Leaning against a large boulder, Audyn pauses to catch his breath. "If it's all the same to everyone else, I could use a brief rest. In the meantime, would anyone more knowledgeable in such matters care to inspect these items?"

![]() |

"good Sir, that was most heroic. You have our gratitude." Luralee says to the swashbuckler.

![]() |

"That was inspiring Audyn!" Myrd says before turning to the boy "Are you ok?"
A little later he looks at the items Audyn carried down and casts a minor cantrip Detect Magic
He then looks at the others "We need to hurry if we are to catch up with the caravan! I prefer to join them, if only because there is strength in numbers"

![]() |

"I agree.", Iron Feathers chiming in. He hands Myrd a steel rod, "Use this on our nimble friend's wounds, then we should push on. Something is definitely amiss and it will only get worse the longer it takes for us to reach the caravan."

![]() |

None of the items show as magical
It is only an hour or two until the trail starts to leave the mountains and returns to the rocky desert terrain.
The smell of water in the air as you leave the mountain pass indicates that the Shat-al-Qadr River runs somewhere nearby.
You have found your heading again. As you round a final talus slope, you discover something altogether unexpected. The very caravan you have sought waits before you, the merchants and drovers kneeling with their arms bound behind their backs and the camels clustered nearby. Among these captives walk a dozen or so armed warriors wrapped in the dark robes and helms of the desert bandits you fought before. Standing with his back to you, not ten feet away, is the armored form of the Taldan knight, Gaspar du Mer. He holds his wide-bladed sword in one hand and clutches the tied arms of the caravan mistress Jamila al-Shafah with the other as he shouts orders to the brigands.
Jamila notices you, but keeps her face calm. Suddenly just a short way away, the desert sands start to swirl. A vortex forms, sucking up sand as a small whirlwind whips the air. The closest desert raider is picked up and thrown far away. Sensing a problem Gaspar takes a drink from his bottle as he views the vortex with caution. With a distraction, now is the time to act!

Hopefully there was time for Myrd to use Iron Feathers' healing wand on me before I do this! :)
Audyn stands up and, rapier in hand, puts on a dazzling display of swordsmanship. "Know that the only payment you'll receive for your misdeeds this day is a swift and violent death, brigands!"
Intimidate (Dazzling Display): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Aww yeah! Remember, Audyn has the Memorable trait!

![]() |

Parker mutters a quiet, "S%%#.", under his nose as he points a finger towards the armoured man. His eyebrows raise as Audyn shouts. Woah. Ain't pissing him off., before launching a shard of ice towards the man's back.
Attack, Touch: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 Lovely.
Damage: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 1, 3) = 10
The snowball dissipating in the scorching heat once more, he looks around nervously, shouting, "This was a warnin' shot!", almost believing himself, as he steps behind the big tengu.
One spell remains, and one in the bond.

We are really that close? Those poor fools...
Iron Feathers glares as he moves into a quick rages stepping forward and savagely mauling the bandit in front of him. "I shall rip you and your bandits apart, traitor!"

Audyn puts on an impressive display, captivating the nearby desert marauders who don't seem keen to get in close to such a fearsome warrior.
Parker fires off a warning shot, while Iron Feathers rips a hole in the middle of the line.

The raider in front of Luralee slashes at her
attack: 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 3 - 2 = 11
But the blow is easily avoided.
The next raider, given the choice of facing the fearsom Audyn or the deadly Iron Feathers chooses the dazling swordsman.
attack: 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 3 - 2 = 6
His blow is no better that the first.
Gaspar, disgusted at dropping the sword, leans down to pick up the weapon of one of the fallen raiders. Then he fearlessly steps forward to engage Iron Feathers.
attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25

@Iron Were you including +4 for prone?
Audyn tries to attack a desert raider, but his wily opponent manages to deflect the blow. Definitely he made the right choice not to be near the feathered terror that lays into Gaspar on the ground.

No, since technically that's a penalty to their AC and not a bonus for my hit (even though it calculates the same, just how I typically do things). If you'd prefer I add it on my own, I'll do so in the future :)

So long as its clear whether you are including it, I'm easy either way.

Rapier attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Rapier damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

"'Bout godsdamned time!", shouts Parker as the Goblin bites the ice. Parker draws a flask from his hip and uncorks it, the toxic fumes coalescing around his fingers as he launches an orb of acid at the goblin in front of Luralee.
Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Damage: 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

The acid sizzles in, but this is no weakling desert raider. In spire of both the spear thrust and acid ball to his face, he keeps on with his spear, determined to make these people pay.
Meanwhile in the background, more raiders go flying through the air as the vortex grows in force and flying sand buffets the area.

With a focus on not outfight killing Gaspar, only a single blow lands on the knight from the formidable Iron Feathers.

Worried now, Gaspar tries to cut the Tengu with the unfamiliar scimitar.

Gaspar is not actually on the ground any more, so there is no extra +4 from being prone.
That said.. Iron Feathers unleashes The Inner Bird of Fury on the poor knight. He collapses to the ground, beaten senseless by the Tengu's assault.
Behind him the last of the raiders who have not been thrown through the air by the vortex, note the demise of Gaspar and turn to flee.
Jamila emerges from the rocks and approaches the pathfinder team. The whirling dervish of sand slows down, assuming the form of some type of elemental. It bows deeply to Jamilia who thanks it for its assistance. It then..vanishes.
"My thanks for your timely help." she says.
"There is more than meets the eye here. Gaspar is no opportunist - he has been raiding caravans for years, trying to disrupt trade. Only we were not sure it was him.." her eyes swing to the body of Targos.
"We knew as he became frail, the attacks would increase, and put a lot of effort into identifying who was behind it. It turned out to be one of three. The merchants you met and travelled with."
A tear springs to her eye
"Targos and I hatched a plan. With his strength fading, I agreed to feed him some venom to speed his passage into the outer realms, expecting the adversary to tip his hand with the Protector gone."
Scowling at Gaspar she adds "And he did. My thanks for helping in apprehending him. He will be taken to pay for his crimes, and the Silken Road - and people of Katheer will see justice done and Targos remembered for his final great sacrifice as well as his life of service."

![]() |

Iron Feathers slumps down, tired from exerting his avian muscles to their limits.
"I do not like that we were kept out of the loop, but I can assume you did not want Gaspar's contacts to catch wind of the plot."

![]() |

She nods.
"Yes, we needed to keep everyone in the dark. And yes, you are right, at his own request I poisoned him. It was the hardest thing I have ever done. But I couldn't deny him the request, and to see the man I loved for years fade in front of me..."
She shakes her head, a tear running down her cheek.

![]() |

"Glad we could assist, not sure if him giving his life as such, while a noble effort indeed, was needed for this ruse to work. All in all it worked out int he end so I suppose his soul is happy in the afterlife as he gazes down from above." Luralee says as she cleans her spear.

![]() |

"His life was all but over anyway. His heart pained him more and more. His end was without suffering and with nobility and meaning. Lingering in this world would have caused him more than just physical pain." says the caravan mistress.

![]() |

"Understandable. The worst death for a warrior is disease and old age."
