Caranthir looks back over his shoulder at the portal, also unsure what to do with it.
"My only concern is that we not run out of flying magic before we finish with it," he says.
"But let us see what else this place has to offer, and perhaps we will come back."

Thistle continues to flit, unable to stay in one place for any amount of time. His chittering reverberates off of the walls, tingling his face and whiskers in ways he hadn't ever experienced before, allowing him to know where walls, obstacles, and hey...
Thistle the bat chews twice and swallows a lazy flying insect that had somehow made its way deep into the bowels of the spire. He floats over behind Bruce, expecting the transmutation magic to wear off any moment.
Not sure what to do about the portal either. Is it possible to destroy it? Otherwise it sounds like it is already blocked off, which is a good thing I think. Maybe behind this door is a way to turn it off...

Bruce moves forward to the double doors, hopping from island to island. When he gets closer, he noticed the door are clear, but he also notices a sealed off area to the side. Secret passage
Thistle feels the magical effect wearing, and manages to land in time before returning to Voltaire form.

"I suggest we try the secret door," Caranthir says. "It seems they are always kept from us for a reason."

The small alcove is shaped as if it were formed from natural stone, yet every surface appears to be formed from maroon velvet. The walls are warm to the touch and gently pulse, like a heartbeat.
All kinds of items are thrown together in heaps, or stabbed into the walls. Two prominently displayed items are a key, a 2-foot-long mass of twisted and tentacle-
like tines with a T-shaped handle, and a second key with a screaming, devilish face on the bow.

Bruce picks up the key with the devilish face, but hesitates on picking up the other one. "Anyone else want to carry that one?"

Thistle walks over, glad to have his normal limbs back. He reaches for the twisted device, picking it up by the T-shaped handle to inspect it closer. He hums a prayer of magical detection and scours his brain in an attempt to identify what it might be, or what it used to be.

The tangled key looks to a variant of the spire transport tokens the group has found earlier, while the other item looks to be a regular, be it elaborate, key.

Bruce picks up the key with the devilish face, but hesitates on picking up the other one. "Anyone else want to carry that one?"
"You have been so good at carrying the magic items, Bruce," Caranthir says. "I'm sure you should be the one to carry them."

The secret room is the one that held the keys
The next room, behind the double doors, is large and oddly shaped, with numerous alcoves and protrusions. Instead of stone, many of its walls appear to be curtains of shifting green mist that whirl and twist but always maintain a flat, vertical plane. Through the mist, another room is dimly visible.
Also in the mists are three serpent-like creatures that howl with joy upon seeing the new arrivals.

Caranthir grumbles as he opens fire, severely wounding a creature.
The chaotic creature make a cacophony of weird noise as they move through the fog, into the wall, only to appear at the opposite end of the room. One of them ends up close to Bruce, and lashes out with a tentacle, while the other creatures fill the room with fog, leaving their madness-inducing sound at the only proof of their presence.

Thistle sees the commotion in front of him, knowing that the fit is hitting the shan. He laments that he isn't on the other side yet, but remembers the latest prayer his gods have blessed him with.
Thistle whispers his prayer, and the breath from his scaled lips take shape, flowing down towards his feet. The breath coalesces into a misty fog that clings to his boots from the ankles down. Confident in his faith and blessings, Thistle steps out over the nothingness in front of him like he was walking on solid ground.
Cast air walk. Lasts 110 minutes. I've moved Thistle ahead as well on the map.

Fellgrim throws his bombs from above, while Caranthir fills the hazy are with black tentacles. Jelani moves in and deals a crushing, deadly blow to the nearest creature. Thistle walks the air.

Bruce drinks an extract to gain some protection against the creatures and instantly disappears from view. Entering the room, he hugs the wall and waits for a time to strike.

The weird serpent-like creature weave in and out of the wall, seemingly enjoying the confusion they cause by disappearing and reappearing out of nowhere. One of them focuses its attacks on Jelani, though he takes only a single bite, and the invisible Bruce seems to be detected as well.

Thistle, now with his enhanced air movement, trudges forward over the malaise below him. With each step, he climbs a little closer to the ceiling above, putting some distance between himself and the floor below as he turns the corner.
Double move into the room, air walk lets me climb up into the air as well, say 10' off the ground if the ceiling allows it.

In front of him, Jelani takes a few minor hits. Nothing that would properly faze the hulking man, though. With the chaotic beast in desperation mode, Thistle adds a prayer over his Mwangi friend to make sure his mind stays focused on where it needs to be.
Cast unbreakable heart - gives Jelani a +4 to mind affecting saving throws that rely on negative emotions or would cause him to attack an ally.

Jelani and Caranthir make short work of the last protean, returning peace to the strange room. Once the fog and tenctacles wear off, it looks like the walls function as if they are portals, each connected to the opposite side - stepping out on one side means emerging on the other.

Grinning at the possibility, and bummed he didn't realize it in the middle of the fight, Thistle checks out the capabilities of the portals, bampfing through one wall and out the other on the opposite side of the room. He catches his step, a little off balance from the uncommon travel method.
Still grinning, and shrugging his shoulders, he points towards the double doors across from where they came in.

Caranthir watches Thistle with some amusement. Retrieving his durable arrows, he places them back in his quiver.
"Perhaps we should report back to the overlords of this level and let them know we have defeated the chaotic elements here," he suggest.
"There was one last room they guarded. Perhaps we might gain entry."

Back in the entry room, the sentinels are still waiting. They look at the party curiously, but ask no questions. They don't seem to be opposed to letting the party pass through the far door.

Affirmative. Be advised, though, that the area beyond is under control, you are unlikely to find adversaries there.
The walls of the next room are covered with shelves holding a wide variety of wires, crystals, cogs, and what look like severed wings or limbs made of clockwork. Tall stacks of similar items— arranged neatly by color, size, and less obvious criteria—clutter the floor, though a clear path runs between the two doors.
Two creatures that look like mechanical eyeballs with wings and arms—live in this room, observing the party as they enter.

Caranthir casts detect magic and looks around as he tries to determine what this place is.
"It appears we are unlikely to find enemies beyond these doors," he says as he gestures to the double doors. "We should investigate, anyway."
