Ember stay quiet and avoid answering the bugbear's questions. A Lowly beast such as him, wouldn't be here if wasn't for her father, and how it dare to talk to them as equals, but it was not her place to question this or offend their host.

She drank and eat, and when things were settled, she leaves with the others, without saying anything.

The sorceress tilts her head as she regards the bugbear, letting patches of shadow play across her eyes and entwine around her fingers before she answers.

A month? I see no reason why the garrison cannot be brought to its knees within that time, made ripe for your forces to pluck

she leans in

We would be well to have done our work and departed by that time as well, lest your horde have some disregard for telling non-bugbear friend from foe...

"Thorn has faith in you. If you weren't his best, he wouldn't have sent you. Do this and your names will be legend. and don't lose the rocket, without it you have no way to signal the attack. If there is nothing else, let me escort you back to your ship. I don't think I can guarantee your safety if you stay in the camp this night. Hail Asmodeus!"

With that, you are escorted back to the ship, where you can see the captain and a number of sailors standing nervous guard.

Kargeld speaks to you once you are onboard, "I'm going to moor a ways down the shore. I don't trust that big brute. That gleam in his eye. You can tell he's plotting something... A bugbear shouldn't be that smart. The night is all but spent, so we will lay up for the next day and I'll ferry you across the lake under the cover of darkness tomorrow night. I'll put you ashore a couple of hours walk from Tower Balentyne and the small town of Aldencross that rests in its shadow. Then I wash my hands of you and whatever plot you're hatching."

The next day goes as described and the next night you find the ship coasting ashore on the far side of the lake.

Just a reminder that you are tasked with tying up the loose ends of the ship and crew, so feel free to get that rolling. Anywho, I'll be away for the next week or so and we can resolve things when I get back.

Have a great week.

I am glad, it is only him," Arthur replies to the captain's concern as he makes his way aboard the Frosthammer.

Arthur calmly awaits the night and what is to happen, he is however unsure of how it will be carried out. Discreetly he inquires: "What after we reach the shore?"

As the party is alone, Lucetta mentions quietly

Nodding his accept Arthur begins to contemplate the ambush. Keeping his weapon and shield with ranged he rests by the mast in full armour.

When in council, Albrέkt stoicly listens then nods in agreement at the potential plan;

"Ja. Bevor zhey die, zhey vill kennen fear..."

The unholy warrior then leers his crack toothed smile and makes preparation for blood-letting...

Albrέkt dons his armour and moves to Kaynen's shoulder, trusting that the rake will prove distraction enough so one or both of them can strike.

I will need some help sailing her out to deeper waters though."

Once they have been stripped of all valuables, the wretched warrior will begin to hack apart the corpses of the dead Northmen.

On the captain you find an iron key which opens the sea chest on the ship. Inside you find 6100gp worth of coin and a small ivory statue of a nude mermaid (150gp). Between the dead there are 6 short swords, 6 shortbows, 7 studded leather armours and masterwork greataxe. None of the equipment has any distinguishing features. (#loot)

With a little effort you manage to scuttle the craft in the lake and its clear waters are briefly stained red as the crew's blood and entrails dip below the waves.

You are close now. Just a few miles from here sits the small market town of Aldencross and less than a mile from there is the watchtower of Balentyne – your goal. Already Sakkarot’s horde gathers and prepares to move. Within two weeks, they will be in a small valley north of the lake awaiting your signal. Fire the rocket into the air at just the right moment and you will take the first step towards claiming vengeance against Talingarde.

Destiny has taken you here. Destiny has given you a mission. There is no doubt that the future of this green and pleasant land lies in your hands. You could go to that town right now and warn them of the plots of the sinister Cardinal Thorn. You could give yourself up and face the justice you deserve. You could turn back from the horror and the slaughter that you are going to inflict upon these Mitran sheep. This is that moment. This is the turning point. After this, there is no going back.

If you ask me, these patrols are a waste of time. They're just an excuse for Varning to get out of the tower and gallivant around the countryside instead of doing his fair share of guard duty.

#2: Balentyne’s magister, that creepy Tacitus, has been spending a lot of time working on something in his tower! I don’t know what it is, but it’s said that something unnatural was recovered from the north.

