Navasi tries to slide the ship left, but the joystick jams and the stalled ship cruises toward the junkers.

Failed slide maneuver, so drift forward 1 and can’t change heading. Map updated. Sorry for sucking so bad, guys >.<

Navasi botches a slide roll, while the goblin ships scream forward with little regard for anything. They open fire with their flak guns, causing the shields to light up brightly.

Flak gun, snap shot: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (7) + 5 - 2 = 10
Flak gun, snap shot: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 5 - 2 = 223d4 ⇒ (2, 2, 4) = 8
Flak gun, snap shot: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 5 - 2 = 173d4 ⇒ (2, 3, 2) = 7

The front shields prevent all damage, but collapse after the last shot.

Obo returns fire, but the goblin ship are quick and nimble - none of the shots hit, though he comes quite close.

Piloting: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29

Easy, girl. Easy does it. Having taken fire from the goblin ships, Navasi steadies Weydan's Watch to see where they go while preparing the ship's thrusters to get out from being surrounded. "Gonna get us out of this swarm, hopefully putting another shield between us and those gobbos! Get ready with some alternative firepower until we can get those front shields back up!"

Assuming we'll move last, waiting for a map update to determine maneuvers.

When the goblin ships achieve first strike on their forward shields his heart sinks a little, but Altronus is determined not to let it show to the others. Two of his hands itch to help out by taking control over one of the weapon systems, but for the moment he hovers behind Obozaya's shoulder and continues to shout out encouragement. "You were so close! That second one just barely missed. You can get them this time!"

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16

The ship is tier 4, so that was not convincing enough to be helpful

Per the discussion thread, Keskodai/Jelloarm will need to be botted for a while. I suggest Keskodai's action this round is to balance shields based upon the goblin ships' ending position relative to us.

Although appreciating Altronus' encouraging words, Obozay loses a bit of confidence as her previous two shots missed. This time, she decides to fire only the turret weapon, focusing more intently on scoring a hit.

turret weapon ATK: 1d20 + 4 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 4 + 3 + 2 = 16

Navasi, in case you weren't already aware, unless you take some other action, you can always attempt the evade stunt along with our normal movement. In the one previous starship combat I've played in before, that was the pilot's default action.

Okay, sorry for the confusion!

"C'mon girl, you know how much I love those curves." Seeing the junkers closing in, Navasi kicks the thrusters into high gear, circumnavigating the enemy ships with evasive maneuvers and positioning the ship behind them.

Drew the line of our trajectory, I believe that meets our speed and maneuverability requirements must let me know if I missed something.

Looks like a good move to me

Navasi kicks the engines to full power, and spins to face the tail of the goblin junkships. Obozaya opens fire, and obliterates one of the small metal plates that the goblin ship used for a sensor. Keskodai rebalances the shields, moving power to the front.

Fire away, another one like that, if you please!"

Quick question, as I try to understand the sparse descriptions of the captain crew actions: if I wanted to use the aid another version of captain encouragement for a gunner, would the 'same skill' have to be a Piloting check or could I use my BAB? The DC 19 Diplomacy check is a bit tough.

Also, if we need to bot Keskodai, I propose having him try to target weapons, since that was the first action he tried to perform

As I understand it, if you want to assist gunnery, then you would make a DC 10 gunnery check. The gunnery check allows you to use either BAB or piloting, so I believe it is your choice. Even if I'm wrong on this point, Obozaya is currently using BAB for gunnery, so Altronus can also use BAB with no problem.

@Obozaya: Are you only going to be making single attacks each round? If so I won’t worry so much about facing the ships, since you’re on turret anyway. I was trying to keep the goblins in the forward arc so you could open fire with our biggest guns.

I'm fine to try two weapon attacks as well but I worry about that -4 penalty. I think all of my rolls thus far would've missed. If Altronus is up for it, perhaps he can hop onto guns as well next round? Obozaya can stay on the turret weapon and Altronus can attempt shooting the directional weapons?

Yup I can switch to weapons. I almost did this round, but the attacks were all quite close for a while so it seemed like the +2 bonus was important. But getting in a second roll would likely be even more important. I'm still working on figuring out strategy for starship combat, clearly...

So I've run a decent number of starship combats with my local SFS group - I'd suggest focusing on single attacks for now, unless we're sure that we're going to hit. The -4 can be pretty damning. We can focus on taking down one ship at a time.

Keskodai frantically flails away on the computer, trying to help the gunners take out some of the goblin weapons.

One shots versus two shots at -4: assuming the damage per hit is the same for both options, if you have to roll 15, 16 or 17 (on the pure die) to hit, then you take one shot, otherwise you take two shots. In most encounters, to hit is less than 15, so you take two shots. Casino rules. It changes slightly when damage differs between shots.

At this point, I would assume you will have very little trouble blowing the remaining two goblins to bits. To avoid a somewhat tedious dragging on of the encounter, and in the interest of remaining time, I'll accelerate this a bit

Upon seeing the fragged remains of one of their ship, the goblin song falls silent, and the ships turn around. One makes a dash toward the nearest sun, while the other turns on an afterburner-like device. After being fired off for several thousands of kilometers, the device malfunctions, blowing up the ship and spreading the debris across the sector.

Space combat over!
