Season of Ghosts

When the Golemworks in Magnimar starts reporting some “problems” with their most recent batch of golems, the PCs are sent to investigate in the hope that the Pathfinder Society can get on good terms with the influential arcane organization.

Season of Ghosts

Sheila Heidmarch, the normally composed aristocratic venture-captain of the Magnimar Lodge, strides into the dining room of Heidmarch Manor, distracted and overwhelmed by the influx of activity in her home. Seeing the team assembled around the table, she nods in welcome, draws her thoughts to the task at hand, and in a deep voice lays out the Pathfinders’ mission.

"Greetings, Pathfinders! I hope the coming and going of so many fellow agents through the manor has not been too much trouble. It has certainly been trying for me, especially with several expected agents never reporting in, leaving me to pick up the slack," she sighs. "If you could assist me with a small task that I wouldn’t normally impose upon agents of your rank and experience, it would doubtlessly save me much stress and increase the lodge’s efficiency and security. You see, I ordered a small contingent of protective constructs from the Golemworks for the lodge’s use — a type of construct unique to Magnimar and the Golemworks called angelic guardians. The artificers there were unexpectedly efficient in processing my request; the guardians arrived more quickly than I anticipated and now wait to be unpacked from their crates and positioned about the grounds to serve as sleepless sentinels."

Heidmarch pauses and smiles. "If only all such business dealings could be concluded that quickly! At any rate, I trust your tactical acumen is sufficient to place them strategically, and taking care of this for me would lift a great weight from my shoulders and allow me to focus on other matters, not the least of which is tracking down these missing agents. You’ll find the crated angelic guardians stored in the greenhouse, where they’ve been placed out of the way along with some of the first shipments of Varisian relics brought back by our field agents, which must be analyzed, catalogued, and then sent on to the Grand Lodge," she explains. "The guardians should be programmed to obey the commands of anyone displaying my personal wayfinder. I trust you’ll return it to me when you’re done arraying the angelic guardians about the grounds." Sheila draws her platinum wayfinder from her pocket and sets it on the table, unclasping the chain that fastens the compass to her belt. "I can’t imagine such a simple task would provoke many questions, but if you have any, now’s the time to ask."

A half-elf, dressed in leather armor and with a pair of well loaded bandoleers across his chest, steps forward, without too much purpose or bravado (Most Pathfinders seem to exude over self confidence, not this man.) "Hey. I'm Damiel, one of the last minute fill ins. Couple quick questions here..." He reaches over to retrieve the wayfinder, taking a quick awkward look at it while avoiding too much eye contact.

"Umm, do these constructs come with instructions or are we just supposed to wing it? I'm fairly familiar with them but can't say I've programmed them before, mostly us Pathfinders just end up destroying them you know?" He slides her wayfinder into his pocket and continues.

"Another question I guess, umm, do they have deactivation switches or protocols or something? Just in case you know. If I, or I mean, we, happen to screw up the program, hate to have to blow them up to get them to quiet down and all." He scratches the back of his neck and steps back into the safety of the group.

I'll let you all figure out where to place them, I've got +15 K Arcana so should be able to hopefully get them to work at least.

Enora lets her feet dangle underneath the table. "So you want us to set up your security? What's your priority?" She shrugs. "Common thieves? Teleporting wizards? Wyverns claiming the manor as their own?" She giggles.

"Anyhoo, we'll have those golems set up in a jiff."

Hanzi looks pretty surprised. Did you really make me travel here all the way from Goka just to be your golem assembly person? I mean...Ill do it I guess. It beats traveling all this day for nothing. But a little consideration would have been nice.

Hanzi stands tall and is dressed in a faded green suit of Great Armor in the Minkaian style. His face is covered with an oni style mask which has a hole carved out by the mouth which is unusual. It is kept functional but not with the level of high polish you normally see with Samurai. I am Hanzi Lorain. Formerly of the Jade Regents regime in Minkai. When that regime fell to a Varisian outsider. His eyes narrow and he practically spits derision at Sheila Heidmarch - Hanzi is clearly not fond of Varisia. I made my way south as a Robin ultimately finding myself in the employ of the Way of the Kirin and Amara Li. I am a steady blade hand.

He removes his mask revealing a surprisingly flat and lizardlike snake face. I am here to explore report and cooperate....so cooperate I will. Lets go see these Golems. Is there anything special about your wayfinder?

