I can have my character done by tonight. I have the alias up and I can have stats done soon. If I don't have my spell poppet I would have to make it soon after I get free so I would need to get to a grave to get all the materials just to keep that in mind.

Shadow Lodge

Ok looked into spell poppet if I lost it or it was destroyed I would need 500gp, the materials for mentioned, 8hrs for the ritual to take place. I'm a dedicated player and check posts constantly

Rolling!
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

I've been thinking of making a Rogue, but justifying a lawful evil one is going to be tough. Are races going to be the same as in the original post? Either core or close to core?

Well, we have a fetchling and an aasimar. So the more exotic races are permitted. But I would really come up with a good reason for them being on this planet. :P

Planning on a small change to Herzog. He'll have the Chain Fighter Alternate Racial trait. It just seems to fit him as a slaver.

Hah, no worries. I'm going with a Human Scroll scoundrel who before imprisonment was a very cutthroat contractor and lawyer. He committed fraud when the money was too good to pass up. He thought that he was smart enough to conceal the fraud, but overlooked a mistake due to his overconfidence (Pride sin). He's very much a skill-monkey type. Would you suggest a more combat-oriented or skill-oriented build? At the moment he has 14 skills trained (Thanks to the +2 skill ranks house rule) none of which are below a +6.

Shadow Lodge

Updated my alias just need to get skills and spells.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Tassadan here. I'd like to submit Todin Lael, a Human Scroll Scoundrel Rogue whose overconfidence and fraudulent business practices caused him to end up in Branderscar. In three days he will be sent to do backbreaking labor at the Talingarde salt mines until his death. Needless to say, he doesn't want that to happen.

The Sentencing of Todin Lael:
"The prosecution calls Mr. Todin Lael to the stand."

A tall, well muscled, handsome man with reddish-brown hair rises from his seat. The bailiff intercepts him as the he strides toward the witness box.

"Do you, Todin Lael, swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth upon penalty of facing the Shining Lord Mitra's Holy wrath?"

Todin smiles, responding, "Why wouldn't I?" An ironic chuckle rises from the members of the court. They know Todin, and Todin knows how to play a room. The gavel sounds and the protocol continues.

"Sir, answer the question."

"I swear I shall tell no lies in this court."

"Thank you.

Todin's thoughts, however, weren't so worthy of thanks: "The 'Shining Lord,' however, can go kiss his own shining ass."

As Todin approaches the witness box, his thoughts turn to an unpleasant conversation that had happened earlier in the afternoon. Three hours prior, he was sitting in a cell staring at the face of the most terrifying man he had ever encountered: Sir Balin of Karfeld, the Witch Hunter. This man alone had put to death scores of Todin's friends, family, and clients. Now he was staring at Todin, possibly looking to do the same.

"To what do I owe this pleasure, Sir Balin?" Todin sneered, "I believe I was accused of fraud, not witchcraft."

The knight was very clearly unamused: "Come off your high horse, Lael. I know you, I know your family, and you're nothing more than a bad apple that never rolled far from your twisted tree of a father. I could easily have you burned at the stake for your worship of the Fallen One. All it would take is a warrant to search your damned house. I'll find your shrine to The Enemy, indict you for blasphemy, and then you'll go up in smoke like your dear uncle did two years ago. And the worst part is? I'll be in the right to do so by the grace of Mitra and the courts of this nation."

Sweat began to bead upon Todin's brow. If there was anyone who could find evidence of his infernal worship, it was the Witch Hunter. Others would not cause such worry, but Balin was not only special, he was a specialist. It took the Righteous Knight no time at all to find an unholy altar in Todin's uncle's mansion two years prior. It was behind a hollow panel in the master bedroom that not even Todin knew about. To make an enemy of Balin was to know death itself.

"So, if you're going to kill me, why not get it over with? Why not simply tear my home apart in your insane fixation upon my family."

"Because you're going to live out the rest of your life in the service of the kingdom. You're giving me a fantastic opportunity. If convicted of fraud, you'll slave the rest of your life in the salt mines, finally doing some good for all the damage your family has caused to our country. You're young and strong, you'll do well down there and probably live a long, arduous life. If I convict you for blasphemy, however, you'll serve no other purpose than public spectacle. This is your opportunity for redemption, Todin. Confess to fraud. Tell the truth, and I won't have you burned alive in the town square. Plead not-guilty, and I will bring the full weight of my position down upon you. It's your choice. Don't f*** this up."

Back to the present, the prosecutor was approaching the bench. "Mr. Lael-"

"I'm going to stop you there, sir. I would like to change my plea. I report myself to be guilty of fraud in the third degree, and will accept the responsibilities and punishment thereof. I will gladly accept my life sentence to hard labor now."

"If I'm going to go away, it might as well appear to be on my own terms." he thought, as he was carted away to Branderscar prison to await processing. Apparently he had been marked as "dangerous" and a "flight risk" by the court. They didn't know how right they were.

