Grum swings once more...
Hit: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Damage: 2d4 + 10 ⇒ (2, 3) + 10 = 15
...as he does so, he yells "Bite me will you? Eat THIS!"

DM Shisumo |

Grum's blade is savage, sending a spray of ichor across the swamp as the spider-like being reels. It attempts to regroup, hoping another venomous bite might slow down the mighty warrior; when that fails to land, it slashes at him with razor-sharp claws, managing to cut him twice and leaving the half-orc reeling.
Bite attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12, damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 plus a DC 15 Fort save
Claw #1: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25, damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5; crit confirm: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8, crit damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Claw #2: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16, damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Everyone but Grum.

Benedict the Clever |

Benedict slices at the creature. It is a well-placed strike, but doesn't sink as deeply as he hoped.
Scimitar: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Chang Jie |

Jie steps around the spider so it will have to divide its attention between Amkarang and herself. As she steps she drops the crossbow and draws her sword, swinging at the large pest.
Attqck: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Step 5' to flank spider, figuring Lissa with her reach can find a spot to flank also. Free action to drop crossbow, standard action to attack. Flank bonus is included in the to hit roll

DM Shisumo |

The spiderlike being wavers under Benedict's strike, but resolutely stays upright. Jie's sword is more than enough to finish off one of the spiders, however, and Lissa moves back to the north to strike at the other, cutting it down as well.
Glaive attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19, damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Amkarang still to go. Only the ettercap is still up.

![]() |

It had felt like the combat had taken ages, even though only a dozen or so seconds had gone by. Raising his blade once more, Grum swung again...
Hit with flank: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 5 + 2 = 22
Damage: 2d4 + 10 ⇒ (4, 3) + 10 = 17

Gm fatmanspencer |
The strange creature screeches at you in common " FOOLISH CREATURES! I shall eat you!" As it finishes talking, it then tries to bite Grum and slash him with its claws
2 claws: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 111d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Bite: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
damage from bite: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Fort save please Grum
Grum manages to deflect the blades of the claws with his, however the bite manages to catch him off guard and sink its mouth into him, tearing out a chunk of his arm.

![]() |

Fort: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
And that takes Grum down to -1 wounds. From my count, Grum already did 15 wounds to it on round 1, and Benedict did 10. Grum then did another 17 wounds to it on round 2 and Benedict did 4. So it has taken a total of 46 wounds. So I'm not too worried...it should be close to dead. Finish 'em off!
While the half-orc had the fortitude to easily shake off whatever poison was in the creature's fangs, he was less able to ignore the damage caused to him. Already slashed, mauled, and bitten, he felt his vision began to dim. Barring his teeth he tried to make a battle cry at his foe, but nothing came out. With a force of will he tried to lift his blade to attack. He managed to take a step forward, but it was too heavy. He fell face first into the ground, a pool of blood steadily forming around him.

Benedict the Clever |

Scimitar: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Benedict slashes at the monster, to no avail.
He takes a 5' step, guarding his fallen ally.

Chang Jie |

Jie yells out "Grum!" as the half orc falls to the ground. Wrenching her sword out of the spider she runs to the gap between Benedict and Amkarang and slashes at the monstrosity.
Attack with longsword: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Her sword blow goes wide.

Benedict the Clever |

Yeah, the description from Benedict's last hit suggested the ettercap was on its last legs before Grum hit it for that 17 damage.
Anyway, GM, we are botting Lissa until we can replace her with another PC. She uses a glaive one-handed with Shield Brace.

Amkarang the Unsinkable |

Amkarang lashes at the spider with his meteor hammer, striking especially furiously due to his comrade's fall.
Attack: 1d20 + 6 - 1 ⇒ (15) + 6 - 1 = 20
Damage: 1d8 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 2 = 11
Power attacking and attacking the spider. Might also be good to mention Amkarang is a man.

Gm fatmanspencer |
Lawl, sorry, I was speaking about Lissa.
Just as in the previous split second the fangs descend and tear at Grum, Amkarang smashes it down on top of Grum's prone body, the end of his hammer coming from inside of its skull with a sickening swquick. The group suddenly feels that a large dark presence has been lifted from the area, that small sense of dread finally gone.
I'm at work right now, so I will not be able to post treasure and stuff until later.

