Night is falling fast as six battered and bruised soldiers scurry away from a crushing defeat at the hands of the Odish armies. Duke Simeon Geb ordered a retreat which swiftly became a route. With allies fleeing in all directions and the enemy behind, is it safe to hole and and rest or risk the woods at night?
There is another soldier with you all. He is a older man, maybe late 40s, with more salt than pepper in his stubbly beard. His shield is riddled with arrows and his spear is cracked. He also carries a short sword at his belt.
Go ahead and start talking things out while moving or decide to stop and rest. Please include a physical description of your character along with your first post.
Riley Vesper |
Slightly shorter than the average man, Riley Vesper treads carefully, longbow ready. He's nearly middle-aged by now, and it shows in his slightly greying hair. He keeps himself clean-shaven, and his clothing orderly, all according to military code.
Likely the second oldest person here, Riley walks at the front of the soldier group, looking ahead for danger.
perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
He speaks very little, occasionally growling slightly at the thought of being discovered.
Ashling_Frost-wing |
A young girl, pale skinned wearing a dark purple cloak hood drawn if only barely. She pulls her cloak off, hair white as snow well trimmed , shining violet eyes. An emotionless expression on her face, not a hint of worry nor care. Wearing black leather armor, clearly not military regulation. A silvery pendant hanging from her neck. Various other types of blades strapped around her, a beautifully crafted gladius standing out among them.
She pulls up the sleeves of her cloak counting various knives strapped to her wrist. She pulls her sleeve back down, she says nothing making little to no noise her breathing barely audible.
Staring out into the distance, humming to herself she starts walking further into the forest.
Ganterra |
I'm inventing various details about the Torrio people and the circus. If you have any issues with what I'm inventing, please let me know
You see a young man who, at first glance, would appear to be a normal soldier. In his mid twenties he is wearing a well crafted breastplate and a buckler, has a guisarme in one hand and a crossbow attached to his harness.
Your second glance would take in his black hair, his dark complexion, and the tattoos he bears on his body and you would realize that he is clearly a Torrio, one of the aboriginal people living in the forest north of the River.
Then you would notice that there is clearly more to the man. He is wearing a couple of colourful scarves that seem out of place on his otherwise utilitarian clothing. He is carrying a large backpack that has several items strapped to it for easy access, including a healers kit.
At his feet, almost lost in the grass, is a small leopard wearing a leather harness to which are attached some bags that are obviously partially filled.
"Well, that was quite a disaster. Are any of you injured at all?
I've met a couple of you before but not all of you. Maybe introductions are in order.
My name is Ganterra. As you can see, I'm a Torio. I'm still a loyal citizen of Pollexia, of course.
The one thing that you NEED to know about me in the current circumstances is that I'm a remarkably good doctor. You keep me alive and I'll do my best to keep all of you alive as well.
I'm ok in a fight but certainly not great. I'll be trying to mostly keep my head down as I think that I'll be a lot more good to everybody patching up the wounded rather than killing the enemy.
Until I recently "enlisted" in the army I worked for the Andallan Travelling Circus. As with all Carnies, I picked up a wide range of skills to complement those I learned from my people. I'm a pretty good hunter, and am reasonably good dealing with people.
This is Harthfield, a leopard I raised from a cub. He likes to think of himself as my personal bodyguard and who am I to argue with him? Don't underestimate him because of his small size, he is quite decent in a fight."
Trent Walker |
Trent marches through the forest with the ease of a man familiar with armor. His youth belied by his attitude, he acts like a man twice his age. Even in this disorganized rout, his gear is neatly stowed and his pack ready for inspection.
