Yeahhhh I'm not a huge fan of the rule myself. Pathfinder already tends to incentivize taking bigger flat bonuses over more interesting magical abilities, getting to ignore all sorts of DR (silver, cold iron, adamantine, alignment-based) is just icing.

The bolt of acid lightning flings for the drow's hand and hits the demon. the demon's defenses dissipate some the damage.

reflex: 1d20 + 23 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 23 - 2 = 23
He took 23 HP of damage

To the drow's surprise the bolt backfires and hits the drow. Note he has template that caused this effect.

You need to make the same reflex save for take half the damage.

As he says that, a golden-red nimbus surrounds his hands and spreads out to cover Karnog's entire body.
