There’s a ship that’s a leavin’ Quent, and on you’ll quickly sign. The captain’s a tyrant, the bosun’s worse, but she’ll a-suit ya fine.
- Song of the Shipwright's Guild

Hello Everyone! I just picked up the first book in the Skulls & Shackles campaign and stumbled upon an incredible group of PbP'ers here at Paizo.com (that's you). I've never GM'ed a PBP game on these boards, but the community here seems incredibly active and vibrant and I'm excited to give it a go.

Character Creation Guidelines
1st Level Characters

Race: Core, APG, UC, UM, ARG (within reason and no custom races)

Class: Core, APG, UC, UM
Archetypes: Core, APG, UC, UM, ARG (stacking is allowed, assuming nothing overlaps)
Abilities: 20-pt Buy

Alignment: No Lawful Good, all else is allowed - assuming you can get along in a party of others
Wealth: Average by class

Character Traits: Two traits, One Must be a Campaign Trait from the Players Guide.

What I'm Looking For
I would like players who can post a minimum of 1-2 posts per weekday.
I'm looking for creative, interesting backstories - not overly optimized character crunches. While there are some dice-focused challenges, this AP in particular relies on good roleplaying, so that is the priority.
Play well with others. If a player makes a mistake, it's ok to point it out, but do so kindly - or in private. If you have a frustration with a fellow player, message me privately first. Let's leave the animosity for the poor merchant ships you're bound to conquer.
While it's ok if you know a little about this game (a previous AP derailed, you've read little, etc.), I prefer players to know little to nothing about what's coming up.
You don't need a full character sheet for the application - just the background is fine. If you do have that, just let me know so I can take a peek at it to get an idea of your crunch.

Character Application
I've borrowed (ok, plundered) the following questions and the pre-game RP'ing from DM Immortal's Recruitment Thread as I think they're a great foundation for my understanding your character. Please answer the questions and then begin the roleplaying.

1. What position do you see yourself eventually in on a ship?

2. How do you feel about piracy in general? (This includes stealing, killing, plundering, etc.)

3. Which campaign trait are you selecting and why?

Roleplaying Introduction
It is early evening in Port Peril. The sounds from the tavern are just starting to pick up as the sailors, merchants and visitors gather for the evening. A halfling woman stands on a barrel in the corner, playing a fiddle and loudly singing vulgar tunes. The bartender, a man missing most of his teeth and one of his eyes, stands behind the bar, wiping the glasses with a cloth that is filthier than the clothing he wears. There are several empty tables and stools at the bar, waiting to be filled.

That's when you arrive…

Recruitment will be open until I have enough characters to make my choice. Which should only take an hour or so, right? :)

Looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!

I would be interested to try this game again, I don't think I have much of a chance in DM Immortal's game (to many applicants and not many openings there)

I was in a S&S game with Henk. I will make some adjustments to my submission but in the meantime the original backstory is in the alias profile.

Grand Lodge

I may be interested in this game, though I dont currently have access to the S&S book. You may have to recomend me a good trait from that book, but I could bust out a char fairly quick.

Grim, I got your PM, but I'll post my response here.

You can get the player's guide here: S&S Player's Guide

If, for some reason, you can't get the guide, let me know and I'll provide some recommendations based on your concept.

Grand Lodge

I can only post from my phone, so I can not download anything right now.

Dark Archive

Be interested in this..I will come up with a concept and post this evening or tomorrow

Dark Archive

actually I am thinking of a duelist human female fighter type or a gunslinger. Like I said I will get some posted soon

Shiver me timbers! Another Skulls and Shackles round up.

Okay, colour me interested in throwin' an oar in't the water.

Should I not make it in't another such adventure I would like t' put me self forwards fer consideration.

O' course. Should I some how make in't both? Well...that be somat else t' work out on the morrow. *Bows*

Basically a complicated 'Gun-mage' is whut I would intend t'be working up towards. *Bows* v(^_^)

much cheers t'ye and yours.

Presenting Alestone Rockridge

1: I see Alestone in some sort of support role, such as cook or surgeon.

2: Alestone doesn't really have strong feelings about piracy. He's a mostly amoral old salt, who always takes the best opportunity available.

3: I selected Peg Leg for Alestone, I thought it best portrayed Alestone's flavor as an experienced, but generally unlucky sailor.

