1,000 posts, huzzah! Am I correct in remembering that we can take one night time activity without being fatigued tomorrow? Also, have I ever seen the mentally challenged guy anywhere else besides guarding the stairs at night?

Correct on the one nighttime activity without worry; you can perform up to two more 'after hours,' but those run the risk of tiring your character out.

On the guy chained near the stairs to the officers' quarters...no, you've never seen him elsewhere on the ship.

Culder climbs out of his hammock and heads towards the stairs. When he arrives he sits down outside of the dullard's reach but in plain view. "Ye know," he says "I used t'have a chain on me too. Someone took it off me 'n' m'wris' don' feel righ' without it. Wha's yer name?"

we don't have to rp the whole conversation if you don't want (or if its slowing other stuff down); im going to try to influence his attitude towards me

At first the big fellow doesn't say anything--he simply stares at the only man on the ship (other than, perhaps, Captain Harrigan) who is remotely close to his size. Culder gets the distinct impression the fellow's at a loss for words because the big oaf is seldom spoken to.

"I'm Owlbear," the man says sullenly. "Used to be Leroy but am Owlbear now. Crabs're all dead."

Indeed, there are dozens of unmoving crabs littering the deck near the big man. Nearby sit two pails; the stench indicates that at least one is used as a makeshift chamber pot. The man reaches into one bucket and pulls out--thankfully--just a handful of dead crabs.

"Wish Scourge would get Owlbear some more. Dead crabs make dull friends."

Then Owlbear looks forlornly at the chain attached to his ankle. "Owlbear have chain, too," he says forlornly. Then she suddenly looses a barking laugh and bellows, "Keeps me from fallin' overboard, though!"

Human, Barbarian [sea reaver] 2/Brawler [mutagenic mauler] 1 | HP: 14/33 | AC 18 (12t, 16ff) | F +7, R +4; W +3 | perception +9, initiative +2

Culder chuckles at the large oaf's declaration. "Mine were fixed t'a anchor. Made it real hard t'swim iffin I did go over."

gods, this retard's my favorite crewman so far...

"Ye lookin' fer some more live frien's?" he asks, "I could look aroun' 'n' see if I can fin' any... An' if ye wan', I could take these dead ones away? Scourge keeps me busy all day bu' I migh' be able t'come talk with ye some nigh's? Ye like bein' called Owlbear, or ye like Leroy better?"

The Man's Promise | Ship Actions | Current Battle Map

Owlbear looks at the dead crabs uncertainly before coming to a decision. "You can take the rest of 'em away--I'll just keep Crabby here for company." He clutches the largest of the dead crabs to his chest.

"My name.... I been Owlbear ever since...this," the big man says glumly, showing Culder the remains of an old tarring-and-feathering. "Scourge calls me Owlbear.... Yeah, best to just call me Owlbear. What names you got?"

Human, Barbarian [sea reaver] 2/Brawler [mutagenic mauler] 1 | HP: 14/33 | AC 18 (12t, 16ff) | F +7, R +4; W +3 | perception +9, initiative +2

"Folks mos'ly call me Cap'n," Culder answers gathering up the crabs, "I don' think ol' Harrigan likes that much but I been called that a whole lot longer than I been here fer him t'care."

I gotta get some rum up here and see how Owlbear here handles his drink...

"I'll try t'come visit t'morra," he says getting ready to leave, "ye only like crabs 'r is any little critters good?"

The Man's Promise | Ship Actions | Current Battle Map

"Crabs is best--they only nip my fingers a little," Owlbear replies. "Little nippers!" the man hoots at his own...joke? Then he adds in a hushed tone, "No rats. No. Them buggers give me the creeps--'specially the big ones."

I was only going to suggest this to Culder, but apparently the only place I revealed something of interest/note was to Vincent in a spoiler. I'm going to reprint it here, as it should be common knowledge, since you all go about the ship on a daily basis.

There's a cage hanging from the mizzenmast on the poop deck. Inside it is a rotting corpse, and atop the cage sits a haggard parrot. "That was Harmak Gruft. He beat the Cap'n at dice one night a couple weeks back. Should've admitted he was cheatin' whether he was or not--might've spared him that fate."
**************************

@Culder: The parrot might make a good pet for Owlbear.

