Sotha Zyn |

Rather than enter and break things, Sotha performed amore thorough inspecton, starting with the wardrobe and then
As he searched, he spoke to Todin, "Perhaps while we are searching in here you might take Grumblejack and try your skill at the lock on the armory?"

Shalastar Lerin |

So just to get the image of what's going on... Tragen is trashing the room, knocking over the wardrobe after looking in it. Shalastar is going through the clothing, and Sotha is looking in the wardrobe again. That is a very busy wardrobe. :P

![]() |
Tragen is busy trashing an already messy room... in the wardrobe he finds a bottle of what looks like 'rotgut' whiskey, only there appear to be some ground-up herbs floating in it.
Under the bed, Sotha finds a chest with a substantial lock.
Meanwhile Malak mutters something under his breath and starts scanning for magic. There's none in the sergeant's bedroom, nor in the storeroom.
Shalastar, with Gordie never far from him (and casting adoring glances all the while), pokes around the clothing. Nothing is particularly fine, but there is a good black cloak of stout wool and a tunic that doesn't look too bad except it hangs on him like a tent... the sergeant is, shall we say, on the burly side.

Shalastar Lerin |

"Wool... itches. But the tunic is... acceptable."
He dresses quickly, using the wardrobe itself for modesty, though he usually does not know the meaning of the word. Still, it wouldn't do to make all his new friends go catatonic with his physical perfection.
The tunic fits more like a robe or gown, draping down to well past his knees, but with a few leather belts across the chest and waist, the tunic becomes a stunning fashion statement.

Todin Lael |

"Yes, yes, yes. One request at a time, now."
Before he commences with picking locks, Todin looks around to make sure it is safe. If he believes so, he will take off his chain shirt to achieve greater results. If he does not deem the area safe, he will keep the chain shirt on and take a -2 to his disable device checks.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
First he attempts to pick the armory door lock:
Disable Device: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
Then the Chest that Sotha found:
Disable Device: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26

![]() |
Todin, it depends how safe you feel around your fellow convicts... :)
No sign of any external threat, though.
Todin strips off his mail shirt and sets to work with a will. The armoury door's lock clicks open with surprising ease. Inside are six spare sets of gear for guards: chain shirt, heavy steel shield, long sword and longbow. There is also a rack holding a dozen more leather-wrapped clubs. Further, there is also a stock pile of 240 arrows in twelve quivers. These items (save for the arrows and the clubs) bear the mark of Talingarde somewhere on them. There is also an assortment of weaponry that the guards have confiscated over the years. These weapons are jumbled together and obviously little cared for.
Todin then turns his attention to the chest from under the sergeant's bed. This proves more resistant and fails to open on his first attempt.

Tragen Blackmourne |
- Angelkin Purifier 5

@Todin: Do you have two ranks in Disable Device? If so, I think you'd have a +10 (2 Ranks, +3 in-class, +4 DEX, +1 trapfinding). If that's case you could take a couple of minutes (take 20) in order to get through a DC 30 lock. If it's more than DC 30, then Tragen can smash it, lol.

Tragen Blackmourne |
- Angelkin Purifier 5

Assuming Todin will have to Take 20 to open (thus hoping it's not a DC 35+ box)
Leaving Todin to his work at the lock-box, Tragen moves into the armory to search through the assortment of confiscated weaponry, looking for ones still in good condition and thus be servicable.

Malak Jaedoom |

I have faith in your skills brother...and if they fall short this time then I'm sure mister Tragen's brawn will prevail.
Malak muttered dark words under his breath as he watched from his seat...could use a bit of padding and a foot rest but is far better than standing...and wondered how far their motley crew would get without being harrassed by more guards.
Cast Guidance on Todin. +1 to his Disable Device

Todin Lael |

If Todin indeed does not succeed with his 28 (I figured it may be a non-canon DC since the book is 3rd party) then he will indeed take 20 for a total of 31, saying:

![]() |
Todin, raising the curtain for a moment I'll tell you it's a DC30 lock, so take 20 and you'll get in!
Todin, this is a tricky one alright, so you set back on your heels, contemplate it for a moment, utter a hair-curling imprecation on its maker and his parents, then return to your labours... after a full five minutes of effort (never since you first began to learn how to pick locks have you taken so long!) it springs free!
The chest contains a dozen bottles of rotgut whiskey and a large leather bag full of coins - some 1,235 gp!
Tragen, meanwhile, is poking through the weapons stashed in the armoury. The assortment of confiscated weapons includes a shiv made from a women's metal comb (treat as a dagger), a heavy mace, spear, quarterstaff, battle axe, rapier, great sword, trident and glaive. All are unmarked and useable, even if they could use a little attention in terms of polishing!

Sotha Zyn |

Sotha also raided the armory along with Tragen. He was hoping to find a scimitar, but settled on the rapier. He left the sword that he'd taken in the armory, giving the rapier a few swings before sighing disapppointedly.
He headed back to the sergeant's quarters, his mood brightening when he saw the money. "That will do us some good." He said.

