So Charles... any chance of letting in a third roll so i can hopefully get something above 10pt buy? (anything above at this point haha!)

And if so.... Could you please do some more of that wriggling please Lexi? It seemed to work for Moonlooper.

Crunch is done, I believe I'm gonna try those questions I've stolen from Lexi.

I think he'd be a really interesting character to play, in combat relying on combat expertise and feinting to get his sneak attacks in, and perhaps throwing a demoralize in there occasionally while maintaining a bit more of a defensive stance.

Out of combat he's an able sailor/ navigator, knowledgeable about nature, has some face and interrogation skills.

He'll essentially be the prototypical pirate captain. As he levels I'll probably be looking at some of the pirate prestige classes and he might end up multitasking in the fighter(corsair) archetype(no more than 6 levels of it though.)

About Percival:
Step 1: Write 5 background and concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the character. These can be a concept overview, a list of important life events, a physical description, a personality profile...whatever you need to get an image in your mind.

1:Percival Stone is what some would call a “dashing rogue”, while others would call him a womanizer, and yet others would just call him “thief”. He gets by on his charm and quick reflexes, and isn't afraid to use them to get what he wants (often in the form of treasure).

2:As Percival would say, “I'm an avid admirer of women.” He thoroughly enjoys the company of beautiful women, and it often leads him into trouble with jealous lovers and protective fathers. This penchant for the opposite sex often leads to him being called a womanizer or a deviant, but he knows it's all in good fun, and if he happens to meet a wench worth marrying along the way, then that's alright too.

3:Percival also has a love of gambling, but it has bitten him more than once. Although he is quite skilled at the various games (and making sure the “correct” player wins), he is by no means the best. The worst loss he ever suffered was losing his ship and crew in a game of dice when someone managed to switch his loaded dice for their own.

4: Percival was once the captain of the pirate ship Lovely Elise, named after the most beautiful of Percival's conquests. They raided the Inner Sea for many years, and although they didn't have the great success that some pirates do, they made a living by staying under the notice of the various organizations who seek to end piracy. Six years ago he lost the Lovely Elise and her crew in a game of dice.

5: Despite his years at sea, Percival is most at home when in a port city. Although this is mainly because it is easier to find women, gambling, and marks for “item acquisition”, he also enjoys the feeling of steady ground under his feet, something still novel to him after life on the sea.

Percival's Goals:
Step 2: List at least two goals for the character. At least one of these goals should be one that the character has, while another should be one that you, as a player, want to see developed over the course of the game.

1: Percival wants his ship back. He has tried many times throughout the six years they have been apart, but with no success. He is now desperate enough to seek a group of fellow adventurers to take back his ship, although he worries about casualties for his former crew.

2: I'm picturing at later levels Percival becoming a traditional “Sword and Pistol” swashbuckler, and also am hoping to find a way to get him to the status of Pirate Captain once more.

Percival's Secrets:
Step 3: List at least two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet. This will help me in creating plots that center around your character.

1: Percival exiled himself from his homeland of Andoran because of his roguish ways. He was spending the evening with a high ranking official's wife, Elise Chastain, and the husband was due to be away for at least one more night. However, he came home early as a surprise to his wife, and caught the two together. Although the man called for the guards, Percival managed to escape, although just barely. The last he had heard, the man had had his wife hung, and offered a reward for anyone who could bring him in, dead or alive.

2: The Lovely Elise sank two days ago when it was far out to sea. Although no survivor's have shown up yet, one lone woman is on her way to the nearest port city to bring the news of the ships destruction.

Percival's People:
Step 4: Describe at least three people that are tied to the character. Two of them are friendly to the character, one is hostile. If you like, you can include an enemy of yours here as well, so I have an instant NPC nemesis to throw at you.

1: Barleymin Butterburr, a tavern owner in Port Peril. Barleymin is a tall and muscular man, who can drink even the most seasoned pirate under the table. He has a passion for alcohol and despite his gruff exterior, runs one of the best taverns in town, “The Green Gill”. His most prized achievement is his own alcohol formula simply named “Barleymin Butterburr Special”. It is a very strong drink when compared to ale or beer (Think of a very strong whiskey), and he offers it on almost everything. There's the Barleymin Butterburr Breakfast Special, the Barleymin Butterburr Lunch Special, and even a Barleymin Butterburr Special Special, where he pours you two tankards instead of one. If it's on his menu, you can add “ Barleymin Butterburr...Special” to it. Percival tried many times to convince him to join his crew, twice as often after trying the Barleymin Butterburr Special, but Barleymin wouldn't budge from his tavern. They keep a friendly relationship, Barleymin doesn't say who he sees Percival bring upstairs, and Percival brings many sailors in to do business with Barleymin.