Please note I am getting married on August 5th and will be honeymooning and unavailable through the 8th. If this is a deal breaker please feel free to ignore my application.

Here's Rusk, prepped for another S&S but sadly not accepted.

1. What position do you see yourself eventually in on a ship?
Rusk is a good fit for the positions that require him to hurt people, threaten people with harm, and threaten people's friends and families with harm. Anything else that includes heavy lifting would work.

2. How do you feel about piracy in general? (This includes stealing, killing, plundering, etc.)

Rusk has lived on violence alone for most of his life. He has no qualms with any of the above. He would praobly enjoy them immensely in fact.

3. Which campaign trait are you selecting and why?

Rusk loves to fight, and loves to fight upclose and dirty. For this reason, he has the Dockside Brawler trait.

Dotting, I love this AP so much (But never have even finished the 1st book...) Im leaning towards Sorceress who is aiming for the captains role

I just realized that many of you are probably coming from the other current recruitment thread and possibly weary of rp'ing again. We'll forego any RP'ing here, at least until Immortal's made his selections.

Do, please, answer the questions here, as that's how I'll be confirming applications.

I would love to play this AP.

For your review I present Duo, Human ninja.

1. What position do you see yourself eventually in on a ship?

COOK!!! why? Because, just picture entertainment that some one could have watching a ninja flying around the kitchen making sure everything is ready.

2. How do you feel about piracy in general? (This includes stealing, killing, plundering, etc.)

Duo's a ninja killing is in the job description.
Stealing and plundering are sometimes required to live.

3. Which campaign trait are you selecting and why?
Ilizmagorti Native, Because I am thinking that a Red Mantis assassin or a pirate was the one who told Duo that if he became a good cook there was no were in the world that he couldn't go. (something involving both groups)

background:

Growing up in the City of Ilizmagorti on Mediogalti Island Duo has learned that there are few people in this world you can trust and fewer still that make it out alive. While he was still young Duo learned quickly the harsh realities of not having parents. The rules of the street had been pounded into him well. Kill or be killed and if you can't do that make sure if you are going to steal something make sure you can get in and out before the person your stealing from can react. Otherwise you will find yourself in the best case left for dead. Knowing that you could very well be unknowingly stealing from a pirate or a Red Mantis assassin. Duo had done well to not steal from such people but, one day his luck wasn't so good. Duo had been trying to steal food from some unsuspecting person but, that very person was a Red Mantis in disguise. The Man not pleased with finding Duo trying to steal from him took Duo out into the street. That night would have been Duo's last but, a pirate that had been at the bar the last few nights had been unknowingly to Duo looking out for him. After Duo had passed out from the beating he was still receiving, the pirate saved Duo's life. Duo was then taken aboard this pirates boat and from then on learned everything he could from this man. Duo soaked up all he could from skills in the kitchen to skills of the shadow blades but, these pirates never let him find out there names. The day eventually came that these pirates decided to cast Duo out into the world again. Leaving him with enough money to get by for a short while. As they left port Peril the pirate he admired most called out to him telling him that because he could cook there was no were in the world that he couldn't go and that he expected to one day hear word that there was a pro cook that would never let anyone starve. Duo took this to heart and that night visited The Formidably Maid to begin trying to make a cooks name for himself. The Formidably Maid declined to let him cook for them but, after a few drinks Duo went down to the docks to take in a view of the sea and re think his plans of "attack" to get a cooking job. It was then that The idea came to Duo that he should perhaps join a ship's crew and serve as a cook. Perhaps the navy would be... As this last passing though crossed his mind Duo a blow to the head was the last thing he remember as the waves rushing up to meet him.

Hello Aperture. I have to put the finishing touches on Herbert Degrasse and answer your questions. I am new at this, so please bear with me. I can post twice a weekday without any problem. I have a couple of years experience with D&D and recently switched to PF. The PbP idea is interesting. I really like what the formatting can do for revealing thought process and secrets.
I will finish Herb's profile then get your questions answered. Thanks for your consideration.