Todin Lael |

Todin wipes the sweat from his brow.
"Indeed it will. Glad it was worth the time. I'll hold onto it for safe keeping."
Todin dons his chain shirt once more, and sees the rapier at Sotha's side.
"Say, there weren't any more of those, were there?"

Tragen Blackmourne |
- Angelkin Purifier 5

Tragen hefts the greatsword before strapping across his back. He then grabs a few other weapons and carries them back to the other room.
"Here," he says, tossing the metal comb shiv to Shalastar. "This should fit with your... tastes. Bring them close with your and surpise them with it."
He then pulls out the heavy mace, looks at Malak, then looks back down at the mace before offering it to him. "I understand that such a weapon is preferred among the Asmodean clergy... Take it, if you think you can use it to smash our foes."
He offers the battleaxe to Targi. "I don't know what weapon your god may prefer, but I have seen many a dwarf wield a battleaxe with skill. Perhaps you can make use of it to cut our many enemies in twain."
"I'm afraid," Tragen says, turning to Todin, "That the only such fragile weapons were the comb and rapier. Perhaps Sotha could be convinced to give it up for something of more... substance. If not, perhaps you could use this?" he says offering the spear.
Looking at Jack, "I am not sure what sort of weapons you may prefer. But I also brought these, although I may keep the glaive for myself," he says, showing the trident and glaive.
"The rest, aside from a staff that I left behind, were merely the guard's typical fare," he says indicating the armor and weapons they had earlier acquired from the guards.

Malak Jaedoom |

Grinning in spite of disdaining the use of such barbaric tools; Malak readily accepted the gift of the mace...this mans knows what the Dark Prince favors...interesting... and hooked it onto his belt.
Gratitude Mister Tragen. I'd say we are more than prepared to make our way out of this laughable excuse for a prison armed as we are now.
...he also understood each of our preferences...this man is astute...a valuable resource indeed...

Malak Jaedoom |

Shalastar Lerin |

"The front door will probably be guarded, but it's possible if we find the warden, we'll find some of our old things. I don't think our most valuable possessions would have just been destroyed. They are worth something. But then again, the Empire is not known for its frivolous excesses, much more the pity."

Tragen Blackmourne |
- Angelkin Purifier 5

"We cannot leave until all have been destroyed. Those who discover the ruins of this place will know to fear our wrath," Tragen says with a clenched fist.
Taking a deep breath, he continues: "We know the sergent is in the gatehouse, gambling with the other guards, and we know the warden tends to keep to himself at night and so will be in his tower," Tragen says, pointing at the two locations.
"We could visit the warden first and then clean up the sergent and guards on the way out, or we can take down the sergent first and then come back in to deal with the warden. This decision should depend on the possible movements of the guards. How long do these gambling sessions usually last?" he asks of Shalastar's 'friend'.

Todin Lael |

"Much thanks, Elf. And worry not, we will divide the spoils at a more appropriate time. You have my word as a lord that I shall render unto Sotha what is Sotha's."
Todin raises his arm as he takes this oath, and accepts the rapier. His eyes run over the blade as he sheathes the dagger that once was in his hand.
"An elegant weapon for a more civilized technique. Hmmm... As much as I'm in favor of getting out of here, I believe our chances are best if we leave no survivors to fire at our backs as we flee. It might also do best to take the warden by surprise. I doubt he'll be prepared for an attack in the middle of his indulgent gambling. So... who's up for a little surprise warfare with our wonderful warden?"

Targi Silverspike |

Targi squints at Tragen as he remarks upon the dwarf's likely skill with an axe, furrowing her brow as she tries to parse the line for any hidden insults. Finding none, she shrugs and accepts the weapon. "I suppose you're right. If it is corpses you wish as a carpet, I can only hope that the crimson path does not splatter and stain any jeweled coffers at the trail's end." She hefts the spear, hunts about for material to hang it across her back, and then readies herself to move on.

Sotha Zyn |

Gee, I wonder what god it is that is smiling on Sotha. . .
Upon handing over the rapier, Sotha immediately headed back to the armory to retrieve the longsword he'd left. As he was about to grab it, he saw something out of the corner of his eye, could it be? He moved the pile a bit and was elated to find a scimitar! His family had always denigrated the weapons as inferior knockoffs of the two handed curved blades his people had used since time immemorial, but a scimitar had always served Sotha's interests perfectly well.
When he returned, Sotha heard the others discussing their next move. He offered, "For what it's worth, taking down the Wardin would likely return my spellbook to me, which would allow me to offer more in battle than just another swinging blade."

![]() |
Gordie says "The sergeant and his cronies are liable to be gambling most of the night - maybe about 4am. The Warden will already be in his tower and tends to be grumpy if called - and nothing short of banging on his door will get his attention at all. Why, last year there was a fire in the kitchen and he only found out about it the next morning when he came out to ask where his breakfast was!"
He thought for a moment.
"If you had a spellbook when you came here, it's likely the Warden has it. He fancies himself quite the scholar, you know."

