I need a little bit of help with the setting. What I would want to do first is make contact with several people. The cousin, the detective in charge of the case, maybe a reporter. How would that happen? Crack out the laptop and email, text, phone, legwork? I just don't want to strike the wrong tone.
Honestly any of those would be fine. Don't think to hard about it. Whatever you feel makes sense for your character go for it.
Should I make some effort to connect with Lucas before they get to much farther? I suppose all I have to do is call him

Xander is pretty hardcore. He went in with a knife got chased by a satyr and went right back in and is dealing with a giant plant...With a knife. The way Xander shakes off seeing these strange creatures makes me wonder if he has had dealings with things of this nature in the past. Folks in this world are way more open to the supernatural and such since it is not so rare as in our world.
