Round 4, Init 19

Question: it shouldn't be darkness, right? Vita cast Daylight, and assuming the Shadow Demon cast Deeper Darkness, they cancel each other out, leaving ambient light. Since we weren't traveling at night, we're in whatever light existed before the fight. Or so I think.

Isis grumbles as the demon pounces from the unseen. She (and Bast) glare at the demon.

"You'll kill yourself before you finish killing us!" She follows up her curse with a cackle of certainty.

Retribution Hex (DC 23 Will), 8 rounds...half damage is done to target of hex. No DR applies.

Tyrion, it is naturally incorporeal. Weakness: sunlight renders it powerless, hence the darkness. Special abilities: possession, spell like abilities.

I live! The holidays were a bit busier than I expected, but I am returned to the land of regular internet and posting now.

Adaxis charges the shadow demon, his head down and howling. His attacks do some damage, but the holy energy of his assault seems to injure the demon the most! Tyrion's first attack hits the demon, doing more damage as the shadow stuff seems to bleed away into the air!

The demon lets out a howl that seems to echo from far away, then concentrates! 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (12) + 16 = 28 Suddenly it erupts into terrible acidic gas that explodes 30 feet in all directions from the demon! Will Saves vs illusion, first! Then Reflex saves, DC 21 for half!

Big Boom Damage, Acid: 10d8 ⇒ (5, 3, 5, 6, 6, 8, 1, 7, 5, 5) = 51

Will DC 21:
The explosion seems shadowy to you, as if it wasn't quite real! You only take 10 damage, 5 on a successful Reflex Save.

The heroes are up!

Vita channels, while Adaxis, Mousebane and Tyrion all slash at the shadows. It's too much for the demon, who seems to melt away under the onslaught.

End of combat!

You are left standing among the bodies of the barbarians and the dead demons, as the darkness fades and the wintery daylight beats down. As you look around at each other, your breath ragged, your brows sweating, a soft snow of tiny nearly ethereal sigils begins to fall. Each sigil makes a soft sigh as it hits the ground, the tiny voices conspiring to utter Abyssal phrases of such obscenity that you blush when you hear them.

The scents of sweaty humans and some demonic smells as well!

Tyrion is able to find the trail after a moment, as he sorts through the scuffles left by the battle. He follows a winding path up the mountainous rocks, stopping occasionally to take a well-hidden path you didn't notice. Suddenly he stops. Desimire’s trail leads to an opening in the rock face of the mountain. Just inside, a flight of stairs winds up through the ancient stone.

You climb cautiously, upwards of 750 feet up the worn, but well-made stairs. At the top the stairs open onto a wide stone shelf, where a three-tiered octagonal watchtower juts out from the stone mountainside.

Perception or Knowledge Engineering DC 20:
The structure is cleverly built. So cleverly built that it appears to be a part of the mountain, but is actually free standing!

The central face of the tower holds a pair of large, ornately etched, stone doors. The gates fit so tightly in the doorway that the seams could be mistaken for part of the artwork on the tower wall. No handles or opening mechanisms are apparent.

Adaxis cracks his knuckles and sets to work on the trap, fiddling with it one way, then another, until he is certain that the trap is disabled. Finally he presses the panel he noticed before and the door opens.

The outer gates swing inward, silently opening into a large chamber covered in elaborate carvings chased throughout with gleaming silver metalwork. A set of enormous gates dominates the far wall of the chamber. Guarding against any passage is a statue of a dwarven warrior clad in armor and holding an axe at its side and a hammer raised above its head. The central part of the chamber’s floor is recessed, with a wide ramp leading down to approach the inner gate. On either side of the ramp, a set of stairs rises to the tower’s upper floors. A balcony and walkway with a silvery railing looking down from above.

With s flourish Adaxis sets the last gear into action and the door grinds slowly open, working despite who knows how many years of neglect.