This guy is pretty much done but I need to add gear. Will answer the questions sortly too.

here is my revamped application for this game the answers to the questions can be found in the profile. as well as all the other important info.

let me know if you would rather have everything posted in the message instead

1. What position do you see yourself eventually in on a ship?
The bosun seems the most logical position for Herbert. As a tailor he knows his way around fabric and repairs. Learning rigging shouldn't be too tough.

2. How do you feel about piracy and killing? Piracy can only occur when people are making enormous profits, otherwise their goods and wealth would be better protected. The fact that merchants are greedy enough to fill vessels to the brim with valuables and float them across the sea makes them foolish. If pirates skim a few what's the problem? As for killing, its the rule of nature, survival of the fittest. It doesn't bother Herbert.

3. What trait and why? I selected the Eye for Plunder it fits Herb's background. He lost it all in a blaze of glory. He feels he owes a few people. Gold by any means is his goal.

1. What position do you see yourself eventually in on a ship?

Aoro would be fit for a number of roles. Captain, First Mate, Master at Arms, or Master Gunner. While he would like to Captain his own ship he is in no hurry and is not foolish enough to think he is ready for the role just yet. He would be more comfortable in a supportive role, his magic, silver tongue, and ability to spot deception make him suited to any one of the three roles of first mate, master at arms, or master gunner. He is not picky so long as its a role he can be good at.

2. How do you feel about piracy in general? (This includes stealing, killing, plundering, etc.)
Aoro is all about whats practical. He does not really care for morality. He does what it takes and whats best regardless of the morality involved. If kindness gets the best results then thats fine, if bloodshed does so be it. Piracy is just another profession, he is nothing if not professional.

3. Which campaign trait are you selecting and why?
Ilizmagorti Native because it influences his character in a lot of little and big ways. It also fits his character, growing up in the city of the red mantis gives one a very unique moral code. ;)

Grand Lodge

Dang, I have to drop, sorry, work and all.

I am still fixing up the background the one presented earlier didn't fit how I plan to play the character. The finished version will be in Duo's profile.

This guy is pretty much done.

Hey Duo have we met, were both locals of the Red Mantis Isle ;)

i'm interested in playing - I was in a S&S game with this character and we lost our DM - would like to continue playing...

1. What position do you see yourself eventually in on a ship? - I'd like to gear up with appropriate feats towards being gunnery engineer. Given his background as a powder monkey it makes sense.
2. How do you feel about piracy in general? (This includes stealing, killing, plundering, etc.) Piracy is fine, stealing is okay, plundering okay - not so much on killing as a personal action, but not against it when necessary.
3. Which campaign trait are you selecting and why? I took 'touched by the sea' because it fit with his background and I thought it would be amusing to have a fox-shifter with an affinity for water.

Grand Lodge

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I would be intrested in playing this AP, I haven't had a chance to yet. So let me get together my Alchemist and run him thru this if you agree with that. I am going to get everything posted up here shortly for this. I hope that I can be chosen.

1. What position do you see yourself eventually in on a ship?
I see myself as the ships doctor. My alchemist would have the required skills to be able to keep the ships crew afloat.

2. How do you feel about piracy in general? (This includes stealing, killing, plundering, etc.)
I really do not have a problem with it at all. I have been aboard ships most of my life and they seem not to bother me too much.
3.Which campaign trait are you selecting and why? Ancient Explorer

SRD wrote:
Benefit You gain a +1 trait bonus on Knowledge (history) and Knowledge (local) checks, and one of these skills is a class skill for you. In addition, you gain Cyclops or Polyglot as a bonus language.

The Reason Why I am choosing this trait is because my guy is interested in learning about the relics of the past and being able to make a pretty gold off of them.

I pull up to the bar looking over at the man and smile slightly. Can you please tell me sir where I can find a place to make some copper for the night? Also may I have a glass of water please? I am parched and have no coin at the moment. I can how ever help you out if you need, I am an alchemist. I can whip up some items for you in batter for bed and a meal for the night if you care. How about some pills that you drop into water that will cure your worst hang over? Hmm I can produce you some for a nights stay and a hot meal?

Henk here as well. I don't think my chances on the other threa are good due to the others RPing up a storm and being awesome. If accepted there, I will drop from here and visa-versa. On to the questions..

