Since it was specifically asked, let's keep off topic and general chit chat to the discussion thread :).

Humorous and inane comments are not only welcome, but encouraged hehe.

As for mapping, I'll see how I go before I recruit one of you :).

The pdf comes with a second file that has maps and images for use with players in mind (no numbering etc). It actually took me less than five minutes to do the map in the end. Much better than I thought.

Photobucket has changed since I used it two years ago. It will do for the moment, but I'll look into an alternate that can maybe provide larger image on screen.

Good, I'm glad comments are welcome. This is a fun, social game, right? :)

I have that second file of course.

I do turn recaps for the games I GM and use Google sites to host turns, pics, etc. so let me know if you need help.

Always trying to free up the GM so he can dedicate himself to running the game. :)

Really curious how combat is going to work out. I am so used to very tactical combat. I am all for theatre of the mind combat too. Very curious

I also wonder how my Fleet feat will work out with theatre of the mind. Will have to remind myself I am faster.

Thanks for the images. Will help when we have too many options!

Given how easily I could put those maps together, combat will be map based too.

Awesome. Thanks again for doing this, and or being so active. My other game is quite a bit slower. Which isn't really a big deal.. Just excited to see how we progress.

So I have been playing around with other ways for my sharrin to sound unique. Does my use of multiple words while speaking telepathically look ok to everyone? I will avoid using it too often, but instances where multiple complicated thoughts can be joined together I thought it would work. Kinda like those crazy German words that mean whole concepts.

I can back down from it it's a bit too much.

I like it so keep at it from my perspective.

A more unique/real character makes for a better/livelier the game.

See what I did there. :)

Got back from camping a bit early (racing a storm front :). )

Pretty tired now so not updating tonight,
This will give the other two a chance to post with reaquainting themselves with their gear. I may drop in a post a bit later tonight detailing what else is there but depends on if I crash or not (as in go to sleep, for those not in the know of Australian Vernacular)

Haven't heard from Tekumsah for five days. He's been quiet on all his aliases too, but seemingly posted in a recruitment thread yesterday. I'll give him another day to put a post together before I get too concerned.

PbP only works if players post daily! If you need more time, letting everyone know is important so we can work around it.

More PbP die through lack of communication than any other reason.

Cheers

True but the likelihood of that happening here is slim.

This game has a committed GM who writes well and is very interested in the game; it has an 'outline' (too many games die out because the GM goes homebrew and then runs out of ideas/energy), and it has at least a couple of players that are excited/posting.

You may have to go through a couple of players until you find the right group mix but the game will go on as long as the GM wants it to.

That said, we as players need to start posting off each others' posts. A good post should a) involve other PCs/NPCs and/or b) move the game along (hopefully both).

No more ranting. :)

Game on!

(Abandoned Game/Character)

I have no plans on slowing my communication. Just hoping the same for everyone else. I sure don't want this to die.

I think I have this issue with playing at the table, I sometimes forget about other characters. Not in terms of who needs what buff, but more in a social encounter type way. I will make sure to put some effort into it here. It is much easier when you have time to think and actually converse more in character.

Ok, so Loup Blanc hasn't posted in way too long, despite continuing to advance his application to another PbP at least once.

PbP can't afford that sort of drop in posting, especially at start up.

I have another player who's keen to jump in and replace Tekumsah with a character of his own. We can write him in easily enough and I'll sort out what happens to our Vesk.

I will PM loup and inform him of the decision.

I apologise if this seems draconian, but with only four players we can't afford the drop off without any form of advance notice or contact at all. If it hadn't been that he had posted once or twice in other threads in the mean time, I'd have given him more time, however I think this points to something that will be an ongoing issue.

(Abandoned Game/Character)

That makes sense. If we lose people to inactivity this early its not a good sign. I would rather get a solid group and keep it going for a long as possible.

Do what you need to do to keep it alive.

Totally understandable and supported on my end (not that you need support). :)

You should consider making a five PC party. I have found that this is best, especially given that there will always be someone with an 'excused absence' (vacation, etc.) and the game can go on with four out of five but three out of four is a little more wobbly.

Hoping over to the gameplay thread to post...

Our new player will need the weekend to get themselves up to speed. I'll run Tekumsah if needed before then.

(Abandoned Game/Character)

Well sad to see someone go, but I am curious about the new player!

Welcome aboard.. I hope...

Ok, to,facilitate a smooth transition and allow Gorn to get into the game, I've introduced him in the game thread.

Gorn and the naked lady have just come from room number three on the little corridor map. They emerged from stasis pods just as the rest of you did but ended up having a short scrap with the Baghra that were released with them. They knocked them out, with the lady insisting they not kill the sentients if possible.

They've only just managed to open the door and Gorn found his gear inside a locker in the room. The woman, as indicated in the thread, has no gear as such.

Welcome Gorn Steelbreaker!

Ok, some notes on combat if this gets to that.

