Aelerie Mirisen |
"I thought he might go for that." Without turning away from the kobold, Aelerie glances up to Albus and nods to indicate that he should proceed from there. Her grasp of conversational Draconic isn't such that she feels comfortable in her ability to properly phrase the questions they seek answers to. Meanwhile, she'll continue to dangle the soulspeaker as a promise of a reward for the kobold's cooperation.
Virdel Harg |
Well done Aelerie!
Virdel tells Astrianna to take a seat while the others communicate. He looks deep into her eyes, smiles distantly, and she starts to feel better.
Since we are out of combat I can cast CLW for max? Is that what we determined? Also I will cast it myself rather than use the potion we just found. Are we going to take it from him or be nice to him?
Albus Wodeward |
Albus nods to Aelerie, speaking to our guest. With time short he risks going straight to the point, saying, "சாரணர் Gurtelkep குறிப்பிடத்தக்க, நாம் பெரியவர்களுக்கும் இரும்பு அருகே வளரும் என்று ஒரு காளான் பட்டினி. நீங்கள் இந்த இடத்தில் வளர்ந்து வரும் அவர்களை அல்லது காளான்கள் சில இரும்பு கொண்ட அறைகள் பார்த்திருக்கிறீர்களா?" Albus keeps the superior mode and tone but offers minor honorifics to reduce the arrogant distance between them just enough to try to put at ease the Kobold but not enough to encourage creativity on his part.
Albus nods to Aelerie, speaking to our guest. With time short he risks going straight to the point. "Scout Gurtelkep the noticeable, We Great Ones hunger for a mushroom that grows near iron. Have you seen rooms with some iron in them or mushrooms growing in this place?" Albus keeps the superior mode and tone but offers minor honorifics to reduce the arrogant distance between them just enough to try to put at ease the Kobold but not enough to encourage creativity on his part.
Diplomacy: 1d20 ⇒ 18 I'll give it a shot.
Does Gurtelkep mean anything in Draconic?
GM Stargin |
Gurtlekep is just a name
Astrianna is fully healed by Virdel's calm and unhurried magic
Gurtelkep makes a hissing sound. Then

Aelerie Mirisen |
Thank you, Virdel! And yep, we are going with that house rule, I believe. Since all the stuff (except the potion) is small-sized, I think the ball is in your court as to whether or not we take any of his gear. ;)
Aelerie gives Albus a meaningful look at Gurtlekep's offer, before translating it for their non-Draconic speaking friends. "He would like us to untie him and give him the soulspeaker now, and he says he'll show us where the mushrooms are," she says, her wooded tone betraying her thoughts on the matter. Although it would be helpful to have a guide to lead them directly to the mushrooms and bypass any other traps which may be lying in wait for them, Aelerie, for all her kind-heartedness, was not inclined to trust the kobold.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Virdel Harg |
"Maybe we can use his equipment as an incentive for him to be honest. If he actually takes us to the mushrooms, we give him the soulspeaker and all his gear at that point."
edit- I would like to use my desire sight revelation. As a standard action, you can learn the desires of any creature you can see within 100 feet, as if you had concentrated until the third round of detect desires. As usual for detect desires, the target can attempt a Will save to negate the effect. So that would be DC 14 Will save.
Aelerie Mirisen |
Aelerie nods at Virdel's suggestion, saying, "I don't think he is lying. But that doesn't mean I'm comfortable giving him his weapons back." She glances back into the main room where Astrianna sits to see how the holy warrior is holding up. Taking the halfling's words into consideration, Aelerie looks back at Gurtlekep and makes a counter-offer.

Albus nods at Aelerie's response, but frowns a bit at the Kobolds desire to be free of bonds, his fast blow against Astrianna, worrying him. He releases his legs and helps him up, but leaves hands tied. "நீங்கள் (குறைந்த ஆனால் மரியாதையான) வேகமாக போர்வீரன். நீங்கள் காளான்கள் எடுத்து இருந்தால், நான் இலவச கைகள் மற்றும் நாம் உங்கள் நற்கூலியை அளிப்பான்."

He releases his legs and helps him up, but leaves hands tied. "You (lesser but respectable) are fast warrior. If you take to mushrooms, I'll free your hands and we will grant your reward."
Aelerie Mirisen |
Aelerie rises from her crouch and looks down on the kobold after Albus helps him up. She shakes her head immediately at Gurtlekep's new demands.
Albus Wodeward |
Albus rolls eyes at Gurtelkep's obvious bluff. After Aelerie's firm reply he loops a rope around Gurtelkep's waist and ties Gurtelkep right hand to it, then removes the bonds off the left hand which Gurtelkep could be use to free his other with time . "நீங்கள் விரைவில் நீங்கள் சொன்னதைச் செய்தார் போது, நீங்கள் மற்ற விடுவிக்க முடியாது, பயன்படுத்த ஒரு கை இல்லை. நாம் குத்துவதற்கு குத்துவதற்கு திருப்பி கொடுக்க நாம் என்ன என்று போது பரிசுகளை கொடுக்க வேண்டும்."