"Well, while some of you are likely already familiar with the grounds here, I understand that some of you are...less so," Heidmarch replies, glancing at Hanzi with one raised eyebrow. She reaches into a drawer and pulls out a map of the estate grounds as well as a floor plan for the interior, laying it out on the table before you.

"A complete map of the grounds - that's the greenhouse there in the southwestern corner," she explains. "It should help aid you in deciding where to set the guardians. As for programming, they should already be programmed to accept the instructions of anyone holding my personal wayfinder, as I said a moment ago. All you will need to do is present it to them and they should be utterly compliant. The wayfinder itself doesn't hold any special properties, but it bears my name and that is what the guardians have been attuned to recognize."

Heidmarch pauses, noting the clear disappointment and irritation on some of your faces. "I can’t imagine this task will take you too long, though, as the angelic guardians are fully mobile and will go wherever you tell them to so long as you’re displaying my wayfinder. Once that is done, I’d prefer to have you remain close at hand; with us down these extra hands, I’d like to have trusted agents on call for any urgent matters that might pop up."

"Well. Let's get to it. Then we can enjoy the manor." Enora flops off of the way too high seat. "I'm Enora, by the by. It's a pleasure to meet ya'll."

A tall, well muscled, half orc raises from his chair and looks back at it when he hears it groan with relief. He gives a shake of head and a wag of his finger at the chair before turning his attention back to the Venture Captain. The half-orc is dressed in simple, well used, and multi-mended vestments of a priest of Nethys. He also wears a proudly displayed holy symbol of Nethys but it doesn't appear to look like most other that you may have seen. This holy symbol is painted 3/4 black and 1/4 white.

"Sounds simple enough. At most maybe couple of hours work. Then time relax. Karn like job." A large toothy grin spreads across his face.

Karn reaches out to take the hand of Sheila Heidmarch and gives it both a shake and a kiss before turning to leave the room.

GM: What does Sheila Heidmarch taste like when Karn kisses the back of her hand?

After leaving the room, Karn pulls out a small notebook and jots down a few quick notes for incorporating into his book later.

Sheila Heidmarch smiles slightly as Karn clasps her hand in his and then kisses it. "I'm glad to see that some of you aren't too put out by handling such a simple task. Perhaps I'll have something more engaging for you before very long," she remarks.

As Karn kisses the venture-captain's hand, he gets a brief taste (and whiff) of vinegar and salt...much like how pickles taste.

Sounds simple enough. It makes sense to have experienced agents place the sentries...less seasoned agents might not have enough perspective to ensure the best results. a lean man of Taldan stock says as he extends his hands to all present.

I am Mykel, of the Cassomir Therinors, pleasure to meet you all...do we have time for a drink before heading out? A mug of good stiff coffee would be wondrous right now... he says. His weapon and armor trail streamers made in the colours of Taldor. The wickedly curved blade signifies his training as a rondelero, masters of the falcata and its deadly style.

"I could mimic her handwriting, but I do wonder if they recognize the handwriting or they have an alternate method." She shrugs. "My magic won't be useful, but I can use some good old fashioned ink if you want."

She looks at the lizard man closely. "Just make sure you really want to this."

Venture-Captain Heidmarch raises an eyebrow at Mykel's question but then sighs and shakes her head in a bemused fashion. "Well, I suppose some of you have put quite a few miles behind you to reach Magnimar...or perhaps quite a few drinks the night before?"

"Nevertheless, yes, I believe a bit of coffee or tea can be arranged before you get to work," she continues, rising from her chair and heading towards the door. "Besides, it's not as if the guardians will be going anywhere. So have your coffee first if you like, then go and see to your task."

A few minutes after Heidmarch leaves you, a young man dressed in Osiriani fashion bustles in with a tray of cups and a steaming pot of coffee. "Here you are, please enjoy," he bids you before leaving you to it.

Hanzi shrugs It is worth a try. I can always purchase an erase scroll later to clean it off. Having a backup t try to control them with might come in handy

Smelling the coffee as it makes it way past Karn turns and follows the drink and its bearer into the room. "That smell good. Me have some." Karn says as he gesticulates at the server.

It's a great way to get ready...thank you, young man.Mykel says as he drops a bit of milk and sugar into his coffee.During my brief stint in the army, we often had to drink this black in the field. Not the worst, but a bit unrefined. I must get some more for back home too...my stash is running low. Had some great beans from Qadira...very high quality.