With a nod to his new friend, Culder heads back to the bunk room. Finding Jordan he elbows the cook's aid awake and whispers, "Hey, I got a bunch o' crabs ye could make a stew outta, 'r somethin' 'n' I need t'trade 'em fer whate'er th'frack parrots eat..."

Day 5: The Wormwood's Main Deck

The ship's bell rings all hands on deck for breakfast and job assignments. You notice something a bit different this morning, though: Jape and Fipps dawdle around, making sure they're the last ones on deck (but not to the point they'll get punished for being late).

The meal's not bad, though the bread's getting hard and the first weevils make their appearance in a few of the rolls (Protein!). As usual, your antagonists (Maheem, his lady Shivikah, Syl Lonegan, Aretta Bansion, Fipps Chumlett, Jape, and Narwhal the Dwarf) are gathered in their own little group, chatting and occasionally throwing dark glances in your direction. Interestingly, Crimson Cogward's eating and talking with Sandara Quinn.

It looks to be another decent day, a bit more overcast but the clouds aren't threatening.

Before I forget...Culder: a Survival check, please, then see the spoilered results below if you hit the target DC(s).

Culder Only Survival Result 15-19:

It looks like the weather will hold today but might turn rainy tomorrow.

Culder Only Survival Result 20+:

The weather looks like it'll be fine today but might turn rainy tomorrow. Hopefully, you'll be able to dodge a storm the following day.

Plugg and Scourge give out the job assignments as usual. Plugg's in a surprisingly good mood, clapping his riggers' shoulders or patting them on the back. Scourge, however, seems to be in a fouler mood than ever, giving Aghon a particularly harsh glare as he spits out swab duties.

Shaken awake by Culder, Jordan blinks at him for a second. "Whuz...crabs? Sure, sure, make a lovely dinner," he yawns. "An y'want parrot food? Jus', jus' bring it by the kitchen t'morrow sometime." Rolling over in his hammock, Jordan returns to his slumber.

Sorry, I totally missed that exchange.

Profession (Cook): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Gradually, it seems as though Jordan's cooking skills have been improving. Not quite a master chef, he's at least picked up some tips and tricks from Ambrose in the last couple of days. Still, as Maheem said the other night, the food is edible, and at the end of the day, it's better to have your chicken burnt than clucking back at you.

Stepping out of the kitchen for a breath of fresh air and a chance to see a friendly face, Jordan goes in search of Tilly Bracket. Upon finding her, he strikes up a conversation with her for a moment. "You should stop by the kitchen more often, cheer the place up with a short song or ditty," he says, "Kroop and Grok ain't much for carrying a tune, and I already told you how my singing is treated." Giving her a chance to mull this over, Jordan adds, "Even if you don't sing, the conversation would be welcome,"
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 17

After conversing with Tilly, Jordan returns to the kitchen to look around for...something to use for parrot food. What did parrots even eat? Crackers was the last think he could think of hearing a parrot even wanting to eat, so Jordan began looking for crackers.

Would this be a cooking check, or a basic INT check to know what a parrot would eat?

Day 5: The Wormwood

Vincent's diligence helps him (barely) accomplish his daily tasks in satisfactory order. Fatty Fipps, having only a mute friend to talk to (kinda boring and one-sided conversations), opens up some and talks and jokes with the sorcerer, Rosie, and Jack. In doing so, Fipps proves that he's got a mean-spirited sense of humor and an ear-grating squealing laugh. Even Jack Scrimshaw, who Vincent put off a bit earlier, chats more with the sorcerer than with the sweaty and mostly unfunny Fipps. Rosie, for her part, mostly glares at the fat man and his silent half-orc comrade. It appears she's neither forgotten nor forgiven them from the Day 2 Breakfast Brawl.

*************************************************

Jordan is forced to get the crew's supper ready on his own due to Kroops's drunkenness. While he goes about his business, he wracks his brain to try to recall what parrots eat. Seeds, certainly, but what else?

Jordan Only: Knowledge Nature Result 10+:

Most parrots eat a diet that contains nuts, flowers, fruit, buds, seeds and insects. Seeds are their favorite food. Domesticated ones would probably go for crackers, though.

