Carmina Scarnetti |
The situation was tricky. If the house was not used for anything, they were wasting their time, but if it was, then they could not leave it. Carmina thinks about it for a while, then suddenly her expression brightens. There was a way they could stop wasting their time in this rathole.
"Guys, let's search this place throughout one more time. Then we can burn it down."
True to her word, she starts searching the house extra carefully, trying not to leave anything unchecked.
Taking 20 on perception. (21)
Anafa, Yamyra |
Yamyra gapes in genuine amazement at Carmina's suggestion. She is obviously working up to respond, somehow; but she turns to the others first, as if to gauge their reaction.
Fancy |
"Mistress Carmina, I fear that would not engender markable progress toward the goal of locating the woman, Natalya Vancaskerkin."
"Perhaps a less...
incendiary response?"
"At the least, laying in wait until the hour of midnight?"
Ganer Jitesh |
A concerned look crossed Ganer's face when Carmina suggested fire as a solution. "I cannot agree to such a plan," He said, a little more urgency in his voice than was usually present. "The fire could spread and burn down the entire district, to say nothing of the property owner's loss."
Horven Graveltoes |
"Fancy has a point. We should probably wait somewhere until midnight. If no one shows, we'll go grab a pint on me at a more lively establishment and call it a night. We can pick this up in the morning," Horven says, stifling a yawn.
DM Eric |
So what is the plan guys? Do you want to wait until midnight to see if anyone shows up here? If so, then go ahead and state where exactly you are hiding (inside the main room, outside, front or back) and then give me some Stealth checks.
.
btw the main floor area of the tavern is appx 30' by 40' with several piles of debris (considered difficult terrain).
Anafa, Yamyra |
DM Eric: Is there time to 'take 20' on searching the interior, even one room of the interior? I want to know if finding a hiding place for Fancy & I inside is feasible or if I should find one outside.
Yamyra sifts through the debris farthest from the entryway, seemingly searching for possible cover for herself & Fancy.
DM Eric |
Yamyra: There is plenty of time here to take 20 on your Perception check. I will say there is nothing else in here though. The piles of debris in here are not large enough for even a Small creature to hide behind. The debris is miscellaneous bits of wood, rock, junk, etc. Nothing fancy about this...(Sorry for that pun there, he he)
Anafa, Yamyra |
Concluding there are no reliable hiding places within the building, Yamyra begins the process again outside.
untrained Stealth to aid another for Fancy's check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22, Oh what a waste of a wonderful roll, considering I only needed to make a 10 I believe... untrained Stealth: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Carmina Scarnetti |
"But we are in the Dockway, there's plenty of water around in case the fire gets out of control. Besides, I don't think anybody will care if we burn this place down. The ashes would probably be worth more than this old shack. And on top of that..."
Noticing that half of the group had left the room to find a hiding place, Carmina stops her complaining, crosses her arms, and lets out an annoyed sigh.
Carmina is going to stay in the main room. She figures that any possible slavers will not see her as a threat, come closer and then... Claws up and full attack!
Gared Naught |
Gared noted where his companions hid, and placed himself in the main room of the tavern, hiding behind the main door, leaving it open so he could see through it out into the dock, bow drawn.
Ganer Jitesh |
Ganer headed out after Horven, deciding to hide in plain sight. He moved a few buildings away, though still within sight of the old tavern, and sat down on the ground with his knees up in front of him. He did try and conceal himself in shadow, but he knew he wasn't much for hiding. He instead hoped that they would mistake him for a destitute, and would pay him no heed.
Stealth: 1d20 ⇒ 16
Bluff: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28 To pass himself off as a bum if questioned.
DM Eric |
Time: 11:00 pm
The plan decided on, the six of you take positions both in and outside of the Pelican. Carmina using herself as bait with Gared watching from a corner of the main room. The rest of you covering all angles of approach to the tavern.
Midnight approaches...
P 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
S 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Horven, Yamyra, Fancy, and Ganer please give me Perception checks.
Anafa, Yamyra |
Oh dear...
Here goes, untrained Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13, better than I feared.
The halfling's ears perk slightly, attentive to the night sounds of the city.
DM Eric |
Horven and Yamyra feel free to react here. If you decide to do nothing, I will proceed onwards, he he.
Anafa, Yamyra |
edit: just re-read your description. I notice her because she is trying to not attract notice...
Fancy, love. Time to tend to 'matters at hand'. Look there.