His Family:

Todin Lael is from an old noble bloodline that stretches back to the founding of Talingarde. They had always been very close to the royal family and often intermarried with cousins and other extended relatives of the kings, attempting to exert power over the throne but never gaining the monarchy themselves. As such, the Lael family was usually delegated the more dirty deeds of the country. Espionage, sabotage, torture, and blackmail were only a few of the duties usually ascribed to them. This all changed with the rise of House Darius.

The patriarch of the family at the time, Kalfern Lael, was smart enough to see that the old nobility were in decline and that the House of Darius was on the rise. He secretly ingratiated himself to Darius's leadership, promising their patriarch full cooperation in any action against the existing crown. In this fashion, the House of Lael survived, but in a far lesser state than before. Even though they were considered Darius's allies, their previous practices (which in some ways continued) tainted the house's honor almost to the point of public disgrace. Due to their ignoble past (and sometimes present), House Lael is often seen as a lesser noble house at best. Many regard the whole family as outright criminals. Many members have served time for various infractions against the law or executed for their heretical devotion to Asmodeus, a relic of their ties to the previous royalty.

This was the family that Todin grew up in, and he was their most talented scion by far. From an early age he exhibited a unique talent for exploiting the weaknesses of others. With a foil he could find a hole in almost any other student's guard. In school, his assigned essays would often harp upon lesser details of otherwise well-accepted arguments, showing the blatant logical fallacies in core beliefs of "morality" or "mercy." If Machiavelli existed in Talingarde, Todin would be his biggest fan.

Lesser known is Todin's skill with locks, pickpocketing, and misdirection. The Lael family teaches all of its bloodline their ancestral techniques of espionage and thievery. Well trained, extremely talented, and ruthless to a fault, few men who have challenged Todin Lael to contests of intellectual or physical puissance have left unscathed.

His Crime:

Todin was a prominent criminal defense attorney of cutthroat repute. If you wanted a harsh negotiator, Todin Lael was your man. Functioning just within the letter of the law, Lael won most of his cases by intimidation, half-truths, and finding minute technicalities by which he could prove his clients not-guilty.

He was also infamous for treating his clients as harshly as he did his opponents. If he could, he swindled every last penny from his client's bank accounts in return for his services. This was to fund his supposedly lucrative real-estate business. Due to the economy, however, many of the mortgages of his clients had gone belly up, causing him to cook the books to still appear successful.

In reality, he was using the money of several very wealthy investors in the community to keep the failing business afloat. Thinking the investors to be beneath his intellect, he thought that his personality and charm alone could fool the vast majority of those who inquired about where these funds were going and why they had yet to see returns. Todin heavily overestimated his abilities. When it was revealed that the "success" was totally fraudulent, all of the investors took heavy losses. Many were brought to the point of bankruptcy as well, some even committing suicide due to the egregious debt they now owed others from suddenly living far beyond their means. Todin ruined the lives of these men, and his crime was dealt as a felony by the royal courts.

"Ah yes, Mr. Draxus, that handsome dowry you received would do quite nicely for my fees. Quite nicely indeed..."

The best part of working in criminal defense is that, win or lose, you still get paid by the hour.

@Shalastar: We're just playing around and having fun, of course. If either of us is chosen but the other isn't, we'll obviously not care. It's not like our characters aren't tied together in any way backstory-wise, we're just passing the time until someone's chosen.

Indeed, just having some fun in the meantime.

No problems here. Have fun all you want. That's what the boards are for, of course.

Anything else needed?

Vexis LaVayn, female human poisoner/inquisitor of deception (Pride, Forgery)
Herzog Hagruk, male half-orc sin-eater (inquisitor) (Pride, Slave-trading)
Jericho Fiendaxe, male human fighter (Pride, Pirate)
Sothya Zin, male elf bladebound (magus) (Envy, High Treason)
Jude Draxus, male human sound striker (bard) (Envy, Murder)
Preston Cornelius, male dhampir grave walker (witch) (Wrath and Lust, Consorting with Dark Powers)
Todin Lael, male human scroll scoundrel (rogue) (Pride, Fraud)

I don't think we need anything more. But I'm going to go ahead and officially close submissions for the time being. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to resubmit a character. The original players have a decision or two to make.

Alright, thank you everyone for your submissions :)

We've voted and agreed on Sothya Zin and Todin Lael as our replacement characters. Feel free to join the Discussion Thread, where you can join our ongoing talk and we'll work out how to introduce you to the game.

As for everyone else, thank you for your hard work. There were a lot of excellent ideas and it was difficult choosing just two.

Thanks and good luck!

Admittedly, I peaked in the discussion thread and I just wanted to say I appreciate seeing the feedback from your thoughtful choice. Thank you.