"Coffee? Why not." Tea is better but I don't want to stand out. Damiel makes himself a cup, loading it up on milk and a bit of honey, takes his cup and sits to drink it quietly, trying to remember what he knows of these types of golems.

As you finish your coffee and chat, Damiel tries to recall what he knows about angelic guardians - which is actually quite a lot, now that he thinks of it!

Angelic Guardians are medium-sized constructs (construct traits). You absolutely blew that check out of the water so you can request four bits of information from this list!

Once the coffee break is over, you decide that it's time to go ahead and get your simple, mundane task over with and step outside to make your way over to the greenhouse. The sprawling manor grounds of the eccentric couple Sir Canayven and Sheila Heidmarch have been converted into Varisia’s first and only official Pathfinder Lodge, offering Pathfinders a gateway into the frontier lands that inherited the priceless secrets of ancient Thassilon. The grounds consist of the main manor house, several small cottages, a topiary maze, a well-tended pond near the main gate...and the greenhouse, of course, all snuggled within Magnimar’s elite Alabaster district.

With a shrugging of shoulders, you all make your way out to the greenhouse, anticipating a relatively boring and easy job. The roughly circular glass greenhouse is home to all manner of flora from Varisia and beyond. Any space not occupied by plant life has been stuffed with crates, sacks, and barrels from the field, as well as decorative sculptures hewn from ancient ruins. Mixed among the miscellany are several large crates bearing the iconic emblem of the Magnimar Golemworks—an imposing stone fist.

A quick perusal of the room reveals an adamantine crowbar resting against an otherwise unremarkable crate full of bolts of colorful Varisian silks. The words “Trusty Buddy” are engraved into the crowbar’s handle.

Kn. Nature (DC 19):

As you look around and consider the nature of some of the relics being stored here, you realize that the extreme climate within the greenhouse could potentially damage them.

Trusty Buddy functions as a crowbar in every way, but bypasses damage reduction when used as an improvised weapon and grants a +4 circumstance bonus on Strength checks to open doors or chests instead of the normal +2 bonus. Any of the crates present can be opened with a Str Check.

K Nature, DC19: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (14) + 15 = 29 Damiel straggles into the greenhouse after the others have entered, kind of dragging his feet as he goes. Once inside though the contents appear to be very interesting as he starts poking about and looking worriedly up at the blaring sun and lack of good air circulation. "I'm surprised they stored this stuff in here. With that sun, heat and moisture, I wouldn't be surprised if some of this stuff got damaged."

He points out the golem crates "These are what we're looking for if someone wants to crack them open with that REALLY expensive crowbar." Damn these guys waste three grand on a crowbar? Wow."

Enora scuttles to and fro, letting the blades of grass tickle her feet along the way.

"An adamantine crowbar? You don't see that every day. What kind of crates would you have to open with it? Adamantine ones?"

Enora doesn't ring a bell about everything else Damiel is talking about. I may as well trust him.

Hanzi takes the crowbar in hand and carefully begins to loose the lids off the crates.

He looks ruefully at Enora You had best hold that wayfinder visibly ready to give a command. Don't want anything going wrong. Hanzi could not help but notice the similarities between the Lantern Lodge in Goka and this place. He supposed Sheila might not be SO bad herself. Still this was a pretty cheeky request to make of seasoned agents.

Hanzi had seen Damiel and Enora's faces on recent covers of the Chronicles. He knew they were up to the task of more than...this.

Without much more fan fare he cracked the crowbar at the lid.

"I'm so late! Sorry friends but apaprently this place is not so easy to find for those not well acquainted with Varisia. I'm Ashara and I'm here to join the expedition" a strikingly beautiful black haired woman says while entering the greenhouse and joining the rest of the pathfinders.

"Now...tell me, how can I be of help?", she adds, before moving near the man with the crowbar, casting a simple spell to aid him with his task.

Damiel recalls that while angelic guardians don't have any particular weaknesses or abilities that mimic certain spells, they can breathe fire on their foes multiple times and they can also protect adjacent creatures from ranged attacks by spreading their metallic wings.

Breath Weapon - 60 ft. cone of fire for 6d6, Reflex 13 for half, usable every 1d4 rounds.
Deflective Wings - Automatically deflect a ranged attack vs. one adjacent creature once per turn. No Weaknesses or SLAs.