#3: I’ve heard that Father Donnagin was sent here after the church demoted him from bishop. He got into some sort of trouble – serious trouble I’d wager to be banished to the Watch Wall.

When Albrέkt Heißhungrig gathers the knot, Ember listen carefully and is ready to give councel

Okay here's the rumours (and my take on them) the antipaladin says:

#1: I hear Captain Varning is leading another patrol out tomorrow. I wonder how long they’ll be gone this time? The last time they were gone for five days! If you ask me, these patrols are a waste of time. They're just an excuse for Varning to get out of the tower and gallivant around the countryside instead of doing his fair share of guard duty.

Do we risk an ambush? Take him out while he's in the wilds? Or at the least indispose him allowing one of us to assume him as a doppleganger?

”Yes! But not at this moment, the rumor suggests he often leads patrols and once we get closer to our infernal time, then it’s the time to strike hard and ruthlessly!” she says her eyes light with zealot flame.

==//==

#2: Balentyne’s magister, that creepy Tacitus, has been spending a lot of time working on something in his tower! I don’t know what it is, but it’s said that something unnatural was recovered from the north.

Very interesting... Could be a rotten apple in the orchard? At the very least if we find out what he's up to we could blackmail his assistance??

”Never trust mages!” she says not caring if the arcane members of the knot might get offended. ”Too unpredictable, and this land is too suspicious about the arcane. We need to know more before we decide if the magister can be used. And remember he is a magister. One does not get to that position easly.”

==//==

#3: I’ve heard that Father Donnagin was sent here after the church demoted him from bishop. He got into some sort of trouble – serious trouble I’d wager to be banished to the Watch Wall.

Serious trouble suggests another who could be malleable... but as a priest he could expose us, so treading carefully as we investigate would be prudent.

”The priest must die! The only difference its when!” the zealot says again ”If we can convert him and make he pleads his loyalty to the Dark Father, then we kill him after he betrays his allies. If he don’t, we kill him as before we kill his allies.” she says with certainty. There was no chance in hell she would allow a cleric of mitra, even a renegade alive.

==//==

#4: There’s a pack of dwarves in town led by a grumpy short fellow named Barnabus Eisenbauch. They’re here to fix up the watchtower or so I’ve heard. A hard working fellow -- just don’t challenge him to a drinking contest. He’ll drink you under the table every time!

Someone can take him on? If we beat him then he might have secrets to reveal or at the very least earn a place in his crew (and access to the watchtower). Conversely as a hard drinker we can poison his ale/mead/liquor and have the dwarves up in arms (particularly if we dopplegang his protagonist - link with #1???

”Once we start to stir trouble, we can put the blame on them, or better, turn then against the watchtower.”

Her piece said, she looks around taking charge ”We have many days to prepare. You go out and learn every bit of information you can. I’ll stay here at the inn, the noble daughter of some minor family. I have not the patience to talk to peasants or way with words to have them tells me their secrets.”

I suggest we keep at least a week gathering all information we can, all the rumors before we start planning how to tackle the place.

Puzzled by the complicated choices Arthur rumbles: "Good suggestions, but can they be done. The ambush is straight forward, but the rest seems complicated."

At Ember's demandments old Opa Langenschlaf merely bows with a wry smile and a somewhat facetious comment:

"Natürlich Mistress Thorn ve vill discern zhat vich ve can... Vun quevstion, if I may, on euer disguise.. A minor noblevoman, vithout patience to zhose below her... You do sprechen of a role Ja?"

”What? Speak plainly!” She says in an annoyed voice
”If you have time to make riddles, you should go about doing what’s asked of you.”

Kaynen smiles as Ember shares her thoughts.

"Ah, I see we are thinking alike, you and I..."

Waving his hand, the half-elf adds.

"I will approach Tacitus and make an inquiry on his research... my studies and... *ahem* charm should provide me with further insight here."

The lanky manservant skin being worn by the unholy wretch bows low in exaggerated humility...

"Merely misplaced humour Ja? I am ever your servant Mistress Thorn. As a former knight's esquire auld Opa vill sprekt to der good Kaptain und his men..."

... before shooting Kaynen a cold stare as he exits;

"Master..."