"You have one hand to use, soon when you have done what you promised, you can free the other. We will give back stab stab and give presents when we have that what we want."
You can assume superior and inferior modes of address as appropriate. It's hard to write, English is just too darn egalitarian.
GM Stargin |
Gurtelkep uses his limited mobility to scamper towards one of the beds in his room. He sweeps what looks like a complete set of stonemason tools into a small sack and then grabs the sack and hugs it close to him.
He scurries out of the room and into the passageway, snapping at Whisper who yips and dances back behind the destroyed statue as the kobold goes by.
The kobold leads you north in the passageway, as you go to your left you can see a room, which would be north of the library you entered by, that looks like a destroyed shrine to some god. Gurtelkep instead turns right into a small dark hall littered with mounds of debris and years worth of dead leaves. Beyond the double doors in the East of the hallyou recognize the large central yard that Virdel had surveyed through the main gates of this abandoned monastery.
Gurtelkep pushes open a door to the south of the hall with his shoulder and motions inside. The small chamber it leads into looks like it was used to store the traveling cloaks, coats, and hats of visitors to this once holy building. Now only a few moth-eaten rags hang on the pegs and a single soiled hat rests on the table.
In the Southeast corner of the room is a single mushroom of the kind Laurel described. You need at least a half dozen but this is a promising start.
I'll push back the blocks on the maps hopefully tonight.
Albus Wodeward |
Albus goes to the fungus at once verifying that it matches what we are looking for. He also checks around to see what iron is present to get a feel for the amount needed for it to grow. If there are any spores he will try to get it as well, maybe it could be grown in the future. He puts he findings in a sack. As he does so he tells the little Kobold, "இந்த பெரிதும் தொடக்கத்தில் ஆனால் பல பசி, நாம் மிகவும் வேண்டும், மற்றவர்கள் நம்மை இட்டு."

The 3 foot tall lizard-man starts to hiss and snarl and he somehow manages to maneuver his precious sack into his bound right hand. Holding onto it tight he spits at Albus while holding out his left hand.

"Hey! நடந்து கொள்!" Aelerie chastises the kobold as he scares off Whisper. As Gurtlekep leads the group to the promised mushrooms, Aelerie spends a few moments trying to coax the long-eared fox out from behind the broken statue and, if possible, into her arms where he'll safely be out of reach from the kobold's ire.
Charisma Check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8 Aelerie isn't trained in Handle Animal.
Reaching the small chamber in time to hear the tail-end of the argument, she takes stock of the situation, watching as Albus liberates the single mushroom from its nesting place before refusing the kobold's request.
"Great Scott not do as bargained. We asked for many mushrooms. You bring us to single mushroom. Tell us where others are and tiny, magic head is yours."
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 Just in case.
GM Stargin |
Whisper licks Aelerie's hand but refuses to come out of the hiding place. It does tentatively follow when the group moves north though it does stay out of the corner as the group and the kobold have their argument
Meanwhile Gurtelkep's pride wounded one too many times, pushes Virdel's hand off angrily and reaches out to try and snatch the head out of Aelerie's hand.

He makes as if to move away but his spitting rage and attempt to grab the head has given the party the drop on him.
Let him go or try and stop him? His Grab attempt pretty much started combat but you guys can end it and let him move away if you want. Great initiative rolls from the entire party though!

"இந்த பொறுமை இப்போது முடிவடைகிறது!" Albus grabs at the small creature.
"Patience for this ends now!" Albus grabs at the small creature.

Further actions depending on results.
Aelerie Mirisen |
On reflex, Aelerie jerks the string holding the soulspeaker up and out of Gurtlekep's reach when the kobold makes a grab for it. She is relieved to see Albus quickly grab the kobold up when he tries to run. She hadn't wanted to try and subdue him with her magic again, not had she wished to let him run off while angry at them. With a small sigh, she looks from Albus to Virdel, then back to Gurtlekep before suggesting, "Maybe we should let him go. It might take a little longer, but we can find those mushrooms on our own. He's held up his own end of the bargain."
Aelerie says, carefully trying to loop the soulspeaker around the kobold's neck, mindful of his sharp, little teeth.

Albus doesn't seem too pleased with the little creature, but seems willing to follow Aelerie's lead. He follows the Kobold, if he leads to more mushrooms.

