Aylaeth:
'S okay man, apology accepted. My issue isn't with you tweaking your character; that's fine, and you can go ahead with it once the battle is over. For me it was more the timing of the thing, and the fact that it looked like you had just kind of gone ahead and done it before I even had a chance to say yea or nay. I don't like character retroing before combat as it's one more thing I have to track and I'm already juggling a lot as it is. Also, story-wise, it doesn't really make any sense. When DMB retro'd Damian, he had it happen after a night's rest in a strange and magical location, so there was some backstory and a way to justify it in fluff. Having it happen right before battle is just too convenient for my tastes, and generally requires some pretty contrived conditions, IMO.

I really appreciate the enthusiasm and energy you bring to my games, and I don't wanna discourage it or wet-blanket it, but at the same time I do have certain standards and guidelines I gotta stick to in order to keep things from getting too ridiculous for me to work with. I like ridiculous games, but even I have my limits.

Thanks for your understanding, man, and keep up the awesome work. Just make sure you don't get too far ahead of your GM. ;-)

The battle is joined. Belsarious' arrow misses wide, sailing off into the distance to explode harmlessly away from the enemy, but Sir Damian lands a crushing first blow as he and Keythan tear one of the Erinyes from the sky, dropping her tattered body from the sky to crash onto the heads of the ground troops.

DRA only:

No worries bro, I completely understand where you're coming from. This is your game and your are well within your right to have your rules and regulations respected and followed.

Like I said, the only reason I went ahead with it without getting your express permission first is that I hadn't been looking at it as a retooling, but just a simple re-tweaking of a brand new character. That won't happen again.

I can't really see how a re-tooling would make any sense though, game wise, as her having a sorcerous bloodline would be something she'd have had from birth and how she learns and uses her spells would have been different. But I dunno, maybe there's some way to work it out we can discuss after the battle. It wouldn't have made much difference in the battle at all anyway, the changes being so minor.

And whoo-hoo! We're up! Slaughter time! heh heh!

Without need of command from her the mighty Pegasus Lord, Tora'an, performs a perfect 180' turn and dives right between the evil pair, preventing them from using their bows without putting themselves at risk. Then rounding on the Erinyes Mai has already wounded, he attacks furiously. His hatred of these blasphemies just at great as his rider's he lashes out smiting the devil with all of his celestial power, intent on nothing less than it's destruction.

With long years of practice battling astride her Andaeu (Life Partner) Aylaeth seamlessly co-ordinates her attacks with Tora'an, adding her magical and melee might to the battle. Using in inner arcane reserves to charge her staff with power and potent electrical energy, she then uses her incredible training and ability to both attack and cast at the creatures at once, hammering her foe with her staff charged to bursting with electrical energy and sending a bolt of force at the same time. The chaos of battle almost causes her to lose focus on her spells yet by gritting her teeth and focusing even harder she is able to pull it off.

The combination of her and Mai's attacks leave the fallen angel barely clinging on to it's life.

I have to take the rolls as they appear onscreen. To do anything else would be enormously unfair to the others.

Tora'an bite(?) damage against Fury #6: 1d3 + 6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 3 = 12

After watching Livain immolate over a dozen of their brethren, and the mighty Sir Damian tear one of the feared Erinyes out of the sky and drop her, broken and ragged, to the ground, the Marrashi are unable to maintain discipline and instead of focusing exclusively on one target as they were ordered, the outsiders spin complexly and spray their attacks all over the sky.

Mai and Aylaeth shrug off the hails of arrows directed their way, but Sir Damian and Keythan, twisting to protect the newly-armored Brook, are pierced by numerous bolts, and a single arrow manages to sneak past the scrum around Livain and pierce the aellar's battered frame.

The Marrashi howl in Auran, thirsty for your blood, hungry for your death.

The Erinyes on Livain's flank falls out of the sky, punctured with Min's arrows and leaking brackish blood. The soldiers on the ground stare greedily up at the wounded Sir Damian, so exposed and just tantalizingly out of the reach of their bowmen and ballistas. They await...something, down there, looking like a strange machine build of meat and metal.

Suddenly a chant goes up on the ground. A strange word, but one that some of you recognize right away as a Draconic name, a name that means "cruel flyer" -- "Valkk! Valkk! Valkk! Valkk!" comes the chant, and the fetid breath of hundreds of orcs and trolls and hobgoblins rises up in a malodorous wave washing over Sir Damian.

"Bleaugh." offers Brook. "Smells like the stables back home!"

Out of the sheet of smoke behind the enemy lines the flapping things reveal themselves; three flame drakes and a large black dragon blast through the cloud and rush you. The dragon thunders up to Sir Damian, his sharp scales curved and hooked horribly. The three drakes shoot across the distance with astonishing speed and spew fireballs at the rest of you, their hideous and insane screeches like fingernails on slate, their piggy eyes wide with fire and hate.

The black dragon, Valkk, roars a challenge that seems to embolden the foul creatures around him. "Watch me crush their leader! They will quail and fall and surrender like the puny meatlings they are! THEY WILL FALL! THE ABOMINATIONS WILL BE OURS, AND WITH THEM; VICTORYYYY!" He then unleashes a horrid stream of acid directly at the leader of the Skyknights.

Damian pulls hard on Keythan's reins, angling him downwards so that the brunt of the acidic blast falls upon him. Brook is mostly spared, though Keythan is still burned by the acrid spray. A terrible feeling in the pit of his stomach wells up that something might happen to Brook, but Damian quells it. He has a duty to perform, he reminds himself, and fear is just another obstacle to victory. He silently reminds himself of one of his adopted father's sayings, finding himself saying it out loud. In fact, he shouts it as part challenge and part inspiration. "Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather its conquering. You don't scare me, Valkk, for you have no power over me. You will fall, as will your armies, AS WILL YOUR EMPIRE!" He holds his lance up, ready to meet the vicious dragon with everything that he has.