During his break, he seeks out Tilly and discovers she's one of the day's runners, carrying messages throughout the ship. Despite the overcast day, the lady's sweating mightily, but her glow increases when she sees Banner approaching. She chats a bit and then quietly asks if Kroop has a stash of rum in his quarters or the galley and if the cook's mate might procure her a mug to quench her thirst. "Last night's ration was...off," she confesses. "I could use a little pick-me-up to get through this afternoon."

There are indeed a couple large tuns of rum in the kitchen; Kroop wouldn't be likely to miss a mug or six.

Tilly drops by the galley later in the day, hoping for some rum but also seeming happy for a chance to rest and chat with the cook's mate. As they talk, Sandara Quinn enters without knocking, asking Jordan if he's seen any rats or other pests during the day before exiting quickly. The priestess of Besmara returns later in the day--about a half hour before the second bell--to again ask about any pest sightings. As she departs, she gets a mischievous gleam in her eye and says, "Sorry to have interrupted whatever you were cookin' up with Tilly earlier."

*******************************************

When Aghon makes his comment to Giffer, the nervous yellow-and-green-haired gnome actually smiles briefly. "Don't think I've ever been called 'radiant' before.... I kinda like it! Syl calls me a 'Little Citrosity,' whatever that means--I don't think it's a compliment."

A bit later in the day, the quirky gnome decides to trust Aghon enough to whisper, "See how sickly Shivikah looks? An' now Aretta's looking pretty pale, too. I think...I'm pretty sure...Shivikah's a wererat. And now she's infected Aretta as well! Don't let them bite you!"

Yes Aghon, it appears that your advanced scurvy spell has taken hold of Aretta.

Knowledge (Nature): 1d20 ⇒ 7
All Jordan can recall is that parrots eat either seeds...or crackers. For some reason, the only time he'd heard a parrot talk, it was asking for a cracker. Jordan figured he'd better make sure a bit of both were available for Culder when he came by.

Jordan has he mug ready, and quickly fills it for Tilly on her arrival. Enjoying the conversation, he comments to Sandara that there haven't really been any rodent sightings in the kitchen since he's come on board.

Jordan does have a response ready for the priestess when she stops by again. "If you were really sorry, you probably wouldn't be stopping by so often to check for rats," he teases, a grin on his face.

Sandara grins at Banner's words. "It's good to see ye're broadenin' yer horizons, as it were," the redhead says with a throaty chuckle. "Tilly seems to be one o' the kinder souls on this tub. Samms tells Jarvis that Kroop and his new mate--Banner, is it?--should have plenty of bones available after their cooking. She also suggests that Jarvis visit young Jack Scrimshaw, a swab who has a rare talent for carving bone and wood.

She also quietly hints that perhaps Jarvis would be better served not to be chummy with Culder. "Maheem, Narwhal, and Psycho Syl all bad-mouth your big friend every chance they get, though Plugg himself actually thinks you're both first-class riggers. But Scourge has something against the big fella...and he's got Plugg's ear. It'd be a shame for you to take abuse just because you hang with someone who's so...gruff and antisocial."

Night 5: The Wormwood's Main Deck (Bloody Hour & Beyond)

Second bell chimes, ending the work day and gathering the crew on deck for Bloody Hour, supper, and rum rations. Scowling deeper than usual, Scourge announces that there'll be no real punishments this night, moments before smacking Sandaran and Crimson with a knotted piece of rope (commonly called a 'rope bash,' dealing 3 points of nonlethal damage) and telling the new meat their work ethic sucks and that there'll be worse tomorrow if they put in another weak effort. Plugg laughs when Sandara's punishment is administered to her backside, commenting afterward that "Bloody Hour be gettin' bloody borin'; mayhaps we need be spicin' things up a bit."

After the meal and rum (Fort saves, please, for the diluted rum), Giffer Tibbs and the day's two message runners (Crimson and Tilly) call it an early night, worn out by the day's toils (with, perhaps, an assist going to the diluted but still somewhat potent rum).

Shortly thereafter, before any nighttime diversions can get underway, Plugg returns to the deck leading a tall, muscular man with a shaved head. Parts of the fellow's torso are still covered with patches of tar and dingy once-white feathers. He looks tough and dangerous...at least until he spies Culder. Then he gives the Captain a big goofy smile and wave, catching Plugg's attention. When Plugg turns away, the big fellow shows his huge empty hands to Culder and sadly mouths the words, "No parrot."