The Kobold clutches his small sack with his bound right hand and strokes the soulspeaker, which looks like a particularly hideous amulet on him, with his left. His tail lashes back and forth rapidly, the only physical clue to his emotions as his expressionless gaze moves between all five of you in turn.
Then he says
He leads you north into the passageway to where it turns sharply to your right (East) and then to a door. A little bit in the lead he throws the door open with his left hand and rushes in screaming

"That little double-crossing sneak!" Aelerie fumes after Gurtlekep leads them into a trap. Despite this, she is more disappointed in the kobold than angry with him, and makes a mental note to leave him tied up in the closet the next time they get their hands on him.
Albus Wodeward |
Albus is unsurprised at the little Kobold's treachery. He wastes no time on that matter and moves to deal with the wolves. With them so close he'll attempt to close to melee range, drawing his weapon. He'll follow with an attack on the nearest wolf.

Top Of Round One
Moments after Gurtelkep disappears into the room a howling wolf leaps out of the door at Astrianna who is stalwartly holding the front line.
Wolf Charge Attack: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 2 = 7
The wolf snaps at empty air as the paladin swings back.
Bottom Of Round One
Virdel casts a spell to bloster the morale of his comrades just as Astrianna completes her counter attack.
Bless LongSword: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
The swing is true and slashes deep into the wolf's hide drawing blood.
The paladin steps in to allow the ranger to step in and swing his axe but Ablus misses.
Aelerie up
Even over the howling and shouting the group can hear a door further in the room opening and slamming shut. It seems like the bound Gurtelkep has managed to escape.
Another wolf behind this one. Astrianna informs the group.
Aelerie Mirisen |
Aelerie roots around in the leather pouch at her belt and fishes out a small strip of cured leather. Running her fingers over the bit of leather, the arcanist weaves a spell of protection over herself. "Ilmaa kevyempää, vahvempaa kuin teräs."

Round Two
The wolf wounded by Astrianna snaps at Albus.
Wolf: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Trip Attempt: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
This time the bite is strong and the wolf twists savagely while holding on to the ranger, wrestling him to the ground with a sickening thud.
It prances away then, to allows its comrade to come in and bite at the suddenly vulnerable Albus.
Wolf: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
But in its excitement the second wolf fails to get through Albus' armor.
The coordination of the brutal attacks seems far more than mere animal cunning.
Whisper gives out panicked yips and stays behind Aelerie as blood flows on both sides. The echoes of the fight resound through the abandoned halls of the cold and grey former monastery.
Albus takes 6 damage and is on the ground in front of the door. Astrianna is one space East. One wolf is hurt but five foot stepped into the room. The one in the door is fully healthy. You can suggest actions for Astrianna as IC conversation if you want.
Albus Wodeward |
Albus misses his swing as the wolf lunges at him. With a vicious bite and perfect twist, Albus is knocked to the ground injured, fortunately the other wolf was not quite ready and misses his chance to finish him off. With two wolves at ready and in a weak attack position, Albus rolls into a partial ball with his axe in a blocking position.
Albus goes full defense. +4 to ac, no AOO or flanking.
Virdel Harg |
Virdel draws out his crossbow and attempts to find a clear shot at the wounded wolf.

GM Stargin |
Unfortunately Virdel the combat is happening through a small door, both sides are pretty much bottle necking each other. You can't attack.
Astrianna grabs Albus and pulls him Eastto safety. The door is now open for a wolf to come through!
Astrianna did a Drag combat maneuver on Albus. Albus is one space east of door in passage. Astrianna is two spaces East of door in passage. Virdel and Aelerie are on the West side of the door. The door is now not being blocked by anybody and there is a very angry wolf right on the other side. Virdel and Aelerie are up.
Aelerie Mirisen |
With the doorway clear, Aelerie calls on her little understood arcane gift to summon help from another plane. A dog the color of the night sky appears in the space Albus had vacated, blocking the doorway and giving the group a little breathing room. Bearing its teeth at the wolf nearest to it, the celestial dog gives a deep, lowing growl before lunging forward to snap at the wolf.
Using 1 point from Arcane Reservoir to use Conjurer's Focus. Stat block for celestial dog is in the alias.