Having directed the Eidolon's attention to the covert figure, Yamyra calls to mind the incantations & gestures to weave a dweomer of protection about herself or Fancy.
Horven Graveltoes |
Stealth check:1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23
DM Eric |
S 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Gared and Carmina I need Perception checks please.
Anafa, Yamyra |
Phooey, I think I started this fight...
Yamyra is casting Mage Armor on Fancy.
"Bother! She's invisible! Be careful everyone!" Once she has enscorcelled Fancy, Yamyra grabs a small cobblestone from the alleyway. Preparing to be able to use her sling next round...
Love, try & take her alive please.
Fancy |
As the dweomer of protection settles about her form the statuesque outsider rises, much like a marionette whose stings have been drawn by a master puppeteer, sure & definite; the scarf falling from about her head to reveal the blazing sigil beneath.
As you direct.
Fancy runs lightly toward the last viewed location of the now-vanished 'provocateur'.
DM Eric |
Fancy 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Carmina 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Ganer 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
Gared 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Horven 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
.
?? 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
As Yamyra finishes casting her spell on her faithful companion and follows that by drawing her sling she can see Fancy approaching the last position of the shadowy figure. However the eidolon stops at the entrance, not seeing anyone other than Gared and Carmina who still wait in the main room. Fancy is soon joined by Horven who like the others loses sight of the stranger.
Round 1: Ganer, "?", Anafa, Horven, Carmina, Fancy, Gared.
OK we are in round to round combat. Yamyra is about 20' from the back of the tavern. Horven and Fancy are at the entrance, and Gared along with Carmina are in the main room. Again there is no map...but rest assured there will be maps in future encounters :) A reminder: The main room is appx 30' by 40' and while there are piles of debris on the floor, it is NOT considered Difficult Terrain.
Ganer Jitesh |
Ganer had been keeping an eye on Horven's hiding spot as well as the tavern, and so saw the halfling moving. Ganer followed, readying his shield and mace as he did so.
I had Ganer watching Horven basically because otherwise Ganer wouldn't know that anything's gone south. Also, I don't know where he ended up, or if he's even in the tavern by now, but aside from drawing weapons, all he's doing is moving.
DM Eric |
Ganer arrives at the entrance to the tavern rejoining his companions. He peers into the main room but only sees his friends. Whoever the others had detected is nowhere in sight.
The rest of you pause for a few seconds waiting for someone to announce their presence but other than the sounds of your breathing, nothing reaches your ears.
Round 1: Ganer, "?", Anafa, Horven, Carmina, Fancy, Gared.
Anafa, Yamyra |
As I seem to be up next in initiative. I will declare my action.
Seeing no target for her sling, Yamyra takes a moment to enshroud herself in the same dweomer she wove about Fancy. Yamyra casts Mage Armor on herself.
In order to save time, when Fancy's initiative rolls around she will hold her action so as to bring her initiative even with Yamyra's next round.
Carmina Scarnetti |
As she notices someone at the entrance of the house, Carmina starts her "Innocent bystander" ruse, but abandons it as she notices the familiar figure of Yamyra's eidolon.
"Who... Who are- Fancy, what is it? Have you seen anything?"
Not really much she can do at this point, at least until someone explains the situation at her.
Gared Naught |
Gared begins to search around the room for the figure, moving quietly as he goes, putting a finger to his lips to motion for the others to quiet.
Actively searching, moving towards where Yamara entered the room,
DM Eric |
As Gared moves through the main room of the tavern and approaches one corner of the room, he is startled to hear a voice utter something in a panicked tone. Before he can puzzle what the words are, a vivid cone of clashing colors springs forth from the corner engulfing both Gared and Carmina!
Carmina and Gared, Will saves please.
As the light show fades away you can all see the source of the illumination: A single person wearing what smells like unwashed clothing standing about 20' from the entrance. Due to the dim light it is hard to make out further details about the individual.
Round 2: Ganer, Anafa, Fancy, Horven, Carmina, Gared, "Enemy".
BTW, I forgot to mention this but the lighting is considered Dim Light, which means creatures within this area have concealment (20% miss chance in combat) from those without darkvision or the ability to see in darkness.
Anafa, Yamyra |
First off, for reference, Yamyra's AC is now 16/ t12/ ff15 & Fancy's is now 19/ t11/ ff18.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20, Whelp, that was easy to 'read'... Do I have to use a free action to speak when it isn't my initiative?