1.What position do you see yourself eventually in on a ship? Master of arms perhaps war is in Henk's blood(as wella s rum) and he would take to it well.
2.How do you feel about piracy in general? (This includes stealing, killing, plundering, etc.) Henk has no problems taking other people's things at the point of a sword. He does have a problem with the more brutal crimes such as rape and murder for the jollies and said perp will find themselves quietly sabatoged.
3.Which campaign trait are you selecting and why? Buccaneer's Blood. Henk is the soon of a whaler and pirate and has been workign on a ship and harpooning as soon as he could hold a harpoon. His father gave him the family harpoon and some gold and set him on his way. 'Come back to the Shackles when you have a new life, and perhaps a wife as well. This creaky knee needs a young'un to bounce on it."

*Sneaks over and hugs Henk2* (^_^)

Dun't be in'a dumps!

1. What position do you see yourself eventually in on a ship?
Making sure the tenets of Besmara are followed.
2. How do you feel about piracy in general? (This includes stealing, killing, plundering, etc.)
It's easier than diggin' the gold outta rock, ain't it? It's violent business, but he takes no joy in needless slaughter. Needful slaughter is A-ok.
3. Which campaign trait are you selecting and why?
Pegleg, fits his backstory, also, if allowed he's got a hookhand and just one eye.

Crunch:
Dwarven inquisitor of Besmara with the saltbeard trait from the ARG. One pegleg, hookhand, and eyepatch. I'm torn with wanting him to be a barbarian too, not sure if i'll dip or not.

Hey everyone, as I see it, here are the applicants thus far:

Arcane
Sasha Neville - Tiefling Wildblooded Sorceror
Lanliss Rainscribe - Elf Alchemist
Aoro Osiris - Aasimar Tattooed Sorcerer

Divine
Chumbeard - Dwarf Inquisitor

Martial
Sunny - Elf Monk
Alestone Rockridge - Dwarf Monk
Rusk - Half-Orc Fighter (Brawler)
Henk - Human Fighter

Skilled
Herbert Degrasse - Human Rogue
Duo Skybreaker - Human Ninja
Seijiro Hakamura - Kitsune Rogue

Did I miss anyone?

While I won't be super-picky about this, I would like to have each group represented by one player, so keep that in mind as you apply.

I am using this second alias but mostly the same character just some minor revamps (if you prefer the human build I can go with that but it needs to be re-worked to comply with the creation guiddelines.)

Plunder away GM Aperture! There are an amazing bunch of players on the board and no matter who we both pick it'll be a great crew!

Ah. Got the list updated, Sasha. I'm good with your tiefling application.

And thanks for the permission, Immortal!

Room for one more? I hope?

I was going to offer for a Barbarian, but looking at the application list, I am thinking I should find a divine character... if I am allowed to still submit...

Give it a try

@Tactstat - Recruitment is definitely still open. And don't worry about a category being full - just worry about having the best character in that category!

What about Phelonious BloodGill, a halfing Oracle (Water and Community Guardian)

1. What position do you see yourself eventually in on a ship?
1st mate and magical support. (as a primary controller, with back up healing) "I might not be the roughest tumbley-iest thing out there, but you should listen to my ideas on how to keep us safe, and in the mean time get us rich!"

2. How do you feel about piracy in general? (This includes stealing, killing, plundering, etc.)
Though Phelonious started life as a carefree happy go lucky halfing, he rapidly was consumed in a search for knowledge. He is currently on a quest to learn everything there is to know about the Ancient Empire of Ghol-Gan. Perhaps what he can learn about them can help him save his people from further atrocities. In the cause of learning, no expense should be spared. Though there are certain acts that he will object to, in particular, unwarranted violence towards women and children, and the capture of halflings to be sold as slaves.

3. Which campaign trait are you selecting and why?

Ancient Explorer - Knowledge Local - I find it perfect for a archeologist turned pirate

"Excuse me, good sir, umm.. Excuse me... yes, down here... I don't suppose you have anything with a high enough alcohol content to be sterile? Thank you, I was suppose to meet a man about a map... I don't suppose you know who he might be?"

Failing Phelonious, my other choice was a melee barbarian :P

Sigh now you guys have me thinking about this! Druid would be really nice too... I shouldn't have read the players guide!

