Year of Boundless Wonder

Chapter 6 - Epicenter

It is the morning a couple of days later that you finally hear from Dr Quolorum, again via a note, delivered to the Moaning Spectre inn. (see Epicenter handout in maps and handouts) As usual, he has provided little information so you gather your gear and purchase whatever other equipment you think you need on your way out of the city to make the trek to the rendezvous point. (Yes, you may purchase anything you think you need.)

You reach the slopes of Diremark in a couple of hours. From the distance you can see the small figure of the gnomish professor squatting beside the trail, and he appears to be studying a rock. He is so totally engrossed in his task that he hops up in surprise when finally come up beside him.

”Oh! How mighty sneaky you are! Didn’t hear you coming! Good, good, I’ve always heard Pathfinders were very effective and you have certainly proved that so far. So I’m sure this final expedition to uncover the source of the psychic phenomena to be a walk in the park. Now, I’m sure you are curious to find out the outcomes of my research.” Putting his hands behind his back, and unconsciously adopting the airs of a lecturer, he starts to intone.

”Now, how do we connect all the various happenings thus far? First is to identify the source. That stumbled me quite a bit originally, until a chance comment from one of you following our encounter up on the hilltop - of a vision of ‘a pulsing fungal creature brooding in the dark’. It didn’t register at first but while cleaning my feet a few days ago, I suddenly recalled this. Seeking help from my colleagues from the botany department, one shared on a vague reference to an intelligent and telepathic fungal creature. Ah-ha! Looks like we got the culprit. And that’s when I sent you to collect the vial. But what is the motive? Such fungal creatures are not known to be aggressive, and in fact, rather innocent and curious. Why would it be causing all manners of hostile psychic phenomena. Then I recall the encounter you had with the illusion of a Denizen of Leng. What if this plant had somehow touched the minds of these evil outsiders through some breach across the planes in this region? With the tumultuous history of Ustalav, especially under the invasion of the undead Whispering Tyrant, such weakness in the planar boundaries unbound. The innocent minds of this fungal creature would have been easily corrupted in time, and with its power augmented, led to the various phantom phenoma reported - disturbing dreams and shrieks for miles, physical phenomena such as flashes of red lightning and strange voices carried by the wind, and more. This must have been the mind touched by Lady Illirigarde in her seances, but she herself fell victim to it when her own homunculus was itself corrupted by the plant mind, before she could find a counter solution.”

Dr Quolorum puffs up his small chest, proud of his investigative work and continues. ”With one mystery solved, you probably are asking: how about the final piece - pinpointing the location? Well, nothing could be simpler, a straightforward triangulation of the various phenomena we … uh… you have encountered. The morlocks under the monolith was probably the most informative. For the underground creatures to have been woken up en masse after slumbering for thousands of years would imply a relative closeness of the source of the psychic emanations.” Pulling out a map, he points with a finely manicured finger a spot on one of the tallest peaks in the Hungry Mountains near Diremark peak, north of Lantern Lake. ”And there is our culprit!” He pauses here for dramatic effect, waiting for applause and words of praise.

When none comes his way, however, he deflates and quickly presses on. ”Uh, alright before we set off, I’ve managed to put together a number of items that might assist you. Well, you did find them, but I had to refine them. First, this vial of ointment is what I distilled from the ectoplasm we collected from the hilltop. There is enough for one of you to apply on your skin, which should grant you some protection from mind-affecting effects. Or drive you mad. We’ll see.” He then shows off his tunic on which is painted the symbol you had found earlier under the monolith and identified as the Eye of Gorum. ”Next, based on my research, this sigil you uncovered is an ancient Kellid symbol, and should grant some magical protection to whomever has it on your armor or clothing. Let me paint it on all of you before we proceed.” Then holding up the two boxes in which you had safekept the etheric compasses from Lady Illirigarde, he shares, ”The noble woman did a good job with these. I would hold on to these as we travel to the source. They should grant us some insight against any illusions the mold creature should throw our way.” Then finally, he holds up the vial you collected from the university. ”And this vial of herbicide. You can throw it directly at a plant creature which would not only injure it but also weaken it. Or you can apply it to a weapon before striking the creature, with the same effect.”

So the mechanics of the items:
Ectoplasmic Ointment (Lightning): One of you can apply this greasy unguent to your skin like a magic oil. For the next 24 hours, you receive a +1 resistance bonus on saving throws against mind-affecting effects. If you fail such a save, you can re-roll the saving throw, after which the ointment’s effects end.
Etheric Compasses (Manor): Dr. Quolorum carries these ghostly devices, which help him sense the phenomena’s location. His using one grants all of you a +2 insight bonus on the Will saving throw against the illusory hazard while ascending Diremark.
Experimental Herbicide (University): One of you can throw the herbicide as a splash weapon. Against a plant creature, a direct hit deals 1d8 points of damage and bestows 1 negative level. Every plant creature within 5 feet of where the herbicide hits takes 1 point of damage. Alternatively, you can coat a metal weapon in the herbicide, much as he would apply a poison. The next creature struck takes damage as though it were directly hit with the herbicide.
Eye of Gorum (Monolith): This is an ancient Kellid symbol. Scribing or painting it on one’s armor, clothing, or shield grants the PC a +1 sacred bonus to AC against the fungus’s attacks. Any number of you can use this.
So please decide who will use the ectoplasmic ointment, and who will take the herbicide. Also, please update your AC in your stats line so I don’t accidently use the wrong one.

