Doombringer the DM |
You walk in... and see this scene: A score of identical statues stand in even rows facing a worn curtain. Each statue resembles a faceless woman wearing a pharaonic headdress. Each wields a wicked-looking sickle raised in a killing stroke in one hand, and holds in the other a rune-engraved
disk. Debris and rubble spill into the room from a collapsed corner, claiming two of the statues beneath a mound of scree.
Logain Xanatus |
"Well this looks safe enough..." Logain says with the proper amount of sarcasm. perc: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
"Something did our work for us and killed a couple of Aspis agents and even a babau demon and piled them nicely on a stack in that corner." he continues.

Skipper Daytripper |
Skipper tiptoes forward after Jarkarno until he can see into the room.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
"... looks like," he says a bit nervously. The hall of statues is disconcerting to him. "I wonder what's behind the curtain. They all look like... I don't know, people in a church turned to hear the priestess, or something."
Skipper will cast detect magic from where he is now at on the map, aiming into the room. Also, Kn: Religion to see if he can deduce anything about the arrangement of the statues.
Kn Religion: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
"I don't think even Aspis would have left their own men to rot there," Skipper says slowly, and uncertainly, pointing across the room at the corpses of the two agents. "Maybe this is as far as the Consortium got in the building? That seems a little too easy, though."
He points at the babau corpse too. "Hope everyone who needs them has cold iron weapons..."
Logain Xanatus |

Roary Flamebearer |
Did we do the invis sphere?
Roary will move and exam the first statue, trying to decide weither its trapped or not.
Perc: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21 If its not he'll move along the nortern wall to the west..
Jakarno |
Kiklit steps into the room and along the wall, he stops to examine the statue next to him, especially the runes disc it holds, comparing it to the one he is now wearing.
Morrolan de'Morcaine |
Morrolan uses Ragathiels power to examine the area around the bodies before getting close to them. Sift cantrip
perception: 1d20 + 9 - 5 ⇒ (16) + 9 - 5 = 20 (extra +2 if anything dealing with the stonework)
Morrolan de'Morcaine |
School illusion (glamer); Level bard 3, sorcerer/wizard 3
Components: V, S, M
Area 10-ft.-radius emanation around the creature
This spell functions like invisibility, except that this spell confers invisibility upon all creatures within 10 feet of the recipient at the time the spell is cast. The center of the effect is mobile with the recipient.
Those affected by this spell can see each other and themselves as if unaffected by the spell. Any affected creature moving out of the area becomes visible, but creatures moving into the area after the spell is cast do not become invisible. Affected creatures (other than the recipient) who attack negate the invisibility only for themselves. If the spell recipient attacks, the invisibility sphere ends.
Caster can target someone else for the emanation focal point then walk out of the 10' radius.
Morrolan de'Morcaine |
That's bloody brilliant. If only I had realized that before in a few of my games...
Yeah, someone did that to me several weeks ago. "You can't do that... Hungh, guess you can.
Doombringer the DM |
Alright, so if you are going to cast it now, do so and forever hold your peace. I will tell you how I'm goi to rule that spell before you cast it. When you aren't in combat (and say... Solving a puzzle), I will rule that every two hours IRL is equal to 1 minute in game. That way, you can't just have a whole host of powerful spells up for a long time while your characters are supposed to be thinking about a puzzle, and by extension, you. Got it?
Gabriel Arken |
Back. Sorry about the long disappearance. Google Maps still says access denied when I try to move my icon. Can someone move me 1 left and 2 up from Roary please?
Gabriel enters the room and conducts a quick scan.
Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
He sees the corpses as Logain notifies everyone else. or, since Logain's not in the room, Gabriel points to the 3 bodies and says, "It seems the Aspis may be unwelcomed visitors to this shrine."
I'll let the others examine the bodies, Gabriel thinks to himself as he turns towards the statue nearest the door to examine.
Knowledge?
Know Religion: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
Know Arcana: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (5) + 13 = 18
Know Engineering, History, Nobility?: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Wow. Terrible knowledge rolls. Lol.
Skipper Daytripper |
Skipper moves a few feet forward and draws his bow, maintaining his concentration to detect the presence of magic. 2nd round of Detect Magic, mostly because I can't think of anything else Skipper would know to do right now and it might possibly garner useful information in his third round *shrug*
Doombringer the DM |
Oh, something's pinging magic... And you realize that it is the some of the statues...
