The DC to climb the rope with a wall to brace against is a 5, meaning most people can't fall, they can only fail to make progress. Jask, has a -1 climb, so if he rolls a 1, he scores a 0, which is 5 or more so he falls instead of just making no progress.

Curse of the Crimson Throne Roll20

Lesedi and Nimar can make survival checks to get along in the wild. The DC is 10 and can only be attempted once every 24 hours. Each 2 points above 10 allows you to provide additional food and water for one additional person.

Sasha's Survival: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24

Sasha brings back enough food to feed 8 total people.

Eurypterid's Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21

The Eurypterid clearly notices your arrival on the deck of the ship and seems to believe you'll be just as tasty as what it what trying to eat before.

Aerys Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Ishirou Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Jask Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Nail Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Nymra Initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 19

It charges at you, trying to catch you in one of it's claws but only manages to snap off a piece of the ship's railing.
Eurypterid Claw Attack: 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 1 + 2 = 9

Everyone else may act now. Jask and Nymra are at the bottom of the 30 foot climb in the boat. The others have just cleared the railing of the deck.

So I think what's happened is that you didn't realize that you made two nearly identical posts. The first post at 10:00pm (PST) had Jask making 8 climb checks, 6 of which he passed. The second post - which occurred 14 minutes later (10:14 PM PST), had Jask making an additional 7 checks, 4 of which he passed with the final being a fallinn failure.

So in total Jask made 15 climb checks with 10 successes, and only the very last roll was a falling failure.

Doesn't really matter though, and the fall makes it more dramatic. :)

As this is a big ol' critter, Neil pulls out his machete (move action) and chops at the claw that nearly clipped him (standard action attack).

If he has to, he will make a 5 foot step to get out of the way and allow someone else to step in as well.

Interesting. I posted it one way first, with his falling, and decided I didn't actually want him to fall. I didn't want to risk the cleric dying in the first few minutes, I mean since he was still lucky enough to have his hands. So I switched some posts around and started to proceed with him staying in the boat, but remembered this was his idea to come get his stuff. When I updated the post though it looks like it got saved wrong and I didn't catch that at the time. Shows me that he's just determined to get on that boat.

You can climb at half your speed (instead of 1/4) so you can climb 15 feet as a single move action vs. a DC 10, doing so twice in one round as a double move puts you at the top just as Neil 5 foot steps out of the way.

Had it not charged you, it would not have. Swinging the machete down at the claw not only decapitates the claw, but an eye stalk and some of the frills sticking out of the face of the creature, sending it crashing hard to the deck below. It twitches slightly just as Nymra makes her way over the railing.

Curse of the Crimson Throne Roll20

It doesn't take long for those familiar with the vessel to determine that the brig and galley are both empty. The captain's cabin contains a large over turned desk with several drawers. One of the drawers contains several sets of keys, another contains several sea charts and maps, along with the Captain's log. One of the drawers is locked and none of the keys appear to open it.

Break DC 23 or Disable Device 25:

The drawer contains a bottle of fine brandy worth 50 gp, a darkwood model of the Jenivere in a glass bottle (100gp), and a small coffer containing 350 gp. There is also a satchel that holds 12 potions.

Also, against the wall is a large footlocker containing Jask's possessions (masterwork dagger, leather armor, 2 potions of cure light wounds, holy symbol of Nethys, and a spell component pouch).

While most of what's left in the larder is unusable, you can scrounge enough food to last one person 24 days. There is also a body stashed in one of the cupboards.

The supply room that the eurypterid was trying to get into has a stuck door.

Break DC 21 or Hardness 5, 3 hp:

The body of Alton lies here, still wearing his masterwork studded leather armor and masterwork short sword. Multiple wounds pierce the body. The rest of the room also contains a block and tackle, three large canvas sheets, two fishing nets, a grappling hook, two bullseye lanterns, 12 flasks of oil, 150 feet of hemp rope, and five shovels.

Some of these may be useful later on. We can use these charts and the Captain's log may help us figure out what happened. Neil grabs the charts, maps, and the log and puts them in his... Damn. I wish I still had that waterproof bag... backpack. We can look over these when we get back to shore.