Meanwhile, Hanzi and Karn get busy popping the lids off of the crates, with Ashara's expert guidance. With 'Trusty Buddy' it's an even easier job than usual and in no time you have the lids open on all three of the big crates that house the guardians. The brass statues resemble angels with sharp metal wings and halos that resembling burning crowns. Surely they’ll prove quite the fearsome guardians for Heidmarch Manor!

Ready to get this mundane task over with, you present Sheila Heidmarch’s wayfinder and the eyes of each guardian emit a bright yellow glow as they come to life. But...what’s this? As the guardians slowly rise from their crates, they flare their wings and flex their arms...and move to attack!

Hanzi drops Trusty Buddy over in Karn's general direction, his experience with constructs informing him that they will likely need some of this starmetal to beat these things down.

He takes his newly minted adamantine sword in hand and draws it fast as lighting,focusing hard on construct before him. Varisians....every time its Varisians. They will be the death of me.

Damiel sighs, his shoulders dropping as the guardians spring to life "Great. Big surprise here." Who stores electronics in a greenhouse?

The half elf starts explaining to the group what he knows about these constructs "Watch out for those breath weapons. Are any of you resistant to fire or cold?"

"Oh my stars and garters!" Enora drops her glass of iced tea she's been discreetly sipping on all this time. "That was unexpected. Less experienced Pathfinders would have been torn apart already!"

"And... what command word are you talking about? Besides the general HALT! I think there's been a mixup in the orders."

Ashara nods to Damiel:"Agreed. Not surprising" but there's no mirth in her voice. She steps near Karn and touches his weapons:"Go. Destroy them before they can do us harm!"

Move and spend 2 channel energy uses to bless Karn weapon with the Bane(construct) property. This is the effect of a feat (Bless Equipment)

Blue Recharge: 1d4 ⇒ 2

As the guardians spring to life, the group springs into action as well! Hanzi kicks 'Trusty Buddy' over towards Karn and swiftly draws his own weapon, delivering a pair of lightning-quick strikes against Blue with a loud *SCREEE-CRUNCH!*

Meanwhile, Mykel draws his own weapon and steps forward to engage Yellow at the back. He, too, delivers a powerful blow against the guardian, though Yellow seems to shrug off some of the damage thanks to its reinforced outer shell. Thinking quickly, Ashara steps over to Karn and spends some of her own power to bless Karn's weapon of choice and turn it into the bane of constructs everywhere!

Blue, faced with Hanzi's weapon, holds its ground and the guardian's eyes flash red as its mouth opens wide and emits a blast of fire that washes over the nagaji! Mykel also feels the flames come roaring perilously close but thankfully they just miss him!

Breath Weapon (Fire): 6d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 6, 5, 5, 6) = 29

Hanzi needs to make a DC 13 Reflex save for half damage!

Like Blue before, Yellow's eyes flash red and a great jet of flame erupts from the guardian's mouth - rolling right over Mykel!

Not seeing anyone being resistant to fire, Damiel shrugs a bit ho hum "Well, lets try cold then I guess. I'll try to not hit anyone.. but accidents happen." He hustles to the other side of the green house for a clear shot at red. He pulls out a small vial and pushes the top in and shakes it violently before throwing it with just the right spin at red.

DC18 Fort Save vs Staggered, its probably immune? Dunno. Precise bombs to save allies from splash damage.

Precise and Frost Info:

Precise bombs: Whenever the alchemist throws a bomb, he can select a number of squares equal to his Intelligence modifier that are not affected by the splash damage from his bombs. If the bomb misses, this discovery has no effect.

Frost bomb*: When the alchemist creates a bomb, he can choose to have it inflict cold damage. Creatures that take a direct hit from a frost bomb are staggered on their next turn unless they succeed on a Fortitude save.

As Mykel dodges the worst of Yellow's flames Damiel hauls off and flings a frost bomb at Red, catching the battered construct square in the middle of its chest. The bomb detonates with defeaning *BOOOOM*, sending shards of ice and pieces of construct flying in all directions! Red collapses to the ground in a twisted, frost-covered wreck.

You can't help but notice a little smile on the corners of Damiel's usually bland lips. Now THAT was an explosion to be proud of!

Blue, still facing down Hanzi, unleashes a flurry of slams and wing swipes on the brave nagaji...