If you are going to spend a week on fact finding, I'll just give you all the rumours that you can pick up. It leaves you with 23 days until the bugbear hoard starts to fall apart. Obviously you can do other things at the same time an ask follow up questions regarding any of the rumours. You can also do gather information checks on any of the people mentioned.

Rumors:

1. Have you ever been to the choir hall of Balentyne? Amazing! The priests are such beautiful singers and sometimes the stone saints that adorn the place join in the chorus. Such a miracle!

2. Mad Martin is a strange one! He tends the rook- ery in the Watchtower. They say he never leaves except for necessities. He talks to the birds like people and has named every one!

3.Lord Havelyn is a good soul but so grim and gloomy. For so great a lord to be unhappy, he must be guilty about something!

4. That Captain Zack Eddarly is a handsome one, isn’t he? Such a gallant! And still unmarried at his age. He’ll make some lady of proper breeding quite a catch won’t he?

5. Ye Merrie Men are coming to town and the hand- some William Marcus Marlow is coming with them! Can you believe it? The Bard of Bar- rington! Here! They are doing the “Fall of Am- berlyn”! Oh, I can’t wait!

6. They say the bugbears are massing up north. I wonder what their up to? Well, it doesn’t matter! We’ll be ready for ‘em! You’d think those shaggy walking carpets would have learned by now that the Watch Wall is unbreakable!

7.Bellam Barhold (the innkeeper) is such a lush. He does enjoy his wine. He’s always complaining about how he can’t get any of the good stuff here in the borderlands.

8. Have you seen Kaitlyn Mott? She’s the most beautiful woman in town! How did an ugly lump of a man like Captain Franz Mott bag a looker like her? And how does he keep her, that’s what I want to know!

9. Have you had any of Mama Guisseppe’s beef stew? Delicious! I hear she goes up to the Watch- tower and cooks a big batch of it for the men ev- ery Monday! What a nice old lady.

10. Did you hear about prisoners escaping from Branderscar? Were they ever caught?

11. I hear a raven arrived at the rookery last night! I bet it carried important news though I know not about what.

12. Do you know how the Lord’s Dalliance got its name? It was once a brothel! I hear there used to be a secret passage to the basement that allowed the Lord of the Watchtower to sneak in here and have a good time. Of course it must have been sealed up years ago.

Dm Dice:

Ember: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 13 = 28
Arthur: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Lucetta: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Kaynen: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
Albrekt: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

Ember:

On the fifth day in the inn you are awakened in the night by the sound of someone creeping around below you. Going to investigate, you see Master Barhold looking about furtively and heading into the cellar.

Oh, what do we have here? she thinks to before following the man, silent as shadow.

Stealth: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
For now, just following the man and see what he is up to.

Perc: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22

Silently following behind the man, you keep to the shadows. Barhold caries a small lantern and it casts long shadows all about him. In the cellar, he moves over to one of the walls and fiddles with one of the stones. As you watch, a section of the wall swings silently inwards revealing a dark, stone-lined tunnel. Barhold takes up this lantern and steps into the dark passage.

Ember doesn’t follow the man, no sense risking Discovery for now. But she would make use of that knowledge.
Once the week is past, she gathers her minions, I mean, allies to discuss what was heard and found.

Rumors: And Ember takes on them:

1. Have you ever been to the choir hall of Balentyne? Amazing! The priests are such beautiful singers and sometimes the stone saints that adorn the place join in the chorus. Such a miracle!
”Useless! What do we care if they can sing? This is no more than superstition and folklore.” she says dismissing as bad information.

2. Mad Martin is a strange one! He tends the rookery in the Watchtower. They say he never leaves except for necessities. He talks to the birds like people and has named every one!
”A rookery? Interesting. We have to make sure it’s destroyed! We can’t afford letting them have this means of communication!”

3.Lord Havelyn is a good soul but so grim and gloomy. For so great a lord to be unhappy, he must be guilty about something!
”He is guilty! Guilty of serving Mitra and praying to Mitra! And for that he’ll pay with his life!” she says. She don’t see how a man with such influence could be considered guilty of anything else other than his faith in the wrong god.

4. That Captain Zack Eddarly is a handsome one, isn’t he? Such a gallant! And still unmarried at his age. He’ll make some lady of proper breeding quite a catch won’t he?
”Maybe we can use it! If one were to charm the man, he could lead us straight inside the place or at least tell us more about it.”

