The guard watched in detached disbelief as the manacle swung around to connect with his chin. There was a sickening crack as blood and spittle flew in a corona around the guard's face. As though his skeleton had suddenly and violently been ripped from his body, the guard collapsed lifelessly to the floor.

>:D

Cain looks back over at the remaining guard while pointing at his newest victim, whispering in a malevolent, singsongy voice, "This little piggy went to heaven…"

"Gloat later. The key! Find the key!" He hissed, assuming the hulking brute had been too stupid to miss his previous advice. Now he just had to hope he'd listen now.

It's cool mate. Alexite would just figure Cain was too stupid. But then stop caring about it once he was free.

Lol. That's fair. Let's see how this full round plays out before I make any decisions on what I'm going to do once my turn comes back around.

Like i said, I really don't want this second guard making it past Cain.

Unwilling to drop his club to free up his longsword, the remaining guard presses the attack.

Guard Bob, attack, Cain: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14

2 non-lethal damage, Cain.

Guard Bob scores a blow against Cain which the brute seems to shrug off. With Cain between the guard and freedom, he throws his club to one side and throws himself on his knees.

"Mercy, please, mercy!" he sobs, curling up into a ball.

Gideon cannot help but to smirk as the hapless guard is beaten to a bloody pulp. That the other was brought to his knees only sweetened the sentiment. He had figured that Cain would take the initiative in trying to get out, but he had not anticipated that it would be so... easy.

Looking at his own manacles, Gideon decides to give breaking them another go.

Since Cain was taking 20 to search the dead guard's body, does he find the keys?

Dark Archive

Yes, Cain will indeed locate the keys upon the dead guard's person. The guard also has the following on him:

- chain shirt
- heavy steel shield x2 (One from Guard Bob)
- longsword x2 (One from Guard Bob)
- leather club x2 (One from Guard Bob)
- longbow with 20 arrows x2 (One from Guard Bob)
- a key x2 (One from Guard Bob)

Also, everyone has 300 exp from events so far. Assuming we fast forward a bit so that everyone is free of their shackles and manacles, what do you folks intend to do next?

As everyone is freed from their shackles, Cain looks around at the looted equipment. Then he looks over at Gideon, "Hey, big guy. You know what to do with a sword? If so, wanna make yerself useful and take the armor and a sword?"

People feel free to take what is best for their character, but here's what I'd suggest. Gideon take the chain shirt and a sword. Only three of us can use the shields (Cain, Gideon, and Price). Based on that, I'd actually suggest that Cain and Gideon hold onto those. This puts Gideon in excellent condition to meat-shield for us with Cain as a back-up meat-shield. If we go that route, then i'd suggest Price take a long-bow and hang back to do support damage and spell-casting. That leaves the two leather clubs and one longsword. I believe only Cain is proficient with the longsword (correct me if i'm wrong). And then that leaves Price, Alexite, Haruk, and Elis to split the two leather clubs and the remaining longbow.

Everyone weigh in on gear, please.

As the group of allies-of-opportunity arm themselves, Cain looks over at the rest of them. "So what do we do now? Our piggy Bob here can tell us what's waitin' for us out there, on this level and on the others. Other than that, anyone got any ideas?" His eyes end on Price; he's used to letting her make the plans.

I guess that leaves Haruk and his meeting. Also, can we put that charm hex to good use here? :)

Male Human Sorcerer(Infneral) 5/Infernal Disciple 3

Haruk gets up and streches, his tattoos rippling as he does so. Far from being an overly physical type, he is nonetheless in decent shape. He pauses, thinking about the walk back to this cell "Bob right?, pleasure meeting you. My name's Haruk, listen my friends and I need to get out of here, and we could use your help. First thing is we need you to take us to that other prisoner down here. Then, your going to tell us the best way out of here. Think you can manage that?" Casting Charm Person DC 19

Once that's done, he turns to his friends and fills them in on his meeting. He then looks over the veil much more thoroughly. Let me know if I need to make a roll here

"Now that is much better." Elis stretches her arms and legs, as well as stretching her jaw now that that disgusting rag has been removed. "As for the barbaric tools there," she points to the gear off of the guards, "I am sure I will be fine without any of it."

A pleased expression creeps onto Gideon's face as he steps away from the wall, rubbing his wrists with callused hands. He could not have dreamed that things would go so well. Hearing Cain's question, he smirks, giving him a nod. "Why, certainly.

Tearing off what remains of the pathetic excuse of a shirt covering his body, Gideon quickly slips on the chain shirt, before claiming one of the longswords. He decides to leave the shields in place for the time being. Weighing the sword in his hand, he frowns a bit as he gives a small flourish, being more used to larger armaments. No matter - he was in no position to be picky. This will work just fine.

Lowering the blade, he turns to the others, watching as Haruk speaks to the guard. If something went awry, they would have to fell Bob quickly.

New AC total is 15, flat-footed 14.

The only other person who can use the shield is Price. If she wants it, great. But if she's not going to use it, there's no reason for Gideon not to have it. I guess unless you plan to two-hand the sword. /shrugs

Don't worry about it. It's about who can use the equipment best to get us out of here. If buffing up our front-line keeps you guys in the fight and undamaged so I can focus on offensive attacks and spells instead of healing, that's a bargain as far as I'm concerned.

