An open-air terrace looks out from the northwest side of the citadel, its interior shattered and broken. A pile of treasure lies gathered in the southeast corner, while a narrow band of stairs is half-seen just above the nearby rubble choking its entrance

Kevin looks at the pile of treasure in disbelief. "Let's head on up and make sure no one is there, then we can take our time in searching on the way down." I've never seen that much money in my life. Did we stumble onto a dragon's lair? We're in no shape to take on one of those.


You head to the top of the tower.

The tower’s open rooftop seems to have once featured a gold- and-ivory inlay of a conjuration circle, but only the faintest remnants of the magic circle are visible today.

"Maybe, remember the big nasaty chimera we defeated, maybe this was it's lair." Tanrov will casts detect magic on the pile of treasure to see if it's an illusion or maybe has a magical aura maybe suggesting a trap? He doesn't go too close.

Kevin smiles, "It would be nice for this to have been that chimera and it's already taken care of. When you are done examining the pile we can search through it and see what it contains."


Just so you know, I'm not of the opinion that detect magic should be able to find magical traps or that's a ridiculous amount of utility from a 0 level spell. It also doesn't detect illusions unless you've already disbelieved them. As I see it 0 level spell should never trump a higher level spell.

You can detect some magic items amid the pile of treasure.

I was just using it to see if there was magic present, which would indicate either the presence of magic items or potentially traps.. not that it would reveal the traps, just the presence of magic.. i'm of the same opinion

Tanrov will approach the treasure having successfully derailed the upwards course, and he will examine the treasure for traps.

Perception: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (7) + 15 = 22

If he doesn't find anything he will go forth examining the treasure with detect magic to find the sources of magic within the pile and then lay it out before his companions


A close inspection convinces you it was the lair of chimera. You also don't find any traps.

The pile of coins and treasure comprises 3,438 cp, 1,319 sp, 7,753 gp, two pearls worth 500 gp each, three garnets worth 250 gp each, eight amethysts worth 100 gp each, 12 agates worth 50 gp each, an emerald-and-ivory scepter worth 4,000 gp, a silver candelabra worth 75 gp, a gold signet ring worth 50 gp, a bag of holding (type III) containing a small library of rare books that grant a +4 bonus on Knowledge (planes) checks when they are referenced (these two dozen books are worth a total of 2,000 gp) along with an empty blessed book, an efficient quiver containing two javelins of lightning and 19 +2 magical beast bane arrows, an elemental gem (earth), a dose of silversheen, a potion of lesser restoration, a scroll of dimension door, a scroll of move earth, a +1 f laming heavy crossbow, and a suit of +1 ghost touch full plate.

I'm cutting to the chase here, it assumes a bunch of spellcraft rolls and whatnot. Uelarik wouldn't have any trouble with it.

the eastern wall.

There is a man chained into one of the bunks. He is thrashing around and giggering. His equipment (chain shirt and rapier) are just out of his reach.

It seems clear that the cupboard is a bit short of cups here.

When he hears that Vhane is dead, he shows a strange mixture of anguish and relief on his face.

That sense motive would have trouble reading a puppy, so you're not really sure what it means.

Detect evil of course resounds with all the background evil (you are in the Worldwound) but he does come across as evil.
