DM RyckyRych |
Haldor strikes the gnoll, who yelps in pain and anguish but still stands! The cleric then heals the monk, who was barely conscious!
Varis and Fizz!
Fizz -2
Varis -25
Red Pack Lord -46
The blankets are difficult terrain. I moved Fergus back a square since I don't think he had enough movement left.
Fizzlebomb |
hopping in sight and then back out of sight, Fizz tries to burn red pack lord
FireBolt range 120ft
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
damage: 2d10 ⇒ (5, 7) = 12
Varis, back out of there or do that dance of avoidance
DM RyckyRych |
Fizz manages to finish off the gnoll! The other three gnolls growl in annoyance!
Varis!
Varis Starflower |
Attacking the one in front of him
sword: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24 dmg: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
sword: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22 dmg: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Then Varis Dodges as a bonus action (last ki point spend)
DM RyckyRych |
Varis nearly takes out the spear-wielding gnoll! Using a reaction the gnoll attacks back, using two hands on his spear to do so!
Spear: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20 or Spear: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12 for Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
The pack lord that remains attacks the offending monk!
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21 or Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16 for Damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 or Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7 for Damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
The spear gnoll also tries his luck with the dodging Varis!
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22 or Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10 for Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Meanwhile the bowgnoll fires at Fergus!
Bow: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 for Arrow: 1d8 + 1 - 3 ⇒ (2) + 1 - 3 = 0
All of the efforts fail to find their marks!
Party up!
Fizz -2
Varis -25
Spear Gnoll -19
Fizzlebomb |
Seeing the spear wielding gnoll on his last leg (hopefully)
Fizz uses his wand to fire one missile at the spear wielder, and the other two missiles at the green gnoll
3 darts (1 or multiple targets)
damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
DM RyckyRych |
The plan works well as the first missile eliminates the spear-toting gnoll!
All but Fizz may act!
Fizz -2
Varis -25
Green -7
Varis Starflower |
Against Green
sword: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8 dmg: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
sword: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27 dmg: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
as bonus
fist: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20 dmg: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
crit dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 2
DM RyckyRych |
Varis connects twice, causing the gnoll to bare his teeth at the monk in anger!
Fergus and Haldor!
Fizz -2
Varis -25
Green -19
Haldor Dagsson |
Haldor steps out from cover, casts Sacred Flame (Dex save 15) on the green guy, then retreats behind the wall again.
Fergus McDammitson |
Against Green, if he's still standing:
First Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16 for Damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Second Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28 for Damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15 plus Crit Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 8
If Green is dead from Haldor's attack or dies from Fergus's first attack, Fergus uses his last 5 feet of movement to move southeast next to the red/brown guy and uses his second attack on red/brown.
DM RyckyRych |
Dex Save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Damage: 2d8 ⇒ (8, 8) = 16 Of course.
Haldor's spell and Fergus' combo of attacks fell the gnoll! Backed into a corner, the remaining gnoll shows no signs of backing down. He drops his bow, graps his spear with both hands, and stabs at Fergus!
Spear: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23 for Damage: 1d8 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (8) + 2 - 3 = 7
The gnoll gets in a lucky hit, finding a weak spot in the paladin's new clothes! The party then quickly dispatches the remaining combatant! Maybe he gets lucky and survives with his AC 15 and 22 HP to get in another shot but why waste time.
Combat Over!
Among the gnolls’ personal effects is a letter outlining their clans’ proposed deal with Sarshan. It has only sketchy details of the assignment and terms, but Sarshan speaks of "a great need for troops ready to take advantage of unforseen disaster."
Each of the gnolls wears a symbol of a bloody, serrated fang in a prominent place on their armor.
Also found in the room is 100 gp in coins. Their weapons and armor are of good quality but the stench from the gnolls ruins any value.
Next move? Healing? Anything else?
DM RyckyRych |
Varis -11
Fergus -7
The choice is yours! I'll wait for you guys to decide, let me know when you come up with a plan.
Fizzlebomb |
Hearing Fergus describe the vibrations he felt from the tiles in the middle, Fizz moves over to them. Does he also feel the vibrations? Can he see a switch or something in the room that might do something for the vibrations in the floor?
DM RyckyRych |
Yes he does but no switch is found. With a little arcane dabbling and experimentation you can figure out that you can control your height and movement with your willpower and special movement. You can travel up to the next floor this way at 15' per round.
Fergus McDammitson |
Ooh this looks fun. But should we go up or clear the rest of the floor?
Fergus McDammitson |
Any idea what's behind these other doors?
Fergus will try to see if he can tell anything about what's on the other side of the door next to him.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 In my professional opinion, this appears to be a door. Fergus seems unsure. I think.
So will Haldor, for the door next to him. Jacob is in final exams this week so I'll just roll for him on Perception.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
DM RyckyRych |
The party spreads out, each checking a door.
DM RyckyRych |
Is that the plan? You are going to forgo these doors and go upstairs instead? If I get a second to agree to going upstairs I'll move us that way.
DM RyckyRych |
Its not. :)
The party elects to check the remaining doors on the first level.
The rooms marked as "5" :Dark experiments realized in the foundry are first carried out here. The various laboratories feature a wealth of alchemical equipment and reagents, ritual components, dead creatures in jars of clear oil, vials of brightly colored powders and viscous fluids, and other experimental gear.
The room marked as "7" :These chambers are the residences of the sages who labor to perfect Sarshan’s vile experiments. Each chamber has four beds and is occupied by two obviously non-combatant sages, all of which are hiding under beds. You determine they are no threat to you.
I'm assuming you'll leave Room #8 alone since it leads outside.
The party then goes to investigate the next level up. Moved you to the next level, which is located on the top-right part of the Roll20 map.
Dim light from globes of gray glass casts faint shadows throughout a dark garden. Though the trees and other foliage here appear healthy and luxurious, the leaves, stems, and flowers of these plants are sickly shades of dark blue, gray, and black. Along the south wall of this chamber stands a stone arch identical to the teleportation portals you’ve seen before.
Fizzlebomb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Haldor: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Varis: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Everyone but Varis is able to hear a hissing sound that precedes a cloud of insects suddenly boiling up from the shadows, swarming to attack. At the same time, what appeared to be a mass of mottled leaves rises up to reveal itself as an enormous toad, which has viscous black fluid dripping from its mouth as it lurches toward you!
Surprise Round! All but Varis will be able to act.
Fizzlebomb: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (15) + 0 = 15
Haldor: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (4) + 0 = 4
Varis: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Toad: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18
Swarm: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
The toad reacts, leaping toward 1d4 ⇒ 3 Haldor!
Bite: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20 for Piercing: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12 plus Poison: 1d10 ⇒ 5 and you are grappled and restrained! DC 13 Athletics or Acrobatics to escape as an action in your turn, if you want to try.
The swarms then move to annoy the others!
Bites vs Fergus: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Bites vs Fizz: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22 for Piercing: 4d4 ⇒ (4, 3, 1, 4) = 12
Bites vs Varis: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18 for Piercing: 4d4 ⇒ (1, 2, 2, 3) = 8
Two of the companions start to be eaten alive!
Party is up! Fizz, Haldor and Fergus act in the surprise round then Varis is up for Round 1 so you can go whenever.

