With just moments to go before the race, Flush continues to tweak the guns, making improvements wherever she can.
Round 4 of 4:
Flush: Improve
Clayton: Go
Jaynix: Go
Knight of Tides: Fail
Kultainen: Fail
Jaynix Cray |
When Flush moves along, Jaynix assumes the rig is as improved as it can be. He wanders back over towards Ratrod, looking to see if he can steal the ysoki's ignition device.
Can I steal his keys? :D
Stealth: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
Sleight of Hand: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17
Game Master S |
I'll allow it!
Jaynix lifts Ratrod's keys from the racer! Judging by the lack of reaction from anyone, it looks like he got away with it.
Jaynix Cray |
SWEET!
Does he have time to drop them in the nearest toilet? If not, he'd definitely not want to have them on-hand when Ratrod realizes they've been taken.
Game Master S |
He can drop them somewhere.
One more post from Clayton and it's race time!
Clayton H. "Claymore" Maure |
removing some grease from his face he gives a few final tweaks to the racer in hopes of improving it's speed
Engineering, speed: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Using shirt reroll
Engineering, speed: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Game Master S |
My apologies, you sir are correct!
Clayton gives the racer another tweak while Flush works out the deal with Velocity.
Before you know it, the siren calls to start the race!
Game Master S |
The siren sounds the final call for the race. All the racers take their place! The race is a 3000' track, and everyone is focused on the finish line.
Despite everything happening near simultaneously, we break it into phases similar to starship combat.
Phase 1 - Weapons!: Everyone with a weapon picks a target and resolves it. The weapons fire uses the gunner's ranged attack, modified by the racer's weapon modifier.
Phase 2 - Race!: Everyone makes a piloting check. The target DC is 16.
The PbP milieu doesn't lend itself well to this kind of fast paced action. SO, in order to keep everyone involved, AND balance the frenetic pace of the race, we'll play this way; ANYONE can post the action for the Starfinder racer, essentially botting if it's not your character. The only rule is that the same player can't do another round until everyone else has rolled. This should give us some of the effect. There is NO initiative, only rounds and phases.
Laboni's Racer!
Full Speed: 500 feet (Base 40+10')
EAC: 10, KAC: 12
Attack: energy weapon (hit causes –4 to Piloting)
Attack Modifier: -1 (Base -3)
Piloting Modifier: +5 (Base +2)

Jaynix Cray |
Just to toss it out there, with our racer's +3 to Piloting, Jaynix's Piloting mod goes up to +17, succeeding even on a roll of 1. Can we assume he's piloting? Then others can take the Weapons phase every round, and we'll auto-succeed at racing until our circumstances (or piloting mod) changes. Thoughts?
if ya'll are cool with that, Jaynix will enthusiastically jump behind the controls during that phase every round. :D
Game Master S |
I may have misrepresented the mechanics. You use the racer's mod. I thought it was the other way, but upon rereading it, I think I was wrong. It's not like starship combat. I apologize, I'm still learning the system.

Jaynix Cray |
Or maybe I misunderstood? This is my first outing. Though it's a shame if you can't actually use the character resources (skills/feats) you've invested in. Let us know how you want to handle it.
Game Master S |
You CAN use those resources, and I've played enough ship combat to know those investments are REALLY important. This scene shouldn't be taken as indicative. Think of this as essentially an intro to the rules and vocab scene (which it is.
Kultainen Vaimo |
I thought the racer mod was the benefit to the pilot check. I think you make the check, but you take the vehicle piloting modification on top of your regular skill. If you don't use the pilots skill then what would be the point in the various racers having skill as a pilot?
Kultainen buys some popcorn, and then goes in search of some pom-poms.
I thought we had a kinetic weapon mounted as well as the energy one?
She golden girl is more than happy to take a pot shot with the energy weapon at Orsis.
gunnery, energy: 1d20 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (3) + 1 - 4 = 0
"Uhhhh maybe someone else should try this."
Knight of Tides |
@ Kultainen/GM: yes, we installed a Kinetic weapon so that we could shoot at Ratrod effectively. Which we should do every round. I think your modifier/roll is off, too: I think it should be just d20-1, if the skill of the character doesn't matter.
Game Master S |
Reading it again without students busting down my door, it's pretty clear that you guys are right. Sorry for the scare.
Kultainen's shot with the energy weapon goes horribly astray. There's still the kinetic weapon!
Knight of Tides |
Okay, in that case I nominate Jaynix for Piloting and Clayton for Gunnery. If I'm "botting" Clayton for the Kinetic weapon...
Clayton's Kinetic Gunnery @ Ratrod's Racer: 1d20 + 4 - 1 ⇒ (18) + 4 - 1 = 21
Game Master S |
Clayton scores a direct hit on Ratrod, giving him a horrible start! Ratrod tries to get off the blocks, but his igniter chip is missing too. He scrambles around and hotwires his own racer, but it's not the right charge and it sputters a bit, clearly not going top speed!

Jaynix can only fail the piloting check on a roll of -2, so unless you get hit, 500' is a sure thing.
With the racers off to a tremendous start, the weapons REALLY start to come out as ever more slugs and beams cross the track as the crowd roars! Most of the shots head towards Ratrod, with a pair towards Lemgem. Ratrod scores a hit though, Starfinders take a -4 to their piloting roll this phase.