Some of you may already be familiar with Diremark and the Hungry Mountains.

Knowledge (geography) DC10+:
The Hungry Mountains are a major mountain range in Ustalav. They run east to west through the center of Ustalav, mostly through the counties of Ulcazar and Versex.

Knowledge (geography) DC15+:
The eastern Hungry Mountains are known for driving rain and violent lightning storms. Lately, strangely colored lightning has been troubling the area north of Lantern Lake - the red lightning you have personally encountered.

Knowledge (geography) DC20+:
Diremark is one of the tallest peaks in the eastern range. Its name comes from not only its treacherous terrain, but also from the exceptionally large animals rumored to live there. The few residents of the area report ghostly images and hallucinations on the mountain paths of Diremark. It is said the mountain tries to mislead the wary and take their lives. Many people have simply disappeared.

”We all ready? Any questions before we set off?” The good professor's eyes glint with excitement.

Sira starts to talk, but turns to Yu looking at him expectantly. However, try as he might, Yu isn't able to recall much of the area. Maybe its because of the upcoming attack (and we all know how much Yu really loves to fight), or maybe its the fact that people will be wearing and using ghostly items (gross). In any event, he recalls nothing and looks dumbfounded at the group.

"I would like one of the compasses, while I don't recall anything now, helping to guide the group to the summit might be the best assistance I can provide.

Year of Boundless Wonder

So that's Caena with the ointment, and Sira with the herbicide. (Sira, you add your int bonus as it's a splash weapon.

The professor looks wide-eyed at Yu Khan, then grasps the boxes holding the etheric compasses rather jealously. "Uh, I'll hold on that. Need them to find the way, yes, that's it. I figured out how to read it. Nothing else? Alright, let's go."

Gusting winds howl, and storms darken the sky during as you ascend. A few scrub trees cling to the crumbling granite face of the mountain, and snow is visible higher up the slope. The trail itself is not difficult, although there are some sections that run right against a cliff edge, giving a dramatic, if harrowing, sight of the forest below and Lantern Lake beyond.

It is innocuous at first but as you progress along - catching something moving from the corner of your eye, catching a faint whiff of an unusual smell but fading before you identify it. Eventually though, they become more and more evident. Ghostly images that vanish when looked at directly, bobbing lights hovering off the side of the mountain, smells of rotting fish, strange voices whispering cryptic phrases from nowhere, warm or cold spots in the air, rocks that seem to melt and flow, lightning strikes of abnormal color, and thunder claps that sound distorted or muffled. You try your best to convince yourself that these are no more than hallucinations and visions, as warned by Dr Quolorum, but you can’t help but jump when a bloody human figure dressed in fine but tattered clothes appear right in front of you then vanishing almost immediately. Or grab onto each other for support when the ground starts to melt away, threatening to drop you off the cliff face, only for it to turn back to normal seconds later.

Ahead the trail ends at a place where the mountain has split. A fifty-foot-wide crevasse separates one side from the other, and the only crossing is over a massive boulder that has broken off the mountainside to the east and become stuck as it rolled down. The trail to cross to the other side. ”My readings signal close proximity to the source of the phenomena! We must press on!”

You study the situation for a bit and figure that using the boulder as a bridge is not terribly difficult. However, some caution is still needed for it is a 30 feet fall to the stone ledge below.
You need two DC 8 Climb checks to traverse the boulder, one for climbing onto the boulder and one for descending to the other side. No checks are necessary for the intervening 50 feet. Failure by 5 or more means the character falls 30 feet.

As soon as someone starts the climb, everyone can open this:

As soon as any Pathfinder step within five feet of the boulder, a ghostly image of an aristocratic-looking woman with sad eyes appears and waves at you toward her. You recognize her as Lady Illirigarde, though her clothes don’t quite match what they’ve seen before, and her eyes are slightly too large.

If you cast psychic spells, open the spoiler below if you make a DC15 Knowledge (arcana or planes).

Spoiler:
This is a psychic projection. You can perform a simple ritual that takes 1 minute and suppresses the entire hazard below.

What is of a greater hazard, however, is when the first Pathfinder move across the boulder, the rock itself seems to melt and flow as if it were made of thick mud, threatening to drop you off the boulder! Dr Quolorum yells out, ”This is but an illusion! Resist it! The etheric compass is pointing the true path! Follow my instructions!” While you attempt to resist the effects of the illusion and climb over the rock, the gnome starts calling out the path to take for each of you.

Each person who crosses must attempt a DC 13 Will save. Dr Quolorum’s use of the etheric compass gives all of you a +2 to this save. Whoever used the ectoplasmic ointment gains an additional +1. If you fail, you are shaken while on the boulder, which imposes a -2 to both climb checks. You may not take 10 on the climb checks because of the illusion.

