"Arse, mate! You wanna walk on his arse!"

I think we're just waiting on Sleepy and maybe Grumble.

By the way, I rolled saves vs. dragon fear for all of you. Elmora, Tialla and one of the avorals are shaken for 14 rounds.

The dragon shakes off the paralyzing dweomer, and the jarl and his mount escape some of the fury of the blast of divine fire, although the jarl looks far from happy about the turn of events. (Giant -57 hp, Dragon -22 hp)

Male Dwarf Fighter 20

Grumble grumbles about his wings...and the throws his hand axe at the giant.

Elmora will also command the Avorals to use their magic missiles to strike every image of the dragon.

Mirror Image doesn't work that way in Pathfinder:

"Spells and effects that do not require an attack roll affect you normally and do not destroy any of your figments."

Cool, then they can just pelt the dragon with the magic missiles.

Is it the next round or are we still waiting on someone?

I was waiting for Sleepy, but I'll move on with the NPCs actions tonight.

Rest of round 5:
Grumble misses with his hand axe (natural 1 = 32 total) and Tialla sneaks up to the dragon. The white wyrm hisses: "Hide all you want, human, but sooner or later you will need to show your face..."

Sleepy does a fancy kip-up and races towards the dragon as do the avorals, who fire a barrage of empowered magic missiles. One set of missiles fizzles against the wyrm's hide, but one does some damage (-22 dmg to dragon).

Now the dragon's eyes narrow as it chooses its next target. "You, elf-witch!" it snarls, "you tried to paralyze me!" (note: I forgot that dragons are immune to paralysis, and so did Elmora...) "You will pay first!"

The dragon deftly swoops over and attempts to grab her in its deadly maw.

Spoiler:
(43 = success, dmg 14 nonlethal) Her ribs are crushed by the dragon's molars, but her skin is not pierced.

The giant hollers a war whoop and brings his axe crashing down in a wildly aimed blow.

(HOLY SPIT! I rolled a natural 20 on his power attack plus a natural 20 for the confirmation; that's 165 damage!!)

Elmora's body is sheared neatly in two, and her torso goes crashing to the floor...

Did I miss anything that might save her life? You can see the die rolls here if you don't believe me: http://hwx.it/wizards.com/dice.php?sid=2830

Hang on...I missed her Greater Invisibility.

The dragon misses due to the elf's invisibility, as does the frost giant. See the spoiler block for an alternate reality where Elmora got sliced in half by a power attack greataxe critical!!!

Oi...that would have been crazy...

wait, dragons are immune to paralysis? I need to run more dragons! I totally forgot that.

(I would have lived from that attack tho...+6 Con from Giant Form 2 = 45 HP, aid from Avorals, 13 temp HP....Unless I failed a Fort save for massive damage.)

Time to remove the dragon

Feeblemind

Spell Penetration 1d20+18=33

Edit:Changed my mind about what spell to cast

Male Dwarf Fighter 20

If the dragon is low to the ground, Grumble will move close and attempt to leap up and attack it.

Acrobatics: 1d20+23=24 wooo a 1...well 6 ft vertical leap, 10 foot reach.

Elmora, Elven Summoner wrote:

I think I need to list all the buffs. From my count, you have Greater Invisibility and Mass Enlarge Person running. You spent your other actions casting Summon Monster, Hold Monster, and activating your armor of flight. Remember -- you couldn't cast Shapechange.

The avorals cast See Invisibility on their first turn of existence.

"Damnable fiends! Take that again!"

Bartimus wields the rod and casts another FLAMESTRIKE MAXIMUS!

Damage = 90, half fire and half holy butt-kickin'! Reflex DC 21 for half.

SR= 1d20+22=24

Aimed at the Giant, of course, for maximum nasty! And then Bart will move 30 feet closer to the evil pair!

Grumble Grog wrote:

That's a good question, actually - what is the dragon's elevation at the moment?

The ceiling is 50' high and the dragon is trying to stay as high as possible, so it's 35' off the ground (ideally). However, it just attacked Elmora, so it's at most 10' higher than whatever elevation she's at.

I thought I had also ordered them to cast aid on those around, not sure if they would have gotten to it.