You would easily recognize the body stuffed in the cupboard is that of the cook. It's a DC 16 Heal check to identify the cause of death, if you wish to take the time to investigate.

There are several wounds on the body of the first mate Alton, also requiring a DC 16 Heal to identify the cause of death if you wish to take the time to investigate.

Every minute you are on the ship though, it feels just a little bit more unsturdy. The wet floors, the cracked wood, the warped and cracked hull, the torn masts, the waves crashing against the wreck, it doesn't exactly feel like you have time for a picnic. So far nothing has given away and it the ship has not shifted since you climbed aboard, but any experienced sailor can tell it's only a matter of time.

Boat
It takes dozens of minutes of hard labor and careful stepping, a lot of slipping and cursing, a few very scary moments, but you manage to get everything, including the dead bodies, even the body of the eurypterid loaded into the boat. Time is growing short as even now the force in which the life boat smashing up against the wreck seems to be getting more and more damaging, both to the life boat and to the wreck. Nymra gives off a hard shove and you're off drifting away and rowing back to the island.

Jask looks at Neil regarding the bodies and simply says "Not here, no time. We take them with us, figure it out later."

Island
Between Nimar, Sasha, and Lesedi searching for food, the group manages to stock pile about 30 days of food for one person, or enough to feed the group for about 3 days. Lots of fruits and a few vegetables, some mushrooms and even a few bugs are piled into one of the life boats keeping everything dry and out of the sun.

Rearranging the remaining life boats has formed enough of a shelter to keep the winds off of your backs and provided enough shadow to keep the sweltering heat from becoming dangerous. However the shelter isn't very big, and currently won't accommodate everyone, but by taking shifts you can lesser the impact of the climate and the environment. Not a bad days start for half a day's of work.

So what's next...

Sounds good, Jask. Neil responds.

Back on the beach.... Half a day is gone, right? So we still have the other half

Neil starts collecting firewood to build a fire. Hey Lesedi, think you can do that water trick again? With you around, we won't have to worry about fresh water. The most important aspect of wilderness survival is taken care of. This place amazes me every day. Anyone know how to cook? If like to get one of these lobsters boiling and have some meat for dinner.

Among other things that Neil does, he sets up some of the canvas between two life boats using some ropes and 550 cord to set up better shelter so everyone can get some shade.

At some point he looks towards the skies. Can anyone read the weather? Not sure if Nimar got the chance to tell us earlier. I'm also not sure what's good to happen next. Explore the island?

Hey Jask, now that we're on shore, want to take a look at the cook and the first mate? And we should really do a funeral ceremony before the day's end. What's the custom here? Where I'm from, we bury bodies six feet in the ground. But not on the beach. I think I've been meta gaming here and automatically assuming that because Jask is a priest. Although he did say "cleric" and Neil probably assumes it's just an odd way of saying priest. I feel like he would automatically trust priests, especially since he has no idea who Nethys is.

Before the day ends, Neil reads through the Captain's Log. Especially the later entries.

So I'm hoping that one of the things we do will give us some clues as to what the heck we do next. Otherwise it's going to be random exploration of the island. Fortunately, this survival situation has become a bit less survival and a bit more adventurous. So we have a bit more leeway than otherwise expected for something like this. I think our best bet will be to find some sort of civilization and a ship. Preferably not the cannibals.

Lesedi helps out with the water but warns Neil of the toxins the lobster creatures produce. As for the rest of the day, Lesedi will keep out of the sun and mediate unless she is needed.

I was a bio major back at UCSD. My assessment is that any toxins will only be restricted to specific segments of the animal. I bet we can cut it out and eat the rest.

Yes, half of the day has been used, you still have the remaining half to use, assuming you wish to be productive with it. You could always just enjoy the beach scene.

spoiler=Cook Body, DC 16 Heal Check
The cook was killed by serpentine bites on his neck from a very large snake.

Jask Heal: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12

First Mate, DC 16 Heal Check:

Alton Devers suffered multiple rapier wounds, but it would appear it was the poison of the eurypterid that finally did him in.