The scary part is... Those states that are pinging (I will mark them) have two auras, almost like one is coming from them, and another from their moving hands... Gabriel, if you had examined one of the others, you might have found out that these were magical constructs...In fact, you all checked the first statue which was legitimately normal! Their 'surprise round' thankfully (and in some ways horrifyingly) for you was spent buffing and not trying to kill you.
And since I see that everyone moved, let me roll initiative... So which of you ARE NOT wearing talismans?
Statue 2: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Statue 3: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Skipper: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Gabriel: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Jakarno: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Logain: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Morrolan: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Roary: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Roll off: Statue 1, Statue 3, Roary: 1d20 + 1d20 + 1d20 ⇒ (5) + (19) + (5) = 29
Roll off Statue 1, Roary: 1d20 + 1d20 ⇒ (10) + (15) = 25
Roll off Logain, Skipper: 1d20 + 1d20 ⇒ (7) + (9) = 16
Round 1:
Jakarno
Statue 2
Morrolan
Gabriel
Statue 3
Roary
Statue 1
Gabriel
Skipper
Jakarno, you are up. The statues are in descending order, so one is at the top, three is at the bottom.
You guys have no idea how much trouble this post gave me. BEtween my computer shutting down, and rolls changing, I wanted to rip my hair out.
Logain Xanatus |
Mine isnt in the list either, but I'm as slow as skipper so meh :P. I have a talisman on me, but not wearing it around my neck. But I'm guessing I might want to throw it away now :d.
Jakarno |
I am wearing a talisman.
Seeing the statues begin to move, Kiklit backs away from them and ducks behind one of the unmoving statues. He tries to hide himself from their advance.
Stealth 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (19) + 20 = 39
Doombringer the DM |
Did I mention how much trouble this was giving me? This is the initiative order as determined by the dice in the spoiler:
Round One:
Jakarno
Statue 2
Morrolan
Gabriel
Statue 3
Roary
Statue 1
Skipper
Logain
You easily hide Jakarno (don't you want to attempt to figure out what spell they all cast?), and the statue closest to you moves over... and looks right at Morrolan. Moving 10 feet, it decides to slam into him.
SLAM!: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27
Damage: 1d6 + 4 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 4 + (5) = 10
Trip Attempt: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21
Gabe, you're up.
Morrolan de'Morcaine |
Ow! And that just meets my CMD vs. trip, so I'm on the floor.
spellcraft to ID spells cast: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
knowledge arcana to identify the statues and their capabilities: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
GM, am I stunned or otherwise unable to act? I thought I was next.

.
Well that was annoying. Carefully guarding himself, Morrolan rises to his feat and takes a swing at the statue.
Fighting defensively for a +2 dodge to AC.
attack: 1d20 + 7 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 7 - 4 = 19, if hits damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
.
I should be eating the AoO if someone wants to move near.
Gabriel Arken |
I thought everyone was wearing a talisman. I don't think I specifically said I put one on so Gabriel isn't wearing one then.
Gabriel was taken aback as the statues begin the move. Quickly recovering, he assesses the situation.
Knowledge arcana: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (17) + 13 = 30
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (7) + 15 = 22
Gabriel will shout out any information he knows about the constructs or spells. Order of priority 1.) Special Attacks 2.) Defense and immunities 3.) Special Qualities.
Quietly chanting, Gabriel 5 foots steps down towards Roary and lightly touches him on the shoulder while saying, "May you be blessed by the infinite powers of the void. Swing strong and true mighty warrior!."
Cast Guidance on Roary.
After completing the spell with a nod to Roary, Gabriel flicks his wrist and a wand shoots out of his sleeve into his hand. Surveying the room, the aasimar sets himself for combat.
Swift action Wand of Magic Missile from wrist sheath.
Doombringer the DM |
As you rise to your feat, this thing is not going to slam you... rather it is going to swing it's sickle to hit you.
Attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23
Damage: 1d6 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + 5 + (4) = 13
Trip Attempt: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
Which means he trips you again before your attack Morrolan. Do you want to change what you were going to do with this new piece of information?
Okay, the spell! You realize with horror, that they cast Haste... ALL of them cast haste. Note for squishy people. They normally get two attacks with the sickle per round... now they get three on a full attack.
As for the creatures, this is what you know:
They are Graven Guardians. Their attacks deal extra damage to all good creatures, have Spell Resistance, fast healing, DR/Adamantine, and Construct traits...
Doombringer the DM |
Ha! with fighting defensively my AC is 24. It misses.