2: Olivia Baker, former first mate. Olivia was one of Percival's first flings in the Shackles, and is the closest to an actual relationship he has ever had. She ended up smitten with him, and sneaked aboard his ship. At first he was very opposed to it, but as the days went on she learned more and more and eventually became the second best pirate on the ship, after Percival himself of course. He made her his first mate. They spent their nights together while on the ship, but at port Percival often slipped away to pursue another fair lass. Eventually they were forced to split when Percival lost his ship and crew in a game of dice.

3: Jasper Chastain, a high ranking official in his former homeland of Andoran. He caught Percival and his wife in bed one night and called for his guards to give chase. Although Percival eluded them, Chastain put out a bounty on Percival, dead or alive. With the anger still inside of Chastain, it would probably be best for Percival if he was taken dead.

Percival's Quirks/Mannerisms:
Step 5: Describe three memories, mannerisms, or quirks that your character has. They don't have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.

1: Despite leaving his homeland of Andoran behind, he is still somewhat of a patriot. He will not pirate from a ship flying the Andoran flag unless in desperate need, and even then prefers to try and work it out peacefully through words or gold.

2: Percival is always nice to woman when first meeting. If the woman proves to be hostile, he won't hesitate to defend himself. He will also treat them in the same way they treat him if he has known them for a little while.

3: Percival does everything he can to look immaculate. Clean shave every day, washing before going to sleep, and after he wakes up. He isn't afraid to get dirty, since dirt, black powder, blood, and sea water are all part of his job description, but he does his best to start and end the day fresh and new.

Percival's Items:
1: A handkerchief given to him by Elise Chastain, which he keeps as a reminder of the most beautiful woman he has met so far in his lifetime.

2:His lucky coin. It is a simple gold coin from his first plunder as a pirate. Whether it holds any real luck or not is debatable, but he holds onto it for fear that if he is right, losing it could bring him much misfortune.

My creative juices weren't flowing very well today so the backstory is a bit blandish in spots. Sorry. :(

Fuller Backstory of Grunt:

A long time in a sea far, far away….

It was a period of civil unrest. Orc seaships, striking from a hidden cove, have won their first victory against the Free Captains of the Shackles. During the battle, Orc spies managed to steal secret plans to the Free Captain’s ultimate weapon, the DRAGON’S DEATH, and armored seaship with enough power to destroy and entire city. Pursued by the Free Captain’s sinister agents, Captain Durra races home aboard her seaship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore glory to the Orcs.

Unfortunately Captain Durra’s seaship could not outrun the Free Captain’s Sea Destroyer. Captain Durra was captured and taken hostage while the rest of the ship was slaughtered, save for one small orc child.

There was A NEW HOPE but not really >_>

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----

As the orc child grew older the captain of the Dragon’s Death took a liking to the boy. However, all the boy did was grunt, which made communication hard for most of the crew. But the captain would not hear anything about it. The orc boy made for a decent worker since he could lift nearly twice as much as anybody else on board, but he was always a little distracted and couldn’t figure out too many things on his own. Even though the boy could only grunt and point he also made for a fantastic fighter. His brute strength usually over coming any obstacle he faced.

As the years kept moving along Grunt, as he was now dubbed, learned how to work more efficiently on a pirate ship, setting the rigging and moving the siege weapons into place. He was also taught how to use his strength to his advantage even more when fighting with other ships. His Earthbreaker could clear entire decks with just a few swings, Grunt was truly someone to be feared in hand to hand combat.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Grunt was always kept on deck whenever the Dragon’s Death docked because the captain knew he would get lost if he let him roam around the city. There was always at least one guard on the boat to keep Grunt from wandering off and getting lost.

One chance day however, the Dragon’s Death was docked at Port Peril to sell off some of its captured wares and Grunt was up on deck watching people pass by below him longing to be with them. Then a very intriguing woman caught his eye, Grunt could not stop staring at her, he had to go and get her. She was his to inspect. He ran to gangway only to be intercepted by one of his crew mates. ”Ah ah ah Grunt, you know you can’t leave the ship.”

”Gruh arr nugh ruh” points to woman walking away down the pier ”MEHGR!” Points to self

The crew mate looks at what grunt is pointing to, ”Wow, she is certainly… interesting ain’t she Grunt. Though I would have pegged you for a more “normal” looking woman. But hey, if that is what you like, a woman is a wo-“ Grunt grabbed him by the back of the shirt and flung him off the side of the ship and charged down the gangway after the women.

By the time Grunt made it to where he last saw her, she wasn’t there anymore. He looked all around for her, but she was shorter than the rest of the crowd and he couldn’t spot her anywhere. So he went looking, he even tried “asking” a few people but those poor people he asked usually ended up a few feet from where they started, and prone on the ground. As the day got later and later Grunt began to despair, nobody was helping him like they should and he couldn’t find any sign of her. That is until he was walking down the street of the home to the Formidably Maid, Grunt looked up just in time to see her enter the tavern, and again he charged down the street and burst into the common area eyes scanning every last corner like a hunter searching for his prey.