Still paging Sothya to the Discussion Thread. Megan is catching up, but will begin DMing soon I hope. :P

Reopening Recruitment:)

We've recently lost a Sloth Player. So please look over the original post in this thread and build a character with the Sloth sin.

I built this Cleric of Asmodeus for another Way of the Wicked game but didnt have time to complete him before the deadline. He'll need a little recrunching (he was built using Gestalt rules) and I'll have to finish up his background (not listed yet) but otherwise would fit right in.

where are the specs for the Sins? I dont see anything in the OP about the Sins. Sloth would work just fine for my overweight and apathetic Malak though.

Sins are described in a spoiler in the first post in this thread.

http://paizo.com/campaigns/WayOfTheWicked40qtx/recruiting&page=1

^ Thanks Jack. Not sure how I missed that. Sloth sounds perfect then. I can have everything recrunched this evening (EST) and background possibly by tomorrow.

I'd focus on the background unless you feel the crunch is necessary for it :) I, for one, like to think that I look more to that than the mechanics. [/2cp]

Background's important especially if you are playing an unusual race. You know, I have a Cleric of Asmodeus as one of my background contacts; he was the one who saved me from the Plane of Shadow, and from my own background as a unmentionable slave to a Shae. Something to consider is we might have both known the same Cleric (perhaps your instructor?)

Dark Archive

I'm interested in presenting either a Sorcerer or a Master Summoner. I'll wait until I hear what the party really needs before going forward with anything. Well, going forward or withdrawing, either way.

Edit: I was actaully just struck with inspiration to make a Master Summoner whose Eidolon is a Quadruped with the Mount evolution. Form of the Eidolon? Chair. I'll have some fluff up shortly. I might get some crunch out as well.

Dark Archive

Just a hair to late to edit that post again...

Xerxesxembet Fizzledom:

Gnome Summoner

Mildly (read: very) obese.

Xerxes was a well known slave trader before being caught in the act in Talingarde. He had everything he could have dreamed of: money, power, women . All of these sailed away on his xebec after his treacherous partner left him to rot. He has plans though. Plans for revenge against Barnabas and the people that have locked him up, both.

I’ll have more background up in the morning. I just wanted to put something down before leaving work for the day. I'll likely have some crunch for you.

Yeah, I'm going to have to see this. . .chair summoner for myself.

It looks like we'll be getting multiple applications. I suppose we can leave the recruitment open through Thursday, and make our final decision and get back to playing on Friday. :)

Sounds fantastic! A note to all applicants, here is a list of who we have already:

Sothya Zin, male elf Bladebound Magus (Envy, High Treason)

Todin Lael, male human Scroll Scoundrel Rogue (Pride, Fraud)

Shalastar Lerin, male Fetchling Lust Sorcerer (Lust, Sedition)

Targi Silverspike, Female Dwarf Forgemaster Cleric of Mammon (Greed, Forgery)

Jack Cross, Male Damphir Cad Fighter (Gluttony, Dueling Unto Death)

As you can see, we have pretty much all the bases covered, so feel free to be creative with your sin of Sloth and crime in the creation of your character.

You forgot; Tragen Blackmourne, male aasimar (angelkin) antipaladin (wrath, grave robbery).

Dark Archive

Sometime in the middle of the night I remembered that Tieflings can be small if their mortal parentage reflects that. I think I'm going to rewrite Xerxes as a Beastblood Tiefling. Pretty much everything else about him will remain the same, just the race and race traits will change.

Well, the race and I'm pretty sure the chair is now a chaise lounge.

Jack Cross wrote:

Oh yeah! He hadn't acted due to unconsciousness, so I had completely forgot.

Luckily I don't snore.

I would be interested in playing either a Witch Gravewalker or a Cleric Undead Lord, both of which I think would be fitting of sloth.

I'd be willing to tie history into the story thus far, though looking over the game play it does not look like you got very far... are you still basically in the beginning?

We haven't gotten out of the cellblock yet, so there's currently not much plot to integrate yet.

So, we have the following applicants:

Xerxes Fizzledom, gnomish beastblood tiefling Summoner. (Sloth, Slave Trading)
Malak Jaedoom, human Infernal Barrister (Sloth, Desecration)
Artorius's Witch Gravewalker or Undead Lord (Sloth)

Finish the character concept, Artorius, and we'll keep you in the running. I think we have enough to make a decision from.

