January 5th, 9:00 PM, Cairo, Egypt, the villa of Venetian explorer and wizard Niccolò de' Conti:

Finishing a late supper after a long day of recording accounts of his travels throughout India, China, Mesopotamia, and North Africa in one of his several travel journals, de' Conti is suddenly jolted to attention by a magical alarm spell triggered to ring in his mind if his family home in Venice were ever threatened by fire or other catastrophe...

A fire at the Palazzo de' Conti!? I will go there at once to see what can be done...

Rising from the table where he had been dining alone, the explorer-wizard checks to make sure his decanter of endless water is in place on his harness, then utters the incantation to teleport from Cairo to a seastack in the Mediterranean midway between Egypt and Italy, and from there on to Venice, where he is horrified to find the City of Bridges on fire in several places, and the great fire dragon Wormwood hovering several hundred feet above the Cathedral of San Lorenzo!

He makes the sign of the cross and casts a spell to allow him to fly, soaring up above the rooftops, but keeping the tower of a Palazzo between the dragon and himself as concealment...

Flying closer in spite of the growing dread that grips him the closer he gets to the great red dragon, de' Conti peers from around the side of the palace tower at the crimson winged nightmare hovering above the Cathedral and belching flames at the slate shingled roof!

After what seems like an eternity, he sees a ghostly figure rise up through the roof of the Cathedral, which he identifies as the Ghost of Marco Polo, his boyhood hero! An exclamation of exaltation escapes his awed lips! It is the Ghost of Marco Polo, rebuking the dragon in its native tongue! And now he leads the beast on a merry chase to the south!

HAHAHA!! BRAVO, MARCO POLO!! BRAVO!! HAHA!!

Turning to the others he observes, "Now that we have stopped these tow brigands the ship is safe. Do we continue to Sefi or turn back toward Marrakech?"

Nodding to Shaka, Wulfgar finishes stripping the captain, then cutting off his arms and legs, tosses them near the tiger. Collapsing to his knees, Volreg chuckles lazily. "I am surprised that worked! Oh boy, that was scary! At least he won't be causing any more trouble," Getting to his feet, and brushing the sand off his legs, looks at the others before looking in the directions where the others were. "Perhaps we should still get them to the boat. It may be safer, in case they need to get away, the crew knows how to sail." Hearing the tiger's words, he smiles. Hey, brothers! Hear that? This kindly gentleman is serving us breakfast! He only wants to have a little chat in return... What say you, brothers? Can we trust him?

What if it’s a trick to lure us down there and let their tiger gobble us all up!? Did you think of that, my bird-brained brother?

Quiet, you carrion-heads! Don’t give him any ideas... Let’s just have a little taste of the breakfast he offers and hear what he has to say from a respectable distance, right?

The three vultures drift down in a spiral until they land about thirty paces from Wulfgar and the proffered limbs of Captain Barak and the Tengu...

Wulfgar chuckles at the carrion-bird's antics, He shakes his head, "Fear not brothers, I am Wulfgar Ivarsson and I would feed my horse to Shaka before I would bait you here as food. I believe you sentient creatures are too rare and valuable to waste. I simply wanted to properly introduce myself and find out if you would be interested, now or in the future, in a mutually beneficial relationship. We may need aerial reconnaissance and you my brothers, appear to desire an easy meal. Since death follows in our wake, we might be able to come to an agreement."

not that it matters, but Wulfgar cut off the limbs for Shaka, he was feeding the torso to the vultures, that way they can enjoy the entrails...

"We wouldn't try to kill you. Though I loathe to admit it you serve Mother Africa by cleaning the remains of the dead. You are vital to her very life." She says with a smile before she looks at Volreg.

"I agree we should head back to the SHip and try to figure out who we can train and plan our attacks accordingly."

Do you hear that brothers? We are a vital part of the Circle of Life! Very important persons, as it were!

Well of course we are, brother! I knew that much!

Ooh! The guts are intact! I love it when I get to pull out the guts! Dibs on the man-ape’s guts! You cannibals can eat the Tengu’s guts! Har har harrrr!

After breaking fast on the guts of the slavers, the vultures are inclined to agree to Wulfgar’s proposal of working as aerial reconnaissance in trade for a steady supply of carrion to eat...

Yes, we brothers will keep eyes out for the Desert Jackals, and clean up their messes to boot, shan’t we brothers?

Damn straight!

Hell yuss!

'Never hurts to have friends.' Wulfgar smiles "Good, then we have an accord, you tell us what you see and we let you eat what we kill." He nods toward Shaka, "Of course our tiger get's to eat his own kill, but I'll wager even he may leave some left over from time to time. So what should we call you boys?"

When his discussion with the brothers is over, he remounts his stallion and asks the others, "Shall we head to Safi? We shall speak with our crew and possibly the monks there. We may be able to talk them into joining us. We just have to think up a plan." He then turns his horse west, and continues on the road to Safi.
