This the is the OOC discussion thread.

I've added a link to the roll20 page at the top. Everyone please go there and sign in, so I can get tokens set up for you. Without a token, you won't be able to see anything. If there is a different picture you want me to use than your messageboard avatar, please post a link here. I will be doing a more thorough review of everyone's character shortly, and addressing any issues or nitpicks.

I found a cool map which I want to use. I think I'm going to the Romans be a mixture of ethnicity, Saxons, Gauls and other from around the Empire. It would make sense for the Saxons to be part of the Empire, they are Christian and lived there. Like the Welsh and Irish celts, they have a distinct culture but are Christian and subject to Rome. I'm putting it on Roll20.

Kellan - You were probably an oar slave on one of the ships in Jarl Lothbrok's army. Perhaps your captain brought you to the fight because he knew of your spirit powers?

Will - I've created a Celtic language with various mutually intelligible dialects for the Irish, Welsh and Scots. That would be your native tongue. I'll give you Norse for free to make things easier, and since it fits your background. Also you need to specify which kind of humans your favored enemy works against. Northmen, Romans, Celts?

@DM

That’s cool fine for me. I would not say spirit powers, but knowledge about herbs and healing, which would be invaluable in times of war.

About token, if this image can be used it will better, if not, just keep the same as the avatar.

About the ability status:
Kellan is 39 years old, which puts him slightly above adult age.
The original ability scores are:

STR – 11 (-1 due age) 10
DEX – 13 (-1 due age) 12
CON – 13 (-1 due age) 12
INT – 13 (+1 due age) 14
WIS – 15 (+1 due age +2 Human) 18
CHA – 13 (+1 due age) 14

Traits:
Earning Your Freedom
Privileged Slave

Feats:
Combat Casting
Toughness

That seems okay to you?

No age modifiers to ability scores please. Also if you want him to be that old that's fine, but he will be considered an old man by most people.

Jelani, the link to Discussion in your selection post doesn't work. It will delay a newbie here.

cheers

EDIT

very cool map. Couldn't find the legend. What are the triangles and colored circles? Green = Scots, Red = Romans, Blue = Norse?

What Google translate languages will proxy Roman, Celtic, etc? Thanks Thron. Should put that in the Campaign Info for us short-term memory types.

Can you open Gameplay, so we can dot? thanks

From the recruitment thread, for reference:

Latin - Spoken by Romans from the western parts of the Empire. Includes written alphabet. Educated Romans will also speak Greek. (Represented by Google Translate Latin)

Greek - Spoken by Romans from the eastern Empire. Greek is the common and official language of the Second Roman Empire by this point. Includes written alphabet. (Represented by Google Translate Greek)

Proto-German - Spoken by Frisians, Sachsens and the other peoples of North and Northwestern modern day Germany. (Represented by Google Translate German)

Norse - This would include Danish, norse, geatish, etc. All the nothern european Germanic languages spoken by the people who we consider "vikings" now. Includes runic alphabet, though its rarely used or known. (Represented by Google Translate Icelandic)

Celtic - This group of languages is spoken by the Scots, Irish and Bretons. (Represented by Google Translate Irish)

Okay. I'll update in some hours.

I'm adding the languages to campaign info tab, and setting up tokens for Sonja and Kellan.

There is a Key in the bottom left of the map. You may have to zoom out all the way. Green is roman celts/scots, purple romans, red romano-saxons, blue is northmen.

Gameplay is live.

Will here. So I can't figure out how to change the display name to the new character. Angor was a character from another game that is no longer running.

So I know Celtic and Norse right? Celtic because of the area and Norse because he works with the Northmen?

Romans as favored.

Actually screw it, I will do that right now. :)

Edit: Found a neat looking pic :) (its a dwarf) but it made me wonder, how common was blond hair back then? If they are not like the Japanese or something, then I will change his hair color to be a ruddy blond, with strands of grey starting to show.

Where'd the other map go? Anyway to get it linked somewhere?

Do we want to treat Norse as Common for us, so we don't have Icelandic all the time when our characters speak to each other? Or do you want to spoiler everything?

Oh. I didn't realize that there was another map, and I can't seem to get roll20 to work, all I see is a blank black screen :/

The other map is not being displayed to PCs, since it's not relevant to your cell. I will switch back to it later after the prison escape.

Bjorn and Will I need to set up your tokens before you'll be able to see. I can do that after work.

Norse is your common yes, no need to spoiler everything. I might throw in some icelandic words in speech for flavor, but I don't want it to be too annoying.

Blonde hair is totally appropriate, btw. I'm trying to get one token set up before I leave for work, we'll see how fast the image uploads.

Bjorn should be set up with sight now, you guys are on the right side of the map if you zoom out.

Okay, off to work, but everyone should have a token and sight now. Let me know if I messed something up.

I remember now that WotW gives all the player characters brands. Bjorn reminded me. Did I miss that description in the recruitment or Gameplay, Jelani?