Second Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9 for Damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

Haldor manages to escape from the grasp of the toad! Fergus manages to scatter some of the swarm with one of his swings, however his sword does not seem to be as effective as he'd like.

Assuming the first attack took out the RED swarm, second attack is against the BLUE swarm (otherwise, against RED again):
Second Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20 for Damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Too bad we can't format messageboard text color.

Swarm!: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Varis manages to fend off the biting beetles!
Bite vs Haldor: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Haldor evades the toad! Another tremor strikes the building, though this one is less severe than the previous ones and is barely noticeable during the heat of combat!

Shocking Grasp range touch

Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
lightning damage: 2d8 ⇒ (3, 2) = 5
Haldor Dagsson |
Let's try this again. Versus the toad:
Hammer: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
You had the toad's (miniscule -4) damage listed earlier but it's gone from the latest post. Inadvertent omission or did it heal itself?
Fergus McDammitson |
Question. The PHB says, "You can make an opportunity attack when a hostile creature that you can see moves out of your reach." The swarm has a reach of ZERO, right? So it can't do an AoO if I move away, right? Am I reading that correctly?
Versus the Toad:
First Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22 for Damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Second Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10 for Damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
DM RyckyRych |
Well, after I initially placed the swarms on top of you I didn't bother moving them again since it was easier to see the swarms after you moved. I just assumed each turn that this was happening and ignored AoOs if you moved since it helped me see. Otherwise, yes, I read it the same way. I just took it that you were still in the same square UNLESS you wanted to move away, which now you do.
Assuming you still want to go for the toad,
AoO: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19 That was close!
Fizz shocks more beetles! Haldor bashes the toad! Fergus then slices it once!
Varis!
Fizz -14
Varis -19
Fergus -7
Haldor -17
Yellow -14
Toad -25
Fergus McDammitson |
Sorry, my bad. I never saw that the swarm was initially placed on top of me. I don't think I noticed the swarm until I had already moved, and I think I assumed they had spawned after we started combat.
It was not my intent to provoke. But it's clear that I would have provoked earlier when I moved out of the same square, so we ended up in the same place regardless of the timing of the AoO (i.e., when I first moved away or now). So let's say that I did go ahead and move away from the spawn to attack the Toad.
Clear as mud?
DM RyckyRych |
No worries, if I said something in the first round you likely just would have cancelled the movement. NBD.
Varis Starflower |
against Yellow
sword: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24 dmg: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
sword: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13 dmg: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
as bonus
fist: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15 dmg: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
DM RyckyRych |
Varis exterminates the remaining pests!
Bite vs Haldor: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
The toad once again misses its target! The party then quickly eliminates the lone threat!
Combat over!
Of course, I just realized I screwed up the fight, sorta. You were floating in mid-air the entire time but nothing says you can't fight there in the adventure. I'll put you on solid ground now but feel free to place yourselves.
Before you can catch your breath, a sudden shout comes from below. Through the open floor, you see shadar-kai guards coming through the main doors.
What are you doing now, adventurers?

The men look to be getting ready to come up the levitation lift, like you had done. You also here sounds of more men coming up from each of the four towers. You determine that you will be vastly outnumbered and have nowhere to go.
Any healing or other prep?
Fergus McDammitson |
Going to use my last hit die:
Hit Die: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Methinks we shouldst run for it.
Can we continue going up the levitation thingy?
