Etienne concentrates on the flying figure of Li Shuo, and send him Fortune in the hopes of rescuing Grynt, and salvaging this whole fiasco.

GM_Starson |

Because this is such a important roll, I'll let Li roll it (Since my dice hate you guys. It's a miss chance, which is sadly not helped by fortune, so you have to roll a 50+ on a d100. Because it's grappling Grynt, it will not be able to take a AOO on Li, so Li can fly down to attempt the touch without provoking... yet.

GM_Starson |

Moving to locate him would just determine what square he's in, which you already knew. Sadly that won't help.

GM_Starson |

He attacks again and then take a 5' step back

Sorry if I didn't make it clear, your grappled as well, so no 5 foot step or attacking with anything more than a light weapon.

Point of order -- when grappled, you can use a one-handed weapon as well. grappled condition

GM_Starson |

Yup, your right! So that swing would be good, and hit, just no five foot step. Still need a action from Li though.

your right, your actual hp is -42 since nat missed with her healing spell. I'll allow you a reroll even if you don't have a folio since nat is willing to slip her folio under the table for you.

No worries, GM, you've been fair...without the healing, I'd be at -43 though (-13 HP)...that'd make my CON DC 23 and I couldn't hit that even with a nat 20 so no need for a re-roll. Thanks Nat but keep your re-roll as this encounter isn't over and you might need it...
Grynt's mind races...the visions flashing before him...freeing Guaril, making what he thought had been a clean escape from the beast then being struck while climbing to the ship...all hazy since then...
He sees...a blur trying to reach him...Nat? He struggles to reach back...but fails as the beast has him secure...another blur...Li? He feels the man's arms pull him free from the beast's deadly grasp...but then he finds himself floating amidst blood...Is it my own? Where's Li? The beast must have the brave man now...no!!!
Grynt thinks he sees Nat again struggling to reach him...he reaches back, thinking he can reach her...but he cannot...Thank you my friends for trying...at least I might've helped save Guaril... As Nat's face starts to fade, another face superimposes itself over her's...Mom? I'm coming home...I am Grynt...
Thanks for running this GM. Enjoyed playing with everyone. Thanks for your efforts in trying to save Grynt!

Brady gives a brief glance over the gunwale... that was a lot of activity down there. They got Gauril out, but where was Grynt? Nat... Li... accounted for, but the other half-orc hadn't surfaced yet.
I hope that doesn't mean what I think it does. Damn these VCs and their missions! We almost lost an agent on my last one. Why can't they send us with the proper resources!
He doesn't have any more time to worry about that now, though. He was no healer, his muscles were his strength, and he was going to use them. Gauril still needed to be attended to, and he was the object of their quest at the moment.
Brady puts his back into dragging the man over to the main mast, where hopefully he'd be safe from any more of the devilfish. He scans the sky to be sure that the flying sorceress was gone.
Not sure what the action economy is for this, nor if Brady needs to make any rolls. He's dragging Gauril 15' as shown on the map. If he has actions remaining, he'll continue on towards the other side to try to help the magus.

![]() |

"I'll try to get Guaril back on his feet! If the magus is already below the waves, he might be a lost cause." Etienne moves to Guaril, drawing a wand as he goes and casts [i]cure light wounds[/] on him.

Don't have time to look at rules atm, but being unconscious underwater is rough. I'm jumping ahead in order, but on my turn I'll do above. Just not sure I'll be able to post later today.

GM_Starson |

So no one is even going to try and save him?
To be fair, one guy is already dead trying to save someone, and your best fighter might be in for it two without some seriously luck... Nat's in the water, Brady will have made it about half way across the ship, but he'll be taking a big risk now that the area is bloody, which means he'll be blind and have to make a nausea fort save... failing that will be a death sentence. Etienne... well, he's a spell caster. He'll be dead in a heartbeat if he tries. This whole situation is the definition of FUBAR at this point.