Lol grunt :) <33333

ok going to flesh out a little more. I also have a full background if that helps.. trying to not make it too long.

Out of Combat:
She is good at the deceitful ways. She is great at lying and disguising herself. She is also a good diplomat to try to avoid combat and unnecessary death. She is knowledgeable in history of the area and likes to look for treasure and artifacts. She loves to tinker with magical items and disarming traps though she isn't good at finding them.

Combat:
She isn't a very good fighter and tends to only attack if she or a friend is threatened. When that does occur she tries to get in the best position for attack to strike in vital areas to stop them from attacking and tries to persuade them to stop fighting because she doesn't want to kill them. If a magic item is available for her she tries to figure it out and use the spells it has.

Appearance:
You see an attractive female standing about 5' 5" and weighing 140 lbs. She appears to be a young human but with a closer look you can tell she has gills. She is 29 years of age but looks like she barely is 20. She has dark brown wavy hair and bright purple eyes with fair skin for someone who is at sea all the time. She wears a light brown vest and a light green leather pants that stop at the ankles. She also wears a red bandanna on her head and has a seashell necklace around her neck. She carries a rapier on her back along with her backpack that has two daggers strapped on each side.

Personality:
She is very charming to be around and can cut up with anyone she encounters. She has lived with pirates, fishermen, and adventurers who have traveled by sea most of her life. She does not like to talk about where she is from and her family, but likes to find anything about her culture and her race. She likes to stir up trouble among pirates who capture her and force her to stay with them as a "sea charm". By doing this she has become great at lying and goading others into mutinous thoughts. She will not take the life of others if she has the option. She believes everyone can change and tries to save lives if she can, but if no option is available she protects herself and friends if a fight occurs.

Full Background:
Djulla was born Desnus 1st 4682. Her mother died during childbirth and her father hated her and blamed her for the loss of his beloved wife. She was born in the city of Promise on the island of Hermea in the Streaming Sea. She live there the first 7 years of her life and barely remembers about the wonders of it. Her father decided to leave Promise with her and go back to find out more about their race and went out with a ship and crew to study artifacts and sites with the history of gillmen, ancient azlanti, and aboleth. Trying to earn love from her father she took the interest as well and helped him find artifacts.

When she was 11, she got into an argument with her father and swam off to go treasure seeking. She had found a site and started to scavenge around it and got cut bad. Blood gushed out and a nearby shark big enough to kill her in one bite started to rush after her. Terrified she swam as fast as she could to get away and got caught in a net set out for fish before the shark got to her. She was now aboard "The Strapping Eel" a fishing ship. The ship had been doing poorly catching fish thus far until the catch they got with Djulla. Captain Carl Mormuck decided to keep the young gillman and called her his lucky "sea charm". They continued to do well fishing with her on board. They were kind to her and let her do as she pleased as long as she didn't try to run off.

She decided to stay with them and abandon the father who hated her. She stayed with this crew for 13 years. She knew the basics of sailing but never had to do any manual labor or get into fights. There was a terrible storm that took the ship and its crew. She managed to save Mormuck and took him to an small nearby island. They were able to survive well on the island and Mormuck apologized for keeping her as his item for so many years. They were stranded there for 3 years until one day she spotted a ship that stopped in sight. She swam near and asked for help.

This ship was "The Temptress' Pleasure". It was a pirate ship led by Captain Catherine "The Succubus" Everfiend. Everfiend agreed to helping Djulla and they went and picked up Mormuck. Once they had both of them in their possession they told Djulla to find this underwater treasure they sough and threatened to kill Mormuck if she ran away. They told her if she did this they would let him live and leave him at the next port. She agreed and went deep down into some ancient ruins that led to an underground cave.

She went up into the cave and encountered deadly traps she was barely able to disable. She went further in and saw tons of treasure of ancient azlanti descent. Among the treasure she saw strange writing on the walls and she found a small statue of a strange creature that looked like a disfigured and twisted mermaid. She kept this hidden for herself as she was drawn and intrigued by it. She returned with some of the treasure and led the others to the area to get the rest. They let Mormuck go as they promised, but "The Succubus" decided to keep Djulla as her "sea charm".

She was aboard "The Temptress' Pleasure" for 3 years. During this time she learned how to fight and was forced to kill. She was kept a close watch on and was forced to sleep in the captain's chambers. Captain Catherine Everfiend was very possessive of her and used her however she saw fit. They continued to find treasure after treasure and Everfiend kept more and more to herself. Finally, Djulla was able to gradually stir up mutiny among the crew after a huge find of treasure. During the fight amongst the crew the only friend she made in the crew let her slip away during the confusion. His name was Nevik "Weird Eye" Cazu and told her that she owed him one day.