Jask would recommend burning the bodies to prevent the spread of disease and predators and scavengers from coming closer.

The captain's log is a bit of a mystery. The most recent entries focus mostly on the captain's obsession with one of the passenger's "Leana." At first it's just his fascination with her, but by the end it's clear he's gone mad and his only focus is her, even going so far as wishing the first mate would have an accident to avoid competition for her. At her wish, they changed course for Smuggler's Shiv which caused the crew to uproar, but apparently Leana was able to take care of the crew.

Going back months before that the Captain was a very sane and detailed oriented person. His notes were meticulous and daily, often describing every facet that he could seem to remember. As time goes on, days become missing and the mention this Leana occurs more and more frequently until it becomes obvious that she is all he is concerned about.

Neil shares what he read with the rest of the group. Anyone know who this Leena is?

Now that we're not in a hurry, I can take 10 on the heal check for a 16.

"What is a bye-oh major? Sounds like some sort of rank," Nimar asks without judgment, only curiosity. "As for Leana, I'm drawing a blank, but based on what we know right now, I'm thinking we want to avoid whoever, or whatever she is if at all possible."

Curse of the Crimson Throne Roll20

Between all of you, you can piece together than Leana was a very secretive Varisian scholar. Other than the captain, no one really seems to really remember her interacting with anyone else.

Once the knowledge from a spoiler has been ascertained by one, it can be shared with the rest, but that is up to the one that made the check or learned the information.

At the very least, you should be able to feast on the lobster's claws, almost as big as a man's hand without any risk of poison. Also if anyone has craft (alchemy), you may be able to harvest some of the poison...if you had an appropriate crafting set.

Is there anything else that you would like to do before you lose the sun light. You still have a few hours. Also, determining watch rotations would be a good idea at some point.

"I can take last watch. I must prepare for the day, and may as well do that while on watch." Lesedi slowly and meticulously pronounces every word.

Lesedi walks to the bodies that were brought back and kneels down to inspect them. After a few moments, she stands back up. "The poison from a large snake... Is it possible that the cook was the one that poisoned us, and the snake who's venom was used was his ultimate undoing? Might he have been ordered by the captain to do so? This is all so... unusual."

Nymra will spend the rest of the day gathering firewood and tinder, enough for a small pyre to burn the bodies, and enough to keep a fire overnight. Then, she sets up her hanging tent on a nearby tree, tells the group that she'll take the middle watch, has a trail ration, and heads to bed.

While eating claw meat, Neil discusses their watch for the night.

How many watches do we want to set up? We have, what, 9 people here? We could easily do one person an hour. Nimar is first. Then Jask, Ishirou, Sasha, Nymra, Gelik, Aerys, Myself, and Lesedi last.

Each night we can rotate who gets one hour by moving forward, so we each get a solid night's rest every now and then. And if we don't like the random assignment I gave, then we can just do alphabetical.

I got nothing else for us. Anyone know what the heck were going to do?

Suppose in the morning we look for more clues by the beach closest to the ship, or we head inland and explore, either going as a large group, or sending small scouting parties. Have the ways the cook and the first mate been revealed to everyone yet? And if so, is there anyone who uses a rapier amongst the pcs and npcs?

Nimar is your resident rapier user. Eventually picking up Swashbuckler levels, not sure how far I'm taking either yet. He'd be up for exploration of the island interior in the morning, but isn't interested in pushing the full complement of survivors to go as large parties make lots of noise.

yes, all info has been revealed

Curse of the Crimson Throne Roll20

Gelik basically refuses to take a watch and offers 1 gp to anyone willing to cover his spot in the rotation. He is also able to identify the satchel of potions brought back as 4 cure light wounds potions, 2 cure moderate wounds potions, four lesser restoration potions, a potion of remove disease, a potion of water breathing, and a potion of water walking.

Sasha uses rapiers as well but already has two masterwork rapiers so will pass.

Jask uses a shortsword.

Gelik prefers his small sized longsword.

Aerys let's her fists do the talking.

Aerys will also ask "Did you manage to find any alcohol on board, some rum or whiskey or brandy or something, anything at all?"