We also need to figure out how best to put the Ogre to use. If he isn't rabid... he'd be a fine front-line. If he is rabid, it would be great to set him loose far away from us as a distraction to keep the heat off of us.

I can take or leave the shield. Here's the argument as I see it. If Gideon and Cain take shields, we have a fully buffed front-line. If we move through here quickly - that's to our advantage. The weakness then is our flank in case we get hit from multiple sides. And, as we roam through this prison, possible rear attacks become more likely since we won't be able to clear every room and corridor as we head out - assuming this prison is big. To me, that is an acceptable risk, but I can see why we might want to have some sort of protection back there 'just in case', even if it is just a single shield. If Price is wielding a bow mostly, the shield will have to go over her back so she won't be able to deploy it instantly in case of a rear attack... so it becomes slightly less useful. I guess the decision hinges on how everyone assesses the risks. I'm fine with Gideon taking the shield and us having a slightly squishy back-end.

Oh, I figured CAin would take up rear-guard with the shield. He's the fastest member of the group, so getting to the front to reinforce Gideon (if that becomes necessary) would be easier for him.

HP 21 | AC/T/FF 14/12/12 | CMD 17 | F+3 / R+3 / W+8 | Init +6; PER +10 | Image

Oh. Then lets DEFINITELY give the shield to Gideon. If the back is covered, then Price really won't need the shield.

Guys, here are my thoughts in terms of priorities - consider it a jumping off point for strategizing:

  • Secure this level and take out any other minions of good. This has to happen as soon as we are armed and armored - no delay.
  • Post a watch on the stairs - we can expect that someone may be bringing slop down for us at some point or swapping out guards. We need to be ready. Also, Nostrus, how many hours until we get slopped again?
  • Squeeze Bob for any info he has - guard rotations, a layout, the security set-up for getting between levels i.e. - are there locked gates stopping access to each floor?
  • Figure out how best to use Bob and Grumblejack. Depending on the security, we may need to charm Bob and use him as our 'face' to get doors open - then we blitz the security. Having charm control of both Bob and the ogre (is he an actual ogre or a half-ogre? it will effect what spells will work) might be even better.
  • Figure out what each item on that veil does. There is one that kind of looks like a window to me. If we can slap it on an exterior wall to create an 'insta-exit' then we need to get above ground to an outside wall to bust out. I think we want to avoid trying to head out the front door if it can possibly be helped.

On top of all this - we need to make it happen fast. If we get trapped in this subterranean level and the guards reinforce the stairs - we are cooked.

That's what I've come up with so far. Feel free to debate any aspect of it or add your own thoughts.

Male Human Fighter 5/Hellknight 4 | HP 90/90 | AC 23, T 13, FF 21 | Fort +9, Ref +5, Will +6 | CMD 26 | Init +2 | Perception +12

I'll go ahead and take the shield, I hadn't even thought about marching order - good thinking. And eh, I'd wait until we get an official response on the guard's save and whether Haruk can actually tell us what the blasted thing does.

Female Changeling Hedge Witch/1

"Let me see what I can do about our big boy in the cell next to us." Speaking of the Ogre locked up besides them.

Elis moves towards the cell that Grumblejack is located in.

Is there a way to look into the cell. The map isn't very clear about cell 19, is it walled off or is it something else.

Alexite will happily take a club. He'll do best if he gets an opportunity to flank. And he should be close to the front of the order for Perception shenanigans.

Price straps on the quiver and shoulders the bow before she taps Cain on the chest and pulls the blade he's carrying. With a swift hack, she chops an arm off of the dead guard and kicks it towards Elis. "The big boy in the cage might appreciate a gift... or a snack." She gives the other woman a wink and wipes the bloody blade on her own tattered clothing before handing it back to Cain. "Thanks."

Price looks around the room briefly, assessing what her fellow prisoners are doing, then liberates a club from the pile. "I'll return this in just a moment." She turns to Cain. "Let's button this stinking pit up like a virgin's knickers. Maybe we'll get you a few intimate moments with Porkersly." She waves the club in the direction of the interrogation room and the stairs. As an after-thought she looks over at Gideon, measuring the powerfully built warrior. "You look like you might enjoy a little payback... Want a piece of this action?"

Assuming Cain and/or Gideon are up for it... let's secure the stairs and take out anyone in the interrogation room. Rolls, if needed:

Stealth (sneaking up to & through the door, etc.) 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Perception (listening to locate any other guards, etc.) 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23

FWIW - Price is only borrowing the club until the level is secured. If someone wants it, it is theirs.

Guard Bob's eyes seem to glaze over as Haruk's spell takes hold. Wordlessly, he walks calmly down to the pegs which hold the keys for the other cells and selects one which is slightly larger than the rest. He walks back up to the group's cell and beyond, unlocking Grumblejack's cell before returning to Haruk.

"The quickest way out of the prison would be straight up the stairs, down the hallway and out the main door, but there are two of the lads up there at all times," Bob relays, "Likely to be some off-duty boys up in the barracks too."