Wow I totally did stuff in my mind that didn't get on the board...LoL

OK so here's the reality of it.
Round 0 (prep rnd) greater invis
Round 1 greater heroism on Grumpy
Round 2 Summon Monster (Avorals cast see invis, even though they have true seeing as a SQ...)
Round 3 mass enlarge (Avorals sit around with thumb up their tails)
Round 4 activate armor/fly (Avorals follow)
Round 5 hold monster (Avorals cast magic missile)
Round 6 feeblemind (Avorals cast magic missile again, at the giant now.)

So, no giant form for her, it was all in my mind. As was the Aid, which I thought I ordered after the see invis debacle.

Sleepy had a good system last round, I think I'm going to have to implement a system like that myself when I DM my parties at upper level. Although, I was thinking of making a character sheet that had places on it for sliding paper clips like the old deadlands sheets did, but these would be STR/DEX etc sliders, to keep better track of effect on the character sheet.

I've also come to the conclusion that summoners suck at upper levels. (especially since I gave up evocation spells to be a conjurer...)

So even being 9ft tall, with a 6 ft leap and 10 ft reach, Grumble still misses by 10ft.

"DRAGGGGOONNNN!!!"

"I'm gonna rip off your wings to make my new cloak dragon!!!"

I think anytime you have to rely on other creatures to do damage at higher levels, it's going to suck. Because that CR 12 creature you can summon isn't going to hold a candle to the CR 20 creature you're fighting, not even if you summon four of them. Maybe the conjurer needs a prestige class to supplement his conjuring?

Or a line of Feats that build off of Augmented Summoning, Perhaps one that increases the HD of the summoned creatures.

Spoiler:

Feat: Augmented Summoning II
pre-req: Augmented Summoning, ability to cast summon monster V
effect: Increase the HD of the summoned creatures by 2. Increase STR/CON bonuses to +6.This only works on a single summoned creature, if you summon multiple creatures they are affected by Augment summoning I(This would give them another feat and an additional to hit, also increasing their DC.)

Feat Augment Summoning III
pre-req: Augment Summoning II, ability to cast summon monster IX
effect: Increase the HD of the summoned creatures by 4. Increase STR/CON bonuses to +8. This only works on a single summoned creature, if you summon multiple creatures they are affected by Augment summoning II

** spoiler omitted **

That would be neat, but I wonder at the bookkeeping you'd need for that. Maybe if you always summoned the same creature, or maybe a variant where you sacrifice breadth of summoning choices for a slightly more powerful summoned creature? I don't know, needs some beefing up though.

No more book keeping than Augment Summoning, basically you prepare before the game, you know what you can summon, a good player WILL have their stuff ready before the game. As Summoning spells can REALLY slow the game down.

They still work for flankers (hint hint).

Another question - when do I stop getting the bonuses from being invisible when I attack? After my first attack, or could I actually unload an entire full sneak sequence with a 5 ft step?

I would say after the first attack you're visible, but it's not clear.

hogarth wrote:

That would be my assumption as well, but it's also not clear to me. Since there's time to take a 5 ft step between attacks, though, there's also time for the victim to realize something is going on, I would think.

Maybe I missed it, but did we get an action for Tialla? Is she attacking?

hogarth wrote:

Sorry. I'm just about to watch my cloak get shredded, and I'm not happy about it. (sigh)

Tialla flickers into existence right behind the dragon, wielding her shortsword with terrible effectiveness.

Move action: put away wand.
Free action: draw off-hand weapon.
5 ft step to get next to dragon.
Standard action: Crippling bleeding sneak attack - invisible bonus cancels shaken penalty (1d20+31=49, damage 1d4+13=16, sneak attack 9d6=30)
Assuming that hits, dragon also loses 9 hp every turn on its action until it is healed and takes 2 points of Strength damage.

Male Dwarf Fighter 20

OOOOO he's gonna be mad at you!! say good bye to your little cloak! heh...nice bleed attack btw! Now would be the time to break out one of those Book of Iron Might maneuvers and attack his flight abilities..oh well.

what's the penalty for throwing a non-throwing weapon? -4?

Elmora casts Feeblemind, but the great drake shakes off the spell with ease (natural 20...). Tialla flies up and stabs at the dragon, but just ends up destroying a mirror image. Grumble takes a flying leap at the dragon, but he can't quite jump high enough.