DM Eric |
Carmina feels the vivid colors washing over her and sees sparkling motes in the back of her eyes, threatening to overwhelm her senses. With sheer determination she fights back the sense of sensory overload and remains standing on her feet. Will save successful.
Yamyra: You can use a free action to say something here.
Gared Naught |
Will:1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14 oooo, that's going to be close!
Gared was completely surprised by the bright vivid colors coming out of the dark but tried to fight off the magic none the less...
Carmina Scarnetti |
As her eyes recover from the colorful assault, Carmina mentally prepares to fight off hordes of invisible nidalese wizard-slavers, but calms down a little when she notices that the enemy consists of one completely outmatched and cornered person, who did not even look much like a slaver to her.
The situation not being as clear as it could be, she decides to keep her claws seathed for the moment, instead resorting to words to subdue.
"Surrender! You are outnumbered six to-" She notices Gared lying in the ground, the dwarf's mind overwhelmed by the spell. "... Well, five to one! But the rest of us are not weak-willed to succumb to such amateurish tricks."
Demoralize (Intimidate): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Anafa, Yamyra |
Close, but allow her to surrender if Carmina's words have moved her, love...
Knowing the likelihood of melee was imminent & rising, Yamyra allowed her sling to slowly cease it's whirling as she brought an incantation of inquiry to mind, lips & fingers. Yamyra casts Detect Magic, stepping closer to the figure if farther than 60' away. Spellcraft DC 16 to recognize it...
Fancy |
As You wish.
Fancy closes with the odorous assailant, her arms held in such a way that their full length is not immediately apparent, though her hands are open & ready to deliver blows should continued violence prove necessary. She closes to '5 distance from the figure.
Also note, if the figure attempts to run, Fancy will not wait for orders, but will attempt to grapple, or at least make a free attack for non-lethal.
Horven Graveltoes |
Horven moves into flanking with Fancy, but holds on the attack to see if the assailant becomes violent.
Move, then ready an attack if the enemy makes a lethal attack.
Attack(if needed):1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26; crit confirm:1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8 dang it!; damage:1d4 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3 plus 1d6 ⇒ 4 sneak attack.
Ganer Jitesh |
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Finding no one in the tavern, and Gared unconscious, Ganer decided to deal with the issue at hand. He headed toward the unconscious dwarf and conjured water to splash his friend in the face.
Using Create Water to splash Gared with water to wake him.
DM Eric |
Gared heads towards his fellow dwarf to awaken him. As he enters the tavern room, he can see by his darkvision a thin man standing in one of the corners of the room. As he casts his spell the tavern floor is washed with water flowing from Gared's hand.
While Ganer regains consciousness, he still sees bright motes of light blocking his vision. Worse, he finds his muscles unresponsive to his brain commands. Ganer is blinded and stunned for 1d4 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10 rounds.
Yamyra sends a mental signal to her eidolon to approach the individual ready to subdue him. The statuelike crature is joined by Horven flanking the individual.
Carmina's call for the figure to surrender is greeted with derisive laughter. "Ha, ha, ha haaaa! Do you think you rank Pathfinders can defeat me?" He starts giggling again and all of you can tell this man (as Yamyra belatedly realized now) is not completely stable.
He spreads his arms out to cast another spell...
Concentration (cast defensively DC 17) 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
...but his spell fails miserably! Horven and Fancy both interpret this as a hostile act and proceed to strike him. While the eidolon's blows are not effective, Horvens dagger finds a spot between the man's thighs and buttocks, eliciting a cry of pain! Take 7 Damage.
Round 3: Ganer, Anafa, Fancy, Horven, Carmina, {Gared}, "Enemy". {stunned}
Anafa, Yamyra |
Fancy, grab him!
Yamyra's brows furrow as she continues to study the odoriferous caster. Maintaining concentration as she observes the 'slaver'. I guess that would make this the 'first round', does he have any magical auras besides spellcasting? Does spellcasting count as a magic aura?
Fancy |
Realizing she may be a bit too close to get a good angle on their opponent, Fancy steps back 5' step away from, the target is still in her melee range with reach, she also still threatens for purposes of flanking, 'I think'. She then reaches out to the smelly madman, her fingers spread to clutch & contain. Initiating Grapple: ordinarily this would provoke an attack of opportunity, but since he doesn't have a reach weapon, I don't believe it does. Grapple attempt: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23, Wow! I think that got him.