You stand up first. which means the AOO goes before your attack. As you have not fought defensively yet, you do not get the bonus for fighting defensively. OR were you attacking first then standing up?
Furthermore, I just looked up AOOs when standing from prone. You take the AC penalty (from being prone) as the AOO provokes before you even stand. That does mean I can't trip you again though.
~~~~~~~~
Continuing on, it is now statue 3's turn.
It speeds toward's Roary with a weapon drawn, slashing viciously!
Attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13
Damage: 1d6 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (6) + 5 + (1) = 12
Trip Attempt: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23 Swing and a miss
Roary Flamebearer |
Im heading out of the office for a while so imma go ahead and roll my round..
When its his turn Roary rages and attacks the one next to him..
Attack 1: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (17) + 17 = 34
Attack 2: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23
Dam 1: 2d4 + 21 ⇒ (2, 1) + 21 = 24 Weapon is normal +3, so it will not overcome DR/Adamatine
Dam 2: 2d4 + 21 ⇒ (4, 2) + 21 = 27
His AC is now 17, CMD is 23.. Did he get that Shield of Faith cast on him? If so AC is 20, CMD is 26..
Doombringer the DM |
Roary, you look like you hurt the statue... but unfortunately not only does not all of your attack seem to go through, but it also seems to be healing damage done to it, the cracks on its body fixing even as I type this...
Which brings me to statue 1. It SPRINTS from across the corridor, looking at Jakarno, but seemingly ignoring him in order to get to Gabriel.. (and yes, his speed is that high at the moment)
Attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29
Damage: 1d6 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (3) + 5 + (4) = 12
Trip Attempt: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
Thank your lucky stars that wasn't a critical hit. Skipper, Logain, would you like to finish up the round? As for the Shield of Faith, I could not find that search term anywhere in the thread, so I'm going to say no, unless somebody quotes a spot where they say they cast the spell on you.
Roary Flamebearer |
I know Freedom of Movement was cast on him and the SoF was mentioned and I said I would take one, but not sure it if was ever cast s why i asked..
Morrolan de'Morcaine |
Gabriel, do you know if there is some kind of damage they don't heal from? Guys, I don't know, but they might not chase you out of the room.
I thought everyone was wearing a talisman. I don't think I specifically said I put one on so Gabriel isn't wearing one then....
Since there were only 3 guards, I assume there are only 3 talismans. If I don't get put down this round, I will try to put on the one I am carrying.
Morrolan de'Morcaine |
I missed that, but I don't think anyone said they picked up any of those. I'm still carrying the one from the guards since no one said they wanted to have it.
Gabriel Arken |
Gabriel looks at Morrolan and says, "I don't know. My infinite brain is still processing the information!"
And "Ouch!"
HP: 18/30
And prone on floor.
Knowledge and spellcraft check results?
Logain Xanatus |
Logain pulls out his shield wand and uses it on himself. He moves one 5ft step forward.
could someone move him 5 ft up plz
-Posted with Wayfinder
Skipper Daytripper |
"Ohdear," Skipper murmurs. He pats Roary on the back. "Sinashaki, protect this traveler!"
Now you can have that Shield of Faith, Roary. It's a +3 deflection bonus, so I think you get a net +2 out of it. The discussion of it was in the OOC thread, when I was trying to figure out who would benefit from buffs.
"Stay conscious, Morrolan, I'm coming!" Skipper calls out.
If people find themselves with the actions to do so, we might really want to pull back into the hall and try and bottleneck them. May not be feasible though, what with the trips *shrug*
Jakarno |
Kiklit steps back from the Graven Guardian next to him and draws a small vial from his spell component pouch. He pulls a small black strip from it and bites on it before intoning an arcane phrase.
Cast Haste on all allies
Someone move me 10ft Up please.
Doombringer the DM |
And now, the guardian right next to Morrolan swing it's sickle three times. Oh dear Asmodeus, please roll low.
HAH! You lucky son of a gun! Morrolan, Gaberiel, you are up!
Morrolan de'Morcaine |
HP: 12 of 35
Alrighty then. I've had enough of this.
Since he didn't get tripped this time, Morrolan moves back away from the statue. withdraw action
Doombringer the DM |
Draw the exact path you take. The withdraw action only lets you negate the first square you move out of. From the path I am imagining, you are simply stepping into another threatened square which means moving from THAT square would provoke.
"If, during the process of withdrawing, you move out of a threatened square (other than the one you started in), enemies get attacks of opportunity as normal." Probably won't hit anyways, but still.
