor before her father, so it's possible there are leads there. She will let you know what she finds out.

No sooner has Ameiko left your table than a beautiful young woman approaches. Bashfully she introduces herself as Shayliss Vinder, daughter of Ven Vinder of the general store. "My father has been too distracted with with my sister’s private life to keep up with the store’s pest problem! He keeps stuffing his nose in Katrine's issues and ignoring the fact that the store has rats … why, just yesterday, I saw one the size of a goblin hiding behind a barrel at the far end of the basement.", she looks at you, distraught, "My father doesn’t believe me, but I'm sure he knows ... he’s just more distracted by what Katrine might or might not be up to at the lumber mill. And since you're a new hero in town, well, I just thought maybe you could come back to the store with me to kill a few rats in the basement." She stresses that there’s not many rats, certainly not enough to warrant needing more than just you and that fine hammer.

I'm happy to help. Has the rat been eating provisions or just bring a general pest? Either way I will gladly get rid of it. And, sometimes where there is one rat there are many. If you don't take care of it that is. Lead on

Behnin walks with Shayliss from the Rusty Dragon, West to the Vinder's general store (see map, Rusty Dragon, 37, General Store 26). She asks about him and where he is from, she's quite impressed with Behnin's heritage, "…royalty!", she exclaims excitedly. She asks about his valiant deeds saving the town from the hordes of goblins and talks about how scared she was … she needed a hero that night!

Upon arriving at the store she leads Behnin down to the basement. Behnin scans the room looking for rats, Harbinger in his hand at the ready. As he's peering into the dark corners he almost fails to notice Shayliss taking off her bodice as she slides herself into an embrace, and starts to guide Behnin to a convenient cot that has been set up in the back of the room.

As tempting as your beauty is and as flattered as I am, a person of my standing must proceed into such relationships cautiously. I have more to think about than myself. Although a night of passion would quench our carnal desires, maybe we Should aim our sites on more of a relationship.... Then I quickly draw her near...

She does not seem to back down, "What better way to start a relationship m'lord …", Her soft lips brushing against his, whispering, "No one needs to know what we do here … our relationship can be handled delicately as befits a king after …", Behnin feels her pushing against him and towards the cot.

Allowing the night of passion to happen, Behnin only slightly resists being hesitant only because he does not fully know her. You never know who can be trusted in this world.

Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

… lying on the cot after the interlude, Shayliss and Behnin decide that they should not linger here in the basement. Behnin has mostly replaced any armor and clothing he had removed. Suddenly he is surprised by a man storming into the room from the steps.

Roaring in rage, "What is going on here?! What are you doing with my daughter?!", he raises his large and meaty fists threateningly as he advances.

I will defend myself if attacked, but would rather gather my belongings to leave while explaining that isr daughter was a willing participant and not innocent in the matter. She was in fact the aggressor...
If attacked, I will only defend myself as I leave.

Give me a Bluff, Diplomacy, or intimidate check (along with some convincing dialogue to go with it ...

[dice=Intimidate]1d20+2

"Your daughter seduced me into coming home with her. Her actions were her own. I fell to her wilds...not the other way around.
I warn you, if you wish to make this physical, I will not be held responsible for your injuries. I will, however, pay for your funeral costs if need be.

I don't think I did the dice thing right...lol

you need a [/dice] at the end

intimidate: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

He allows you to leave though he is extremely angry,"Do not threaten me. You think because you kill some goblins you can do as you wish?! Get out! And do not expect to shop at this store!"

As you are leaving, "I expect this of Katrine ... but you, Shayliss, how dare you ...". Shaylis replies, "Father, you know nothing about Katrine or I ...". And the argument continues.

You think it was probably worth it. It's been awhile.

I will keep this to myself if possible. No need to sully her name. I will return to the Inn

I am posting,

Don't forget DM guidance with Harbinger of Thorin

perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13

What did you say?