5. Ye Merrie Men are coming to town and the hand- some William Marcus Marlow is coming with them! Can you believe it? The Bard of Barrington! Here! They are doing the “Fall of Am- berlyn”! Oh, I can’t wait!
”What we know of this event? Who will be attending? ”

6. They say the bugbears are massing up north. I wonder what their up to? Well, it doesn’t matter! We’ll be ready for ‘em! You’d think those shaggy walking carpets would have learned by now that the Watch Wall is unbreakable!
”They’ll be ready to die at Sakkarot’s axe!’”

7.Bellam Barhold (the innkeeper) is such a lush. He does enjoy his wine. He’s always complaining about how he can’t get any of the good stuff here in the borderlands.
”The man has secrets we may be able to use! I’ll tell you more about what I discovered later!”

8. Have you seen Kaitlyn Mott? She’s the most beautiful woman in town! How did an ugly lump of a man like Captain Franz Mott bag a looker like her? And how does he keep her, that’s what I want to know!
”How indeed. In my experience, there’s no such thing as love, only interest. Maybe there’s more to it, we should investigate more!”

9. Have you had any of Mama Guisseppe’s beef stew? Delicious! I hear she goes up to the Watch- tower and cooks a big batch of it for the men every Monday! What a nice old lady.
”Every Monday, all soldiers? Fantastic! Could we poison it? Any of use knows anything about poison?”

10. Did you hear about prisoners escaping from Branderscar? Were they ever caught?
”And they never will.”

11.I hear a raven arrived at the rookery last night! I bet it carried important news though I know not about what.
”Just gossip and idle talking! How a peasant would know what is happening inside the watchtower?”

12.Do you know how the Lord’s Dalliance got its name? It was once a brothel! I hear there used to be a secret passage to the basement that allowed the Lord of the Watchtower to sneak in here and have a good time. Of course it must have been sealed up years ago.
”Now this, might be just true. Last night I caught the innkeeper out of his bed and onto something suspicious. I followed him and there’s some sort of secret door in the cellar. We may as well check it today!”

As time goes by Arthur contemplates the best cause of action. One day he asks: "Is it soon time for more direct action?" Elaborating further he says: "I know we can't make a direct attack, but perhaps we find some poisonous herbs, follow the captains or that like?"

I know there are pleanty options, but I feel Arthur perhaps is overwhelmed and need some direction. Perhaps guidance on the most sound course of action.

A week on as the group communicate their findings and thoughts Albrέkt listens to Ember's word's and Arthur's concerns;

Spoilered the one's on the rumours or it would be an epic post

6. They say the bugbears are massing up north. I wonder what their up to? Well, it doesn’t matter! We’ll be ready for ‘em! You’d think those shaggy walking carpets would have learned by now that the Watch Wall is unbreakable!
Ember: ”They’ll be ready to die at Sakkarot’s axe!"
Albrέkt:If der wall is unzerbrechlich... unbreakable, why do der zwerg work on it?

7.Bellam Barhold (the innkeeper) is such a lush. He does enjoy his wine. He’s always complaining about how he can’t get any of the good stuff here in the borderlands.

Ember: ”Every Monday, all soldiers? Fantastic! Could we poison it? Any of use knows anything about poison?”

Ember: ”And they never will.”
Albrέkt:Indeed..

11.I hear a raven arrived at the rookery last night! I bet it carried important news though I know not about what.

Albrέkt:"Ze may be un servant Mistress? Some underlings are prone to loose lips Ja!? Ve should at least investigate?"

12.Do you know how the Lord’s Dalliance got its name? It was once a brothel! I hear there used to be a secret passage to the basement that allowed the Lord of the Watchtower to sneak in here and have a good time. Of course it must have been sealed up years ago.
Ember: ”Now this, might be just true. Last night I caught the innkeeper out of his bed and onto something suspicious. I followed him and there’s some sort of secret door in the cellar. We may as well check it today!”

"Are you thinking about any specific crimes?" Arthur says with a smile on his lips. He continues "I don't see how we can do anything inside the watchtower, but perhaps we can find out something here in town. Do we know if the captains or the wives venture out from the watchtower?"