I'll allow Virdel to stand on the same space as the prone Albus, not RAW maybe, but hey!
Virdel proves himself noble in deed as well as social status as he bravely dodges past a wolf that is larger than he is that bites at thin air as the halfing rushes by. Making it to the other side of the door Virdel kneels to touch Albus, healing him completely!
Aelerie summons a heavenly creature. The divine canine bites into its earthly lupine foe causing deep damage.
Round Three
The Wolf at the door snarls at Aelerie's summon and attacks!
Wolf: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
It is befuddled by the celestial nature of the opponent though and misses. It moves back to allow its comrade in and have a go.
Wolf: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
But the other wolf has the same result.
Party up. Dog is in the doorway unharmed. Both wolves are hurt. One in room. One in doorway. Albus and Virdel are sharing the same space so if Albus gets up Virdel will get squashed against the wall and will only be able to take a move action to squeeze out until Albus moves out of the square!
Albus Wodeward |
"Thanks, Master Harg, I feel better."
Maintaining his block with the shaft of the Axe, Albus pivots the axehead weakly across the floor toward the wolf in the room. (I am assuming that wolf is adjacent.)
Albus is fighting defensively. Attack roll -6, AC+2,prone, AC-4, total-2 threatens adjacent squares, may flank if conditions are right.
Greataxe to hit: 1d20 + 3 + 1 - 4 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 1 - 4 - 2 = 2 Makes a threat on a 20. Blessed, prone, fighting defensively.

Virdel is squashed against the wall in the very very crowded passageway as Albus struggles to his feet.
The wolf tries to bite the ranger as the young human gets up
AOO Wolf: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
And its jaws only miss Albus as the edge of the wall gets in the way of its attack.
Both of you have cover from each other which means +4 AC
The ranger tries to swing at the small part of the wolf he can see through the narrow door but misses widely.
Dog, Aelerie, and Astrianna, and Virdel are up. Virdel has a move action.
Aelerie Mirisen |
The celestial dog cleverly dodges its enemies' attacks, the constellation-like pattern of twinkling lights in its coat shifting as it moves. Taking advantage of its current target's weakened state, the summon moves in to try to catch the wolf's neck in its teeth.
Bite: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
If this attack drops the wolf, the dog will step into the room to square off against its first target (and free up the doorway!).
Aelerie presses her back against the stone wall of the corridor, the wand gifted to her by Master Hildrensocks clutched tightly in one hand.
GM Stargin |
The wolf in the doorway gives a strangled yelp as the dog bites into it deep drawing not only blood but muscle and sinew. Still it doesn't fall.
Retcon time. Wolf didn't take an AOO on Albus. It took it on Astrianna instead.
Astrianna pushes her way past the space containing the prone Albus and Virdel and then Aelerie's summoned attack dog. As she does the wolf tries to bite her but misses due to the cover provided by the corner of the doorway. She stands at the western lip of the doorway and swings her longsword at the wolf.
Bless LongSword: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
But the narrow space allowed by the door comes to the aid of all concerned yet again.
Virdel still only has a move action as he's in the same space as an attacking character
Dog is right in front of door. Albus is lying prone just east of the door with Virdel squeezed in behind him. Astrianna is just west of the door and Aelerie is next to her.
Whisper starts yipping as the sounds of lupine violence fills the building.
Interesting fact time. Apparently Wolves and dogs are the same species. They're all lupine! the term canine is kind of obsolete!
Aelerie Mirisen |
Realizing that the cramped confines are working against them as much as for them, Aelerie peeks around Astrianna's armored form and offers up a suggestion. "Albus, if you can stand, maybe we can lure the wolves out into the hall. If we each step back, they'll have to come out to attack us, leaving them vulnerable from both sides." Theoretically, it was a sound idea, but given the wolves' seemingly preternatural cleverness, Aelerie couldn't be sure they would fall for it. Still, she thought it worth a try, particularly since every moment they spent fighting the wolves off was a moment the traitorous kobold could get to the mushrooms first.
Virdel Harg |
Dog genetics are pretty fascinating. The fact that all the different breeds are so varied and can be developed so quiokly yet they can all successfully breed with any dog or wolf anywhere in the world is remarkable.
Virdel scurries away from Albus now that the woodsman is feeling well again.

The other wolf comes in with a snarling attack.

It misses.
Bless LongSword: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
The doorjamb comes to the rescue yet again.
Party up. One Wounded wolf in door. Dog has no cover. Albus does.
Aelerie Mirisen |
Aelerie's celestial companion manages to avoid its foe's teeth once again, weaving away before retaliating with a powerful bite of its own.
Bite: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Smite Evil: 1d4 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 1 = 8 I think this is the wolf that I used Smite Evil against in round two. If not, -1 from damage.
Aelerie moves a few steps to the east, creating an empty space between herself and Astrianna. Whistling to draw the celestial dog's attention, the novice spellcaster tries to get it to come to her and clear the doorway by patting her leg.
Charisma Check (Come): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
GM Stargin |
The dog bests the wolf yet again, this time permanently. The jaws lock around the wolf's throat and don't let go until the wolf stops struggling.
With nothing else to occupy its attention the dog consents to obey Aelerie and comes over. Whisper shies away, confused and wary of Aelerie's new companion.
Out of combat.