Benedict the Clever |

"Lissa, can you heal Grum?"
Lissa has a Fey Magic ability that lets her use CLW as a spell-like ability 1/day when in forest terrain.
While she is thinking about that, Benedict takes out his potion of Cure Light Wounds and administers it to Grum.
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Would not suggest using all our healing now, but do want Grum tough enough to withstand a random encounter on the way home.

![]() |

The darkness that clouded his vision recedes as the potion is poured down his throat. Grum's eyes snap open and he sits up, coughing and sputtering. Looking around wildly, he sees the body, and his comrades around him.
"Thank you!" As usual, he spoke louder than was strictly necessary. "That thing would have eaten me. Glad to have you all at my back." With that he planted his sword in the ground and used it as support to pull himself to his feet.

Chang Jie |

Jie sheathes her sword and then walks over to her bow and picks it up. Happy to see that Grum is back among the living she asks. "What was that thing? Do you think there might be more spiders out there?" She peers into the trees looking for more of the giant spiders.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21

![]() |

"Probably." Grum looked ahead at the Redoubt. It was what they had come to find. Though no larger than a typical forester's cabin, he hoped that it would still have something of use inside of it.
"We came to find that. And I've been clawed and bitten near to death today finding it. Let's go inside. If there are any more spiders, we kill them like we did these ones. I doubt that they've looted the place, they're not smart enough."

Gm fatmanspencer |
Most of the remains Chang spots are of squirrels, rabbits, and birds, but there are also two humanoid corpses. One of the corpses has on a very fine cloak attached to a shiny chain shirt, along with a shortbow and a quiver of arrows. The second body has a mace and scroll tube, along with a holy symbol of some kind. Scattered around are various gems, three agates, one rose quartz, and four amethysts. The door to the redoubt is still shut, so anything inside is either already gone, or untouched and unbothered. Further exploration of the area would be needed to make that call.

Chang Jie |

Doing a quick reconnoiter of the bodies Jie moves across the bridge, covering the shack with her bow. 'There is no way I'm bringing Feng over here' she thinks wistfully.
K/Religion on holy symbol: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Survival to cross onto island without becoming mired in the quicksand (1 higher if Perception is used): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
"I'll cover the shack." she informs the group.

Benedict the Clever |

Benedict, at full health and with good armor, will investigate the shelter.
He opens the door and looks around.
Perception, Take 10: 10 + 6 = 16
"The rangers were called away to Fort Trevalay. Possibly more Ironfang raids there to draw them off? We should let Aubrin know."
He helps gather up the items.
"If we squeezed, we could have maybe five or six sleep in here at a time. It's a start, but I think we need to find a bigger shelter. Like those caves."
Any food supplies left around here? I would think not, but maybe.

Chang Jie |

Jie starts poking around the webs, looking for eggs. "This place is a trap. Maybe if it dried out some, but as wet as it is, if the hobgoblins found our camp and attacked in force we would have no way to retreat. Also we would have to find some way of keeping the livestock out of the quicksand."
Jie's father is a ranger in these woods. I had discussed with GM Shisumo that his patrol area would be somewhere not close, so that Jie would not be tempted to just go to him for help. Does she know anything about Fort Trevalay?"
K/Local: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Probably not :(

![]() |

"Plus the spiders. Only a few here, but there might be more around. I wouldn't feel safe sleeping so close to them." Looking at the corpses, he continued "Think the spiders got these ones? Nice cloak on this one. Looks like it'd keep one warm at night. And that mail is still shiny. Let's loot the place and get going."

Chang Jie |

Jie looks over the redoubt as she helps loot the place. She doesn't let Feng get near, afraid he'll get mired in the mud. "I had such hopes for this place. Well, I guess we should hurry back to our camp and try to build as many shelters as possible. The weather should be nice this afternoon, but the refugees need some shelter tonight when it gets cold. We can try to find these caves tomorrow." Jie loads up Feng and mounts, ready to go.

Benedict the Clever |

"Yes, let's be on our way. We might need to spend tomorrow gathering food; we'll see how well our group has done today."

![]() |

Survival: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Making his way back to camp, Grum began diligently making shelter for the night.