If we all have brands, what and where are they?

thanks

I didn't want to regurgitate the whole intro I put in recruitment into gameplay, so I just copied over the last bit. The branding came earlier.

"In the empire of Rome, many crimes may send you to the dungeons, but the sentence has but one meaning. You are wicked and irredeemable. Each of you received the same greeting when you arrived in the fort called Regulbium. You were held down by rough hands and painfully branded upon the arm with an X. The mark signifies ‘criminal’ and the painful scar is indelible proof that each of you has betrayed the great and eternal love of Christ and his chosen mortal vassals."

Male Shaman HP 11 | AC:17 | T:11 | FF:16 | CMB +0 | CMD:11 | Fort:+0 | Ref:+1 | Will:+6 | Init:+1| Spellcraft +6 | Pers +8 | Surv +8 |

So, Kellan has a strong accent, and I was planning to write all my narratives using it, not only the character speech.

But it's better ask first. Should it? I don't want to bore the players and makes it harder to read it.

Here is an example of how things would be done:

Old Devie’s path an’ mine crossed more times ’n I’m comfy mem’ryin’, an’ after I’m died, no sayin’ what that fangy devil won’t try an’ do to me . . . so gimme some mutton an’ I’ll tell you ’bout our first meetin’. A fat joocesome slice, nay, none o’ your burnt wafery off’rin’s . . .

Adam, my bro, an’ Pa ’n’ me was trekkin’ back from Kaahono Market on miry roads with a busted cart axle in draggly clothesies. Evenin’ catched us up early, so we tented on the southly bank o’ Sloosha’s Crossin’, ’cos Waipio River was furyin’ with days o’ hard rain an’ swollen by a spring tide. Sloosha’s was friendsome ground tho’ marshy, no un lived in the Waipio Valley ’cept for a mil’yun birds, that’s why we din’t camo our tent or pull cart or nothin’. Pa sent me huntin’ for tinder ’n’ firewood while he ’n’ Adam tented up.

Mystic 5/Investigator 5 | HP 33/33 | AC 19, Touch 12, FF 15 | CMB +4 | CMD 18 | Fort +3, Ref +7, Will +8 | Init +4 | Perception +10 (+12 vs Traps) | Extracts: 1st 5/5 2nd 3/3

I would keep it to speech unless you translate cause I can't understand some of it and don't want to miss something important.

It's perfectly clear to me, but I'd go with the majority.

"I've crossed paths with the devil more times than I'm comfortable remembering. After I die, I worry what he will do to me. Give me a thick juicy slice of mutton and I'll tell you about our first encounter."

"My brother Adam, my father and I were returning home from Kaahono Market on muddy back roads with a broken cart axle, and our clothes ragged and dirty. Night fell, so we chose to camp on the southern bank of the Waipo River at Sloosha's Crossing. It had been raining hard and river was swollen nearly out of its banks. Sloosha's crossing was on stable though marshy ground, where no one lived except for the many birds. That's why we didn't bother to camouflage our tent or hide our cart. My father sent me to gather firewood, while he and Adam set up the camp"

Hey,

I'll just eat something and post. Maybe in the next couple of hours! :D

While I'm thinking about it I want to make a post about tone expectations and boundaries in this game. Especially since we're playing what would normally be an "evil" game.

I want this to be gritty and dark, because that's how I roll. However, I still want the PCs to be somewhat honorable, and the (at least sometimes) likeable protagonists. Therefore, I ask that nobody perpetrate any sexual violence, or any kind of violence towards children. That is something I want to reserve for the "bad guys" and plan to keep off screen as much as possible. While such things were a reality of the time, I find them pretty unpleasant and don't want to deal with them in game too much. Other than that, as far as I'm concerned anything goes.

If anyone else has something that they'd strongly prefer to avoid in game, please let us know here. We're all here to have fun (I hope) and I don't want anyone getting hurt or offended.

@Bjorn

Óbjarni missed his grapple by one. If you aid another, the guard would be grappled in the surprise round. Then in Round 1, Óbjarni could move him out of the doorway, in order for us to get to the second guard.

Sonja, Kellan and Will can you put your stats in your gender or race line of your alias, like Objarni and Bjorn, please? Thanks.

No problem here :)

I am actually going for a more of an honorable front line leader, strong and aiming to set an example by being on the front lines, with his honor and glory being increased as others look up to him. So he won't be doing any of that :)
Plus I got behind a bit, I'll catch up ^-^

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Kellan - When you write narrative, can you please use plain English? It's fine to use Kellan's accent for his thoughts and speech, but it creates extra work for me during round updates, and makes the posts harder for other players to understand, if you write the whole thing that way. Hope it's not too much trouble, thanks.

I agree with you.

I’m posting the plain version in a spoiler, but I created a nightmare for myself.
When I image the accent, it sound easier and cleaner. However as soon I try to write it down it becomes ugly and hard to understand.

Anyway, I was thinking about it myself. The narrative I’ll keep in English and make the accent easier to understand in his speech.