That night after the battle at Glassworks Behnin dreams of his father Thorin. You remember very little, just his warning, "Beware of the Quasit ... the Quasit could be your undoing ..."

Behnin feels this was more than just a dream. While he has a dreaded foreboding from the warning, he feelings oddly content, as if he had truly spoken with his father. It has been so long. He had forgotten how much he missed his dad.

Excited and amazed, Behnin praises Torag for this blessing in prayer. Behnin feels the recovery of his fathers hammer has brought upon this blessing and that further contact with Thorin must be focused through the hammer. From now on Behnin holds and uses the hammer as a token with his prayers and study. Surely this is a powerful relic indeed!

Behnin will try to organize the town guard to seal and guard the tunnels beneath the glassworks

Some men from the Garrison, as well as some of the now idle stone workers that had been working on the new cathedral are eager to help seal this entry point. Some questions though …

Does Benin want to inspect the tunnel before blocking it?
Is he going to have it blocked permanently or add a gate/door to it?
If the group goes into the tunnel (or elsewhere), when are you going to do that?

Behnin gets four guards stationed at the head of the tunnel this first evening. While the group is discussing these considerations that evening at the Rusty Dragon, Behnin sees Shayliss come in with a couple friends. She sits across the room from him, but she makes eye contact a few times and gestures with her head towards the stairs leading up to the rooms.

I want the area sealed with iron gate so we can enter but nothing can escape. Also with guards posted

Behnin follows shayliss upstairs. He wants to understand what the situation between them is....

In the morning they will begin work sealing the tunnels and making a gate. Behnin should determine with the rest of his party when they will go back in.

Shayliss talks excitedly with Behnin about his brave adventures and recent battle (she's already heard rumors.). She's looking for some action. Her dad is angry with her, but he won't be showing up at the Rusty Dragon.

Behnin will bring her to his room. He will allow the advances, but will try to figure out her idea of this relationship...afterwards (pullout)

lol.

Behnin can't tell. It's alot like the last time, without all the yelling. She does not stay long and says she is heading back down to her friends. She thanks you and gives you a peck good by, "Until the next time m'lord."

Whether or not Behnin stays in his room or spends more time in the tavern, the next morning a couple of the town guards ask for him to accompany them to Junkers Cliff. There have been reports of activity there, and Frederick, who has been in charge is off on another task. They would just like someone with some seeming authority to come with them. They seem to lack confidence, but seem otherwise trustworthy and loyal.

Behnin accompanies the guard to Junkers Cliff

The guards state that someone came to them to report that they saw a goblin, or something on the beach from up on the cliff. They talked about something "too gruesome" to describe.

When the group arrives at the cliff they look down see a horrible site. The torso of a goblin is on the beach, entrails dragging behind it as it drags itself across the sand.

Initiative, and, go to Roll20 … log in using the RyanHHiller account (not the yahoo one). You should be on the beach map. And you should be able to move the characters. You may state what your group does (and move if necessary), the goblin does not see you.

We advance to the bloody mangled Goblin
We will advance and check out his wounds and the area

My initiative roll was 15

You may move your tokens to where you want to be … the goblin is slowly dragging it's half-body forward and has not noticed you.

We advance to the goblin and grapple it in an effort to question the creature as to what has happened to it

DM Stuff:

Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
Stealth: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
initiative 1: 1d20 - 5 ⇒ (2) - 5 = -3
initiative 2: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
initiative Soldiers: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12

Behnin approaches the goblin that is agonizingly dragging itself across the beach with entrails dragging behind it through the sand. He is considering how best to grapple the beast without getting its innards all over himself when he hears the whimpering of something just up the beach towards the cliff.

Gazing from the bright sand to into a darkened recess he sees at least two more small creatures ... more goblins!

Map is up on the map site ... log in as ryanhhiller at gmail (not the ryan_hiller yahoo one)

It's your move ... I have learned that in the first round, you are flat footed until the first time you act.
