BACKGROUND
Therin Schrade’s mysterious death at Citadel Vraid did nothing to quell his son’s desire to follow his footsteps. Nor did the death of that son, Armon Schrade, at the hands of a Shoanti insurrectionist stop his own son from joining the Order of the Nail when he came of age. Where the hellish black armor of the Hellknights struck fear into the hearts of many, in Gideon it only inspired awe. He admired his father in spite of his stern parenting, and had no qualms with continuing what he considered a family tradition. As a young man, he was naive enough to believe that his resolve alone would be enough to prepare him for the Order’s training.

But life as an armiger was more than Gideon could possibly prepare for. He underwent day after day of gruelling combat drills, forced marches, and countless other exercises devised to instill him with discipline. It was a hard road, but Gideon learned from the Order what his father could not teach him; the importance of law and order, and why they had to be upheld at any cost. He learned why Cheliax acknowledged devils as such efficient tools, and why they went through such lengths to control them. Gideon endured those years of appropriately hellish training before finally being ready to face his Trial.

Gideon knew that several of the armigers he had considered close acquaintances had met their ends during their own Trials. When his turn came, he learned why - from the depths of Hell the order had summoned a barbazu that he would have to kill in single combat. The battle that followed was a desperate struggle, one that left Gideon scarred for the rest of his life. He applied everything he had learned, putting forth every bit of strength he had and then some, and in the end walked away drenched in blood and afflicted with a serious case of the devil chills - but he had won. It was at the conclusion of this trial that Gideon first met eyes with Maidrayne Vox, the Hellknight who would guide him on the path ahead.

As a full-fledged Hellknight, Gideon excelled in ways he could not fully demonstrate when he was a mere armiger. In the field, he proved that he was not only a skillful warrior, but that he had exceptional leadership characteristics. Like his father before him, he was stern but understanding, pragmatic yet unyielding, and though he would never dare show it while in uniform, he had a capacity for kindness. These traits did not go unnoticed by the Mistress of Blades, who was more than partially responsible for his subsequent promotions. Having taken on the mantle as a commander, Gideon had more opportunities to speak to Maidrayne in person. He initially found the centaur strange and difficult to speak to, but as time went by he began to realize that she was different from the typical Hellknight. Gideon found a kindred spirit in her - someone who valued honor over debauchery, reason over blind devotion. He began to look to her as a role model of sorts; an individual that the Order as a whole should reflect.

Several years passed before Gideon ascended to the rank of Paralictor. He had long grown comfortable with his role, patrolling the plains of Varisia in search of any potential threats to the order established in Korvosa. The Paralictor was away on such a mission when the crisis in Korvosa came to a head. The Hellknights were powerless however to stop the blood veil plague, or the chaos that followed when Queen Ileosa took the reins of leadership. In the wake of the plague Gideon and his men were forced to abandon the city, retreating to Citadel Vraid to await reinforcements. However, abandoning Korvosa did not feel entirely right to the commander. It was at the discretion of Maidrayne that he received authorization to execute his own mission - to restore order to the city at any cost. With only a handful of inexperienced men at his disposal however, he would need to find other allies...