"Any o' you new meat dare to go toe-to-toe with me Owlbear?" Plugg asks the crew. Turning to Culder, he adds, "Other than you. Can't have me best new rigger gettin' hurt durin' a bit o' sport, now can we? Plus, seems to me you two lunks be friends now. Might be a bit o' shenanigans if you was to fight one another."

Throwing a small sack onto the deck, Plugg says, "There be 100 gold coins in there--a fight purse for the winner. I'll also personally match any bets against me Owlbear. Simple rules: hand-to-hand combat only. No weapons, no magic. Any takers?"

Aretta Bansion tries to sneak up behind Aghon and push her hated enemy forward, but instead the woman trips and sprawls across the deck, getting her laughed at by most of the crew.

"I want him...PUNISHED!" Bansion screams at Aghon. "If the bastard's too yella to fight Owlbear, I'll give 10 gold to anyone who'll wipe that smirk off'n his face!"

Plugg turns to Scourge in amusement, asking, "Lovers' spat?" Then he turns his cruel attention on the cleric of Hanspur. "Whaddaya say, mate? Think you can topple the Owlbear? There be 100 gold in it for ya if ya succeed...."

What Culder said. :)

Night 5: Main Deck of the Wormwood

"You had no qualms about walkin' right up an' strikin' me--a woman!--the other mornin'!" Aretta nearly spits at Aghon. "What's the matter? Know you haven't a prayer 'gainst a real opponent, holy man?"

Aghon looks from Aretta to the big galoot she wants him to fight and back again. I've found it is much easier to knock out women in my life. Much easier than trying to knock out a hulking behemoth like that specimen. He points at Owlbear. If everyone thinks it would be entertaining to watch me dance around trying not to get hit, for as long as possible before the inevitable two hits, him hitting me and me hitting the deck, take place, I'll glady sacrifice my face for the betterment of the crew's morale. I just don't see how that would be terribly entertaining, unless... maybe Jarvis plays me a pretty ditty, and I actually do dance while trying to avoid being hit. Hmmmmmm, I wonder. Aghon says and looks from Jarvis to Owlbear to Scourge to Jordan to Culder and back around again.

Edit: Forgot the Fort save. Which reminds me, should we think about running another purification mission on all of the rum to make sure it no longer has any effect whatsoever?
Fort Save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

D'oh

Aretta Bansion opens her mouth to protest Aghon's added stipulation but then closes it again without uttering a word. Similarly, Scourge and Plugg huddle and share a whispered exchange before breaking apart.

Perception Result 16+ to Overhear Plugg/Scourge Conversation:

They realize that Jarvis's singing will give Aghon an advantage in the fight but don't think it'll affect the outcome.

Unrelated stuff....
Culder Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Aghon Init: 1d20 ⇒ 8
Owlbear Init: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (20) - 1 = 19

"Agreed!" Plugg says with an evil grin, pushing Owlbear forward. The big fellow drops into a defensive crouch and balls his fists.

Aghon Perception Result DC 10:

Owlbear is blind (or close to it) in his left eye. If you attempt to fight Owlbear from that side, you can attempt a DC 10 Acrobatics or Bluff check each round to easily avoid Owlbear's clumsy blows.

Aghon: If you fail the Perception check, you may want to wait until Culder posts before throwing any punches. :)

As soon as Owlbear is pushed forward and attention is focused on the impending brawl Culder attempts to slip away unnoticed...
Stealth: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22 score!

While everyone else is preoccupied he rushes to the stairs Owlbear usually guards. Hurrying up them while they're unguarded he looks to see what additional security waits up there.

Stairs to the Officers' Quarters

Culder slips away easily enough and makes it most of the way up the stairs leading to the officers' quarters before stopping. The rumors of a cyclops skeleton guardian are true. It wears the ragged remains of a chain shirt and stands in a corner just off the top of the stairs. Its head swivels in the Captain's direction, regarding him with its one empty eye socket, but it makes no move to attack...yet.

The other reason for Culder's halt upon the stairs is that he hears voices coming from above. One voice he recognizes as the Ship's Lady Mage. Another harsher female voice comments that the new cook's mate must have decent talent, as the meals have been better than Kroops's usual fare. A cultured male voice you've never heard before chimes in his agreement.