Background:
Artorius Pavo was the first born son of Grachan Pavo who traced his lineage back to the lords of Barca. Unlike many of the off-shoots of the Barca line (and even some within the line) the house of Pavo kept the blood pure and old. The vast majority of the family were either full blooded elves or close enough to be considered such. So was the case of Artorius Pavo. Although young at the time, Artorius saw the rise of the house of Darius and the war between the King’s of Barca. His father was one of the elite cavalry to be slain on the bridge of Tamberlyn. When the usurper seized power house Pavo was not spared retribution. The majority of its lands were taken and its wealth confiscated. Humans, short lived and short sighted took over the beautiful manors and pleasure gardens of the house of Pavo, while Artorius, his mother, and two sisters were forced into a state of near destitution. For a long while Artorius and his family dwelled in great city in a crumbling tower that had been left to their family. One of his sisters was forced to sell her body, while the other begged former friends for charity. It was the former who brought in the majority of the needed money to survive. Artorius’s mother locked herself away and prayed to the gods for revenge, while Artorius grieved his father’s death. So great was his grief that he turned to the study of the powers of life and death, searching for a way to restore his departed father to life. He failed in this and eventually rumors began to spread about the Pavos. Rather than face accusations, they abandoned the crumbling tower and the shattered remains of their old life. Fleeing the great city, the remains of the Pavo line settled near the borderlands and under the guidance of his mother, began to revive their fortune on the backs of slaves. For years the Pavo’s were at the head of a sinister slave-trade between the Iraen and the Yutak, capturing people of all creeds, races, and faiths. So successful had the house been in this illicit trade that they grow complacent. Within their own manor along the borderlands they had a dozen slaves serving them. This would have been fine, except that the matriarch of the family had turned to the faith of Asmodeus following her husband’s death and began to taint the slave trade with her faith. More and more within the chain took up the sinister faith and this in turn led the witch-hunters and inquisitors to the Artorius and his family. Artorius was seized, but his mother fought on. He watched as they cut her down and then committed her to the flames for heresy and treason. His sentence was somewhat less drastic – he was convicted of being a slave trader, along with his sisters. Their fate was merely death by beheading. Now he awaits his execution, calling out to all the dark powers he has ever researched in a desperate attempt to preserve his existence and get his revenge.

I have posted my background idea above. I will be taking the slave-trader crime and I have settled on being an Elven Gravewalker witch. If selected, I'd like to have not yet encountered the poppet familiar, which would explain his lack of methods of freeing himself.

Focus: Intelligence
Foible: Strength
dex: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
con: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
wisdom: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
charisma: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

It looks like he will be extremely frail, so maybe I will include that he did resist and was beaten bloody and near crippled (8 strength, 6 con) but I could work with it.

Malak regarded the others through heavy lidded eyes.

Well, I for one am glad that they are taking their sweet time in the decision. I could use a rest...all that time pondering possibilities has left me exhausted... and this spot looks as good as the next. You two should get comfortable as well.

Way of the wicked is my White Whale.

Dark Archive

I didn’t realize I’d not posted this earlier, apologies.

background:
It is the creak of hemp rope on well weathered wood that I miss the most. It can lull one to sleep more swiftly than even a mother’s lullaby. It’s been a while since I’ve heard that sound. Since I was betrayed by my partner, Barnabas.

He and I had known each other for quite some time. You learn swiftly, when working the slave trade, that you have no friends. You simply have those that have yet to betray you. I left the ship, my xebec the Xephyr Wind, to close a few sales at a Talingarde estate. Barnabas could never be trusted with the truly delicate sales.

I was waylaid by the guard on the return trip. They’d received a tip that a slave trader was in town and I matched his description. They found the merchandise at the estate of a relatively petty lord and I was off to Branderscar.

I’ve always had a gift for sorting out what others want and convincing them that it matched what I had. It’s how I wound up in the slave trade years ago. I managed to outmaneuver a slaver’s negotiator in… the city doesn’t matter. I made an impression and was quickly offered a place of prestige.

I made the man, Regnar, a fortune and one of my own. He was short-sighted and impatient, however. He made far too many demands and gave me little time to enjoy my gains. Soon enough, I’d convinced his cronies that life would be far better under my command. Regnar was sold into slavery and I acquired a new pair of ships.

I came from a small village that few had ever heard of. My mother was from far grander lands. The sun shone and bronzed her skin. The winds blew ships to the ports of her homeland. Her family was very well off.

When she first saw the signs of my taint, she fled from that home with me. She was terrified what their reaction might be. She took what she could to fund our lives and made for the coast. She, unfortunately, died a decade or so afterward. I believe. Gnomish women don’t fare well when a coast town is attacked by pirates. I’m not sure if they killed her or if they took her with them, but I never saw her again.

I used my charm to gain affluence and decadence. Eventually, I met Regnar and decided that scamming the locals was getting old and my luck in not infuriating the wrong man was wearing thin.

It should probably be a black whale. Preferably with spiky whale armor. :)

Anyways, good luck to everyone on getting in.

I'm also looking forward to Throne of Night, but I understand that is still in the works.

I'm unsure if recruiting for this has stalled, been cancelled or been completed, but I am going to withdraw my application. Thank you for your consideration and, if recruitment is actually still open, good luck to the other two applicants.
