Examining Pack
Foxglove find several loose sheets with writing and pictures of plants. She also finds what appears to be a journal.
Linguistics: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Both seem to be written in the same language which she does not understand.
She does recognize the language as gnome. Alk can also see the papers she is holding.
Initiative
Harad: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Attacker: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Harad proceeds to hex 2104 looking into the thorns as he passes. He hears a rustling behind him but before he can act he is attacked.
Bite: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 The attack misses. Harad quickly turns around to see a giant spider retreating into a borrow which has what appears to be a grassy lid, now open with the spider in the mouth of the borrow. He goes total defense as he calls out "I think I may have found something."

Alk Caskenflagon |

This is assuming Alk saw the spider attack. If not I can change my actions.
Alk's attention is ripped from the contents of the pack as a blur of motion is seen from the corner of his eye. He looks up to see something swiftly retreat from Harad, and immediately Alk snaps to action as Harad calls for his attention. He pulls his bow from his back and notches an arrow as he moves (to 0816, assuming I can get there with a 40' double move) and peers around, trying to get a better view of what the group is fighting as he shouts to Harad, "What is it!?"
Double move 35' to 0816, drawing bow as part of the movement.

Harad Navar |

Alk can not see Harad directly as the thorn bushes are 6' high. He was able to be alerted that something was going on where he can not see. You may draw the shortbow during a move action. The tall grass in 0910 and 1010 makes those hexes difficult terrain which means it takes 10 feet of movement to cross a 5' hex.
You can draw your shortbow in a double move (40') to hex 0210 or 0412. You may spend 10 feet of movement to cross 1011 and the move to 0715 to complete a double move (still drawing your shortbow, but waiting to shoot until you see something to shoot.) However, you still will not have a clear view from any of these hexes. You will have to move around the thorn bushes to get a clear view.
Harad shouts back "I have been attacked by a large spider, but am unhurt."

stealthy redhead |

ok, I'm confused.. we are spread among two different maps, 1406-0410b.jpg and 1406-0410spider.jpg, that overlap so that hex 0111 in the first is the same as hex 2101 in the second? And the spider used a ranged attack and is 20' from Harad? (Assuming 5' hexes)
Foxglove runs towards Harad, drawing weapons (rapier+dagger) on the way. Packet and papers are left on the stump where she was spreading them out.
Double move (60'), presumably starting in 1110. I'm assuming 0414 is difficult terrain but the path otherwise is clear, making it a 55' path to hex 0215/2295 next to Harad.
"Keep it busy, try to outflank!"
I hope shortlegs can keep up, I'd hate to have all those eyes on me

Harad Navar |

Yes, unfortunately I use the same template for both 5' per hex encounter maps. In Examining Pack map, Harad is in hex 0114. But in the Spider Attack map he is in hex 2104. I do not have a good way to make the numbers consistent across two sets of encounter maps. Darn open area encounters.

Harad Navar |

Foxglove double moves to be next to Harad by moving to 0614 (25' of movement), then to 1513 and 1413 (10' = 35' so far), then difficult terrain through 0414 (10' = 45' so far), to 0215 (10' = 55' so far). Foxglove still has 5' of movement left. The thorn bushes have vicious thorns. She takes 1d4 ⇒ 3 hp of damage, save for half with Acrobatics skill check DC15.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12 check fails so take full 3 hp damage.
To recap:
Round 1 (in 1406-0510)
- Harad sees something; pack and objects near stump. He uses a point of ki and moves 60 ft to stump (hex 1211).
- Alk looks for himself, dismounts and ties horse to small shrub.
- Foxglove moves to 1708 with daggers in each hand.
- Cat stretches and tries to see more about stump. Emits low growl.
Round 2
- Harad moves 5’ to 1111 and examines contents which he identifies as herbalist tools and samples. Finding no tracks he moves to hex 0717
- Foxglove moves to stump (hex 1111).
- Alk moves to stump (hex 1010).
- Cat narrows eyes at Alk and jumps off Carrot into tall grass.
Round 3
- Seeing nothing amiss between here and the next stand of trees, Harad moves to hex 2707 to look behind thorn bushes. (he is now in 1406-0410)
- Foxglove opens pack to examine contents. She finds loose sheets and a journal written in gnome.
- Alk looks at contents with Foxglove.
- Cat moves unseen
Round 4
- Trapdoor spider uses spring attack to try and bite Harad, but misses then retreats back to its borrow.
- Harad goes fully defensive and calls out to rest of party.
- Foxglove double moves to be next to Harad, taking 3 hp of damage passing through the thorn bushes.
- Alk moves to hex 0715 while drawing out his bow.
- Cat continues to move unseen
Round 5 - everyone in 1406-0410
- Spider uses spring attack (15' out to 2105) to attack new target, Foxglove. Bite: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 bite misses, then completes move back to borrow (15' to 1807)
- Harad moves wide to get to 1706 waiting for Foxglove to get in the flank. (see Current Position Map)
- Foxglove actions
- Alk actions
- Cat moves unseen