The furies seem suddenly out of sorts. The one closest to Mai and Livain and Aylaeth lets out a cruel laugh and shouts to her companions. "Didja hear that? The Aellar are lifemates! Crush one and watch the other crumble with grief! This will be so much fun!" Her sisters respond in kind with equally mean-spirited laughter that echoes across the sky. The interlocutor hisses, then, at Aylaeth and shrieks again to the other devils; "This one has celestial companions! Kill it! KILL IT!" She spits the word "celestial" like it's the foulest curse known to anyone.

None of the Erinyes' skills are not quite up to their taunts, however, as the Furies firing from a distance come vaguely close to hitting Lin (the biggest target in the sky besides Valkk), but still manage to miss, and the rest of their hail of flaming arrows all go off-target and are easily dodged by the rest of you, even the badly wounded Livain.

Only one of the obsidian-winged fallen angels doesn't fire her bow; she instead takes a rope made of hair off her belt and flies down behind Sir Damian, her intentions obvious.

Damian shouts orders to the troops, his voice carrying easily over the shouts of the enemy horde as if carried to them on the wings of angels. "Fly, fly as fast as the wind! Do not let them slow us from our mission!" He twists Keythan in a downward spiral to avoid the devil at his back, but then turns towards Izmir. Without even needing to spur Keythan onwards, the griffon unleashes his full, magically-enhanced speed. They streak across the field of battle, covering a vast distance in the blink of an eye. He turns to face the battle and shouts back to his allies, "Come to me! I'll cover you and hold them off! When I turn back towards Izmir, do the same in return!"

It's bad tactics for him to charge the dragon, as the charge mechanics wouldn't let him pull up and maintain enough altitude to stay away from the ground troops. The dragon is at 80' almost directly below Damian, who would end his charge somewhere between 70' and 0' altitude. This tactic allows us to rotate in and out while maintaining a steady march to Izmir, while also limiting the effects of their slower ground troops.

It's my house rule for Criticial Fumbles; if you make multiple attacks and one hits and one is a natural 1, then the nat 1 cancels the hit. If you have other hits, though, they still apply.

Otherwise, if you do just one attack and it's a crit fumble you run the risk of dropping your weapon, shooting a companion, etc. Depends on the situation. Same for all my games, and it applies to NPCs and bad guys, too.

The combination of twin magi attacking is too much for the obsidian-winged to devil to handle, and she falls from the sky with bolts of electricity trailing out of her mouth and fingertips, a victim of first Mai's, then Aylaeth's martial casting prowess. Her sisters, enraged, order the Marrashi to direct fire at Mai and Aylaeth, aiming to maim them as much as possible.

Valkk grins and roars at Aylaeth's words. "Your cowardly leader has left you, sylph! You cannot run from us, we will tear you from the sky!"

A rain of arrows sails down at the party, but the Marrashi make poor siege archers and all their projectiles fly off the mark save two; one nicking poor Livain and the other slicing Min's arm.

Lin turned sharply as they started to come around, Valekk's speech made her blood boil, she wanted nothing more then to knock the black dragon down a notch. Then she noticed the emptiness in the bond and was shocked when Min fired off several shots in rapid succession.

Min was calm and collected, he wanted to know the black dragonflights purpose but so far all they seemed to want was to death. Domination, Pain, Murder and Death. Their purpose was exactly what Min was fighting against now. "Your purpose is empty and you are weak Valekk, so go now and begone from our sky!" His first two arrows flew unerringly towards the drake that had harassed them, but he saved one of his special bane arrows for Valekk himself. As he pulled back on Avenaada the bane arrow began to glow brightly, a single point of light within the smoke around them.

He aimed for Valekk's breast and released...

Lin continued to circle sharply, seeming to circle Livain protectively, as she tried to come around and aim herself towards the incoming drakes and Valekk. She intended to knock them from the sky on her way after the retreating form of Sir Damain.

Immediately, he plummets, falling like a stone as if pushed down by a mighty hand. It is an odd sight to see a creature that is normally so majestic drop so still and soundlessly. The ground troops, so used to the mighty Valkk pulling up at the last second, do not move, and at least a dozen are crushed to a pulp under his enormous bulk.

As Livain maintains formation and falls in next to Lin, healing herself en route, one of the Erinyes vanishes, teleported, and appears 100' in front of Sir Damian, blocking his progress. The other two fly down at top speed and take up positions at the rest of the group's altitude, but behind the drakes.

There is a disturbance of some sort on the ground. Sir Damian, while charging ahead, flew over the lights on the ground, and now some kind of energy is crackling between those lights. This is all happening at ground level, but it is some incredibly powerful force, whatever it is.

As he brought his eyes back towards the drakes and Erinyes, that were blocking the path before them, he casually nocked another arrow to Avenaada's string and pulled tight as he prepared to strike out at their foes. He chuckled lightly at Avenaada's blunt confession and came to realize that their little trio was going to work out splendidly. Despite his injuries, and being seriously outnumbered, he smiled.

Lin gave the Calvary as much attention as Min did, if they were flying she would have cared more. When Valekk fell from the sky, smote by Min and his strange lifebow, she growled in annoyance. She had wanted so badly to tear that black dragon down. For now though she rocketed towards the nearest drake and its Erinyes companions, intending to give them a taste of her icy wrath...
