Cal, why are you bleeding?

GM Nefreet |

If you haven't identified it, do you know what creature type to declare Bane against?

![]() |

Calistan shrugs as he looks at his wounds, wondering why he is in pain.

GM Nefreet |

Ah, I see Grimdoc doesn't have Knowledge (arcana). Since Bane requires declaring a type or subtype, and you couldn't identify it, I don't think it'd work. You can add back that round of use. Although some creatures might be obvious to identify (like Skeletons being Undead), I could see this creature being Elemental, Magical Beast, Aberration, and even Dragon or Outsider.
Since your bludgeoning strike a while back wasn't as damaging as you thought it should be I'll say that you were able to figure out that the piercing end would be more effective. Your memory loss and ability to form new memories came back online at the start of the fight.
Grimdoc's first strike hits hard.
ROUND 3 (BOLD may post!)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Grimdoc, Samuel (6 damage), Creature (45 damage; confused), Calistan (19 damage), Marcèl

![]() |

We can discount the bane. I could not find a ruling on a knowledge check DC to figure out what type of creature is. The DC is well established if you want to know the specific creature name, type and subtype as well as special abilities. However if you just wanted to know if it was an animal or undead or construct, I would think that would be easier. But cannot find anything to support it. So ignore is fine.

Unfortunately, neither of Samuel's attacks break the creature's hide.
Is it confused?: 1d100 ⇒ 52 Yup!
Suddenly, the creature lets go! Snarling, it chases its tail in a circle before biting its own flank.

Marcèl's quick strikes drop the beast! (you recover a Panache Point for dealing the killing blow)
***COMBAT OVER***
The creature itself has no treasure, though it is fitted with a curious leather harness. It's weathered and torn, and has probably been on the creature for some time. A couple feet of leash remain as well.
Checking inside the broken seal you find what must be its lair, as well as the bones and remains of several recent kills. Most of the refuse appears to be from game animals, but one is unmistakably human. Judging by the gnaw marks and their dryness they may be the oldest bones in here. The lair is devoid of any equipment, though you do find a small notebook amid some tattered clothing.
It appears to be a record of mining activities at dig site Caina interspersed with someone's personal notes. Several names are referenced, including "Captain Ashferth", a half-orc guard named "Klangin", one of the colony's blacksmiths "Jerno", and probably a dozen other names (including at least one reference to "Delbina"). A feeding schedule for "Goldy" is included on every other page. Most of the notebook is rather tidy, except for the last few pages. About a month ago the writings suddenly devolved into ramblings and random jottings:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Fourth-to-last page
Woke up freezing in a field. I must be southwest of Caina. Not sure how I got here, but I'm hurt. Looks like Goldy ate all her treats last night. Good thing I had them, else it could have been me! Should probably make the trek back to town. Goldy's giving me that "I'm hungry" look already.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Third-to-last page
Woke up in a campsite near Erebus. Who'd be camping here? Not sure how I got here, but I'm hurt bad. Found a weird dart with yellow fletchings. Not a soul in sight, save for Goldy. Hopefully I can make the trek back to town. Goldy's giving me that "I'm hungry" look.
Scribbles in the margins: Someone's been writing in my notebook?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Second-to-last page
Woke up in a campsite near Erebus. Who'd be camping here? Not sure how I got here, but I'm hurt real bad. Found a weird dart with yellow fletchings. Not a soul in sight, save for Goldy. Hopefully I can make the trek back to town. Goldy's giving me that "I'm hungry" look.
Scribbles in the margins: Alright, who's the prankster?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Last page
Woke up in a campsite near Erebus. Who'd be camping here? Not sure how I got here, but my legs are mangled. Found a weird dart with yellow fletchings. Not a soul in sight, save for Goldy. Hopefully I can make the trek back to town. Goldy's growling like she's hungry.
Scribbles in the margins: I'm not going crazy, am I?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The mine shaft itself does continue horizontally for a distance, but then ends at a cave-in. Other than a few eight-legged tracks, you don't see any signs that other creatures have been back here.

Grimdoc recoils from the barrage of wounds but notices Cal takes the brunt of the damage.
Cal, thanks. Are you ok? I hope you have some healing in reserve. Sammy and Marcel - good job boys. Lets figure out why this creature has a harness. That implies a master was around."
He looks at the notebook and to the others to see if any of them are more bookish. Grim can read but was never his passion.

Reading through the notes, since Gimdoc would likely keep repeating the same thing over and over not realizing he was even doing so, Marcel looks over the contents carefully.
"It appears that whatever is happening to Grimdoc, he is not the first." Marcel says, referencing to the journal in his hand. "Unless these are forged entries, and I cannot be certain they aren't, the man who lived here, who kept that creature as a pet, was forgetting that he had written in this journal and was writing in the journal again as if nothing had happened."

Grim peeks over the shoulder of Marcel as he is reading.
"What is happening to me? This guy making notes was repeating himself. I never do that. Goldie is probably the badger thing. What's with these entries on yellow darts? That may be who is involved with the mines closing.
Grimdoc gathers up his gear if there is nothing left at this site.
"When's lunch?"

GM Nefreet |

Okie dokie. If nobody else posts then we'll go with that plan. I'm imagining that this Humble Bundle drive is killing everyone's internet connections (it has been for me). Since I'm running out the door for dinner in a moment and will be busy most of tomorrow I'll give the rest of the group until Monday to say what they want to say before updating.

GM Nefreet |

Marcèl and Samuel, assume you were ready for combat, since you were on watch; your weapons aren't drawn, but you're armored and not prone.
This is a Derro, a Chaotic Evil small humanoid (derro)
Though derros dwell deep under most of the surface world's cities, very few know of the sadistic creatures' existence. Descended from mysterious fey that once dwelt deep underground, the derros lust for the comforts of the surface, yet the light of the sun causes them to blister, burn, and die. Derros often abduct surface dwellers to perform hideous experiments on them in their never-ending quest to divine what protects those who dwell above from the burning death, yet the intrinsic madness that plagues all derros dooms these experiments to failure every time. In the end, traumatized victims are returned to their homes, memories not quite completely wiped of their ordeal, to live the rest of their lives in vague fear of a nightmare they can't quite recall.
A typical derro fights with a short sword or a repeating light crossbow with plenty of poison bolts. Some derros also carry an aklys—a hooked throwing club attached to a 20-foot- long cord. This cord limits the club's range, but allows the derro to retrieve it after it has been thrown.
Derro leaders are typically sorcerers, although they also make excellent rogues. Many derros wield strange and unusual weapons like hooked polearms, eerie whistling aklyses, long hollow spears that can be filled with toxins, or crystalline throwing wedges that shatter on impact to create horrific bleeding wounds.
A derro stands 3 feet tall and weighs 70 pounds.

I draw my weapon during initiative actually. "Swashbuckler Initiative (Ex): At 3rd level, while the swashbuckler has at least 1 panache point, she gains a +2 bonus on initiative checks. In addition, if she has the Quick Draw feat, her hands are free and unrestrained, and she has any single light or one-handed piercing melee weapon that isn't hidden, she can draw that weapon as part of the initiative check." otherwise my init would only be +8 if caught without my weapon out. So I have my weapon out, but I'm still flat-footed and cannot do anything with it until my action.