"Main gatehouse is usually unlocked, but there's some lads there too. Eventually you'd get to the guard house on the mainland. Couple of boys there and a dog there. I hate dogs," Bob complains.

Grumblejack edges towards the now open door in his cell, regarding the group curiously.

"You not like other little 'un's,'" he says in poor Common, "Grumblejack thinks other little 'un's stupid for not killing Grumblejack yet."

Cain hefts the shield before giving Bob's sword a few test swings. With a grin to Gideon and Price, he nods, "Let's roll." He barks a laugh over his shoulder at the crew heading towards Grumblejack's cell, "If he gets violent, just shout." he finishes the thought in a voice pitched only for Gideon and Price, "... never gotten to kill an ogre before."

Heading with Price (and possibly Gideon?) to the stairs and interrogation room.

Hefting up the other shield and strapping it to his arm, Gideon gives Price a curt nod. "There's a few mementos I want to grab before getting out of this hellhole," he says bitterly, recalling the moment Blackerly branded him. He wanted nothing more than to return the favor. Following suit, he makes his way towards the stairs with the others, giving a half-assed attempt at silencing his footsteps.

Yes, I am still going to attempt to "make friends" with the Ogre. Question though, do our character's know Grumblejack's name?

Elis takes the guards arm offered by Price as she approaches the large creature known as Grumblejack. Speaking in Giant, "Hello big boy. I bring you a gift." Elis tosses the arm to be just in reach of the ogre. Then continuing in Giant, "I have an offer for you. Would you care to listen?"

Elis then asks Bob the Guard, "Do you have the keys to this poor ogre's chains?"

Might be worth asking the big guy what he's in for (before letting him out). It may give you insight into what he wants, which may in turn give you leverage or bait to get him to do what you want.

Price is a little crestfallen - she was looking forward to watching Cain and Gideon go to town on the sergeant.

Ah, well, it can't all be fun.

When they are well clear of the stairs, she whispers to the warriors. "I can keep watch here if you gentlemen want to see to it that our little sewing circle forms a plan and is ready to move out."

I'm amenable to another plan. I'm just thinking we don't want to head upstairs until we are ready to rock&roll but we do want to keep an eye on it and Price is being pretty stealthy at the moment.

Nostrus - is there a good dark hiding spot near the stairs? Maybe where it meets the South wall?

Cain shrugs as he leans his massive frame against the wall, running a thumb along a series of nicks in the big shields' edge. "Nah. They can handle that. I'll stick around in case there are any surprises." He looks back down to where the other group is dealign with the ogre, "They'll shout if they need us."

His impatience is obvious to Gideon and Price in the way he constantly messes with the shield, Sure as Hell wish they'd hurry, though.

Not to speak for the group here, so guys feel free to add your own amendments... but I think we were waiting for the results of the Grumblejack situation, a bit more information on Haruk's veil so we can put it to good use, and we'll probably want more specifics from Bob on the prison's layout with an eye to a less 'front-door' way out and ways to cause mayhem or distractions if they are needed.

Price nods to Gideon. "Do come if you hear a struggle, but the screaming won't be from us... I wouldn't want you to miss out on the fun." Price turns her attention to the wrapped leather club. She examines it for a way to unwrap it.

Infernal DM - can I unwrap the club to convert it from a non-lethal weapon to a lethal one?

Dark Archive

Okay, Elis can outline a plan to Grumblejack who is now amenable to listening. At this point, Grumblejack can still become an enemy but it is far more likely that the outcome will be that he remains friendly.

Haruk's veil is a veil of useful items. Each 'design' is actually a patch that can be removed from the veil. They are one-shot only in that they cannot be re-attached to the veil.

The only way out of the prison without risking a treacherous swim through the jagged rocks in the water surrounding the prison is the way that he has already outlined. He does let slip that if too much mayhem is caused, it might draw the Warden who he admits is a wizard of some kind.

No way to convert the club, it's a club of stiff leather used for subduing inmates. If they need to inflict lethal damage then out comes the longswords. However, Haruk's veil has the following:

• 2 daggers
• Bullseye lantern (full, lit and shuttered)
• Hempen rope (50-foot coil)
• Sack full of common clothes in the PCs sizes
• Thieves Tools, Masterwork
• Window (2 ft. by 4 ft., up to 2 ft. deep)
• Potion of cure light wounds
• 100 gold pieces
• Unholy Symbol of Asmodeus (silver)

Remember that once you remove it from the veil, it cannot be put back on.

If nothing else, Haruk hasn't had a chance to tell us about his encounter, right?

I was also under the impression that Price, Cain, and Gideon were simply securing the bottom of the steps. Rushing up in a small group seems brash. It'd be good to move as a group.

So, for the window in the veil, that can be used to create a window in a wall? So all we'd need to do to find a different exit would be to find an external wall to the main level of the building?

Male Human Sorcerer(Infneral) 5/Infernal Disciple 3

Haruk informs the others of the items the veil posseses as well as recounting his conversation with the mysterious beauty. "Sounds like we have an unknown benefactor awaiting us upon our escape."
