Zerin has been casually following the back and forth, while fidding with some odd piece of equipment.

"So... if the reason that the B.A.R.T. here wasn't going to paid should be obvious... then maybe it's worth taking a look at what you've been handed. That sounds rather... ominous and if it means someone isn't meant to survive this I'd really rather not have a strike team break into my shop and cause all sorts of collateral damage."

To clear up the confusion - the data packet contains the account number that was used to access the Postal Pylon, and the name Dwight Kaplan. The packet is the transaction receipt for the Postal Pylon order that was picked up by BART and delivered to Emily. That's it. Nothing else. Now, there are a lot of things you can do once you have the account number, but those are up to you to choose to do.

Searching the Obituaries, Emily discovers that Dwight Kaplan was found dead of accidental causes, approximately two weeks ago. Dwight's Obit reads very similar to Carrie On's Obit, in that he died doing what he loved, which was exploring the unusual, dark, deserted places of The Metro.

A brief follow-up reveals that he, like Carrie, was a Chiller Social: a member of a small, low-population subculture, combining aspects of the Thriller and Spiller groups to bring feelings and experiences of suspense and the good-old-fashioned excitement of finding out what's hiding in the dark to their followers. Many of them use Collaboration Mesh clothing, which picks up their heartbeat, galvanic skin responses, and other neurological responses to their situations and transmits them along with their feeds, allowing any of their followers who are also wearing a Collab-Rig (usually a full-head hood that helps heighten the feelings of fear and excitement, but sometimes full-body suits as well) to "ride along" with them. Most Thrillers, with their high-rise parkour and wing-suit antics, use Collab-Suits, and some few Spillers do, as well, but Chillers have been picking up a new niche for the technology of late.

Sorry for the delay. It's been a WEEK and it's only Wednesday.

The Obituary for Dwight Kaplan is sparse, but you're able to get the following things from it:

*He died unexpectedly while on-site doing a Chiller Stream from an abandoned, soon-to-be-condemned section of Bee-Ville. His surviving family consist of his mother and son.

*He was 35 years old.

*His family has been given a generous compensation by the Calibr8 and EnVoTek corporations, as their safety equipment - guaranteed not to fail - failed catastrophically.

Bee-Ville:
"Bee-Ville," or "Wanna-Be-Ville," is a completely foundation-less section of The Metro, suspended over the Golden Gate Park Open Space Sectors. It is completely supported by structural arches, aero-thrust generating ventilation shafts, and a massive amount of lift-generating materials that include a variety of superconducting coils and blown-carbon-atom alloys (look it up, it's amazing). The result is a strange, almost organic construction that resembles a wild bee hive instead of the usual square, hexagonal, or columnar towers of The Metro. Critics of the design have pointed out that if it ever falls, it won't collapse in on itself as all the towers are designed to do in the event of a catastrophe, but rather will fall straight through four layers of parkland, forest, and game preserve open space. Bee-Ville is always surrounded by skycars, aircabs, and the hum of MetroTrans express lines rushing in and out of its many access ways.

Bee-Ville is populated almost entirely by people who firmly believe that they're one step away from greatness, social climbers that push themselves to the breaking point, all the while failing to realize that they are trapping themselves in a perpetual race toward ever-moving goalposts. People move to BeeVille thinking they’re going to climb up up up that ladder, but really, they just find themselves moving in to denser and denser housing as their living expenses increase, their paychecks stay much the same, and they get passed over for promotion time and time again.

Sometimes, sections of Bee-Ville get marked off as Condemned, which isn't to say that they're falling apart, but rather that they need to be refitted and repurposed - often this takes the form of updating the lightweight materials, ensuring that the aero-thrust chambers are producing enough output as compared to the input (exterior air flows through the shafts, into the chambers, and is expelled as thrust to help support sections of the District), and so forth. In this case, the section Dwight was in had been marked for refitting from a commercial storage area in to a food-plant greenhouse that will, when it's complete, provide several hundred tons of food every quarter.

