Oh yes, saving workers! Buying gear, spending down time waiting for the ship to get fixed!

Roll20 Maps Loot

I absolutely did! So let's get back to it!

Roll20 Maps Loot

Ok, so this is where the sandbox takes over for a bit. Tidewater Rock is likely beyond your abilities just yet, so we'll do some pirating and such.

How do we want to handle ship-to-ship combat? The player's Guide has some rules, that roughly have the two ships battle as "creatures" with some input by the PCs, followed eventually by the other guys (hopefully) capitulating, OR you board them and make them give in?

Orrrrr...

As we encounter other ships, and you decide to pirate, or parlay, or let them go, or whatever, I can fiat the fight up to the clash of wood against wood, and you guys storming their decks.

How does the group feel?

And some of you have GOT TO get some swimming skill when you next level up, you can't possibly keep rolling great on those checks. Someone is at least wearing the ring of swimming right?

Female Elf Witch/7 | HP 38/38| AC 17 T 11 FF 16 | Saves F 6 R 5 W 8 | CMD 14 | Per +10 | Init +1 | Active Spells False Life 11/11, Flight Hex, Mage Armor (AC 19)

Chaenath took it, but someone else might need it...

I guess the question is do we want to grapple with the ship combat rules? If we don't then we can just always get right to the boarding would definitely make the game run faster which is always a challenge in PBP BUT OTOH there'd be no point to upgrading our Ship.

I'm leaning towards faster play and just boarding or being boarded all the time.

Female Half-Orc Slayer 7 AC 19 [T 15 FF 14] | CMB +9 | CMD 24 | HP 59/59 | Fort +7 | Ref +11 | Will +3 | Init +5 | Percep +10, Darkvision 90 ft

As a shooty-type shooter with minimal interest in ship-type stuff, Alessandra will always be up for a quick grapple and board rather than the manoeuvre and naval-type thing. Maybe we upgrade our ship on that basis, to be the fastest afloat: not armed very well, but extremely fast to get into grapple and melee - what do the others think?

tl;dr - I agree with Chaenath: faster play and boarding is the way to go.

The Exchange

Male N Dwarf Alchemist (Toxicant) 10 | HP: 93/93 | AC: 2520 (14 Tch, 2217 FF) | CMB: +7, CMD: 21 | F: +12/16, R: +12/16, W: +7/11 F: +14/18, R: +14/18, W: +9/13 | Init: +3 | Perc: +15, SM: +2, Darkvision 60' | Speed 20ft | Bombs: 9/16 | Active conditions:

I haven't honestly read through the ship combat part in the player's guide. But faster play sounds good, in pbp it might easily slog on for weeks (and is there something to do for all the players?)

Of course, if the ship combat is fun/meaningful/epic/etc. we can have it. Would there be any idea for using the ship combat for battles that actually contribute to the plot, and just fast-forward to boarding in random encounters?

Yeah, swim... Probably the only campaign where it actually matters. I think Chaenath took the ring of swimming? Rogar has Besmara's Tricorne, which gives +2 to swim checks (and turns into emergency lifeboat...). I considered taking a rank, but since swim isn't a class skill it felt somewhat waste. Now I regret not taking the Internal Alchemist archetype... holding breath for 16 hours would mean he could swim proper "dwarf", both feet planted firmly to the bottom of the sea :)

How about Rogar brews potions of Touch of Sea for everyone, and then we'll get some potion sponges so they could be used even underwater. Just as a backup... Also air crystals on crafting list.

Female Elf Witch/7 | HP 38/38| AC 17 T 11 FF 16 | Saves F 6 R 5 W 8 | CMD 14 | Per +10 | Init +1 | Active Spells False Life 11/11, Flight Hex, Mage Armor (AC 19)

I remember reading that only one PC (I guess the captain?) gets to do much in pathfinder ship combat rules.

I can give up the ring of swimming to someone else. Chaenath gets a bonus to swim from her familiar. Chaenath also has that Water Lung Hex trick to use on anyone for pretty much unlimited water breathing at least as long as she can recast the hex every minute. Great for exploring.

How about we head towards TideWater Rock and have random encounter adventures on the way as the PCs figure out that it's too ambitious a venture for them right now?

Roll20 Maps Loot

Alright so I'll storytell the ship's combat. Maybe tonight I'll get your first target. Vacation last week, GenCon next week, work travel the following week leaves this week busy as all at work, but rest assured we're doing this!

I'm going to be gone from 1st-5th roughly. I won't have very much internet access so I won't be able to post, but I will be able to keep up.

This all coincides with my birthday being on the 4th.

Can you GMPC me? Use your best guess what a good Judgement would be for an encounter, and I'll stay at range, trying to align a shot for Coordinated Shot, thanks to Solo Tactics.

Here is a suggestion for what to do after the ship is taken.

For the crew:

1) Give all of them the chance to surrender. Any takers will be brought to the center of their ship and part the second happens. If they say no, wound them but don't send them to the Pathfinder equivalent of Davy Jones.

2) After everyone on that crew has either surrendered or been properly taken care of, we tend to the wounded and place them in a longboat along with the crew that doesn't want to join us and is able to row a longboat. Leave them with enough provisions for a couple days out at sea, then leave them to the fickle tides and winds.

For the ship:

1) Either take command of the new ship or scuttle her. If we take command of her, we'll need to do the whole new paint and name thing as well as a new captain. We have half the old crew and half the new crew on it to avoid mutiny.

2) For the scuttle of the ship, we lay tar on the deck and leave a few kegs of powder. We sail a good distance away, but still within view. Someone gives a speech, then either myself or Alessandra takes a shot with a burning arrow and we watch the once mighty vessel go out with a bang!

We could do that, OR...

You know what's better than having one ship under our command? Having TWO ships under our command!

For ships, maybe the number of ships we have and how upgraded they are can determine what kind of opposing fleets/ships we can catch and board and which ones we need to run away from? That'll keep us from just selling every ship I think.

Otherwise I think we're ready to proceed?

Roll20 Maps Loot

Having a couple ships together is fine, won't change combat much, you will still need to overcome the ship's officers.

So, a second ship, and hold the captain for ransom?

The Aspis Consortium has offices in quite a number of towns, and the Captain is probably motivated enough to help you to get himself ransomed.