stealthy redhead |

Foxglove spots the spiders early and focuses her attention on them - not on the uneven ground. As a result she stumbles just as she planned to dive graciously between the thorny branches.
"Ouch! Ack! Curses! That stings!" Foxglove curses the thorns as she ends up with sharp thorns down her neckline. Her attention is still on the spiders though, and she easily dodges the attack.
Seeing that Harad understands, she moves into the flanking position (1907) and lunges with her rapier.
last round the spider was visible in the opening, I'm assuming that's still the case and it can be flanked.
rapier flanking attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 141d6 + 1 + 2d6 ⇒ (6) + 1 + (5, 6) = 18
umm.. can I petition for a higher ground advantage for another +1 to hit? or a new set of dice - these aren't working as intended.

Harad Navar |

Alk has a -4 for firing into combat, but still hits spider
Round 6 - Current Positions
- Spider seems badly wounded but does not appear to be smart enough to retreat. It attacks Foxglove Bite: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8 but misses.
- Harad attacks with his feet in a flurry of blows; Kick: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18, hit for 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7; Kick: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20, hit for 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
- Spider kicks out with its legs as it falls down the burrow (5') dead.

stealthy redhead |

"Are there more?"
Foxglove tries to slash any spiderweb threads connected to the trapdoor, then peeks down into the burrow.
If this spider trap its victims in cocoons, that gnome may actually be down here. But more likely inside the itsy bitsy spider tummy.
"I think we're looking for a lost gnome herbalist. I fear we just discovered what happened."
perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20, +4 vs hidden objects

Harad Navar |

I forgot to add the +2 to Harad's attacks for flanking. Good thing he didn't need it. Foxglove's attack just hit the spider.
Foxglove can see that the burrow descends 5 feet to the body of the spider, then turns to slope downward in the direction of hex 1707. That part of the burrow is in shadow for the first 5' with darkness farther along the slope. She can not see anything else than the burrow and the dead spider. The burrow is 5' in diameter.

stealthy redhead |

"I'll poke it again to make sure"
Foxglove jumps down into the burrow and drives her rapier through the spider's head and into the ground below (Coup de grace) unless something startles her. And wipes the slime off blade. "Yuck!"
Realizing that she once more have acted a bit prematurely, she sheepishly adds "um.. do you guys have a light? My lantern's back in the saddlebags" She peeks into the dark tunnel, keeping her guard up while waiting for light.
"Spider didn't hit me, but I got blasted thorns stuck in my neck and front bits. I'll be fine, but no plunging necklines for me the next few days"
You can almost hear her mischevious smile down in the darkness
"Though there may be a rare opportunity tonight to rub ointment all over my chest"

Harad Navar |

Harad takes off his pack and retrieves a torch. From one of his belt pouches he takes out flint and steel and begins to light the torch. Once it is lit he hands it to Foxglove saying "I think you might find open flame better than a lantern. If the tunnel branches, stop. One of us should be there at the branch if you go down one of them to prevent something coming up the other branch."

Alk Caskenflagon |

Foxglove's slightly crass comments amuse Alk; he says to her in a jesting manner, "Careful ye don't offer anything you ain't willin' to go through with, lady."
As Harad speaks to Foxglove about exploring, Alk interrupts, "Wait! A light'll attract anything that migh' be in there. I don' need a light, so maybe I should be the one to do this. I'm quite good at movin' quietly meself." If Foxglove takes him up on the offer, Alk lends her a hand in getting out of the hole.