Happy New Year! Update time!

While Zerin doesn't recognize any of the names involved in the Obituaries, she does recognize that both Calibr8 and EnVoTek make good, solid, reliable gear. It's stress tested and guaranteed not to fail except under incredibly extreme stresses.

The kind of stresses that aren't normally generated by someone who's using them as instructed, no matter how run down and condemned the area they're in might be.

That is something that strikes her as not only "odd" but "really, really, unlikely."

Emily looks away from what she's doing because the curiosity is getting the better of her, "Zerin, Could someone have sabotaged that gear? That would mean they had access to their homes, right?"

OOC Note for Zerin: Access to their homes, or, more simply, the gear didn't fail, and someone actively caused the problem. Based on the video from Carrie On's SD card, the latter is more likely.

Zerin shrugs.

"How paranoid is your circle about security? Living on livestream isn't exactly the most subtle way of existing.

She considers, thinking.

"Given enough time any security system can be interfered with, so I'd say 'access' might be relative. But I wouldn't say 'sabotage' sounds paranoid in this situation at all."

Emily says, "It's not paranoia if someone uses a convoluted method to send you a creepy video anonymously..."

Emily pauses for a second, cocks her head to one side, and finishes "...that's entertainment. I may be off crime thrillers for the rest of my life. "

Emily then remembers she was going to call the cops...

Emily doesn't really WANT to call the cops. She doesn't want to lose story rights. But she also doesn't want to get murdered...

Distracted again, Emily asks Avryl, "Avyrl? Are we sure there's no way that card or the reader has tracking on it? Did we check for that?"

"I'd rather not be entertainment, but to each their own. Already paid my price for living life on the cutting edge." There's a certain dryness in her voice, in particular as she draws attention to her cybernetics and perhaps Emily's past feature focusing on them years ago.

Of course, now that you mention it, I'm doing my best not to kick myself.

And so she reverses course, and begins to take out some of her tools for delicate work, but then thinks about it.

Let's take a look at what the book says about Skills and how to make them work.

The Rules wrote:

Normally, you don’t need to roll a check every time you use a skill. You get an automatic success on a skill when:

(a) you aren’t under any sort of stress while attempting to perform the skill check,
(b) your (Attribute + Skill Rank + Ability (if any)) equals or exceeds the target DC, and
(c) there is no dangerous or negative result that can occur if your check fails.

If you meet all three of these requirements, congratulations! You perform the task, free and clear. Say you want to do a simple search for commonly available data on a computer: if your Attribute + Skill Rank + Ability equals or exceeds the Very Easy DC of 8, you do it. No roll required.

Any time you’re in danger (real or potential), or any time there’s a possible negative outcome of your actions (you’re trying to use a computer on a secured network, where one wrong password or bad keystroke will set off an alarm), you have to roll. If you meet or exceed the target DC, you succeed.

All checks – skills, combat, you name it – are resolved by rolling 2d6 and adding all modifiers, and meeting or exceeding a target DC. It goes just like this:

Roll 2d6 + Attribute + Skill + Modifiers VS DC

Modifiers for checks include:

(a) the value of the controlling Attribute
(b) any Ability that modifies the skill
(c) any modifiers (smoke, terrain, etc.)
(d) consecutive action penalties (see Combat for more on actions)

So, just as with the Reputation checks we've done before, you're going to roll 2d6+13 on this roll, since you don't exceed the necessary Difficulty Class by default.

The GM isn't sure why you guys are so concerned about the card reader, considering where it came from and the fact that it was Zerin's idea to talk to Jagger in the first place, and Zerin made it clear that while Jagger's kind of a jerk, he's also trustworthy, but who am I to argue...

The card reader is easily disconnected from the computer and torn down in the space of about three minutes.

It's completely clean. Exactly as one might expect of an antique, collectors-item piece of technology.

When put back together, it still works, but whatever warranty it had left is now void, due to what remains of the "Quality Seal" having been broken.