![]() |

Working on it!
Nat grabs for Grynt but can't find him, and gasps in horror as she realizes the half-orc is sinking, impossible to see, under the waves.
perception for grynt: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12 Guess that's a no.
Ok so to be clear, there is a rope hanging down that Nat is hanging on, and Li is grappled but conscious, right? I need to make absolutely certain of Nat's situation before I decide her action.
The Magus icon doesn't show as being in the water, are we sure he's underwater and not just grappled and unconscious on the deck? The grapple rules say that your character is moved adjacent to the grappler, but they don't say that the grappler chooses where they're moved to. I think it's supposed be moved to the closest square adjacent, which would be either square next to Squealy Nord. Moving a grappled foe is its own standard action, so the devilfish shouldn't be able to get him underwater this turn.
Squealy Nord attacks the devilfish ferociously, but without effect.
gore: 1d20 + 8 - 1 ⇒ (5) + 8 - 1 = 12
A grapple check is an attack, so Nord should get the opportunity to use Vengeance Strike against the fish if it does a grapple check against Magus. Alternatively, this can be an AoO.
Vengeance Strike or AoO: 1d20 + 8 - 1 ⇒ (16) + 8 - 1 = 23
damage: 1d8 + 7 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 7 + 3 = 16

GM_Starson |

Some clarifications. The devilfish lucked out and grabbed the magus next to him last turn, though I let him "Stay on deck". He attacked for his turn and did some damage. The devilfish gets a free bite attack anytime it succeeds on a grapple check (Nasty right?!) including the one to maintain control, it then used it's standard action to drag the Magus into the water and down about 10 feet. Grapple checks are not melee attacks, they are there own special action, but it diving into the water would provoke the AOO, but since the squid inked the water it's square as it did, it would be a 50% miss chance again (And some improved AC, but Squealy's attack is high enough).
Miss chance?: 1d100 ⇒ 5
My dice continue to hate you guys, not that it would matter to much in this case as it's not enough to kill the devilfish anyways. Li on the other hand is not unconscious, but very badly bruised and dragged under the water, and being a archer not in a great position. He also is in the bloody water, and needs a nausea roll...
Fort: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
Nauesa: 1d4 ⇒ 2
And is nauseated for 2 rounds.

And sorry, magus, not much I can do as GM noted.

GM_Starson |

Nat in desperation reaches into the water, and feels the flailing hand of Li, jabbing him with her wand to put some power back into him.
Guaril coughs and starts moving away, the healing energy helping him with a few of his worst wounds.
I'm gonna count him as saved... he's to beat up to help, and he's not gonna do any heroics. Not in his character and not in his stat line to pull it off anyways. Magus, I need a stabilization roll, and I need a constitution check against drowning. It's a DC 10 to start.

Alrighty. *Cracks knuckles* Time to get Nat the f#+# out of this. FYI GM, I have chronicles and faction journal cards with abilities on them that may assist. I'll list them in the discussion thread.
First, swift action to activate focus of the bull on Nat. +2 strength. Secondly, I'd like to treat Li's grapple check above as effectively an aid another to my grappling, giving me a +2 to escape.
grapple to escape: 1d20 + 4 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 4 + 1 + 2 = 22 Hopefully that will do it.
The following assumes that Nat broke free. If not, she will draw a dagger as a move action.

Ok, using the Happy Beat badge boon against the tentacle attack to get DR 5/- for that attack only. See my post in discussion, So I'm only at -20. By the way, with Bull focus my CMD is 18 instead of 17, though that would still have hit.
Sensing his mistress in trouble, Squealy Nord charges across the deck and leaps into the water, landing in the sea just above where Grynt's lifeless body is sinking, and tries to gore the beast.
Can this be a charge? I'll put the possible charge changes in separately.

It would be, but there is a splashing "danger". You at this moment are basically in the lion's pen during feeding time. I will make no comment on how it will act once you get out of reach and flee and it can safely munch on your fallen friend. Also, I'll count this as a charge since it just adds 3 damage.

Brady hears the sounds of horror, splashing and rending, coming from both sides of the ship. He looks to Gauril and yells in frustration. "Get below decks man! You're no help up here, and only in more danger. Go!!!" His voice snaps with more anger than it needs, his frustration at the current situation spilling out against the man who was the reason they were here.
In pulling Gauril out of the water, Brady had moved 15'. Including the square he'd started from, that means that 30' of his 50' rope must still be hanging over that side of the ship. It is available to grab!
Torn over which way to go, who to help, the rope ends up tipping the scales of his decision. He rushes back to the gunwale he'd just left and peers down into the bloody murk. Staring into the water, he tries to remember some training from long ago; there were techniques you could use to move your punches through the water's resistance. Yes! He remembered!
Move: 15'
Standard (move equivalent): use martial flexibility to gain aquadynamic focus with unarmed strikes
Next round, my intent will be to tie the rope off to the gunwale before diving in and starting to attack. What is the action economy that applies to that? I'm seeing a best-case of (move) tie off rope, 5' step, (standard) attack. Is that reasonable?