Although you have put Alestone Rockridge in the "Martial" role, he's not a big brawler monk. He's given up a fair amount of his offense for bard-like support ability. Although given your categories, martial is probably the best fit.

the beginings:

A small girl about 5' 3 enters the bar her black hair doe in ragged pony tails that are off kilter and uneven lengths barely pointing of her hir from her forehead region are tiny horns. Her deep purple eyes with pupils larger than a normal human, she has purple lip coloring trying to hide what appears to be a wound that never healed right; a cut from the center of her lower lip stright down to just under the chin.

She wears dirty red pants and what appears to be an old unwashed jester's tunic covered in blood stains. she wears a scarf around her neck almost as if she is trying to hide something.

she surveys the room noticing what appears to be an arm wrestling competion going on. she meanders through the place mumbling to herself finidhing her mumbling as she walks past the larger of the two wrestlers and brushes her hand across the back of his shoulders.

almost an instant later he loses the match as he collapses with exhaustion.

Finally she settles in on her target. a man looking to sign on a crew. she approaches to make her mark.

If I may throw my hat into the ring, I am applying as an Island Tribal shaman, who in game terms would be a Human (Mwangi) Druid (Shark Shaman) named Matumbo.

GM Aperture wrote:
1. What position do you see yourself eventually in on a ship?

I see myself as a Quartermaster. While bloodlust consumes Matumbo during battle, he likes poking around for usable items around the bottom of the sea. While this could anger Besmara, he does his best to clean up more beautiful artifacts down there in reverence to her.

GM Aperture wrote:

Piracy is the same level of predation that exists in nature. The strong prey upon the weak, and eventually the strong are attacked by the next strongest.

GM Aperture wrote:

Besmara's Blessing. While serving his island home, a small pirate crew tried to attack his home, and failed. While Matumbo defended his home and drove the killing blow in an officer, that man's eyes grew wide. He whispered Besmara forgive me just as the blade twisted in his gut and his eyes rolled back in his head. After that, the name of Besmara kept ringing in Matumbo's ears. He took one of the captured jolly boats and hopped from one small island to the next until he finally came to Port Peril.

Matumbo looked around and sniffed the air. His eyes narrow as the faint scent of blood fallen from the last night's bar fights just envigorates him. He goes off to the bartender and starts to interrogate him. Is this the place where I can find a ship? I'm in search of a bit of fun and... he takes a deep breath in and gives a toothy grin maybe a fight or two if they come along. Is there a place nearby where I could try my hand at a fight?

Yo Matumbo, nice to see you again ;)

The shakes and sweats lasted nearly a week. The swaying boat and Herbert's swimming stomach were ill matched. Water sustained him the first four days. There were times when he thought of disembarking via the nearest rail, but he made it. Made it where?

The city of Port Peril bustled with an unmistakable early evening buzz. Tasks and chores were finished or put aside and people sought diversions from the humdrum. Herbert felt normal poke its scared head back into his life for the briefest moment.

"I'll never touch that s+%! again," Herbert says out loud to no one in particular.

His stomach growls, another strange occurrence. Welcome back appetite

Herb heads toward the smell of food and the sound of a fiddle. As he enters it takes a moment for his eyes to focus, another lovely reminder of his recent run of poor choices. The barkeep eyes him.

"Food and light wine." Herbert's dry voice requested.

Inviting another master into my life is unwise. I better stick to one drink.

I am Re applying Duo.
He is know an Oracle of Life - Human

1. What position do you see yourself eventually in on a ship?

COOK!!! why? Because, Duo's Mother "told" him that if he could cook there was no were in the world that he couldn't go.

2. How do you feel about piracy in general? (This includes stealing, killing, plundering, etc.)

Duo doesn't care what others do around him as long as they let him cook and give him his fair share.

3. Which campaign trait are you selecting and why?
Touched by the Sea because Duo's mother is an Undine and his father a Human pirate.

A young looking human Male calmly walks into the tavern. His dark robes slightly getting in the way of his hands as he brushes open the door. Pulling his hood back Duo smiles as he glances around the place. The noise of the place seems have no effect on him, as he wanders in with what looks to be a traveling spell book in hand. Sitting down at an open table he sets the book open with an ink pen on top waiting patiently to be helped. When the bar tender comes over Duo picks up the pen and scribbles something down. The man nods and comes back later with a drink. Duo then sets the inkpen down again and sits in a way to welcome anyone willing to talk.