Finally, she was out on her own she decided to go out and look for ancient lore. She went to a tavern called the Formidably Maid in Port Peril last night to meet a contact who supposedly had an old map of lost cyclops ruins to sell, but the drink was stronger than she had expected and she passed out before making the deal.

btw got to love Grunt lol

Feh. powergamers, the lot of you :P

lol I dumped both str and dex.

I'm unsure how I feel about inquisitors being designated as "skills."

Dagus Stoneheart wrote:

+1

Yeah, inquisitors are kind of...all-round characters. They do get 6 ranks/level, but they also get a lot of melee support and decent divine casting.

WRIGGLE I WANNA GOOOOOOO! Wanna play with GRUNT! :D

Please see the highlighted portions as I agree with your assessment of Inquisitors. Maybe it should be 'Skills/Jack of All trades'. Feel free to adjust as you like.

Of course. And Grunt speaks his own language, it isn't his fault others don't understand it. XD

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Lvl 2, requirement that all characters take a lvl of Linguistics and choose Grunting as their new language.

Absolutely. That was the plan alllll along!f

If I was going to learn a language, it would probably be Pirate English. I can barely understand my Facebook settings! :D

Lentuki will love taking the chance to learn Grunt. He'll probably start pestering Grunt with questions when he first hears of it.

Just so you all know, you've now got less than 24 characters to make changes/sign up and such.

Then applications close and I go through the gruelling tasking of working out which pirates are ship-shape, and which are marooned in the pub to swill rum and accost wenches.

I got sick and am not gonna be able to come up with a good concept by tomorow. Best of luck to everyone.

Nuuuu! Get better!

I think I got mine ready. I'm rolling with low stats (11pt buy). Only thing I could do now is work on the non player characters I know if I needed to make them, but waited incase I didn't get picked. Either way I had fun making the character and will try to use it in the future for something pirated related.

Everything is updated and on this alias.

Ok... I didn't manage to flesh out my character as well as I would have.
Since there's so many fantastic applications I'll withdraw mine and ease a tiny bit the burden of the choice ^^.

Everything looking good for Lentuki. I can't wait to find out if I get to play this.

I'd wriggle in anticipation myself... but Lexi seems to have the market on wrigglin.

All wriggles are allowed! :D

wriggling away then!

And . . . wriggling

Blink... Blink

I feel a little self conscious now... but oh what the heck.

*wriggle*

Erm..
wriggle.

Yaaay, I have started a trend :D

I believe this is relevant

Just over 8 hours til submissions close, I'll try and have final decisions up sometime about an hour after that. At this point, I'm looking to take a group of 5.

If I struggle to narrow it down, I may do a trial RP of your characters reaching the Formidable Maid but I will try and avoid this as I'm quite keen to get the adventure started. And I honestly doubt that witnessing all your characters come to life will make my job any easier anyway.

Thanks so much to everyone that has shown interest though, I hope you all get the chance to use these characters in future, because they're pretty darn boss.

Are you trying to tell me my wriggle party isn't relevant?!

Of course it's relevant. I think it was Grunt's blinking that wasn't?

He must not have any Restless that needed to be Wriggled out. ;)

Time is most definitely up ladies and gents. Announcements coming soon.

Here is my index finger.

Here is my middle finger.

They are crossed.

Just out of curiosity, what is a suitable GM bribe that can be sent via the internet?

As was promised, I struggled a lot to put together a party: it's taken me 3 hours re-reading through Crunch And Fluff. Whilst two characters really stuck out to me, the next 12 favourite characters were all pretty much on an equal footing. In the end, I narrowed it down to a party of 5, as follows:

- Grunt
- Lorin Val
- Tipsy Jayl
- Nico
- Bratix

You can all head to the discussion to get acquainted. I'm looking to have the first post up tomorrow morning.

HOWEVER!!!!!
Given how many great characters there were, I'm going to offer a proposal. Once I'm settled into GMing, and if I feel that I have sufficient time available to me, I'm planning to run a second game of S+S. I have another party already written down and if/when I start it I'll contact the appropriate players.

Once again, thanks to everyone for applying, I had tonnes of fun reading through.

Congratulations to those chosen. Have fun playing!

cgs all that got picked, maybe i'll run across another S&S and have better luck on my rolls.

Darn. Should have worked out how to send Pizza...

Congrats to those who are playing.

Wait, I made it?

Congrats you chosen few! Thanks for tossing the bone Charles, and have fun GMing!

Ready to go

Sorry about disappearing halfway through my application Charles, got caught up in the randomness of life haha!

Congrats to those of you who made it in, make sure to drink some extra ale for me!

That's fine mate, life happens. I was pretty confused trying to work out what Percival actually was though!