Malak Jaedoom |

Malak could barely contain his excitement that everyone seemed to be on board with whoel sale slaughter...someone made a very big mistake putting these men into the same cell...and not keeping a closer eye on the situation...a very big mistake...
Out and up to see the Warden then. I think he's going to want to wake up for us. Of coure this means we will have to go outside. Although with our guard uniforms on we shouldnt get too much notice...except for the big guy there.
The priest rolled the map back up and gestured towards their large companion.
Best we move fast across open ground.

Tragen Blackmourne |
- Angelkin Purifier 5

"Agreed. We take the warden...," Tragen says, then with a sidelong glance at Shalastar and Gordie, he rolles his eyes and continues, "... to church. And then we can root out those 'traitors' to the 'Empire' with the sergent." Tragen's voice drips with sarcasm, and he does not try to hide the lie.
"Perhaps you might consider putting your 'friend' on post as a lookout for us while we work," he says looking directly at Shalastar.

Shalastar Lerin |

"He might be able to draw the Warden out for us. It would be easier to do what is required then." Shalastar also looks at Gordie. "We do owe you an explanation. I know you're our friend now, and you deserve that at least. One will be forthcoming as soon as we're outside these walls with our proper belongings."

Sotha Zyn |

"That is a good idea, actually," Sotha said, giving his new scimitar a few practice swings. He seemed more content with this weapon than the rapier. "It would be a bad idea to confront the man in his own domain, if he fancies himself a spellcaster." Under his breath, Sotha added, "Unless he proves as competent as what we've faced so far."
Satisfied that they had decided their next coarse, Sotha headed for the exit, hoping that he would inspire the others to follow.

Malak Jaedoom |

Malak grinned and fell into the center of the line where he'd be protected by either a frontal or rear assault...hopefully they don't try to rush this...
Yes, well if he's a spell caster we'll have to be extra careful but surely there are plenty of us that he wont be too much of a problem.

![]() |
OK, where are you going?
Here's the map - the Warden's tower is #21, if that is where you want to go next.

Tragen Blackmourne |
- Angelkin Purifier 5

That's the plan. I figure left along the path to the tower, keeping to the darkness as much as possible.

Shalastar Lerin |

It looks like there's a back door, from the kitchen. If the front entrance is being watched (and thus the courtyard between the building and the wall), perhaps it might be better to use the kitchen door and slide around the back to the Warden's tower.

![]() |
Yes - #11 is the kitchen. Do you want to go that way and out the back?
Gordie says that there will be a single guard on the roof of the gatehouse (there ought to be a pair but one will be at the card game), and there are some dogs kennelled out front as well (kennel is #7, and those dogs are usually hungry and restless!). He leads you back through the main keep, across the hall into the mess hall (#10) which is empty save for tables, benches and a big banner on the wall and on to the kitchen.
This is a well-equipped kitchen with a large fireplace. A fellow wrapped in a big green cloak is dozing in an armchair by the fireplace.

Shalastar Lerin |

Shalastar waits for a moment or two, knowing that one of his companions would likely slit the fellow's throat. (It seemed to be a recurring theme in any case.) He begins carefully making his way across the kitchen, being quiet so as not to wake the sleeping victim.
Stealth (10)
10 + 6 = 16

Sotha Zyn |

Taking 10 on the stealth roll, if I can, which with the +1 to dex and the -2 for armor, gives me a 9. Everything that follows assumes that is enough to not wake him up.
Sotha decided the sleeping figure would make a fine test of his new scimitar, and so began to approach, slowly and quietly as he was able.
When he reached the sleeping figure, he looked him over before placing the scimitar at his neck and slicing.
Coup De Grace: 1d6 + 3 + 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 + (2) + 3 = 12

Tragen Blackmourne |
- Angelkin Purifier 5

Tragen watches Sotha slice the sleeping man's throat before heading do the door. Put your back into it man. He stops his move with Malak's words.
"Good point. Perhaps we can soak some meat in poison or that rotgut that Jack was drinking," he says looking back the way they had come. "Unless he finished the bottle before he passed out. Then again, they probably know better." With a shrug, he then begins to search the room for suitable fare, such as raw meats and the like.

Shalastar Lerin |

"It's not likely we'll come in contact with them, they are up front after all. We're going around the back." Shalastar says impudently. He sighs in acquiescence, however and adjusts his tone. "Though I suppose if they should come our way, we should deal with them." Shalastar looks over at Gordie. "Can you get the dogs to be quiet if they do start barking at us? I have a feeling they'll trust you more than us."

Tragen Blackmourne |
- Angelkin Purifier 5

"We may not encounter them on the way to the Warden, but we'll likely pass them by when we go to deal with the Sergent and leave this place," Tragen says before glancing at Gordie, "Or rather than trust, if there happens to be any commands that they respond to by those in a guard's uniform, assuming there is not a specific guard who serves as their master."