His close cropped hair is hidden by his helm, but the face visible shows the scars of many a battle where he stood and refused to fall. On his shield are the arms of a minor house from Clabbereton. He holds his chin up and back straight, even in this disheartening slog.
"That wasn't the way that battle should have gone. Where did those reinforcements come from?" He keeps his voice quiet. "Good to have a sawbones, I'll do what I can to keep you on your feet."
Robert the Highlander |
Robert walks through the forest trying to keep the noise low. He is tall and slender, but with muscles that show he is a man of the mountains used to live in the harsh environments of the wilds. His hair is red as the flames of battles, with white appearing as a sign of his until now long and peaceful live. A guard dog runs happily, oblivious to the defeat that just happened, besides him.
He grabs his bow with one hand, the other he uses to keep balance while walking over roots and small plants.
"I'll tell you what, tin can, the reinforcements came from the same place as the rest: from betrayal. Those damned mucked invaders, they don't respect anything." When Ganterra speaks he turns to look at the doctor "I remember you from camp, you aren't a bad doctor, but if you get near me with leeches things will get south fast, doc, hehe"
He stops to hear the forest and keeps walking when he hears nothing strange, closing in near the old man with the broken spear.
"I don't quite remember ya, but anyway we are all friends now. The only friends we have. Name's Robert, what's yours?"
Ashling_Frost-wing |
Ashling watches the doctor at work curiously, With him out like that, further movement will be impeded. This presents danger, due to our current situation
Trent Walker |
With a sigh Trent looks over the group. "We make camp. Camouflage it the best we can, put our best eyes in the trees. Vesper, Robert, you're archers, can you climb to get a lookout? Not too high that you can't get back down in a hurry if need be."
"You, girl, I don't know your talents, but by the looks of you I'd guess you can hide pretty good. Can you scout around the area and see if there's any way they might circle around us?"
"I'll take a look around and see if I can find us some fresh water and maybe some food. Everyone try to stay in earshot. Otherwise we'll never know if you go missing."
Someone's gotta do it. All I wanted was to be a simple soldier. Now it looks like I'm in command. BAH!
He sets down his pack with Ganterra and Beck, and stalks off into the woods looking for food and water.
Survival: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Ganterra |
Are we using Pathfinder rules here (ie: stabilized character can be moved without danger) or Realistic rules where moving him will likely kill him? No problem either way but need to know. Following assumes that in Ganterras professional opinion moving him would kill him
"Moving him now would likely kill him. And we can't just abandon him. You keep watch while I operate. It will take about an hour, but I should be able to get him on his feet."
When he gets the chance to operate Ganterra will heal deadly wounds on him using both his surgical tools and 2 uses from his healers kit.
Taking 10 for a 25 means he gets back 4+his level hitpoints
Riley Vesper |
Riley looks back indignantly at Trent. the first words he's spoken since the battle are, Boy I don't know what you think you're doing, but the difference between berries that are safe to eat and the ones that make you s!!$ yourself and die ain't somethin' a man in a bucket's gonna see. I'll find food, because if any of us are gonna attract attention, it'd be you.
Take 10 for 17 survival check
Ya just said you were gonna keep the good doctor safe, right? We need everyone doin' what they're best at.
Robert the Highlander |
Robert laughs at the image of the young man giving orders as a grizzled veteran "On my way, Cap'n!" He passes near Beck and Ganterra "You take care of him, Doc. No man should bleed to death in a god forsaken forest because some fakkin nobles though "We got nothing to do in monday, we should invade"... I'll go watch. If you hear somebody cry that means the dogs are looking for this bone."
He looks for a nice branch to climb and crouch in and hides there, bow in hand.