The bearded man trudges up the trail with his eyes closed as much as possible, relying on his bare feet to tell him the path and his faith in Halcamora to guide him. It doesn't help when the lightening strikes nearby though as the loud noise and flashing of the lights still startles the pilgrim.

He gets to the boulder, and opens his eyes, jumping as the ghost appears for a second, before calming down. He trudges up the large rock and tries his best to ignore the illusion. but as much as Genryl tries he can't. "Well you can tell this fungus knows its dirt and mud. Year of Boundless Wonder

It takes three hours for the Pathfinders to get to the cave from there, and all the while the various spectral phenomena continue, if not increasing in intensity. In fact, once you approach within 100 feet of the cave entrance, you begin to hear nonsensical chatter in your minds.

“How do rainbows swim?”
“What is the noise light makes?”
“Now I contain!”
“Ease the frame…”

Clearly, whatever creature is creating the various psychic phenomena is either entirely alien or, more likely, gone completely mad.

You reach the entrance of the cave, clearly the epicentre of everything that has been happening. For once Dr Quolorum has some good sense to stand back and gestures for you to enter first.

Green luminescence shines from fungi on the walls of this cave, casting dim light across the caves, while the winds outside create an animal-like howl as they whip past the entrance. A narrow path runs along the northern edge, and a deep chasm slick with moisture splits it from another ledge to its south. To the east is a bridge, fuzzy with dark green mold. The cave itself is cool, and the air is still.

Terrain info: The whole place is dim light (i.e. 20% miss chance), unless you have your own light source. (I assume you turn it on before entering the cave. If so, please indicate you so I can determine light radius.) The chasm between the west walkway and eastern ledge is twenty feet deep and requires a successful DC 15 Climb check to ascend or descend. At the bottom are various bones and broken gear from previous victims, and would likely soften the fall of anyone plunging into the chasm. (Not that you would want to find out.) The bridge across at the eastern end appears sturdy.

Across the chasm you see a swollen, brainlike bulb encrusted with fungal shelves squatting atop several ropy legs. A wide mouth bisects the bulb’s crown. Finally, the source! It senses your hostile intent and waves its tendrils angrily in your direction as it continues to send barrage of nonsensical words into your brains!

”Fish gobble fish!”
”Tear, rend, split the sky!”
”Fall, fall, fall into molass!

knowledge(nature) DC13 to identify creature:
This is a cerebric fungus, a medium plant creature, from distant realms. It is usually a peaceful creature, curious about races and species. But this one seems to have been driven mad by it contacting the realm of Leng. One positive side effect though is that this would likely make it vulnerable to mind-affecting effects despite being a plant.
For every 5 you beat the DC, you may ask for additional information about the creatures. Or you can just leave it to me to share what I feel you are most likely to know.

While Genryl similarly gets ready his sling, Sira lobs a bomb, smashing it into the creature directly. It is engulfed by the ensuing explosion and singed by the fire. As Thorur moves past forward, the fungi, which had been waiting for someone to come within reach, swings out one of its tendrils across the chasm at him but it slams against his armor and bounces off. As Thorur stubbornly continues to move forward, it strikes again with another tendril, but again, Thorur deflects it with his shield.
ready, tendril vs Thorur: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
AoO, tendril vs Thorur: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Basically, it readied action to attack the first person to come within reach (15ft). That's the first attack, which missed. Then, when Thorur moved out of that square, that provoked an AoO, which luckily for Thorur, also missed. It doesn't have combat reflexes so subsequent movements past it do not provoke.

Yu Khan seizes the distraction caused by Thorur to run past, and the creature does not react fast enough to attack him. Caena steps closer and prepares her sling, while Lucifer fires his. The aim is bad, though, and the bullet drops into the chasm.

The fungi continues waving its tendrils in the air. It swings one to slam at Caena but she ducks under it just in time. Thorur is unfortunately, not so lucky. The plant creature's second tendril not only slams into his gut with great force, it manages to coil around him as well and pull him into the chasm! He falls 20ft to the bottom, landing flat on his front. Thankfully, the piles of bone and other debris cushion his fall somewhat, but he is nonetheless battered and bruised badly by both the attack and the fall.

It then moves a short distance towards the bridge, in parallel with Yu Khan. While doing so, you can distinctively see some of its wounds for the bomb blast healing over itself. (i.e. fast healing)

Climbing up the 20ft chasm wall is DC15 at quarter speed or DC20 at half speed.

Yes, Sira, you may cast featherfall on Thorur. So he doesn't take the falling damage, and he lands on his feet. He is still at the bottom of the chasm, though.

Just a Thorur gets dragged to the edge of the chasm, Sira reacts almost instinctively, summoning his connection to the elemental air to cushion his fall. Instead of plummeting like a rock, he floats gently down to the bottom, landing on his feet.

Caena launches her sling at the creature, but the bullet bounces of its tough hide. Frustrated by the attack, she chooses to rush towards the bridge.
