"I'm guessing that reattaching these hands to the statue will do something. Something terrible, of course, but something nevertheless. Any takers?"
If no one else volunteers, Finn will try to reattach the paws (activating his wand of Mirror Image again, first).

Nothing seems to happen at first. No flames or frost or howling demons descend upon you. However the doors now open with ease. They open upon along hall, lite by flaming brands held aloft by iron ape statues placed at even intervals on either side. Each stature has its head thrown back as if in silent howl. At the far end lays a pair of copper doors, gleaming in the light.
Keeper of Forbidden Lore |
When ready, Karkalla moves toward the doors, the others fallow. Each set of Apes howl as you pass and Karkalla check the copper doors. She sees no signs of traps. Ardato and Guard push them open as the others stand ready.
Past the doors you see a huge chamber, watched over by five hideous statues. To the east and west stand four towering Demon-Ape statues facing a roaring pit of fire in the center of the chamber. On the opposite end from the door stands an even larger stone statue. Having the stylized body of ape this two headed Baboon faced statue has two tentacles sprouting from each shoulder in place of arms. It lords over the room, faces frozen in rage.
The massive fire puts off heat you can feel from the door, its flames reaching 10 feet from the floor. Dangling near the ceiling, 30 feet above the flames are two naked figures, they seem to be covered in some kind or paint of blood and weakly struggle against the chains holding them. Finn with his shape eyes can tell at once those forms belong to Thomas and Avner.
The large 12' statue is the prince of Demons himself
And this xmas day I give you the gift of a possibly very nasty fight
Ardanto Valanto |
Semi interesting fact: He was the first creature in D&D to have 200 hit points.
Ardanto grimaces as he sees the state of Thomas, but is more concerned with locating the demo ape he wounded out side in the ruins. He scans the area as he cautiously steps forward.

He wildly looks around for any more ape-demons.

"And let me guess, as soon as we try to save the two, something very nasty happens to us. My money is on our ape-friend joining the party, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are guardians already here as well. I suggest we prepare now, before we try anything else." Daurros intones a few words, touches Ardanto's sword, and gives it the ability to mimic cold iron.
cast versatile weapon on Ardanto's sword; should last 8 minutes.
Keeper of Forbidden Lore |
Karklla, Ardant and Finn look around the room. Ardanto doesn't see much, but the two captives starts yelling for help as soon as they see you. Finn and Karkalla do spot a winch on the left wall between two statues. Its about 10 feet off the ground as as you watch it drops downward. With a frighted yell the two captives start to descend toward the flames. You see no one else in the room.
Ok, the captives are dropping 5' per round now. The fire is so hot you can feel it at the door. Anyone moving within 5' of the fire will take heat damage. Sooooo Actions?
Keeper of Forbidden Lore |
And let the games begin........
As Karkalla moves toward the wall Finn runs toward it, leaping to catch the winch...The demon Ape appears charging Ardanto with power. While even surprised he managed to fend off two attacks, The Ape did land a single solid blow 20hp before bounding away toward the fire.

Finn moves with an incredible burst of speed and attacks the demon with a flurry of stabs.
Use 2 hero points for an extra move action via Action Surge, then full attack with Reckless Assault/Power Attack. Use Perfect Strike on the first attack. I don't know if he can use a ki point for an extra attack in combination with Haste, though.

I guess that means he'll have to just re-do Ardanto's entire turn, then. Darn! ;-)
Keeper of Forbidden Lore |
Ok going for guard and moving this along.
Snem blasts at the Demon-ape, doing little damage as Duarros casts a spell upon the group, gaining them swift speed. Ardanto charges the Demon, but it easily avoids his blow. Guard then rushes forward to bring his massive hammer into play, which the agile Demon also avoids. Finn leaps from the wall, leaving the winch still engaged and stabs at the Demon so fast no one is sure how many times he attacked. The Demon however still avoids all attacks, Laughing as it does so. Finn does however move to close to the flame, and the heat scorches him 5 hp
The the Demon whirls around Ardano and Guard with grace something that size has no right to have and pounced Toxim, who fends off two attacks but the Demon gets a bite out of him 18hp before bounding off toward Karkalla. He avoids drawing an attack from everyone but Finn, whose attack he Doges

Toxtim lets loose a volley of arrows, three of the four dig into the ape and it screams in rage and sets its eyes upon the archer.
Not to beat a dead horse, but note that one of Finn's attacks hit an AC of 31. Can you confirm that a 31 was a miss for him, but not for Toxim?
Also, it looks like Daurros and Ardanto are missing the +1 bonus to attacks from Haste. Does that help Daurros's Touch of Gracelessness?
Daurros -- you should also be rolling 2d6 and taking the highest value when you use an action point.

sorry, the green color is light and the numbers sometimes run together for me. That would have been 1 hit for finn. And I didn't count it up but the +1 from haste would indeed make a diffidence.

While at first it looked as if the spell had missed, the de,mon seems far more slugish then it had been. Finn steps forward, still taking damage from the hellish heat 5hp But the now less agile Demon is an easier target, he plunges his spear into his foe three times, something the Demon was not happy with.
Note: I am not sure on finns attacks here. I am reading 3 attacks 34,32 and 22 and the haste correct? If so, you hit 3 times

All good points. Thanks for the rules expertise! I admit action points are something I never played with before this PbP, so I forgot totally about being able to roll twice and take the better. Looks like my own spell, which I forgot, made the difference, anyway.

Four attacks -- three at 1d20+13+1 and one at 1d20+8+1. The first attack has two rolls because of Perfect Strike. So the rolls are 34, 32, 22 and 32.