Chang Jie |

Since Chang Jie is Tien and loosely based on Chinese culture, her given name is actually Jie and her family name is Chang. Just thought you might want to know:)
Survival: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Jie rides back with the others into camp, alert for danger, but disappointed that they do not bear better news. She helps build shelters for the rest of the day, but her disappointment shows and she doesn't make much progress. She does set the tent back up and volunteers to sleep with Feng outside, insisting that her time as a postal rider have inured her to the cold.
Just a reminder to everyone that Jie and Feng both have the Endurance feat. Also some of the refugees need to be assigned to care for the animals.

Benedict the Clever |

The redoubt wasn't that far (2 miles), and we didn't have any long delays, so we should have time to make multiple attempts for temporary shelters. What time is it now?
Benedict begins making shelters.
Survival: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
That's not enough for a temporary shelter with 1 hour's work, but hopefully he can keep working.
He reports back to Aubrin the Green.
"The rangers were called away to Fort Trevalay. Do you know where that is? I know we need to focus on keeping this group fed and safe, but perhaps Jie can find way to send word to the Fort.
Also, Grum is injured. Can you call upon your healing magic?"

Gm fatmanspencer |
It's only been about 4 hours, so mid day
Aubrin frowns slightly at the news that Benedict delivers, and seems a bit troubled they had been gone long enough for some monsters to set up camp. She tells him " I have only heard rumors of the location, so I can do nothing better than a wild goblin chase. However, I will do what I can about you needing healing. " She calls upon Cayden, healing Grum wounds.
Cure moderate: 2d8 + 3 ⇒ (3, 2) + 3 = 8
Seeing that Grum was still injuried, she would do it again.
Cure light: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
As an after thought, she mentions " If that spy was truly with the ironfang legion, that means there may be a supply train running already. We could retake our town quickly if they had no supplies."
Sense motive: 1d20 ⇒ 20

Benedict the Clever |

"Raiding a supply train would help us and hurt them. I'm up for it. We don't know where they are coming from, but we can at least go scout out the roads and paths."

Chang Jie |

Frustrated with her makeshift attempt for a shelter, Jie joins in the discussion that Benedict is having with Aubrin. "I'm up for raiding a supply train." She points out something she got a good look at in town. "When I was collecting Feng from the front of the Inn there was some sort of black tower that the hobgoblins were pouring out of in Phaendar. So I think that Phaendar will probably be supplied through that. But any forces that the hobgoblins have out in the field will probably be supplied out of Phaendar. We destroyed the bridge but I was never a member of the military. I'm not sure how a military supply structure would be set up. I do know the territory, however." With that Jie picks up a stick and starts to draw all the landmarks she knows, particularly trails that wagons would have to travel on, assuming that is how they transport the goods.

Benedict the Clever |

"Good idea, Jie."
Benedict tries to recall landmarks and add to the map.
Knowledge (Geography): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
He can only recall the basics of the Fangwood, and will have to rely on Aubrin for more detailed information.

Chang Jie |

"I think we can make another assumption. They would have left the Phaendar area around morning. Since we are a days travel away, if they have chosen to use a path that comes near, they should be arriving in our vicinity later this afternoon. So we might check the nearest such path and see if we can catch something."

Benedict the Clever |

"Depending on the size of their escort, we may want to split their forces. I can try my little magic trick again - take the form of a hobgoblin, tell them I am pursuing the rebels who destroyed the bridge, and ask for a detachment to come with me. Unless any of you have a better story.
I don't know what we can set up for a trap but we can at least split their forces. I should probably make sure my armor and weapons match the standard gear for one of their ranks."
Meanwhile, he will ask the NPC adepts to look at the items from the redoubt; the cloak, chain shirt, bow, arrows, mace, and scroll.

Gm fatmanspencer |
While talking about their plans, the adepts get working on the items. The scrolls seems a bit strange to them, as does the mace, but they can tell that all are magical. They know that's a cloak of resistance, and the arrows are +1 arrows, and they point out the patch on the chain shirt that shows that it is a common make of a +1 as well. They however ask for more time on the rest, and expect to be finished after you have made your plans for the rest of the day.
Aubrin adds in that the carts would move slower than people on foot, especially escorted in a hostile area, so it would be closer to nightfall, and you could possibly catch them asleep. She points out the most likely paths come out about an hour or two away from the camp you have now, but notes a few may be on the other side of the town, just depending on where they are going. She does mention a few smaller paths, as some lead to some farms and a few other various items within Fangwood, but doubts they are used.
Benedict make an Int roll, or Wis. You are trying to see if Aubrin is making sense, or is just hoping to slaughter sleeping Hobos.

