It seems worth pointing out to anyone who is questioning this approach that these are not preferred house rules so much as adjustments to make the gaming experience work within the confines of the medium of PbP(of course others may have other adjustments). And, importantly, from what I can tell, our players are neither systematically at an advantage or disadvantage based on these adjustments, relative to standard table-top play.
Well put.

I agree. I am not a rulesmonger for PFS being somewhat new. What I can tell you from a player experience standpoint via PBP is that it seems to work well and fits with the ultimate spirit of the idea of roleplaying. I like that we skip initiative - on pbp I have seen many games stall and some die because of it. One GM that gets past this is GM MUG who rolls for initiative for party and bad guys, people the post their moves in spoilered format and them he pieces together a narrative based on accomodating everyones independent actions, allowing for adjustments as needed.

That's actually a very good point and idea about initiative, Elwyn. I've been thinking over that exact idea myself as it fits with my narrative style of GM'ing the Pbp/CbD. I'm still working it over in my head to figure if I can do it without too much more of a time investment.
I know what you mean about stalling. I researched this a lot before I started, and I saw a lot of ocmments like yours. That was a big reason why I decided to take a more simplified approach (the other was my own limitations).
When you think of it, the though process isn't much different at the table. Many GM's forgo calculating encumbereance, tracking rations, keeping track of SP/CP change, etc, because, while that is a part of RAW, they feel that it would slow down the table too much and players would lose interest.... that and the GM himself may burn out on enforcing all that record keeping. I believe this is what happens on a number of Pbp, just more over things like combat tracking. (In Pbp, it's actually easier to keep track of enc, gold change, rations, etc because you have more time...but combat can be more complicated/harder for those who don't have access to battlegrids).

Not sure how many Fortitude rolls I need to make to kick my rat disease...let me know if you need more.
Fortitude: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Fortitude: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Fortitude: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Fortitude: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Fortitude: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Fortitude: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

The party has earned 538gp each in this adventure.
According to the chronicle sheet, no additional magic items of use were found / recordable from this scenario.
If this is your first time with the character, you have 150gp+538gp=788gp to spend. You need to list the starting gear you bought, if any, as part of your purchases. Please have that all to me by Monday. If this is not your first adventure, I probably have your chronicle sheets from earlier (I'll list those as soon as I get home). But, if I do not have them, now is the time to send those to me.

Gear purchased prior to scenario: Bullets, Sling (20), Cold Iron Dagger, Kikko armor, Longspear, Silver Mace, Light, Sling; Backpack (empty), Holy symbol, wooden: Sarenrae, Pouch, belt (empty)
---------
A strong and dramatic finish. Well played and good luck with part 2. If I may offer a word of advice to my fellow players...spend some Prestige Points on Wands...a Wand of CLW (or two) and perhaps a more offensive wand for Rachele.
Also (if you've got the gold) get an Alchemical Silver bludgeoning weapon and a Cold Iron weapon to get around some of the more common forms of DR.

![]() |

I cant use that one cause I dont have it on my spell list.
You could use a Wand of CLW...you'd just have to make a UMD check. At +12 you'd have a good shot of hitting the DC of 20. It will be worth investing in if you ever play outside of your current playgroup; so long as Kyle & Marisan each buy one I think the group will be covered for a while.
For you I'd consider a Wand of Magic Missle or Color Spray...probably leaning toward Magic Missile. Using your crossbow will frustrate you every time you shoot into melee; Magic Missile is almost always going to do at least 2 points of damage.

Unless I'm misreading the rules, I can't purchase a 1st level wand until my Fame is 9 or greater. Table 5-3 in the Guide to Organized Play (p. 26) lists the maximum item cost available to a player based on his/her Fame score, and the maximum is 500 gp for anyone with a Fame of between 5 and 8. A 1st level wand costs 750 gp.
In the description, it says:
"A character's Fame score determines the maximum gp value of any items she can purchase from her faction, as detailed in Table 5-3 below."
So I think that this means that I can buy anything that is Always Available no matter the cost, if I have the gp to buy it, but this is the limit for buying directly from my own faction.
*EDIT*
However, wands are not on the Always Available list (see p. 25), though potions are. And on that page it says:
"Beyond the gear noted above, your character is restricted to purchasing additional items from his accumulated Chronicle sheets, or by capitalizing on his fame within his faction. Weapons, armor, equipment, magic items, and so on that are outside of these lists are not available for purchase at any time."
So, I believe this means that any of us that have 8 points or fewer of Fame can only buy 1st-level wands that are on our Chronicle sheets.
And after all this, I see now that CLW is on a Chronicle sheet of mine (From First Steps III, as is a 25-charge wand of MM). But I think I understand the buying rules better now.