Goldfish brain activate! But really, I'm going with paranoia is what keeps old soldiers alive so, it's reasonable for her to have done. And even if Jagger is reputable, shenanigans can run amok. Zerin's not really that worried about the possibility of a remaining warranty

Zerin strips the simple piece down quickly and efficiently in response to Avryl's request. She didn't think it was likely that Jagger would f~#~ her over, but tech often had location functionalities built in and well, paranoia wasn't always a bad thing.

"Looks clean... worth a little less on the resale market, but then I wasn't the one who paid." She gives a shrug, slightly amused at the last bit.

BART's been pacing this entire time like, oh, someone who found out that he's on a serial killer's "Need 'Em" list.

"Wait... wait... Time out. Her gear was tampered with, as in sabotaged. In her HOME?!" He turns to Emily. And you think Avy and I should take off? To where, exactly, when this lunatic has my address on his "To Do" list?

He takes a step back to put all three of the women in the small space in front of him, puts his hands to his temples and then extends his arms to encompass all three within the spread of him limbs "AND WHY ARE WE NOT CALLING THE COPS?!"

Minor note, the GM has been pointing out that the gear in Dwight Kaplan's case was most likely sabotaged or ruined ON SITE, just as Carrie Mendez was clearly murdered ON SITE and made to look like an accident. That the PC's are assuming it was in his home, but if BART would like to put 2 and 2 together about that and correct them in character, that's fine, too.

Emily takes a deep breath and presses whatever button she's been avoiding pressing to connect a call to the authorities. As she doesn't have a direct line for someone she's starting with whatever precinct is closest to her apartment. When someone answers she'll say "I need to speak to someone about evidence I have found of two possible murders."

The GM has been having some difficult life issues lately, and would like to apologize for the delay. We now return to our regularly scheduled game.

The AR-view image of officer on the other end is a young man, probably early 20's, in a crisp, freshly pressed uniform. The SF METRO PD pins on his collar are shiny and probably new. His smile fades as you tell him you have evidence for two murders.

"I'll... um... I have your information here, Ms. Carter," he says. "Let me... let me get you through to Homicide."

The Homicide desk is staffed by another young man, also probably in his early 20's, whose uniform is also relatively new, but not nearly as crisp or shiny.

He asks, matter-of-factly, what he can do to help you, who you believe was murdered, and what evidence you believe you've found.

The video also seems to be threatening myself and the courier who delivered the card. While checking to see if this thing is real I also found ties to Dwight Kaplan's death."

The Homicide Officer listens to your statement, nodding along until you mention ties to another death.

At that point, he cocks an eyebrow, and you can see the motion of his shoulder, indicating he's typing something as you speak. When you finish, he begins reading off of a prepared questionnaire:

"Are you currently safe? Are you in any danger? If the answers to these questions are, in order, 'Yes,' and 'No,' please answer the following question: are you able to report to the Precinct Offices to speak directly to a Homicide Detective? Do you require escort or transport? Are you, or any members of your party, injured?"

"Certainly," the Officer nods. "We have your location and I'll dispatch a vehicle now. It will be arriving via auto-drive shortly. Once you've entered the vehicle, you'll be put in contact with a Detective who will begin the process of reviewing your information, and when you arrive at the Precinct, the Detective will escort you from the vehicle to their offices. If the vehicle does not arrive within the next five minutes, please call this address again, with priority code Seven Five Five Nine. Thank you, and have a nice day."

As Emily talks to the police on the phone, BART gets less agitated. Until she starts talking about who's being threatened. As she mentions that, he starts giving her the universal sign for "No. Stop. Don't." waving his hands in front of himself.

Once she says the word "courier", his arms drop to his sides and he hangs his head in resignation. "Well, I guess that's a couple of months of lean eating and discount maintenance." He turns to Emily after she hangs up with the police, and jokingly says "You are going to be the death of my business one way or another, aren't you?"

At the thought of his only friend in this situation leaving, he blurts out "You saw the same footage we did, Avy.