Benedict the Clever |

Intelligence check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
He has no idea and trusts Aubrin.
"That's good advice. We can plan on late afternoon or evening. But, they can see in the dark so fighting them later at night puts Jie and Amkarang at a disadvantage. We do have some sunrods, I think. Even a Light spell on a rock, kept in a pocket until needed, would work."
Does he know about Jie's low-light vision?
Also, I was putting up my plan in Discussion as you were writing this. Benedict will share that idea with Aubrin.

Benedict the Clever |

"I can use my disguise, step out, and alter the plan based on what I see. If they seem too few to divide, I can shout "Rebels nearby! They've heard you! Form up!" - the signal for the rest to break cover and advance - and I'll pretend to join the lines until the rest arrive. Then I'll take a quick step and stab them in the back.
Grum, in this magic chain shirt you can move faster; might be worth it for this mission."
Benedict's main role is to find ways to use trickery and tactics to stack the odds in the party's favor, avoiding a fair fight whenever possible. Seems to fit with the themes of this AP. If is too much trouble we could just fight them head-on, of course.

Gm fatmanspencer |
Aubrin nodes in agreement. She mentions a few other things, but nothing of it is of note, baring one thing. The only thing you do catch is that some of the farms and trapper huts should still have hidden supplies. So even if the raid is a bust, you should be able to recover some supplies. After that, unless you go exploring, nothing of note happens as you sit and await the time to the ambush point.

Chang Jie |

Jie chimes in. "That sounds like a good idea. I'm up for it. One thing, however. My mother is a fey sorceress and some would say she has more then a little fey blood in her. That's why I can speak to birds and can see at night if there is even the slightest starlight." She seems pretty happy at finally being proactive against the hobgoblins.

Benedict the Clever |

Benedict looks for a good ambush point.
A hiding spot about 80' from the road where Grum and Amkarang can crouch hidden (not lying prone - they may need to move quickly). And some outcrop or bush that Jie and Feng can hide behind.
He'll work to camouflage the rest of the party. Taking 20 on Stealth as we work over and over at getting the foliage right.
If Grum will take the +1 chain shirt, then Benedict will wear the breastplate, buckler, crossbow, and scimitar combo of the tough fighter that guarded the bridge. That might have been a sergeant or something.

![]() |

Assuming that Grum is back up to full HP. He will indeed wear the chain shirt. Losing 1 point of AC for +10 movement speed and less ACP? A fair trade in my book. Is there any NPC who could use the scale mail with armored kilt?
Grum follows Benedict's plan. The man was turning out to be a good leader, a role which the half-orc was happy to have someone else fill. The chain shirt felt nice. After so long wearing his heavy scale mail, it felt like nothing. While he doubted that it could take a hit like his old loadout, there was something to say for increased mobility.
With his blade at the ready, Grum waited.
Take 10 on stealth...for a 10 with ACP. If gobbos are sighted,
then when they are near roll for stealth. For first roll, roll twice and take highest due to trait.

Benedict the Clever |

Hope we can Take 20 on Stealth by redoing the camouflage over and over until it is perfect. If not, still have the distance penalty to Perception, maybe a circumstance bonus for our preparation, and your trait.

Gm fatmanspencer |
As the group sits and waits, the start to hear in the distance the rolling sound of a few wagons. Seeing how the plains was laid out, this was either around the corpse of trees far off to their right, or it was a large supply train. After a few more minutes of not seeing anything, but continuing to hear it, the noise suddenly dies off, and the surrounding area gets deathly quiet.

Benedict the Clever |

Benedict uses Alter Self to take the form of a hobgoblin and steps out to the road.
What does he see?
Disguise, -2 different race penalty: 1d20 + 16 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 16 - 2 = 20
The sound suddenly ceasing implies they have stopped, maybe to camp, rather than fading off in the distance.
If in fact the sound was gradually fading, like they are moving away from us, we'd have to change the plan and pursue before they get away.