You're not misreading the rules...you're just looking in the wrong place.
From page 25:
Beyond the gear noted above, your character is restricted to purchasing additional items from his accumulated Chronicle sheets, or by capitalizing on his fame within his faction. Weapons, armor, equipment, magic items and so on that are outside of these lists are not available for purchase at any time. Spending Prestige Points (Table 5-4; Page 27) lists what items & services you can buy with Prestige Points...ie "capitalizing" on your fame.
Buying a Wand of CLW is an item typically purchased by most players upon earning their first 2 Prestige Points...even if you can't use it you can loan it to a caster who can. It is considered proper etiquette to "bring your own healing to the table." However since this group will be together for the foreseeable future you can breech that etiquette for the time being.

Thanks -
But wouldn't spending those 2 prestige points to buy a 750 gp item from your faction (thus capitalizing on your fame) contradict the limits displayed in Table 5-3? Or is this the difference between "purchase" (Table 5-3) and "free purchase" (Table 5-4)? In other words, you can spend 2 PP even if your fame is insufficient for you to purchase a 750-gp wand (using gp instead of PP)?

![]() |

Yeah, Rhydderch is right. You can spend your 2 prestige points to buy a wand (or any one item) up to 750 value enough though your overall fame isn't high enough to buy such items with gold outright. It's pretty clear, from a design standpoint, they set that value of 750gp so you could get 1st level wands pretty easy early on. It's an essential purchase for low level groups with no healers, and since, as Rhydderch pointed out, you never know if you're going to have a healer, it's something they needed to make a way to get early on. Soooo...if anyone wants a wand of CLW (or any 1st level spell type wand), that's how you can get one.
Keep in mind, you can always take 20's on Use Magic Device outside or in between battles to heal up with a wand, as well. So you don't have to be an expert.
As Rhydderch also points out, one of the advantages of having an established group like this one is that it isn't required. Kyle is pretty happy to heal you. But, if you're going to take this character to a con or another group in the future, it's a good purchase to consider.

Thanks, both of you, for the clarification. I'm picking one up, even though we would likely be OK with Kyle here. That is, unless he tries to take Harboth's cookie again. ;)
Or unless Kyle goes down...which happened a few times in Part 1. Its always best to have a Plan B. (and, sometimes, a Plan C.)

![]() |

FOlks:
I will be out of pocket at mediation for most of the day. Harboth will continue to do basic things like sniff around everywhere we go before we get there and wade in to the thick of any melee combat that might ensue.
If someone wouldn't mind rolling for me, that would be great. When it comes to combat, please include a HARRRRARRRRUUUAAGGGHHH! or some such, as it helps Harboth to make his combat rolls.

Ok...I'm going through my records, and hope to have these done today for you all and get reporting!
Do me a favor...if you want to buy/sell stuff, please email me directly (jcservant at cyberlightcomics dot com) rather than posting in the board...it's easy for me to manipulate that way. With that being said,
Rhyderrch, I'll just take your's off the board. This is Rhyderrch's first adventure, right?
Rachelle...I have your last chronicle sheet showing your 2 -> 3rd xp point...would you be able to send me the other ones?
Marisan...I got your's....just email me your purchases.
Kyle is new, but I still need purchases via email...
Harboth, I got your character sheets up to level 2, so you're OK there. Just email me your transactions...
Elwyn I have your sheets plus our communication regarding your previous transaction...just email me any new transactions you have.

ME BUY COOKIES!!!
Seriously, I'm sorry to be a bit behind - should be able to let you know later today or tomorrow. Wand seems like a good idea, as does the alchemical silver bludgeoning weapon - I'll work out the details and get them to you so that I don't hold us up too much.

![]() |

Thanks, Elwyn...I have a short term memory.
For those of you staying on board, We're looking to start the next one by Thursday. The discussion board for that is up and running..
Once I get everything that I need from everyone, I'll put the chron sheets into a PDF and post the link to them here.

![]() |

Except for Rachelle, everyone can find their chronicle sheets here for a limited time. Please download them because I don't really keep backup copies.