It appears the people in the cabin above are unaware of your presence at the moment.

Aghon sizes up his opponent looking for any weaknesses.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23

And notices he has a blind left eye!!! So Aghon does his best to stay in Owlbear's blind spot and for the moment does nothing but keep happy feet, and balled up fists.

Bluff Check to avoid blows: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

In case you didn't notice Aghon is leveled up. I chose different spells that will not be active until Aghon prays this evening. I also put all of his gear in the "dropped to the ground" container in Hero Lab, so that his character sheet reflects his actual movement and skill checks. I also put in the nice character line quick look items using a nice template someone shared with me. If you'd like the link just let me know I can post it in the discussion board. I'd like Aghon to use the "fighting defensively" action for this round. Which will give him a -4 to any attacks, but makes his AC 12 for the round. I'd also like him to use his standard action to ready an action to attack if/when Owlbear enters his threatened square.

Jarvis smiles. I'd gladly sing a bit. Seems pirate fights are always better to a tune.

He begins to sing, letting the courageous words float over Aghon.

IC active. BP 9/10 remaining.

Night 5: The Wormwood's Main Deck

Now sooner does Jarvis start his song than Owlbear snaps out of his crouch, throwing a mighty uppercut at Aghon's chin. When he misses by a country mile, the confused pugilist gives the classic Which-Way-Did-He-Go? look.

Aghon is up. Please also roll next round's Bluff check as well.

Seizing the opportunity Aghon swings a fist as best he can.
Fist Attack: 1d20 - 4 + 3 ⇒ (1) - 4 + 3 = 0
Swiiiing and a miss. Perhaps this will be much more entertaining than I had originally thought. We'll dance around swinging wildly and never connect.

Aghon dances around in a clockwise circle trying to always keep himself in Owlbear's blind spot.

Bluff: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21

The Man's Promise | Ship Actions | Current Battle Map

Owlbear easily dodges Aghon's counter, then swings again. Once again, though, Aghon's suckered him into a wild miss. "Aw, stand still!" the big man wails.

Aghon is up again.

Culder freezes. Keeping his eyes on the skeleton for any sign of aggression, he listens for a moment longer to the voices...

Is there a woman on the ship that I've seen but haven't heard speak yet? What about the captain? You said he was of similar size to me and Owlbear, so I assume I've seen him, but have I ever heard him speak or is it possible that the male voice is his? If its not him, are there any other men on board that I haven't heard yet? Also, I'm going to ready an action to run off if there's any sign at all that anyone noticed me.

Aghon abandons his defensive posture for the moment and swings a wild haymaker.

Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14

Damage?: 1d3 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

I think my calculations are all right there? +1 from Jarvis' IC, +1 BAB, +1 Str modifier... Then damage gets the STR and Jarvis' bonuses. Here's hoping Owlbear isn't one of those people that's considered armed when he's unarmed. :)

After throwing his punch Aghon again dances in clockwise movements attempting to stay in Owlbear's blind spot.

Bluff: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13

The captain's cabin girl. You think the second female voice belongs to the master gunner...Kline or Krine or something like that.

Culder 'the Captain' Hargraves wrote:

Capt. Harrigan gave a short speech on Day 1, and you've also heard him bellowing orders from the wheel and the bridge. It's not him; this fellow doesn't sound very piratey.

Culder 'the Captain' Hargraves wrote:

Not that you're aware of. You haven't interacted much with most of the officers; perhaps this guy's an officer.

Night 5: The Wormwood's Main Deck

Tilly seems unsure of her faith in Owlbear upon seeing what a fool Aghon's making out of him. Still, she turns to Jordan with a smile and asks, "What kind of stakes are you suggesting?"

Aghon connects solidly for the first telling blow of the fistfight. Owlbear grunts and throws another wild right. After missing, he starts whining like a child in frustration.

Aghon: You can keep rolling attacks as long as your Bluff succeeds.

Jarvis: Gonna keep singing for as long as the fight takes?

"Nothing fancy, as I've not a coin to my name, but how's dinner sound? You win, I'll make you any meal you want, for you to share with whomever you choose." Jordan pauses for a moment as Aghon throws a solid punch at Owlbear. "But if I win, you have dinner with me."