stealthy redhead |

Foxglove's slightly crass comments amuse Alk; he says to her in a jesting manner, "Careful ye don't offer anything you ain't willin' to go through with, lady."
"Good thing I didn't actually offer anything then, hm?" She teases Alk. "Maybe I was only talking to myself"
but no innuendo about exploring tight tunnels, since she got a response from AlkAs Harad speaks to Foxglove about exploring, Alk interrupts, "Wait! A light'll attract anything that migh' be in there. I don' need a light, so maybe I should be the one to do this. I'm quite good at movin' quietly meself." If Foxglove takes him up on the offer, Alk lends her a hand in getting out of the hole.
"It's not about moving quiet - we've already slashed enough webs that any spiders down there already know where we are. But if you want to go first, by all means."
She makes no move to get out, but instead makes room for Alk to slip past. She happily accepts the torch from Harad.
"Smart thinking. This should burn the webs and keep the smaller vermin away."
To Alk, with a curtsy: "After you, good sir!"
If the tunnel is long, she intends to follow some 10' behind him. She'll be looking especially for signs of victims recently dragged down here: dropped objects, blood etc. She's still hoping to find a gnome herbalist, or she wouldn't have entered the burrow.

Harad Navar |

With Alk's darkvision and the light from Foxglove's torch you can see that this earthen burrow extends quite a way. The burrow is roughly 5' in diameter and slops down 5' (leaving 5' of earth above) then levels out. You can see large roots above you, possibly from the large tree above. The burrow goes straight ahead for at least 60' (according to Alk's darkvision) and about 30' from the entrance it begins to be littered with old bones. They seem to have been disturbed regularly by the passing of the spider.
Perception check to finds anything among the bones
Foxglove: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Alk: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
You do not find anything noteworthy among the bones.
Perception check 80' farther along
Foxglove: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
Alk: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
At 80' down the burrow Alk notices a patch of earth to his left that seems to be a round plug of earth held together by some sort of sticky substance. Alk can also see ahead that the burrow seems to be blocked 40' ahead of them.

Alk Caskenflagon |

Alk stops at the seeming plug, testing it by gently touching it to make sure his hand won't stick to it. If there's no issues Alk will pull and push on it with both hands in an effort to move it.
Strength, if needed: 1d20 ⇒ 11
If that's not sufficient, Alk will whisper to Foxglove, "This section looks like another trap door. Could ye help me get i' open?"
Can take 10 to Aid Another for a Strength check if Foxglove's aid is needed. How embarrassing for Alk, the lithe human woman is stronger than him. ^_^;

Can take 10 to Aid Another for a Strength check if Foxglove's aid is needed. How embarrassing for Alk, the lithe human woman is stronger than him. ^_^;
lithe indeed, but like most dancers a very strong core musculature and the firmest little... nevermind.
Foxglove jams the torch behind a root, fastens her grip in the plug, puts her foot up on the wall and pushes.
strength check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
She manages to pull her handhold loose and not much else.
(btw per core rules you can't take 10 to aid).
"Digging around with bare hands is... I mean I specifically told him I wasn't signing up for that!"
She starts pouting, when suddenly a thought strikes her
".. which is exactly why we bought shovels this morning! Haaaraaad!"
We could probably take 20 with aid for a total of 23, but using sharp tools and technique over brute strength is more Foxglove's style

stealthy redhead |

She walks back towards Harad, explaining
"Harad, it looks like a second trapdoor further in, but it's stuck. If you fetch a shovel, Alk can probably dig through. The smallest one, there's not much swinging room down there."
As Harad runs off, she turns back to keep an eye on the passage.

Harad Navar |

"I'll bring up the pony and horse while I do that. I do not want to leave them unattended for too long."
A few minutes later Harad hands Foxglove the two shovels he bought at the Golden Eye. Foxglove takes them back down the burrow and hands one to Alk.
Before the Plug

stealthy redhead |

Foxglove 'keeps watch' with blade and torch, but starts drifting further down the tunnel while Alk digs. The spare shovel is left there conveniently as a service in case Alk breaks the first one.
Dwarves probably feel right at home digging in a cramped tunnel. I'll just scout a bit over here while he enjoys himself. Or something.
if it's more than a couple of minutes digging she'll have moved at least 30' down unless Alk calls her back.

Harad Navar |

It takes 4 rounds for Alk to loosen the plug which then falls forward into the burrow. The light of the torch reveals a short branch of the burrow, 10' deep. You can see a prone form in the back of the area, but it's details are obscured by the swarm of spiders covering the body and the floor.

"Eeep!
Foxglove jams the rapier in the ground, snatches the oil flask from her bandolier and pours it on the swarm and ground, lighting it with the torch in her other hand.
"Fire at will, Alk"
as I recall the rules, this should be enough to cover a 5'x5' area which should be enough to cover the passage without hitting ourselves or the body. The rapier is dropped behind her, not in the burning area.
(dang, I was sure there was a bottle of alchemist fire in the latest equipment list - serves me right for not being dilligent with file versions).