Normally when I map I have a grid reference for folks to use, but I can't do that using the iPad.

So for positioning, we'll use characters and enemies as reference points.
Each character has 8squares surrounding them. These are going to be numbered from the southern most grid in a clockwise direction.

So if you wanted to attack enemy k1 in the map I've posted so far, you would say "I mov to engage k1, travelling to square 3.

If you want to move in the map but not engage an enemy, just let me know a grid refence in the same way we do for graphing, (across 2, up 3). This tells me the final square you want to be in and I'll assume you travel the shortest rout to that point.

I'll create a little map as an example of this and link it here soon.

Also, given how PbP works, when we roll initiatiatives I group players based on where enemies fall in the initiative order.

Eg, lets assume the initiatives work out Twitch, Gorm, Trellik, baddies, Tuk'Yik, Andretta,

This would make
Group 1 - Twitch, Gorm, Trellik
Group 2 - Baddies
Group 3- Tuk and Andretta
Once in a group, you go in order of posting, rather than initiative score. It makes it easier for players to follow what's going on.

It sounds complex, but will actually work out fairly easy.

example map

In the example map, Gorm and Twitch have come across an enemy (e).

Gorm engages the guy in melee. He states he's moving to square 3 of e

Twitch wants a clearer line of site to shoot now form is in front, so he says he will move down 3 left 3 so he's now against the wall on the left hand side. It's assumed he moved in a line directly there rather than the weird L shape.

map with new positions

It sounds like you'll be using 'block initiative', which is great.

One thing I would add (which you may be doing) is that once the 'baddies' go then both Group 3 (say for Round 1) and Group 1 (for Round 2) be allowed to post/act.

I think it also makes sense for you to roll initiatives for everyone at the start of the fight.

I will do initiatives for folks in future fights. This one I just went with letting folks do their own thing.

And yes, letting the last group post and then the first group makes for much faster play. It will all work out relatively well.

Have you tried Google Sites?

I'll try something different.

Is roll20 an option?

I've had good luck with that.

Whatever option I go I'll have to learn how to use them. I just made a roll20 account easily enough, but will need to learn how to upload and share images from it.

Seems it has better mapping tools for me to use though :)

(Abandoned Game/Character)

Roll20 is pretty great. It allows us to move characters if done right. There are plenty of tutorial pages and videos online on how to handle it. Plus its free, which is nice.

I am not sure how it will work out from an iPad, but with the browser in the iPad, it should be fine, if not a bit tricky. Any solution will be a bit tricky though.

The other thing I'm looking at is Flickr. I'm not sure if that's going to cause the same issues though.

Heading off in an hour so won't get to look at this until about five hours. Which isn't that big a deal given our time differences. Hopefully we'll have a map, options n that works by tonight (Austime)

Either way, I'll update the game thread tonight.

I know some GMs only want you to roll what was specifically asked for?

Do we just 'write up' and roll whatever is appropriate?

You'll note K2 didn't use the attack I rolled for it after finding it had failed it's will save. In future I may just roll dice at home and post results. It makes it easier for me to run the combats. Depends if folks are happy with that though

I'm old school and used to play this via email (PBEM) and I always had to roll without the players seeing what I rolled (no dice rollers back then).

I found it really hard to 'lay down the pain' on my players because as I wanted them 'to win', to tell the story. Therefore, any criticals I would roll again, any failed saving throws with dire consequences, I would roll again.

Now it is so much better with dice rollers because the rolls are out in the open and if the enemies' score a critical or a PCs misses a saving throw then so be it.

I'm OK with whatever you do. I trust you are also here for the story, which may involved a PC's death.

(Abandoned Game/Character)

I would prefer you roll on the forum, but if you wanted to roll behind the scenes that is ok with me too. Will leave it up to you.

I looked up Nonlethal in game. It looks like it is a special property of some weapons. This includes unarmed strikes, stun guns, some grenades, etc.

So I am not sure if there is a way to do choose to do non-lethal without one of those specific types of weapons.

I know its GM discretion, of course, but I would assume its not possible, since its so specifically laid out as a weapon type.

I checked that as well.

It turns out that you can do nonlethal damage with a weapon that normally deals lethal damage (AND VICEVERSA) but you take a -4 on the attack roll.

Interesting...

So you could do non-lethal with a gun, just by taking -4?

I usually flavour non lethal damage as shooting for the kneecaps or other body parts that can be injured without killing.

I'm actually finding it more difficult to figure out how to flavour stun pistols harming undead or constructs by just aiming at vulnerable bits (which is presumably what the -4 is supposed to reflect)

Yeah, just shoot for a flesh wound.

It's no more 'unbelievable' than doing non-lethal damage with a bludgeoning weapon.

No probs on the dice rolls, I'll keep them public :). It is a speed issue for me more than anything else, but I'll get better at it as we go

As for non lethal, as stated it's more about hitting less vital areas, or maybe blasting the panel off the wall above its head that then knocks it out