However, Bartimus unleashes another devastating blast of flame (!@#$ metamagic rods...). The giant and the dragon again avoid the brunt of the damage, but they are both beginning to look a little crispy (giant has taken 114 dmg so far, dragon has taken 111 dmg).

Sleepy the monk flies up and tries a quivering palm on the giant. It hurts him a bit (136 dmg so far), but the quivering doesn`t bother him at all.

The two avorals fire off empowered Magic Missiles again, and both strike the dragon painfully (132 dmg so far).

The jarl lets out a war whoop and slashes at Tialla`s cape (50 vs. DC .. = destroyed) and she goes plummeting to the ground. He aims the rest of his attacks at the invisible Elmora and hits twice (36 + 33 = 69 damage).

The dragon roars and waves its claws around in a frightful display of power (dazzling display, Intimidate result 61)! Elmora and Tialla are shaken for 7 rounds and Sleepy is shaken for 6 rounds. In fact, since Elmora and Tialla have been shaken twice, they are frightened and they run away for the next 7 rounds. :-)

The dragon roars: `YOU ARE NEXT, FALSE PRIEST!!`

map: Current map, round 6

Tialla just fell 35 ft to the ground, didn't she? Doesn't that put her outside the range of Dazzling Display?

hogarth wrote:

The Map's not showing up for me... DOh!

Tialla Cloudstep wrote:

Oh, then reverse the order of those two actions, then (Dazzling Display first, then giant's full attack).

I'm not sure what's up with the map server; I may have to recreate the map (although all of the co-ordinates should be in the URL).

Bartimus moves 30 ft closer and casts Energy Drain:

SR:1d20+22=29
Ranged Touch Attack and Damage: 1d20+19=33, 2d4=7

Whoo hoo!

"Proud words from a glorified horse!"

Oh...you have True Seeing going too, you nasty fellow -- no mirror image confusion for you. But you're way too far away to cast Energy Drain, though (the range is only 70 ft).

hogarth wrote:

Ah crap! The perils of having a defunct map. Well, mind if I keep those rolls for later and switch tactics? And how far away am I from the wee beastie and rider?

Here's an old map.

Since then, the dragon has moved right next to Elmora, and Tialla, Sleepy and Grumble have moved next to the dragon. I also moved Bartimus and the avorals so that they could gain line of sight to the dragon, but that's about it.

EDIT: Runs like a little girl...frightened for 7 rounds...

Male Dwarf Fighter 20

Grumble in a fit or frustration throws his axe, then the returning axe at the dragon.

HAHA.

1d20=3, 1d20=2

Those are the raw rolls...so 40+2=42 -range -penalty for throwing the Dwarven War Axe

Returning axe 35+3=38-range.

Elmora, Elven Summoner wrote:
Elmora casts solid fog centered on the the dragon and rider.

No, Elmora runs like a frightened little girl for 7 rounds. :-)

Dazzling display, nasty...well there goes the solid fog/incendiary cloud I was gonna set-up.

The avorals continue their magic missiling the dragon I would assume...will they follow me so I won't get outta their range?

Bartimus will move 30 feet closer to the dragon and cast FIRESTORM!

Reflex DC 24, the cubes of fire will cover the dragon and rider and any remaining will be used upward to burn above them.

SR: 1d20+22=28
Damage: 18d6=81

"Burn, you darned white horse!"

How many bloody fire spells do you have!?

hogarth wrote:

My bloody fire spells are a special treat! 1d8 damage/level bloody fire damage! And a reflex save to avoid slipping in the blood and gore...

Seriously, most of the spells that Clerics get that do damage, are fire spells. Gods forbit that Bart ever needs to kill a fire elemental!

*EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE* '

says Elmora as she flees at full speed away from the dragon...

"ohmuhgawd, ohmuhgawd, ohmuhgawd..." leaving a yellow trail in her wake

Did we crap out here?

Sorry, I'm (a) lazy and (b) waiting for Tialla.

Tialla, are you out there?

Woops, I forgot to actually post the "I spend 7 rounds running away" post. My bad.

Tialla flees the cavern, flickering into invisibility as she goes.

Just to clarify -- you only need to flee when the dragon is within sight. Once you are out of sight, you can do whatever you like (although you're still shaken).