After discovering that wet trees aren't that easy to climb, he takes his time. Taking 10 for a total of 16

Which of you soldiers has the highest rank here? i'm a free lancer contracted by your military, meaning until my contract is completed i follow those orders. Also my name is Ashling, not girl. She looks at Riley and Trent not moving waiting for an answer to her first question.
Riley Vesper |
Riley grunts at Trents quick acquiescence, nodding curtly.
I believe, it would be... Beck over there... He states quietly shaking his head. Poor man... Failing an order from him, each of us outranks non-military. Discuss it with them. If we survive together for another two weeks, I might remember your name, until then, you're "girl." He indicates with his head before going out finally.

I don't care whose in charge personally, it's simply a matter of understanding what I do and keeping that knowledge confined. However due to the current situation, we should take efforts to learn what we each can do and work from there as right now. We are all one mistake away from dying, I will look around as suggested if i find an enemies i will kill them and report back. Not being military has it's benefits, for example i won't be killed on sight She walks away scouting around the the area for a good distance.

Moving a stabilized person has a chance to make them start bleeding again.
Ganterra expertly removes the foreign object and stitches and binds the wound. He also manages to make Trent feel damned useful by employing him to hand over the bandages.
Riley manages to return with a pot full of wild thyme and some chantrel mushrooms. He also manages to locate a small stream close to camp, though the water is a touch questionable.
Ashling melts into the surrounding foliage and stares off in the wrong direction looking for enemy movement.
Robert, after some trouble, scampers into the branches of a nearby spruce. Once his eyes have adjusted, he notices the tell-tale flicker of at least 6 torches heading toward the camp. If they hold their present course, they'll pass within earshot, but will miss the camp.
What do you do?
Robert the Highlander |
Robert climbs down and goes back to the rest as silently as he can.
When he arrives near Ganterra and Trent he whispers. "At least 6 torches. As many or more treacherous dogs. If they don't change course they'll pass near but won't find us. What do we do Cap'n? Oldy doesn't seem like he's up for a run." He looks back to where the torches come from. "Maybe they don't expect to find resistance, if we kill or harm some of them they may retreat. But if they are decided to fight... that could mean problems."
Ganterra |
"You're assuming they're enemies. They could be more stragglers like us, or just villagers or the like. Why don't we stay hidden and see exactly who they are"
Riley Vesper |
You're right. We can't just attack anything that passes by us. We'd be nothing but thugs at that point. If I see the wrong uniform on them though, they're going down. He growls out.
We need to stay silent.
He quietly stashes the food he found by a stump.
Don't know what to roll for that.
Ashling_Frost-wing |
Ashling appears from the shadows, whispering Nothing on my side...Which direction are these stragglers? i can go check
Ashling_Frost-wing |
Fine then, they live for now

The group hunkers down to wait and soon they see the light of torches growing brighter until they can see the shapes of seven men dressed in Odish livery, lightly armed: scouts.
Ganterra shifts his weight to avoid casting shadows and a small twigs snaps audibly.
Only two heads turn, eyes narrowed. After a moment, both turn back to the trail.
Just then, Trent adjust his position and his armor clangs loudly off a nearby shrub.
All seven heads snap to the noise and they draw weapons, heading straight for you!
You each have a surprise round, then you all go first. HERE is the map link. You may join in whatever way you wish. The site is run by a friend of mine. It is night time, hence the dark. The aura around the soldiers is their torchlight. Good Luck.

Riley shoots true and puts an arrow through one man's face: he falls stiff as a board.
Ashling's shot goes far off target.
Robert's shot looks true, but embeds itself into a thick tree limb just in front of the soldier's chest.
I forgot to mention it, but crit fails and successes will have added "features". Also, watch out for cover :)
Ganterra |
Ganterra moves up, and takes out and fires his crossbow at N14 (The bad guy shouldn't have cover, hopefully the tree provides me cover from many/all of then).

You guys are up. Welcome to the campaign :)
Ganterra |
Ganterra will shoot at the one at N13. I am hoping that I can move so that the tree that I'm behind does NOT provide cover. If that isn't true let me know and I'll move next round. Move action: reload

All shots miss and the scout sidesteps Trent's sword cut...right into Harthfield's jaws. The panther tears into the man's thigh and drags him to the ground.
One of the scouts shouts in Odish.

Two arrows fly at Harthfield and two at Ganterra.

Ganterra |
Following gets a bit conditional. Sorry.
I don't think that I'm overplaying Harthfield. I'm assuming Ganterra is ordering him around via whistles and pointing. It is on the order of what a well trained sheepdog can do in real life. But if you think I'm pushing things too hard let me know
If the one that Trent hit is still alive Harthfield will hopefully end it.
Bite: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24 for damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
If that ends the guy, Ganterra will order Harthfield to retreat to F3.
If that bite does not put him down, its time for a couple of claws.
claw: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12 for damage: 1d2 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
claw: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14 for damage: 1d2 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
If THOSE end it, Harthfield will take a 5 ft step into J10
If the guy was already dead from Trents blow then Ganterra will tell Harthfield to go to M12 and attack the one at N13
Presumably use the bite from above, together with trip: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
At the end of all that, Ganterra will move to D3 and drop prone. He will try to hide in the process
stealth: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Ganterra |
I didn't think you were picking on me or anything. I just know that GMs differ greatly in how intelligently animal companions should be run. I've been having the cat act pretty combat savvy and wanted to make sure that I wasn't pushing your limits
Ashling_Frost-wing |
Having hte idea that her archery skills may not be up to snuff Ashling spends the turn taking cover behind tree's and or brush, put's her bow away and draws her Gladius.