Harad Navar |

In Round 1 Foxglove can drop her rapier (free action), draws a flask of oil from her bandoleer (a move equivalent action), and applies it to the ground (a standard action). You can apply it to the hex immediately in front of you (0215), or you can take a 5' step into that hex and apply the oil to the 5' (spanning 2 hexes) just inside the branch entrance. You can not apply the oil around a corner. To get the area inside the branch you will have to move.
You will have to remove the torch from it's place stuck between roots on the wall (a move equivalent action) and ignite the oil (a standard action) in Round 2.
Please choose before the swarm can take its action next.

Harad Navar |

Round 1
1) Foxglove draws a flask of oil from her bandoleer, moves 5' to hex 0215, and applies it to the ground (5'x5' in branch entrance).
2) Swarm expands out into hexes 0215 (Foxglove) and 0115 (Alk), while enough spiders remain to fill the branch. [So some of the swarm is in the oil and can be damaged if the oil is lit]
Round 1 after swarm moves
Swarm crawls over Alk and Foxglove doing damage and requiring saves
Alk: Swarm Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2; Poison DC11: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18 saves; Distraction DC11: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 fails
Foxglove: Swarm Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3; Poison DC11: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21 saves; Distraction DC11: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12 saves
Alk is nauseated and can only do a move action this round.
3) Foxglove may act.

Alk Caskenflagon |

Ouch, nauseated is not a fun condition.
Taking a move action to 0513.
Alk is overtaken by the rapidly approaching swarm, not having enough time to react before the bugs are crawling onto him. The skittering feet moving up his legs and bites he already feels on his calves cause Alk to balk, and he retreats from the swarm as he swats at the bugs already on him.
Sorry about that Foxglove. Hopefully I'm not nauseated this round so I can start kicking spider butt.

Harad Navar |

Both of you will have to make a Fort save or be nauseated each round when you are in a swarmed area when it is the swarm's turn. Also, since there are so many of the little critters you do not think that melee weapon attacks will do any good.
How far down the tunnel does Alk attempt to go? You may do a single move, 20' in Alk's case. Foxglove is not nauseated and can act normally next round.

stealthy redhead |

as posted before, Foxy runs towards Harad and the exit, yelling for fire or magic. No intention of staying in the swarm if she can help it. She has more oil in the saddlebags but nothing very useful on her body except the torch in hand (the rapier is buried under spiderlings somewhere).
She is assuming that since Alk has magic he probably will be ok...

Harad Navar |

Round 1 Recap
1) Foxglove removed a pint of oil and spread it in the entrance of the branch on the swarm. The torch is still stuck in the wall of the burrow.
2) Swarm moves out to cover Alk and Foxglove. Damages Alk (now 22 hp) and Foxglove (now 28 hp); Alk nauseated.
3) Alk does single move to hex 0513 away from swarm.
4) Harad Perception DC10: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20 hears Foxglove shout, retrieves (standard action) 2 pints of oil from his backpack on the ground (placed there after he retrieved the animals), jumps down into burrow (5' of movement), uses another point of ki (swift action, 7 points left) to add 20' to movement (55' left), then moves 55' down burrow.
Hex 1406-0410 End of Round 1 [EDIT: missed your post to move to 0513, corrected here]
Round 2
1) Foxglove actions (may want to change as she sees Harad coming toward her; she can use a move equivalent action to remove torch from wall, then standard action to set the oil she has just poured on swarm ablaze)
2) Swarm's Actions
3) Alk's Actions
4) Harad's Actions

Harad Navar |

From the current position Alk will have to move back in Round 2, then as a standard action remove the torch from the wall, then as a free action drop it into the oil. This will leave him in the swarm. If Foxglove does it, she can remove the torch (standard), drop it into the oil (free), and move out of the swarm. She is standing right next to the torch. If Alk had the spark cantrip he could do it from where he stands.

stealthy redhead |

The torch is still stuck in the wall of the burrow.
(ack! thursdays's post was intended to mean that she stood watch (and actually drifted some 30' down the tunnel) with rapier in one hand and torch in the other (ie held the torch as an excuse not to dig). But since I didn't object to the starting positions, I'll roll with this.)
Foxglove is optimistic enough to assume that even a dropped torch will light the oil. She dislodges the torch (move action), leaves it on the oiled floor (free action) and moves towards (or even past) Harad. (move action)
if the torch somehow fizzles, at least she's close to the exit... She doesn't seriously believe those little spiders can eat a dwarf alive, but they are icky and stingy and literally extremely creepy.

Harad Navar |

You have seen Alk move past you, so he is out of the swarm.
Round 2
1) Foxglove gets the torch and drops it into the oil she spread on the swarm. The oil catches fire doing Fire Damage: 1d3 ⇒ 2 hp to the swarm. She then moves 25' (moving 30' will put her squeezed with Harad in the same hex) to hex 0712, just in front of Harad.
2) Swarm, although damaged, moves 20' and swarms over Alk again. Swarm Damage to Alk: 1d6 ⇒ 6 hp (Alk now at 16 hp); Alk Fort vs Poison DC11: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21 saves; Alk Fort save vs Distraction DC11: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17 Saves. Alk is no longer nauseated from the first swarming, and is not nauseated by the second swarming, although he is still covered in spiders.
1406-0410 Round 2 after swarm action
3) Alk's Actions
4) Harad's Actions

Alk Caskenflagon |

When the swarm chases Alk down, he knows he has to do something to stop the roiling mass's advance. He adjust his position a bit (to 0613) and attempts to cast summon monster II.
Concentration check: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
He summons a Small Fire Elemental to hex 0513.
You would get to decide my elemental's actions at that point.

Harad Navar |

Round 2
3) Alk does 5' shift to hex 0613 and begins to cast summon monster II. Casting this spell is a full round action. The small fire elemental will appear in hex 0513 on Alk's turn in Round 3. Alk has already taken damage from swarm so ending his move in the swarm this round does not generate a second attack. The swarm will damage him again in Round 3 before he completes his spell (if it hasn't moved). Alk's Concentration Check of 24 means that he will get the spell off even if the swarm does max damage (6 hp) in Round 3
4) Harad moves to hex 0314 and empties both oil flasks into hex 0414. Swarm damage (because he ended his move in swarm): 1d6 ⇒ 1 hp; Harad Fort save vs Poison DC11: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7 Fails, takes Str damage: 1d2 ⇒ 2 ; Harad Fort save vs Distraction DC11: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20 saves, is not nauseated.
End of Round 2
Round 3
Foxglove's oil is still burning this round.
1) Foxglove's Actions
2) Swarm's Actions
3) Alk's Actions
4) Harad's Actions

stealthy redhead |

Foxglove moves 30' towards the exit, then looks back to see how the others are doing.
That must have been the gnome herbalist back there. Did he move or was that just the spiders crawling on him? Ouch, Harad is covered. Eek! Get out of my hair!
"Burn them all, lest they grow the size of their mother"

Harad Navar |

Round 2
1) Foxglove moves 30' to hex 1309, turns and looks back toward her companions.
2) Swarm remains in place and attacks Harad & Alk.
Harad: Swarm damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2 hp, now 35 hp; Fort save vs poison DC11: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24 saves, no more Str damage; Fort save vs Distraction DC11: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 saves, is not nauseated
Alk: Swarm damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4 hp, now at 12 hp, concentration check made for damage; Fort save vs poison DC11: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24 saves, no Str damage; Fort save vs Distraction DC11: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 fails, is nauseated, can not concentrate so spell fails
3) Alk's Action (single move only, can move out of swarm to hex 1011 or 0215)
4) Harad's actions

Harad Navar |

No, the spell is lost.
Round 3
4) Harad shifts 5' to hex 0215, picks up torch (move equivalent action) and throws it at hex 0414 Ranged attack AC 5: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23 and hits the oil. It starts to burn the swarm Fire damage: 1d3 ⇒ 2 hp, total 4 hp of damage so far
At end of round Foxglove's oil burns out. (A flask of oil burns 2 rounds, 1d3 hp damage per round. Two flacks still only do 1d3 hp of damage, but for 4 rounds.)
End of Round 3
Round 4
1) Foxglove's actions
2) Swarm's actions
3) Alk's actions
4) Harad's actions

stealthy redhead |

thrice-damned! Alk's magic fails. Desna protect me!
Foxglove moves in front on Alk (to 0911).
"Alk, focus! I'll cover you. Ten seconds before I run."
Buying the wizard some time seems to be the best tactic here.
EDIT: i'm assuming there's no way to aid Alk or increase my own defenses. So just standing here as bait in case swarm chases Alk. At least it may have to move away from Harad to get me.
